I did the same 3 years ago and it's not all beds and roses.
I will advice you to do the same if:
1. Your people are not the nagging type.
2. You have something to fetch you a side income while learning..... I am about to setup up a soap company after learning about life the hard way.
3. You can dedicate yourself to programming.
I am a Systems developer and I just laugh when people who don't know shit about code come to give me advice on how to go about my career.
It's difficult out here without school.....no more free Toto, you will have to pay with your blood, that was why I spoke earlier on having something doing.
My mom supports me, my father nags and threatens me to go back to Uni.
Yes, I will get the benefits of a paper certificate, plus free knacking combined with the fact that I am beginning to make some cash, but there's a price you pay for success.

If you drop out, you have closed alot of doors to yourself.
What do you do?
You develop your skill or write a killer project and bring them knocking on your doorstep.
I wish you the very best.

As a veteran senior programmer, I’ll advise you to make programming a hobby and not drop out of school. Don’t even try to learn programming by force, you have to make it a hobby, something you love doing when you are not doing your school works. Programming can be draining and frustrating depending on what level of programming you are. If you have the mindset of dropping out of school, then it’ll be easier for you to give up on programming when you are getting to the advanced aspect of it.

The smartest people from schools end up as employees who make more money for billionaires, many billionaires didn't go to university because they had a plan bigger than wasting 5 years in a 1800s classroom setting

Can you please list those billionaires that didn't go to school?

More so, you have been saying he should drop out to pursue his"CAREER". Do you even know what a "CAREER" means?

Sorry son.

I see people saying.. He has closed alot of opportunities if he drop out.. Programming itself is schooling.. Things has changed alot than wasting 5 good years in d classroom in the name of schooling while u can learn virtually everything online. The so called handouts are limited in scope. Show me that lecturer that knows more than the internet. So who are we deceiving. Google is the best University so far. U cant explore it very well and not succeed. You can merge both at the same time. Won’t be east but it would be totally worth. I’de say you can share ur academic and programming in a 30:70 ratio respectively.

U can always do programming along side or when u finish.

I know a gal who studied geology worked briefly with an oil servicing firm and then decided to study programming which she achieved now. So don’t get discouraged. Finish ur degree because this is Nigeria.

No need to drop out yet, Continue studying and take on programming side gigs in your school. When it is time for IT, look for a software company to do your IT so you can gain industrial experience as a Software Engineer.

If you drop out right now. you will be a freelance for too long as not many companies are ok with the skill set only yet. But if the aim is to be an entrepreneur, wait no more.

Most people don’t. Like school, but it’s better to have a certificate when asked for one than to have none at all
Re: Thinking Of Dropping Out Of College To Focus On Programming by Fixed: 8:24pm On May 27, 2021
Some people are quick to make very fallacious statements. "Who school help?", "School trains you to be a slave", "You will forever be an employee and never a boss of your own".
The poster is also falling into the same error by saying many graduates are living from hand to mouth. This is a very shallow reason for dropping out of school Show me 1 unschooled person that is doing well and I will show you thousands that are doing much better.
I strongly advise the poster to remain in school and combine programming with it. Education gives you better exposure to life and broadens your mind. Your software could be the breakthrough that is desperately needed in that field of study. If you are truly brilliant as claimed, then you can always work this out.
Lastly, you don't even know where the certificate will be required in the future, not necessarily the school knowledge, by which time it would have been too late.

I swear to God the guy will learn life,

I relate with you cos i dropped out a year earlier at fvvcking 300level saying I want to go into business, school is a scam, fvck 9-5 blah blah, mine i wasn't even interested in the course but if i tell you the course you'll say I don't have sense I should have finished it.

Not that I wasn't brilliant, in my time i had double admission to Uniben & UI bck then UI still took 2nd choice.

Only 3 years into a 5 year course I say i wan go do business my other pal said he wanted to go into script writing (in Nigeria grin) back them we both had big dreams, we read about Zuckerberg, gates & jobs followed strive mayisiwa on Facebook dey gather inspiration, draw business plan, before we finally dropped out, as we enter street omo i see I saw my brother.

That's where i learnt plan on paper is different from implementation in real life.

Even another random guy that was in his 3rd year that just completed his 2nd semester exams and passed without carry over see as we dey ginger follow us drop out.

These two guys I don't even know where dey are now, the last time i spoke to one of em was last year October, everybody is now pushing little stuffs just to survive.

At least i'm doing a bit better now but omo e no easy.

If he likes let him learn, or go the hard way, i know i shouldn't compare mrA to mrB but don't forget na nigeria you dey.

The fact that you're in nigeria the odds are already AGAINST you.

It depends on where you are schooling. To be honest, current Nigerian universities are a total waste of time.

Na when I travel enter Yankee, na when I come realize say I just waste my years learning strictly criminality. Na when my own morning start.

E get country where you go dey, wey go make sense to go do both or just go school; And if your school is socially conducive, then don't drop out, if not, look harder at your decision.

Just because you went to school or didn't go to school, don't mean you stop learning. The wise ones know that learning and teaching is life long. Customize your learning goals.

I dun dey make money like a Treasury now, and no be by mistake. Na dedication, work, and some luck. People dey even suspect say na ritual or Yahoo. I send them b4.

