Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by henry101(m): 1:26am On Mar 15, 2011
BY SIMON EBEGBULEM
IRKED by the assault meted out on his son, Prince Ekpen Erediauwa, by the Chairman of the Edo State Task Force Committee on the Vandalization of Pipeline and also the youth leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Edo State, Mr Osakpanwa Eriyo, the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, yesterday, placed a curse on the alleged culprit after describing the action as a taboo in Benin Kingdom.

PROTEST: Chiefs and elders of Benin placing curses on the Chairman of the Taskforce Committee on the Vandalisation of Pipelines, over his alleged assault on the Oba of Benin's son, at the Oba's Palace, in Benin City, yesterday. Photo by Barnabas Uzosike.
This came as thousands of youths, dressed in red attire, market women and royal family members, protested round Benin City, yesterday, demanding for the banishment of Eriyo from the kingdom, explaining that assaulting a Prince of the kingdom was sacrilegious, and capital punishment should be meted on him.
Meanwhile, the Edo State government, in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Peter Okhiria, yesterday, announced the suspension of Mr Eriyo as Chairman of the Anti-Pipeline Vandalization Committee, adding “all contracts in respect of revenue collection in Oredo Local Government Area are also hereby suspended.”

It will be recalled that Eriyo, who also doubles as the Chairman Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Edo State chapter, had weekend, assaulted the Transition Committee Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area of the state, Prince Erediauwa during a meeting of the leadership of the ACN in Oredo council. But Osakpanwa had denied that he assaulted the Prince in a statement.
Reacting swiftly, the Oba’s chiefs, led by the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe; the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri; Obasogie of Benin Kingdom, Chief Eduwor Ekhator and the entire palace chiefs, went round the city, with pots of charms and placed curse on Osakpanwa after he was declared an enemy of the Oba.
In a statement by the Chairman, Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Oba’s Palace, Chief Eduwor Ekhator, it said “no one can demystify the monarchical value of the Benin Royal Palace of the Oba. Attempt by any person or persons to destroy the long existing peace and unity of the Benin will be checked with rebuked condemnation.
“The attempt on the Benin Prince was a demonstration of recklessness and lack of respect for a constituted authority. It is highly provocative, sacrilegious and unacceptable and thereby deserves total condemnation by every Edo son and daughter both at home and in the Diaspora. However, the palace of the Oba advises all sympathizers to obey the rule of law,” it added.

I feel sorry for the task force Chief. Stone age or Millennium age, culture is culture and the Benin culture is a very strong one. You guys need to respect that.
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by eros(m): 1:37pm On Mar 15, 2011
@Paul_Udo:… you apparently do not quite figure the seriousness of this matter. A revered institution was brought to disrepute. Let's think the unthinkable that someone on the payroll of British government turned around and beat up any member of the Britain’s royal family, That beating would trigger 2 forces. 1. The law of the land would punish the person for assault and battery. 2. The person would also face various offences for endangering the life of a member of the royal family and public mischief for bringing disrepute to a revered British institution. The massive outrage that would follow will dominate the news for days.

In this matter Agbero Eriyo stuck his finger in asp net and so [he] should be prepared for what is coming his way. After all it is said those who live by the sword [shall] die by the sword. Eriyo did not respect the laws of the land and did not respect a revered institution and in so doing opened up himself to forces that are beyond his agbero powers. As for those of us Christians who would preach that the curse is wrong because Christ told his followers to forgive and to not curse… well remember Christ also taught that people should give to Caesar what belonged to Caesar and to God what belonged to God. If Eriyo knows his onions then he should begin immediate act of contrition and beg for forgiveness. Otherwise the devil just got a new job.

No call for lynching, we are making progress. Benin belongs to the Oba, only a goat want to be an enemy of the oba in Benin. lipsrsealed

How can you assault a royal member of the Great benin kingdom. You must be dumb. The oba is more powerful than the governor!, and it's been so for centuries, and the people of benin have always acknowledged this.

I smell three-dimensional doom for the idiotic task force fellow: spiritual, physical, and political doom. Some people act first and think later. . .to their own peril.
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by v3: 2:33pm On Mar 15, 2011
Wow, some people still live in the past. sad

Say, if after cursing Mr. Eriyo and for some reason he doesn't drop dead instantly and things just keep getting better for him. . Would the oba resort to sending assassins to kill him? undecided

Is the oba God?

