Hello House,

I stumbled upon this thread on Friday and took me up till now to catch up. Read every page till the last page, I must commend everyone that have contributed so far.

So here is my story, I have been working on getting involve in poultry farming for a while now and have been working diligently to achieve this.

Land purchased about 11.5 plots somewhere in ogun state fenced it all around.

Just finished the staff quaters and the office block with two security houses. As well all know it's capital intensive.

I had this grand plan of going full scale commercial but having read through this blog I'm rethinking my strategy.

The next phase of my project is constructing the pen itself, which up to date seems to be the most expensive single construction yet.

The proposed capacity should house about 13500 birds. Of course I'm not starting with that much. I'm just thinking long term.

So I've been given the dimension of the pen. What I need to know from the house is, how much realistically should this pen cost?

The dimension is length 80m, Width 12m and height 3.5.

Many thanks.

Prepare for 8 million naira

Prepare for 8 million naira

Many thanks for your response, I have been quoted in excess of 10 million naira.

I have been given the list of material required and was told source them then the company wanted around 500k for supervision because I told them I have my own labourers working on site already.

I am in the process of getting the prices for the list that was given to find out the cost.

Will keep the house updated on my progress. If anyone is intrested in the list I'll be happy to post it.

Also has anyone ever heard of a company called Facco, they supply cages, both automatic and semi automatic cages.

I am thinking of using them for my cages.

Many thanks.

Annabechick. Massive one. Congrats. From here, the width of the pen seems below minimum standard. What is the width here, pls? jamp, sir. How far with your cost-cutting measures vis-à-vis self milling? Have you considered buying grounded maize/wheat offal & do floor mixing with concentrates?

as adviced in this forum, milling is the way forward. we have some challenges as regards milling, we are making arrangements to start milling towards the end of the year when our next batch of 2000(coming this july) will start laying.

in the mean time we have switched to animal care for all our 3 batches. this move will save us about 1,900 daily.

jamp, sir. I think you are on the right path. I'm also using Animal Care Layers mash & the result has been excellent. Presently, I'm thinking of switching to floor-mixing. All the materials will be gotten from Animal Care Depot here. That will save me about #200 on each bag.

Don't throw their prices away they could have considered many things as I have given you a back of the envelope estimate rather scrutinize it before coming to a conclusion. If you make this kind of investment in building I would suggest you go for automated cages. The building could house 25,000 - 41,000 birds. Facco is good an Italian company, you can also try www.hellmannpoultry.com

Annabechick. 20feet? Isn't that too small? Are you thinking of having just 1 row of cages? I thought the minimum standard is between 24 & 26 feet. Experts in pen construction; what is your take? M/w, I think the pen is too close to the entrance gate. The birds may be prone to infectious diseases carried by people coming in and out of the premises. Put an off-limit sign somewhere between the gate & the pen, pls

Antibiotic-Free Method Protects Chickens from Coccidiosis
09 June 2015

US - A University of Wisconsin-Madison animal scientist has developed an antibiotic-free method to protect food-producing animals from common infections.
The innovation comes as growing public concern about antibiotic resistance has induced McDonald's, Tyson Foods and other industry giants to announce major cuts in antibiotic use in meat production.
About 80 per cent of antibiotics in the United States are used by farmers, because they both protect against disease and accelerate weight gain in many farm animals, but recently announced regulations will put an end to the use of antibiotics for production purposes by the end of 2016.
The overuse of antibiotics in agriculture and medicine has created a public health crisis of drug-resistant infections, such as multidrug resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and "flesh-eating bacteria."
"You really can't control the bugs forever; they will always evolve a way to defeat your drugs," said Mark Cook, a professor of animal sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an entrepreneur.
Mr Cook's current work focuses on a fundamental immune "off-switch" called Interleukin 10 or IL-10, manipulated by bacteria and many other pathogens to defeat the immune system during infection.
He and animal sciences associate researcher Jordan Sand have learned to disable this switch inside the intestine, the site of major farm animal infections such as the diarrheal disease coccidiosis.
Mr Cook vaccinates laying hens to create antibodies to IL-10. The hens put the antibody in eggs, that are then sprayed on the feed of the animals he wants to protect. The antibody neutralises the IL-10 off-switch in those animals, allowing their immune systems to better fight disease.
In experiments with 300,000 chickens, those that ate the antibody-bearing material were fully protected against coccidiosis.
"These diseases cause long-term reproduction, production and growth impairments in livestock," said Sheila McGuirk, a professor of medical sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine.
"The affected animals are suboptimal in health, performance and profitability. To have something affordable, safe and nonantibiotic that controls these very important diseases is absolutely awesome. We are eager to study this further."
In the past few years, scientists have learned that a large group of pathogens - including bacteria, single- and multicelled parasites, protozoa, even certain viruses - make a chemical called macrophage migratory inhibition factor, or MIF, which activates the IL-10 mechanism to shut down the host animal's immune system.
"This apparently arose deep in the evolutionary past, and it's wholesale piracy of the immune system," said Mr Sand.
Mr Cook and Mr Sand, who have been working on the IL-10 system since 2011, are forming Ab E Discovery LLC to commercialise their research. One of the four patents they have filed through the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation has just been granted, and WARF has awarded a $100,000 Accelerator Program grant to the inventors to pursue the antibiotic-replacement technology.
The benefits of reducing farm usage of antibiotics should extend to workers' families and the wider population. Significantly more people working in conventional chicken farms carry multidrug-resistant pathogens than those who work in antibiotic-free farms, Mr Sand noted.
A non-antibiotic method to prevent pathogens from shutting down the immune system seems far less conducive to resistance than the current routine feeding of antibiotics, Mr Cook said.

I think b4 you consider milling your feed, you should consider if the ingredients are cheap in your locality, then consider the cost vis a vis off the shelf feed. It might be cost effective for ppl in a particular locality to mill but more expensive for others.

It will be nice to post the formular that have worked for growers and layers mash.

I just got 10 plots of 60*100 for my farm and each time I think of fencing it, my heart skips.

That should be my next year project but I need to know estimate of what am saving for.

Slowly but surely, I will get there.

I even have another challenge, after I bought land for my farm, estates are springing up in the location , left right and centre. I just hope I won't have issues with them in the long run.

Please when your layers start laying but the quantity is not much to take to the market, do you wait till you have enough before you sell them.

How long does it take for egg to spoil?
