It is obvious that so many people who have made comments on this ssue do not know anything about the course called sociology.

FIRST, in Nigeria which course of study Will authomatically provide you a hobi after you have graduated from the University. You all know how hard to get a job in this country as a graduated? So that apply to sociology too.

I study sociology in the University and i can tell you that i work with Citizen and leadership training centre under the ministry of youth and sport but i got the job 10 years after i have graduated from school and within that 10 years i was hustling on my own as a farmer and which i am still doing along side the govt job.

Op, Let me advise you that no course of study is bad it all depends on your mind set and how best you deal with information you might have gotten anywhere. This is because as a sociologist you can work in any organization as long as there are human begins or animals in the organization.

There is no any organization that does not have the social aspect of their organization and all we do as a people is social. Anywhere people are gathering they engage in social activities or social gathering for instance, Football and all other sports are social gathering, there is medical sociology which involves medication without the use of drugs or administering drugs. Sociologist are also into different forces.

There is social works which has numerous aspect in which a graduate of sociology can fix in easily. There are so.many more you can consult Google.

Abroad, you can be an outbound educator , a life guard any many more. So dont let any one tell you anything less.

That's a huge lie. They can work in NGOs. No be by certificate na sabificate. What skills do have. They can enroll for free online courses like project management, nutrition, logistic and commodity management, monitoring & evaluation, data analysis, data science, humanitarian courses etc. Then enroll for public health (M.Sc/Mph) or Health management and while at it volunteer/intern for an NGO to gain experience. By the time you package your c.v, you will go places.

Your very answer supports my position. What other skills do people who read Medicine, Law, Accounting, etc need to have to 'go places' Huh?! grin

As far as Nigeria and other shithole countries are concerned, Sociology is a waste.

Don't waste your four years on these courses that they will tell you that their graduates can work anywhere.

Anywhere is nowhere

Anybody is entitle to jus or her opinion put the truth is that those who are condemming sociology or any other course where are they working?

Dele momodu study yoruba in school and chevk Dele momodu today.

Whateveryou study in the University in Nigeria depends on your ability to get to where you want.

You people can even say studying Agriculture is a waste of time but the question what did you study in school and where are you working?

Studied Sociology and Anthropology. Applied for a managerial job with zero cognate experience. Got the job. Company folded up because of poor takeoff fund.

Became the only one retained by the group out of 400 staff. Transferred to the marine arm of the group. Gained some experience. Hurricane Buhari came in 2015, company shut down.

Applied for another, MD got interested in me during interview. Why? Because he felt that since I studied Sociology, I'll be a very good communicator and that my social engineering skills are top notch.

Today, I'm running stuff in the maritime service sector.

No course is useless!!! Just package and refine yourself and know a bit of everything.

Lol... victim here!

Sociology is officially the most useless course on Earth! I advice my students to rewrite JAMB the next year if they are offered courses like Sociology, Philosophy, etc with no chance to cross to a more meaningful course in 200l.

This is a deeply worrisome yet highly ignorant opinion. Every society is a product of sociology (the study of the social interactions that result in society). For you to have confidently disclosed such a short sighted perception, there suggests you either studied or know someone who did. Sadly most who study Sociology do so after their 'dream course' found them no good and dumped them in Sociology.

post=110036167:
A bachelor degree in sociology serves as an excellent springboard for a variety of careers in many diverse fields

With additional study beyond a bachelor's in sociology, majors in this field can also go on to pursue careers in social work, law, market research, counseling, public relations, polling, media planning, and other areas.

No knowledge is ever lost but the hard truth remains
that, no one with any kind of degree is going to walk into a job.

We Rise.

Distinguished, this is the problem I have with your position - the word 'springboard'.

Have you stopped to ask how many graduates in Nigeria will have the financial grit to take on another Degree or PG?

Why do they have to spend FOUR YEARS to study a Springboard? cheesy Why not just go for the career you want to SPRINGBOARD to?!

You see the problem?

I don't respond to trolls but for sake of your own enlightenment, here goes.

You see this statement -

Every society is a product of sociology (the study of the social interactions that result in society).

It reeks of ignorance. The topic of this thread is 'Graduates of Sociology' (the COURSE!) How exactly does that rope in a graduate of Physics, Bio-Chem, Mathematics, Elect-Elect, etc? Every Course is a conceptual study of Matter and Society... does that make them 'Graduates of SOCIOLOGY'?!

Also, how do you say this -

This is a deeply worrisome yet highly ignorant opinion.

...and this -

For you to have confidently disclosed such a short sighted perception, there suggests you either studied or know someone who did.

...in the same breathe, when you clearly saw I stated this -

... victim here

Do you see the irony or you need me to point it out?

Please where is your farm located and how safe and lucrative is the business if I may ask? Also, how much capital is needed to start?
Kingbenn:
Studied biology in the university but guess what? I'm now a farmer and a filmmaker, still exploring other sectors of the economy. No course is useless.

My advice is, to learn a skill alongside your studies while in school and make sure you practice what you've learned. You will thank me laterr

It's a pity Nigeria is fast becoming a failed nation,we hope God intervene and make things right for this country again.
As we know, connection is the main thing in the country now .....but...

As a Sociologist, you can actually work in a NGO;
You can work as an administrative personnel in a company and start climbing career ladder from there;
You can work in a supply chain department as a procurement officer or specialist;
You can work in a school as either academic or non-academic staff;
You can work in media houses;
You can advance your career as an analyst, working in brokerage firm;
....and so on.

What I'll advice and usually advice is to go for professional course after your first degree or masters.....
Think it's more advantageous this way.

I study sociology and i am working with citizen and leadership trainning centre under the misnistry of youths and sport and i am buildi g my career from there just that to get work in Nigeria you have to know someone who knows someone to know someone.
