I would have taken ASUU serious if they had joined endsars protests. Most university dons are sars themselves.

ASS-UU should be grateful that they are even given the choice to negotiate. Back when Buhari was a vibrant military man all these lazy I too know professors would be whipped back to work. angry

He is really being too kind and loving in this democratic setting. After increasing your salaries you are still striking, is that not wickedness? undecided

If the Nigerian government did what it was supposed to do before now, there would be no need for this your "higi haha" rantings up there.

Blame the right person

As much as I want to resume, FG should do the right thing. When the #ENDSARS protest was heating up, they were ready to comply but after they silenced the youths by other means their tune changed. That tells much of the insincere buffoons we have in government. They clearly need iron fist.

In my opinion the Federal Government should quit subsidizing tertiary institution and let these universities generate funds itself and manage it's administration.
Just like many Private universities out there students should pay for quality education and not to worry about strike

Abeg change the channel make we change the topic jare.
ASUU wey don dey go on long strikes before millennium and their Demands have never been met before.
Simply because after each of those long strikes, Federal government fraudster ministers will bribe some of their leaders then cause divisions among the same fraudsters that called themselves ASUU and then resume for two or three years before starting another strike.
Eyes don open wide, tell them we are the youth, the pillars of the nation

Sounds like you'd act worse than Buhari if you had the chance to be Nigeria's number one citizen! And I am almost certain you were one of those people dancing on highways during the #ENDSARS protest!

This is an outrage, a government sponsored propaganda machine and brash blackmail, but no matter. So ASUU is now the villain for fighting for proper and dignified educational environment don't forget ASUU is asking for 110billion naira for revitalization of the universities, this money is not for ASUU members, it's still this FG that will issue contracts to build proper infrastructure in the public universities or are we comfortable seeing pictures and videos of students sitting on the floor in over crowded lecture rooms? Don't get me started on the lack of basic laboratory equipment and reagents for the students to instruct students with. Nigerian lecturers are among the lowest paid in Africa, so to be paid what is at par with there colleagues in other places in Africa is now a crime? Look, I won't speak on this again on this platform, but if the Nigerian citizenry don't stand behind ASUU to win this battle, then our public education in Nigeria is totally finished. The present academics won't loose out, considering that Nigerian academics are highly sort after outside the shores of this country(what with the introduction of professional visa by the UAE). At the end of the day, the children of the poor will suffer it.
And what's very amazing is the speed at which this article will spread all over the country today, because it's government sponsored. Our nairaland Mods, I greet o!!!

FG should have a second tier of University lecturers outsourced to an agency on contract basis to work side by side present ASUU, that way anytime ASUU go on their stupid strike, those contract lecturers can continue and ensure that academic calendar is never disrupted.
Nonsense.

Number of months in a year: 12 months
Number of months ASUU goes on strike: 10 months
Number of months paid salary: 12 months (without working)
Number of years students get to spend in school: 4 years + x, where x is unknown.

Students loss over number of extra unsolicited years spent in school, FG loses money paid to lazy lecturers who receive salaries without working only ASUU gains because they get to receive their salary whether or non they go on strike throughout their career.

Only if government do the right thing rather than paying urchins like you to spew nonsense online...then the strike will come to an end.

The truth is that ASUU just don't want for themselves only, of course their interest is paramount, they still want the government to invest more in tertiary education. It's not easy dealing with the federal government, how many times have we seen these politicians sleeping during house meetings and they get enormous pays while professors work their butt off for a small amount. Government owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria are also an eyesore, they are a mess, the hostels are not fit to live in, the classrooms are not accommodating the number that are being admitted, the laboratories and libraries are not well equipped and so on.

A developed country is made from 3 important sector.
-Education
-Health
-Power.

Once those 3 can be gotten in place the country will pick up faster than bolt.

Many of us are just caught up between their endless disagreement. I believe if the government understand another route, ASUU may not have to always resort to strike, we have intelligent lecturers in many tertiary institution, I'm sure they would have worked something out.

The sad part is, the government won't do it, they'll keep meeting with ASUU every year till the next administration takes over and hand over the debt to them and the cycle may keep going.

This country is a sham.
Re: Hurray, ASUU Wants Prompt Pay For Endless Strikes! by Nobody: 8:08am On Nov 17, 2020
The elephant in the room is university funding.

Both ASUU and thw government know that the universities need more funds. Both of them also know that the funds cannot come out of the education budget which is less than a trillion naira annually

Plus, if we were to follow the terms of the 2009 ASUU-fg agreement, universities would need at least 1.5 trillion naira to function effectively annually

That's 1.5 trillion for universities alone. Primary and secondary schools may need more than that, which means for a sustainable education budget, we need sometiong like 5 trillion naira annually

Which means two things; fees and taxes go up.

Problem is, such an idea is not politically popular. So ASUU continues the charade of an annual strike and government keeps on paying them off simply because both sides dont want students to pay fees of 600000 per annum and taxes at the rate of 20% per gdp.

Actually ASUU does want better schools.

You should google for the 2009 ASUU fg agreement . It goes way beyond salaries. There were provisions for spending on facilities and equipment too.

But the problem is, all these mean annual costs in the trillions of naira. And since both sides dont want to face thw reality of increasing fees..

The immediate past vice-chancellor of abu zaria in a speech he gave in 2018 commented that his overhead costs alone were 600 million naira annually, and he gets 120million from the government to pay these costs. He also stated that if Nigeria really wanted Cambridge level degrees, Nigeria needed to pay Cambridge level fees.

The sad truth! Why can't ASUU look for an alternative way of making demands undecided the striking strategy is stale and obsolete as it has not done much good to the students who are always at the receiving ends.

You sound kind of ignorant. Do you have evidence that they did not seek other means of mediating with the FG? From medical doctors to PENGASSAN to NLC, has govt ever listened to any reason until strike actions were initiated?

No matter what, you don't have the right to abscond from your work for 9 months in the name of strike and still expect to get fully paid for those 9 months before going back to work.
But what would have happened if government took actions well before ASUU called on the strike?

Would they still have gone on strike?
