ikakahu: people should stop telling lies in order to get customers/clients.I totally agree with kunle A.It was all about about this 48 hrs(2 days) period of car delivery that made me venture into such a deal. After 1 wk and 2 days,I ve not yet got my delivery although the biz was not done with the poster but with another dealer who also promised that I will get the car under 48 hrs.My anger here is even if its going to take a month, tell your customer the truth. The most annoying part is that all the gist the guy told me about buying a car in cotonou were all false ranging from prizes to duration of delivery. When you get there,it ll be another story again. From stories to stories. You may even find out that you ve spent more what you would have bought the car in lagos although my main concern was to choose from varieties and not cost cos of my high taste(not by my making) BUT I MUST SAY THE TRUTH THAT I EVEN BOUGHT THE CAR MORE EXPENSIVE THAN I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT IN LAGOS.I ve vowed never to venture into such a deal again as next time I ve it in my to get another car,I will simply walk into car shop here in naija .Its only good for those that want to smuggle their cars to nigeria but if you want to pay full duty,my brother,my sister, buy it here in naija or even look for a reliable friend or relation that will buy it for you in U.S.
lest I forget,They told me that cotonou people don t work their cars, that they sell it as it comes but that's a clear lie which I confirmed by my self. They have workshops where they work accident cars and some of these workshops are even within the auto sales yard.I tell you,it was a bitter experience and a case of misinformation and I believe that most people must have experienced this as well.Even when I told two of my friends about this, they equally told me that they had such an ugly experience too, that if i had told them that I was going to cotonou to buy the car, that they would have discouraged me.I don t have time because of my busy schedule but I promised my self that I am going to put a write up as regards this.PLS IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAD A DECENT DEAL IN COTONOU,COME AND SHARE IT HERE BUT IF YOU THAT YOU HAD AN UGLY ONE,ALSO EDUCATE OTHERS SO THAT THEY DON T MAKE MISTAKES.

One more important advice, never change a huge sum of amount when going. You can change like 20K so that when you ve have seen by yourself and confirmed that all they told you were lies, you can kindly come back to naija and chang your money to naira and you won t loose so much money.I was cajoled into changing over a million naira and when I saw the truth,I notice that changing the money back would result to more losses and what if being robbed on the way?So that was a serious challenge to me too as I had no option than to buy there.

I am not here to ridicule any body's bussiness but just the sincere truth and experience is what am sharing with you because if you are not well informed, you will be deformed and you know what that means.ALWAYS BE TRUTHFUL!!!
It is very pathetic that none of the regular nairaland cotonou agents responded to this guy and other negative experiences about getting cars from cotonou thru agents, except saintjoel. I must commend you saintjoel for being transparent and open in your dealings here.

Thank you sir for the compliment,it's what I do for a living and if I'm dishonest with it,I'll definitely starve.
If at anytime you wish to buy a car from cotonou, just take along your transort fare and between twenty-fifty thousand for deposit, also make sure you're satisfied with the car before making payments.
Also always make sure all your duty papers are ccomplete before leaving the border, even if you're buying low end cars, pay your custom duty.Don't let fraudulent agents scam you into smuggling cheap cars intto Nigeria.

