salbis:Living below $1.90 cannot be used as a standard because that's relative to where you reside. For someone who lives in the village, and is a farmers, he may not be seeing those cash on daily basis but net worth is more than that by the time he harvests and does the tabulation. And he doesn't starve. A large portion of Nigerians are farmers. So, that $1.90 can only be used to judge those who live in the town. As for me that spends most of my time in my village, how often do I need to buy anything? Is it not when I need something and I cannot afford it, that I say I am poor? |

pfadom: Stop being intentionally myopic. Comparatively, the rate of poverty in Nigeria is way higher than what it is in India. India has an estimated population of 1.3 billion people with just less than 10% (100 million plus) living below the poverty line while Nigeria with a population of 200 million has over 40% (above 90 million) living on extreme poverty. Do the maths yourself and stop sounding stupid for sentimental or partisan reasons. Nigeria is on a very steep precipice and with people like yourself who will rather play the Ostrich than call out failure for what it is, it only a matter of time before the country is consumed by its failures. Cheers! 3 Likes 1 Share |

Keep deceiving yourself. Have you been to India or have interaction with Indians? I have first hand information on poverty in India. Many school leavers are jobless and Indians are leaving for greener pastures in millions. I am apolitical. You are entitled to your myopic opinion. Good luck. Bamibor: 1 Like |

Your comment is full of confusions. The figure you quoted about India is quite unfortunate. India is over 1bn in population. Nigeria is officially 200m in population. Poverty percentage in the 2 countries are 10% in India and almost 50% in Nigeria, given the declared population of each country. 3 Likes |

chumada:Yea, South west is truly worse than the north on poverty, south south and south east. I can see how people are picking food from dustbin and lots of south west doing maiguard and gatemen in the north and other parts of the country. People aren't coming to south west, including lagos for greener pasture because there are no industries or opportunities there at all. The movie industry is also located in maiduguri. Most of tech firms and young entrepreneurs in Nigeria are located in Asaba and Nnewi . See your mouth. 1 Like |

potbelly: You are very right. Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world. Whoever wrote that piece is despicably stupid. Because, the population of India is over 900million people, so if 100million of them live below the poverty line, it is just a tiny percentage of the country that experiences poverty. About 1/10 or 1/9. Again, the Corona Virus pandemic exacerbated poverty in India in 2020 after the lockdowns. India's poverty population was about 57million people before the lockdowns. In the case of Nigeria where the population is estimated at 200m people and about 100m are living below poverty line, it means about 1/2 or one out of every two Nigerians is extremely poor. This is even a very fair statistics. Over 50% of nigerians are poor while it's about 10% of Indians. 2 Likes |

Jack005: Don't mind him. By percentage, Nigeria is far worse than any country of the world. Close to 50% of our population is living under poverty while India, China that he was trying to compare has less than 10% and 3% respectively. 1 Like |

The population of people living under the index of poverty in China and India are greater in number than the entire population of Nigeria. |
Re: Fact Check: Does Nigeria Have More People Living In Extreme Poverty Than India? by Dedetwo(m): 9:12am On Feb 04, 2021 |
Bamibor: Who vetted this indices in the above statement to certify them as accurate. Very large population of China and India are swimming in abject poverty. Given what the China and India have in terms of technological advancement, it is foolhardy to stray into such comparison. China and India have been given more by technologically advanced countries than Nigeria. |

globemoney: Your analysis is not complete If India and China has a combined population of over 2b and the extreme poverty is 200m people... While Nigeria, with a population of 200m has 50 percent in poverty class then we have more poor people in reality when compared to our population than the two nations combined 1 Like |

I dont talk fairy tails or opinion. Great powers comes and goes, If they learn from their downfall they rise again, same is happening with India and China Even Europe cant be compared with India and China As world`s ancient civilizations both India and China were more rich, More Powerful, More Innovative then entire Europe. India and China both had 82% of entire worlds GDP. For Chinese and Indians the Education, Entrepreneurship, Industrial mindset is with them for 5000 years when Europe was living in caves. Chinese were doing research on Explosive chemicals during Ming Times. India was the birthplace of Trigonometry, Complex mathematics (Vedic). Number system that we use in today's world was developed by Indians and same knowledge passed to Spain(ie. Europe) by Arab traders. We are not fortunate and focused like them, Since when we have started studying mathematics and science in this continent?? from 70s. so where is the comparison? If we can make a good schooling available to public and good hospitals in next 30 years then we are successful. Lets focus on ourselves but yes as long as Religion exist, there is almost no hope for us. And no, Not very large population is living in poverty , they are eliminating poverty at astonishing speed, that we cant imagine, while here it is on rise. This continent has very long journey to go, Nothing shame in accepting that our countries are shithole of this planet. Dedetwo: |
