One is left hanging on a string and at a cross road: if you have experienced a dying relative without the attention of a doctor, if you have been told that there is no doctor on seat and your father's life is there, before you, trembling on the balance, perhaps those sympathetic to the brain drain will have a second thought, moreover, let us face it; the cost of training a medical doctor in Nigeria, or indeed, in Africa is very cheap compared to western world. why not give back to your country? If all should go who will care for our beloved parents?
On the flip side many doctors here complain of inadequate or obsolete medical equipment!
Me thinks the government should place a limit every year and makes it mandatory for a doctor to serve for a stipulated time before thinking of going abroad. Or what do you think

many do complain about the non existent facilities but nothing ever gets done, let me ask you ,how many govt hospitals have a functioning MRI? none. Go to Afe babalola in Ado Ekiti ,they have 2. The truth is that the govt doesn't simply care since they can travel out to treat whatever they want, their family members are mostly abroad so they don't feel the need to equip our hospitals, its not only docs that travel, even other health workers too are leaving out of frustration. You want to them to work without quality tools?
i know of a doctor who just had to leave this country, he had a passion for interventional cardiology, no equipment to train him, he is in the USA now, even if he were to use his newly acquired knowledge here, how will he practise?
its a very bad situation even security wise ,is it not just yesterday we read of a doc working with that benin teaching hospital who was murdered, if you have the means to leave better do.

Which enabling environment are u talking about.. what is better than a society where some particular health services are scarce...

Leme tell u something.. a certain doctor in my neighborhood, has a hospital and does normal general practitioning.. all the labs he sent patient to do diagnoses have a limit to their machine.. they don't have either CT scan or MRI scan....

He went to get a loan from BOI and bought MRI... It became the first in the whole senatorial zone...

People refer people to him from everywhere whenever there is a difficult diagnosis. The man charges like hell..

Infact he makes over 50million monthly cuz of that.. now go and tell that one to go abroad or tell him no better enabling environment... I pity u.

All this lazy docs wants is govt. To create big big hospitals every where and employ them and pay Dem millions monthly, that way good environment has developed... Lazy people

Well, speaking as a doctor , I don't necessarily want a 'big hospital' where they would 'pay me millions' per se, I want a working healthcare system with decent emergency response, good referal system, and good health insurance.

It's because you don't work on the frontline that you think the way you do. I do, and have, and have spent a lot of time being misreable and upset when I cannot help a patient because we don't have x or y. (like the time one neonate I was looking after died because we did not have a NICU we could send her to)

Plus your story about the doctor with the MRI....MRI machines cost a lot of money. And he is probably getting some referrals via NHIS, who don't pay all the money, plus not every patient would pay the money they need. Finally, do you know the guy's mortgage cost? You know, he also took a loan to build a hospital, including the facilites for the MRI, finally MRI cost a lot to maintain. Most of those millions go to fixing the machine and keeping it in good working order. If it breaks down, you have to send for repairmen and women from outside the country...at high cost.

Back to my life. I spent 6 years of my working life working in rural medicine. Never again. You want to know how painful it is to see patients dying because you don't have the facilites to help them, and they don't have the money to pay.? Or the hospitals in the rural areas that close down because they cannot make a profit to keep up ? Or the patients that do not take their drugs regulalry because they cannot afford it.? Or the people who cannot afford the even subsidized CS that is offered? And so on and so forth.

Or the fact that most hospitals don't have MRI and CT or even X rays?

After a while people get fed up and leave the country. I'm still here. I don't know why. I did run to the city eventually, because after a while the pain of seeing people suffer because of negligence....is too too much.

Same thing in many African countries.

That's why every time people yell at my colleagues who have left the country, I just sigh. We want a better working healthcare system. We are not interested in kicking APC out so that PDP can come in, we just want a well funded healthcare system. 2 billion dolalrs for 200 MILLION people. And you expect us to do miracles with that?

