studying abroad is way easier. in nigeria you basically have to regurgitate exactly what the prof gave to you. this is not an easy feat. not everyone is adept at cramming. abroad its all about your critical thinking skills. if your critical thinking faculty is up to par, you will find out that most of the time you dont even have to read before you go to an exam (abroad) |

nethacker:bruv i guess everyone is different. when i was in nigeria, it was all about cramming and regurgitation. this is not my forte. i like to be able to grasp the basic concept behind every topic so that basically simplifies your life. the difference between cramming down a 200 page textbook and skirting casually through a 200 page textbook is understanding the concept of that textbook. this is what makes education easier abroad. no one expects you to quote them verbatim before you get an A |

Graduated from a business school in U.K 2008 and trust me it was not an easy feat compared to my 9j education. PHCN or cultism or what have you is all part of th Ngerian society so i don't think that should b a factor in saying it makes studying in 9ja difficult. The beauty of the foreign system is that you feel really accomplished and knowledgeable about your field can't realy say that about the 9ja sysem. A word of advise to everyone out there if you think your way to the top is through education and you really want to know pls if you have the resources don't even think about the 9ja system not for you or your children! |

nethacker:tis funny you say that because my living conditions while studying in nigeria was wayyyyyyy better than my living conditions while studying in america. see in nigeria i didnt have to worry about rent, bills, working on the side etc etc. and despite all that i still fared better academically abroad. so lets cut out the living condition is better abroad stuff. for me it wasnt. i was staying with a bunch of 419 dudes and we got kicked out twice out of the apt. this was in the middle of the season. twas rough. but i still was the best student in my class. the teachers pet my point being, it had nothing to do with living conditions. i think the concept of education being easier abroad is valid the concept of life being easier abroad ? thats extremely invalid. life is definitely easier in nigeria. ask this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONS8yDx4C3I |

ENZO SCIFO:stop disseminating your myopic and dangerous piece of information online. this is highly irresponsible on your part. what percentage of people can actually afford to study abroad ? are you saying that 40 million nigerians should jump ship and go study abroad ? what society will absorb 40 million nigerians ? why are you creating an inferiority complex int hose who choose to study in nigeria ? this is an abhorrent post. |

Studying overseas definitely is not as easy as a lot of people would have thought. At the end of the day you are faced with many issues that, if you're not strong willed (thank God that we all came from Nigeria), it is enough to want to make you quit. You deal with issues of racism on one hand, understanding the alien system, trying to deal with working part time (and for some of us full time) and combining that with your studies, trying to take care of the people back home (not all of us were born with silver spoon). You are a student and at the same time your families and students are looking up to you to take care of them, the amount of responsibility can be overwhelming. Amidst all of these, you also have to deal with incliment weather (I'm sure those who have experienced winter can attest to this), one that you never experienced before. Now, having said that, the joy of studying overseas can be numerous. You have all the best resources for your success, books are readily available (you don't have to worry about buying prof's notes). Laboratories are well equipped and up to standard, access to up-to-date technological tools that will aid your studies are also readily available. Moreover, you cannot even put a value on the exposure to other cultures, people and ideas. Also, noteworthy is that fact that you never have to worry about NEPA. The environment is created to bring out the best in you academically. You also have professors that are easily approachable and if you're a woman, you don't have to worry about constant harrasment by lecturers (not that any society is completely immune to that). The other thing is that if you deserve an A, an you work hard for an A, the profs are excited to give you your mark. There is no such thing as it being a taboo to graduate with first class standing. I mean graduating Summa Cum Laude or Magna Cum Laude is not a rarity as it is the case in Nigeria where people often bost that "he's the only one to have graduate 1st class in the history of the department". You get what you right worked for at the end of the day, and I believe that is very rewarding. In terms of the volume of work, while it can be overwhelming if you're studying overseas, it is not, within the context of the academic standard an anomaly. In fact, anything less will be an indication of a substandard education. The reality is that, Nigeria can do the same if only we can get our acts together. We need to create the culture where students will see that there every action from day one will ultimately affect their overall performance - attendance in classes, papers and other continuous assessments tools count not just the almighty final examination - which results in cramming and regurgitation. Studying in Nigeria is not easy because you have to deal with everything that goes contrary to a normal society where the goal of the school is to graduate top notch students. Studying overseas is challenging as you have to deal with adapting to a new environment, deal with pressure from within and without and ultimately having it at the back of your mind that you're here to succeed and failure is not an option. Believe, me, this is coming from someone that studied a year at UI, and have gone through complete undergraduate and graduate studies in North America. 1 Like |

It depends on the way you look at it. In most departments Naija there's what is call settling. If you can settle well, you don't need to over stress yourself with book. But abroad where everything is based on merit, you gat to sweat it out. However, they've got the right facilities to compensate for that plus the rewards are high. 1 Like |

As somebody who studied in both. Using my own time of studying in Nigeria as a guide, abroad one is easier(if one faces book only!). I have seen many average students getting 2:1 easily in UK |
Re: Why Do Pple Think That Studying Abroad Is Easier by 2good(m): 6:28pm On Mar 11, 2011 |
Nigerians tends to do well abroad because they put in more effort than they would when studying in Nigeria cos of factors like very expensive tuition and failure is not an option, as a black man you want to prove that your reasoning is not as low as most white guys think, if you resign from work you know you have no option but to get that degree. If I put in dsame effort I put in here in Nigeria, I would have made a super GPA. I spent 6yrs in Unilag and I can say this place is more stressful. |

2good: Very very valid point. Studying in the UK (dont know of US) is hell on earth when compared to what i experienced in Nigeria. I dont know much of undergrads but as a postgraduate student, i didnt bargain for what i am goin through now. Some people say they have better lecturers abroad who actually teach but that's a big fat lie; over 80% of what i learn daily is 'self study'. Only difference is that when the lecturers ask u to 'read up', the books or materials are readily available. What I have to read in one semester of my Msc is way more than what i read in 3 full sessions in Nigeria. The only reason why people pass better here is because, when one thinks of the millions spent to come here, he/she has no other option than to |
