James Buchanan(1791--1868) was the 15th president of the United States from 1857--1861..he was preceded by Franklin Pierce and succeeded by Abraham Lincoln..most historians consider him one of the worst U.S presidents ever as he did virtually nothing noteworthy to stop the nation from drifting into a very bloody civil war that began once he left office in 1861...
But the most interesting fact about Buchanan is that he is the only U.S president that never married all his life... speculations about his sexuality and rumors that he was gay became so rife in the U.S at that time as he was known to be in a very intense relationship with a man named Williams Rufus king..the former vice president under his predecessor Franklin Pierce..they were so close that they lived together for many years in the capital untill king's death from tuberculosis in 1853 and attended public events together prompting even a former U.S president still alive at that time Andrew Jackson to often refer to King as "miss Nancy" and another prominent Democrat then Aaron v. Brown always called King, Buchanan's "better half".."wife"..and "Aunty fancy"... Though the exact nature of the relationship between Buchanan and King still remains a mystery to this day..most prominent writers like James w. loewan, Robert p. Watson and Shelley Ross all surmised that they were both involved in a very intense homosexual relationship and that all the correspondence(letters) between the two were destroyed by their relatives upon their deaths in order to conceal from the public the very romantic tone of the letters and hence the romantic nature of their relationship...