Vote for people who would increase the revenue Nigeria earns, not people who are interested in sharing money like PDP and APC do. And please, don't talk to me about patriotisms, when you have not walked a mile in me and my colleagues shoes. When you haven't held the hand of a ten year old, dead because his parents could not bring him to hospital on time, until it got too bad, because, poverty.

And yeah, after a while, you just say 'What the eff' and write PLAB and go to a country where at least, you know you can refer a sick child and the child would get treated immediately.

Yeah, mockery is what people do when they have nothing to say.
They should ask the oversea-based doctor son of late Dr. Mailafia , former CBN deputy governor. When his late dad collapsed and he was on frantic calls attempting to give instructions of intervention to revive his dying dad, he was ignored.
If you are trained in Nigeria and you head overseas, Guys who stay back to serve and build Nigeria do not take you serious.

For the record

1.Mr Mailafia had covid. There was nothing his son or the doctors on ground could do.

2.Plus they could not move him to an ICU unit on time, because we have limited icu beds, courtesy of your government past and present not planning well. That's why many of us backed lockdowns...covid running wild would have been disastrous.

3.And even then, there was nothing that could have been done, so your assertion makes no sense.

4.And as a Nigerian based doctor, I listen to my colleagues abroad when they call me about patients, so WTF are you talking about?

They ,especially those trained with tax payers money but who immediately eloped overseas, should enjoy it while it lasts or just do themselves a favour, take your parents along for the time being wink

Jealous much?
For those of you from non-dysfunctional family background, my advice to you is; do not join them on a voyage that usually end in regret.
Some of them are moving to stay far away as possible from their dysfunctional family background and most times most of them never return or return until hardship, hunger and lack of care as a result of abandonment of their parents eventually terminate the lives of their poor parents.

Projection and lies much?

There is a reason why despite all the 'green pastures' they see and claim to recieve overseas, no single one has made it to the Forbes list.

Dang, none of us when studying for our degree were planning to go Forbes. Plus how many people in the world make the Forbes list? There are many succesful doctors globally that haven't made the Forbes list

Plus your grammar about Forbes is a red herring to distract from the problems with welfare and financing in the healthcare sector.

Doctors don't work to make money, we work to cure patients. Yes, we need money because we still have to live a normal life, and we have to fund our postgrad exams, CME programmes, skills acquisitions (eg BLS, ATLS, which cost money!) to treat you better. All in Nigeria.

You can not cheat the tax payers that their resources were used to train you and wishfully think you can build a sustainable wealth from cheating them, it is a lie. You will lose las las and one more thing; Your children will abandon you too and reality will hit you hard.

Ah, all this curses just because....your party looks bad from the doctor exodus?

Grow up please.

The Cuban healthcare professionals are one of the least paid in the world yet they are very patriotic and they stay back in their country for the love of their parents and their fatherland.

Yeah and
1.many of them are on low pay, to the point that they have to do side hustle to survive

2.Their government rents them out to other countries to earn money. Money none of them see.

3.The Cuban health care system is in a mess. They do public health well because they have no choice.
Here is why I blame FG, you use tax payers money to train them and allow them transfer your resources they held in trust to the service of another country and for years now being watching these ungrateful ' exports' return home with regrets, spent and even behind their class mates who stayed back to avoid the "curse of the taxpayers"

Okay, pass a law stopping everyone, you included, from going abroad to get a job. Happy now? .

Whoever wants to take the next flight overseas can go tomorrow, but for as long as you were trained with tax payers money and you did not return the value of the sweat of the taxpayers invested in you, you will lose las las. Yours will be another statistics to be added to those who embarked on a voyage of regret. And you will still not make Forbes list like the others that cheated taxpayers before you.

You don't know why we go abroad? because we want to practice in a system that works, not one where for the nth time we have to comfort a mother whose child has died because we don't have x at the primary or secondary level...

And because we want to improve ourselves skill and professional wise.