I no dey too like give my gems. But is okay.
Customize your knowledge goals by seeing what doable knowledge will help you achieve your goals. I dun go Spain, meet naija person wey dey sell soap, I think say na wash. Until I see the way he use dey explain him products, I cun see why he get customers. He go make you feel like say wetin you dey do good, but you neva still catch up if you no dey use him own. The guy know all the science involved, including the uv ray effects in regards to his soap. His website and app is simple but knowledgeable.

I dun see mechanic for Namibia wey get advanced machinery tools with no customer, due to bad management and over confidence; and one wey dey inside cut (coded spot) with not much presentation, but customer dey gree wait for hours or days at a time.

So it is not what people tell you to study or the hype at the time, you have to grind through your mental state, after you and your brain tells you what your wishes are. Just be realistic and know that bends and hills will try your stamina.

Programming always changes or updates, so be ready to change and update with it.

Good luck in your endeavours.

What about time resourcefulness and connecting with like minds in school to create a world class project before dropping out.
The essence for dropping out is because you already achieved a multimillion dollar project and not for the sake of pursuing your passion.

Imma keep it real with you Sonny, don't venture into programming if you don't have money for data or good food.

E get why.

There are times you'd just smash your PC and scream fuckit, I want out when you can't debug a line of code...been there, done that.

Secondly, you need to be on some NOOTRPOICS (cognitive enhancement drugs...adderrall, modafinil, etc)

Here are some gems you can fuccc with, cheers.

You might want to listen to BLESSED (schoolboy Q ft Kendrick Lamar) while reading this while you light up a blunt, it'd help you a lot

Know this and know peace.

you can hit the ground running with a few tips below I you don't have any profitable venture at the monent, this..can be applied to almost anything if you think critically.

imma keep it real with you like my brother from another mother, The educational system in Nigeria has been watered down a great deal but there are still opportunities for grassroot hustlers, best believe that.

All you need now is a hustler's ambition / mindset, you need to grind like one who has no mother or father, its cold out there.

In Nigeria, there are two classes of people (Living things and non living things)...you need to be amongst the living and stop whinning and complaining about this and that, nobody has it easy. If everyone comes to Nairaland beer parlor with his or her story, you go thank God for your life.

Bum imma share some gems with you real quick and if you are street wise, you will take action immediately.

If you must make it in Nigeria, you must think like an OUTLAW. push your fine boy and degree aside, roll up your sleeves and hit the ground running.

however, If you are techy (digital marketing, ecommerce, mini importation, UI / UX, Graphics Design, Video editing)

If you are dead broke don't venture into programming, you cannot effectively learn programming on an empty stomach with lack of data

If you are hands on Plumbing, woodwork, electrical, interior design solar design and installation, phone and laptop repair

Let me give you a brotherly advice, and I hope you work on it...
First of all I counsel people and I have done that on nairaland for a while... I have met great and good guys...
I dropped a story about my experience teaching in two schools as a corper and would not mind partnering with schools in abuja, but some accused me of looking for teaching job... Never ever mind what people say...
Back to the matter...
As a graduate, teaching and earning 15k, e no bad... But once you have a good (android) phone, go to any car stand of your choice around your area... Listen well, any good car stand and ask to see the manager... Tell him you want to help him market his cars and get good buyers... 90% of car stand managers will sign u on... Tel him you will be paid a small commission after sales...
Pick up your phone, snap as many cars as your phone memory can take, open a dedicated twitter ac, IG ac, Facebook ac, WhatsApp ac, ac etc... Take out time to post this cars, make sure you have the actual prices of this cars... You can add as much as #250k on it... Bring down the negotiations to as low as making #50k if need be just so I can sell. Set your monthly target... I assure you, if you get I client in a month, u make around #100,000k once you start growing, you can get as much as 5-10 client from all over the country and that hits you over #1m for just helping others sell their cars, Note all you invested was your time, energy, phone and data... No big financial capital...
Do not restrict yourself to cars, go for industrial machines as well, caterpillars, mikano gens, any thing, then you look for those big companies that need them and try to call their attention to it or market it to them... You may not sell in 3 months but when you manage to get a client to buy just 1 caterpillars, my brother you will instantly forget that u suffered before...
A friend of mine was marketing a silo for a local wielder, he received a call all the way from kebbi state, the purchase was made in Ilorin, he made #1.8 mil from buyers and #400k from seller... He still got a referral from that deal. Wake up bro...
Within a month or two, come and pay (tite).
I drive uber/bolt in abuja, market cars, sell commodities such as beans, maize, wheat,
ginger, onions, name it... In bags and tonnes
And I make nothing less than half a mil monthly...We all blessed my nigga !

Reach me privately if you are interested in gadget importation and sales from US.

My friend, that's a foolish thing you are about to do. But thank your stars that you asked for advice.

Without a degree, I can assure you that you have less than 5% chance of getting good jobs as a programmer. So don't even try it...

I think you are new to programming, so you are engrossed with the stories of the Zuckerberg and Larry Ellisons of this world who dropped out of college to build the next big thing.

My friend, you are in a dream land, 99.99% of programmers won't have that stories. So pinch yourself and get out dream of your dream now before you start racking up D's in your courses.

That degree you want to abandon is actually what you'll need to get a good job even in programming - it doesn't matter wether it's Economics or botany. If you have a degree and you are good in programming, trust me, you will get a good programming job.

But if you don't have a degree, you will blame yourself for your decision...
