"Imo Women Are Not Getting Married Due To High Cost Of Marriage And Bride Price" - Hon. Kennedy Ibeh

Hon. Kennedy Ibeh, representing Obowo State constituency in Imo State House of Assembly, has sponsored a bill to regulate the cost of customary marriages in Imo State, IgbereTV reports.

Presenting the bill for the second reading on Wednesday, March 10, during plenary, Ibeh said that outrageous marriage bills had caused many ladies to remain single as suitors can't afford to pay.

He said: "A suitor coming to pay for a lady’s dowry may find it tasking to settle for the English wedding which again demands for more expenses."

He added: "It is quite unfortunate that this practice has caused so many of our marriageable ladies to remain single and men apprehensive of taking the bold step. This is wrong and we must discourage it at all costs."

The bill asks that once a suitor pays and completes the bride price of a woman, a clearance certificate should be issued to the groom by the father of the bride, who will present the certificate to the traditional ruler of the community for the final issuance of Customary Marriage Certificate (CMC) at the cost not exceeding N1000.

It adds that no customary marriage in the state, including the final stage of the Igbankwu cermony, shall exceed the sum of N180,000 with exclusion of the bride price which shall not exceed N80,000.

This is a welcome idea.

I can't imagine how guys spend so much on some of these girls....

To imagine that a girl that's;

NOT A VIRGIN...

HAVE AT LEAST 10 BODY COUNTS ALREADY...

NOT REALLY GOING TO Contribute to the marriage etc, will require SO MUCH TO MARRY....

NONSENSE!

NA HOW YOUR TOTO BE AND HOW MUCH YOU'RE BRINGING TO THE TABLE IN THE MARRIAGE SUPPOSED DETERMINE BRISE PRICE.

Girls with more than 2 body counts do not deserve bride price.

Welcome development if passed into law. High bride price has made many prospective bridegrooms have a rethink. It's an illwind that blows nobody any good.

I still remember when elder bro wanted to marry from there, it was so shocking to see one G- wagon Mercedes benz for the father of the bride, and a range rover for the mother... naso we read list the laugh, my brother been drive 1999 model Toyota Camry, when we remember it, we even laugh more... we tried all we could but to no avail.. las las senior man yappa o.

Imo people think they're doing me, they don't know they're doing their daughters.

The critical aspect of marital rite is bride price and it is one thing that is widely acceptable to solidify marriage.
Bride price varies from tribe to tribe and it depends on the custom and tradition of each family.
Some people believe that it is a way to safeguard marriage while others believe, it is a way of selling their children especially the girls cheaply.
But, whatever the case maybe.
It is expected of both families to take rightful steps and decisions when their children are proposing to marry.

Here is a A TYPICAL MARRIAGE LIST IN IGBO LAND.

Let them pass a bill to regulate the cost of housing. Especially in Lagos. It's alarming.

Marriage is a personal issue, they should stay out of it.
The most pressing one now is the rate at which landlords are inflating house rents and the spaces in these houses are so small....

The govt should help us look into this as well. it's crazy.

This is a very good move. We have to face reality. There are no jobs and many businesses aren't doing well.
Cut down on the cost of marriage, and entice more interested and mature ones take the bold step.
This bill is win win for both young men and women.

All these instances wey men wey de give women belle, and they are automatically married will soon disappear.