Money is a secondary concern.

Plus, get your government to improve things.

In fact, your own case will be worse than that of some folks I know. You can not cheat people and get away. Karma will definitely catch up with you wink

The way you curse, it shows you in a bad light.

Grow up, once again.

And walk a mile in our shoes. Till you have to, for the nth time, see people die or suffer because we don't have x or y or z or cannot do a..and after a while it takes an emotional toll on you, you won't come here to talk the way you do.

You are really filled with hate, and I thought you weren't.

Good afternoon.

Only doctors? What about Osimhen Should he have been made to play at Kano Pillars for some time?

Even among those that do not travel many are working in banks and the oil industry

You say the cost of training doctors is cheap. What about other graduates?

Why only doctors .What is the proportion of graduates that are doctors? IT graduates, Engineering graduate and other are all travelling

At any rate when an MBBS doctor leaves Nigeria he is going to train. Training in facilities with modern equipment that do not exist in Nigeria. You cannot go to UK with MBBS and open a hospital . You can only take post graduate training jobs which are also subsidized in the destination country and those countries too have a claim on the doctor once he completes specialist training

It is in Nigeria that you see a doctor with MBBS opening a hospital or performing surgery without supervision

A little history lesson

In 1984 or 1985 Nigeria used to be a world respected country for medical expertise

Under Buhari doctors went on strike.

Buhari ordered the doctors who were living with their families in official quarters to be evicted with 24 hour notice.

He won the battle but lost the war

It was from that point that the doctor exodus accelerated.

Babangida tried for doctors to be fair but the economy was weak and once the toothpaste is out of the tube it is difficult to put back.

Since that time most doctors in Nigeria start planning their exit before they graduate

If you look around you in Nigeria the reward system is screwed up. There is no connection between ability and financial reward or social status

Such a system cannot retain quality people n a globalized world

There are Nigerian lawyers, professors and other professionals in Canada not just doctors

Lol. Hogwash. There's no taxpayers curse cos all the medics I know abroad are making serious bank. And banging white chicks too. Lol

Also we take the guys who've japa'd very seriously my man. They have the money so we respect them unfaillingly. We're Nigerians, we go where the money calls.
Most doctors you still see around either couldn't migrate or are regretting why they didn't graduate.
Virtually Every fvcking consultant, including some badass names you won't know, advices every medical undergrad to japa.

No hard feelings oga taxpayer. You go where you're treated right and fairly. Rather than focus on Nigerian politicians who've succeeded in eroding all functioning public institutions, so that everything is now a shell of itself, you're here spewing out asinine conjectures like the bitter, vile Nigerian you are.

Talmbout taxpayers curse, lol. People who think like you are one reason why this country is essentially cursed (pun intended).

Focus your energy on the Nigerian president who still takes his check ups in foreign hospitals. Or is there no taxpayers curse for someone who uses sovereign wealth to patronize the medical services of other nations. Una no go ever wan gree get sense.
Rubbish

Hmmm, I don't agree with you abeg. I know many doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals abroad that are living their best lives. The job, like other salaried work, can be stressful but it does not mean they are suffering. Yes, the recent pandemic put a lot of pressure on the health system but they have a better quality of life than the average population.

do you have a problem with comprehension? i never said they are suffering like poor or when does living a disorganized life and living above one’s means equate to being poor ? when a man earns N1 million a month and because he knows he can earn that every month forever - he may incur liabilities on himself, like taking care of extended family members - paying for so much stuff because he makes that much - he may not be living a better life than a man who makes N300k a month and knows how to cut his coat according to his cloth. so u still think much money means happiness ? why do millionaires in the western work les commit suicide if money was all it takes not to be miserable? talking about credit card late payments i mentioned, they may have the money to pay or expecting to get the money to pay for it and yet because they are living a disorganized life they pay late and all that happens everyday - i have medics doctors and nurses as friends and family and i don’t just come here to rant - i have seen this for years and i pity most of them - i have had 2 naija medical doctors who actually quit being doctors here to love to naija - one is an ibo man and the other from auchi in edo state - some naija ladies quit nursing after a while to open beauty supply shops and all that - money is not everything- family time, personal time, leisure and a gist of things makes a person fulfilled in life not just currency digits -