Probably this stone age justice system is what nigeria needs with the present stone age precedences in the country.

How else can one make an average nigerian to be rational than stirring up the fear and wraths of african gods?

man curses god blesses
sure! plus these curses are harmless. It only makes the chiefs feel usefull. Having said that, it's very wrong to disrespect the Oba's son, (Prince Ekpen Erediauwa). angry

What the curse does is make the victim or rather assailant restless, since all eyes and hands are against him,in that state,he bound to break down mentally and psycholigically which leads to fatal mistakes and errors that may lead to the persons death or total mental breakdown.

It is a way of ostracizing miscreats in the society and making them pay for their evil deeds. That should be recommeded for obasanjo to be carried out by the people of ogun state.
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by vanesa(m): 3:00pm On Mar 15, 2011
Nonsense ,If the sons of the obas or the obas themselves don't want to be assaulted then tell them to leave politics for those thatare ready to be brutalized, assaulted, beaten etc!!
Where was the oba when lucky igbinedion stole billions? what happened to the kidnappers cursed by the same oba??
Comparing England to Benin or Nigeria is like comparing tuketuke with Bugatti!
Its high time we see that those that call themselves obas are just there to fend for their pockets
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by v3: 3:03pm On Mar 15, 2011
Only a raging bull would charge at you with no reason. Me thinks the prince must've said/done something that warranted the beating.

But seriously, in this day and age. . when countries are busy growing themselves in all areas, some people resort to carrying charms around&cursing people? Naija we hail thee! cheesy

And that comparison between Naija and Britain, let it end. . there's a gulf of class(culture-wise) between both nations

If you act like an Oba's son, no one will disrespect you. The Oba has no right to go wild if the son was not acting in a reasonable manner. Also, the Oba if reasonable should not be seen in public acting so outlandishly and almost childish. He is a ruler over his subjects and decorum is required, him an his family are also accountable to the Benin people and are required to act in a manner that even a foreigner would be afraid to disrespect the institution. All these curses sef are becoming too rampant, soon everyone will start to hiss at the talk of curse.

I laugh in bini language. Most of u guys think freedom of speech in nairaland means freedom to talk anyhow. If u want to know the magnitude of the implication of the Oba laying a curse on anyone leaving in Benin soil, just go and ask a typical Bini man. Abi una think say Oba of benin be like some of those yoruba Oba wey dey fight for street? Infact I dey cry for Eriho right now cry cry cry

Nothing will happen. It is fear and belief in this crap that can cause mass hysteria and symptoms to jaz. It is all in the mind. Why juju no dey kill white man? Abeg this Oba's son needs to start giving himself respect so that other's will respect him. Besides the privilege of the throne is decided by the subjects. Any Oba can be deposed if his family bring problems for the people.
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by HighChief4(m): 3:45pm On Mar 15, 2011
The task force guy Eriyo Osakpanwa is a tout and has a very bad record of intimidating people. He forcefully dated a gal that i know and intimidated her family. Now he has crossed his boundaries
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by samtoye(m): 3:46pm On Mar 15, 2011
Same Oba of Benin Kingdom that Chief Igbinedion resisted for years and no curse affected him, abi the Esama isn't same flesh and blood as other humans? when are we gonna wake up from our slumber? when would we emancipate ourselves from the bondage of our forefather's mumbo jumbo!!!!! I thought education should make a big difference. Nobody should be above the law; oba or prince. Also do not tribal-ize- the issue, Oba anywhere either yoruba, hausa or ibo should respect their office and keep their royal family under control. I wonder what would have happen if man was GOD !!!!
Re: Assault: Benin Monarch Curses Task Force Chief! by vanesa(m): 3:48pm On Mar 15, 2011

Guy bone that level. The same ancient culture that have refused to let your ancient city to develop;maybe you guys should give thanks to comrade who's turning things around.
what did oba do all these years to pdp governors that ruled over the state without doing anything. There is nothing special about anybody's son.If these were to be jonathan's or a minister's son, people like you will be the first to start running your mouth.
A case of assault can easily be addressed suing the tout to court instead of all these yeye juju and banishment talk. oba of benin may a remain semi-god for all you care but the constitution of Nigeria remain the supreme law of Nigeria or Is benin a vatican state in Nigeria ?