Sir,with your permission I'll like to clear some issues.
1.Under no circumstances should you allow your car leave the border without the following papers,(a duty certificate or to whom it may cconcern letter),a vehicle assessment form and bank pay slip indicating payment into customs acccount.
2.On the issue of workshops in cotonou, what your agent failed to tell you is that not all cars in cotonou are accidented, the same ways you'll see guys changing seats or repaint cars in first gate agindingbi or in surulere are the same way they operate in cotonou. If you don't have an experienced mechanic with you, there are thousands of accidented cars in lagos and also in cotonou,if you don't notice, they'll scam you.
Also we've had issues with people intentionally coming into cotonou to buy accidented cars because they're cheap but when any problem arises, they fail to tell people that they made the choice and it wasn't the agents fault.
3.The issue of 48hrs has seriously become an arguement between agents and prospecctive customers,it's always better for an agent to let his customers know there may be some constraints.
If you go into cotonou anytime after 10am,by the time you pay it'll not be possible for your car to come out from the parks that day unless you pay for express, cos they also need to pay into banks and process the car's papers before it's placed under escort. Also it's possible you get to the Nigerian border and the officers in charge of vehicle assessment may have closed or banks may not have internet services and there's no way they'll print a payslip without authorization from custom H/Q in abuja. This and many more makes may turn the 48hrs to 3days,cos if you maake the mistake of moving your car without proper verification from customs, they'll seize it aand you'll loose your money.
4.On the issue of car prices, whenever you're buying a car from cotonou, try as much as possible to know the lagos price before going to cotonou and be sincere with it.We've had issues of people telling us they've seen golf3 for 500K in lagos and I'll always tell them to buy instead of coming into cotonou. There are some special exceptions where buying a car in lagos will be better than coming to cotonou, what cotonou offers in that case is that you've like 10-20 cars to choose from.
5.Never go to cotonou with huge sums of money, just your transport money aand like 100K for deposit but if youre satisfied don't pay the deposit, you still have the opportunity of going back to your base and reflect on what you saw at the parks before coming back to pay for the car.
With all these,I hope I've been able to clear some issues about your experience in cotonou.

Attention, to buy a car in semeborder can be a FRAUD. I have found a Toyota Rav4 on internet on the site www.kobocars.com. The name of the custom officier is WALE 0703875252. I have paid 400K on the account of Mr.AKHATOR LAZARUS GIMON for clearing the car. Mr Wale told me to deliver the car with a driver in the same day in Abuja. The name of the driver is Shegu 08065862352. I have also paid 11K on the driver account for the fuel. In the evening they called me that the car was stopped in Lokoja for a federal police problem because the car was without plate. Now the driver has come back to Lagos and the car and my money disappear. I have only received a message that if I would have my car I had to travel to semeborder. So I have contacted the police anti fraud department.
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS MAN. HE HAS ALSO POSTED A FAKE CUSTOM OFFICIER PICTURE ON FACEBOOK. HE IS A CHEATER

The love for free or next to free things by Nigerians will always have them entrapped.

I'm an agent at seme border and all what agents are liscenced to di bring in your vehicles into Nigeria through seme/idiroko border.

No agent is given the power to sell or auction cars by the Nigerian Customs service. If at anytime you want to make inquiries about auctions,go to the HQ in Abuja.

I wonder what goes through peoples' mind when they see expensive cars been advertised with cheap prices e:g 2007 Rav4 for 750,000 naira.
All these are just scams and they'll always find gullible Nigerians who will fall.

babiifaace: HI all,i have been observing this trend for a long time and couldn't say anything becos i didn't know about the subject matter. Both i just came back from cotonou on friday. I went there bought a car and paid all custom duties and everything took 5days plus the public holiday on Tuesday.I must tell u, if u want a good car that u are sure of and ur budget is small, go to cotonou urself. The car i bought, these People called agents or dealers in NairaLand will tell u 1.3mill to get it to Lagos and so on,but i bought, paid all custom duties, hotel, feeding and transport for far less than 1million.So i final conclusion is cotonou cars are cheaper and better,i drove down to Abuja without even adding water to the car,no problem what so every.
But i must say something i observed, our Nigerian guys,go there to buy accidented cars, damaged cars and repair them in cotonou before bring them to Nigeria without paying the required Nigerian custom duty. They buy cars that there speedometer has gone over 200,000 km and reduce them. So i suggest u go urself, pay, clear and followup.

Ok let us dissect your claims one by one, you are coming up as if you are not an gent right? and you are here to enlighten others right? OK begin by telling us what make and model of cr you bought more so what year and for how much, we know the cost of most cars in the Us and the Eu countries and also the logistics to bring them to west Africa which is constant for all cars.

Then ask him about the modernization project and point of entries.
give me 3 reason why I should buy a 2001 Camry from Cotonou instead of Lagos cleared??,Defend your livelihood here Im waiting for your rresponce

ofcourse even if your car came in through tincan; you hav a specific form, cant remember what its called. At the border Points its easier you make your declearation, depending on how busy the post is u drive your car out in one or two days.
i beg to differ with saintjoel slightly that no nigerian has car in cotonou yes maybe nigerians dont own parks but in my location a lot of people bring in cars through cotonou instead of lagos cos clearing at land borders is cheaper nd if they decide to "fly", they do a "clean fly".
i've said it before on this thread that in my location getting a car from cotonou is as easy as goin to your local market save for the stress of the journey. All the stories i hear here is quite strange.

Seriously,I always love it when people like you pick issues with me,you're just helping me with unpaid adverts.

Now let me put you straight,I don't buy cars to resell in Lagos.I'm a customs lisenced agent who helps people clear their vehicles through customs at seme border, also I help clear goods(containers),make sure they're scanned before entry into Nigeria etc.

If any of my customers decide to resell these vehicles after importation into Nigeria,I'm not privy to that information. My job stops at the border immediately I've handed over your duty papers and you as the customer has verified that they're original.

erico2k2:

Do you want me to give you ten.
1.Buying from Cotonou gives you the opportunity of inspecting the car in it's natural state.Unlike bringing in a car from abroad, you've first hand knowledge of the car even if it has issues and can modify them before they get to Nigeria, you can't know if you're importing an accident car until it gets to Nigeria.

2.Mileage-unlike Lagos where you get 1999 cars with 80K mileage, cars in Cotonou have their mileages clearly indicated,if you buy a car from Cotonou and it's mileage has been rolled back,it was done by a Nigerian who went to the parks to buy and rolled back the mileage.

3.Bargaining-Aftre inspection, you've the luxury of choosing from thousands of cars and car dealers.Imagine you're in a park which covers 60 hectares and you still have like 6 parks to choose cars from,Cotonou is every bargain hunters dream come true.

4.Installmental payments-Yes,you can actually pay deposits and come back for your vehicles.Deposit agreements can last for 24hrs or 2 months,it all depends on the agreement.

5.Custom duty papers-You've the opportunity of verifying your duty papers even before your car leaves the border unlike Lagos ports cleared cars where you can hardly know if you've been handed fake papers printed for just 30,000 naira.

6.Port clearance-Cotonou port is every investors dream come true especially if you're importing expensive cars, the duty you pay on 2013 cars is the same you pay for a 1999 vehicle unlike Nigeria where you have to pay according to year or engine capacity and have I told you that demurage is 6months?.

7.Pimping of cars-Have I told you that Cotonou and border areas in Nigeria have the best workmen when it comes to pimping your car, when you buy that 2012 car and you want some special effects, there are so many french guys who will do it.

8.Since you've thousands of cars to choose from, even for a 2001 camry, you've so many options to choose from, you may even get to the parks and see so many cars, you may even decide to buy a car better than camry 01.

9.Security-if any item has been stolen from your vehicle,it was either stolen by your clearing agent or from the country it was brought from.In Cotonou, your cars are safe.

10. Time-Shipping a car in from america actually takes time, buying your dream car from Cotonou actually saves time. While you're withdrawing cash for purchase, you can declare your car in absentia to Nigerian customs, unless there's public holiday or escorts are on strike, your car gets to the border the next evening and you can move immediately your agent handsover the papers.

Sir,unlike the raggedy BMW which sells for like 300-350K in Cotonou which you tried to sell for 500K on Nairaland, you can get cars manufactured in 2012-13 in cotonou,it's just a case of cutting your coat according to your pocket, your money has to define your taste.