Adriano left his club, inter milan to chill in brazil and won’t play even when he was making $100,000 a week - then that was big money, not now where average players make that a week he said screw it, i am not happy in italy and i want move home- let’s agree adriano was crazy, what about Tevez who left his contract hanging at Man City and even forfeited his £200,000 a week salary just to chill in his native Argentine because he was not happy - you think money is everything , you simply don’t get it!!!!

Jargons. Total bullshit!

You can’t guilt trip people into staying back in the country. People like you are the wicked ones that are holding this country backwards.

What’s with the tax payers money? How does that contribute to education? How many percent of Nigeria’s budget is even allocated to education? Do you know how many people pay millions to attend private schools to get quality education because of the terrible public education system? What do students in public universities even benefit from the government?

You think it’s a privilege for Citizens to have access to cheap quality education? It’s their right! Most developed countries don’t charge their citizens exorbitant tuition fees, even the few courses that they have to pay a lot for, these people have access to loans and grants to help them out. Overseas schools and government make their money from international students tuition, Nigeria’s public education system isn’t even good enough to attract it’s own citizens talk less of attracting international students to come spend their money in the country.

Then talk about the dilapidated state of hospitals and other working environment in the country. Who would want to work under such conditions?

Until you guys begin to target the root cause of problems and start tackling it, those of you staying back to build are only building in vain.

You take your time to attack people that have had enough of the dysfunctional system and chose to relocate instead of addressing the reasons why people are leaving.

You have a terrible mentality, you want to sound smart but in reality, you aren’t. People don’t relocate to get into Forbes list. People don’t even care about Forbes list, they just want sanity and a system that works properly.

If you are trained in Nigeria and you head overseas, Guys who stay back to serve and build Nigeria do not take you serious.

There is a reason why despite all the 'green pastures' they see and claim to recieve overseas, no single one has made it to the Forbes list.

You can not cheat the tax payers that their resources were used to train you and wishfully think you can build a sustainable wealth from cheating them, it is a lie. You will lose las las and one more thing; Your children will abandon you too and reality will hit you hard.

The Cuban healthcare professionals are one of the least paid in the world yet they are very patriotic and they stay back in their country for the love of their parents and their fatherland.

Here is why I blame FG, you use tax payers money to train them and allow them transfer your resources they held in trust to the service of another country and for years now being watching these ungrateful ' exports' return home with regrets, spent and even behind their class mates who stayed back to avoid the "curse of the taxpayers" .

In fact, your own case will be worse than that of some folks I know. You can not cheat people and get away. Karma will definitely catch up with you wink

some of the most miserable people i know in America are medical doctors and nurses -all that money they earn seems to be invisible- they are arrogant- leave above their means - can’t keep a matrimonial home because they are always cheating with colleagues at work, , so disorganized and they think the world revolves around them …… and i dare u to take a ride with any doctor or nurse in their own car - very untidy - wether white, african americans or naija - same pig like behavior to hygiene

i don’t know value of making money without having an organized life and good hygiene - that is rubbish - because they live above their means , they factor overtime wages as their real wages so if they don’t work that overtime - they can’t pay for the bills they got themselves into — and that cones at a cost as there is almost zero family time hence the cheat at the job especially the night doctors and nurses

lastly - medical doctors are not in forbes list because their profession kills their hunger to better themselves business wise so they settle for that $100k to $140k a year job which taxes, mortgage and living above their means will swallow up every penny of it - some doctors i know are behind on credit card payment in America here - not that they dont have the money or can’t raise the money but they are paying for too baby unnecessary things that the leave most part of their lives unattended to - the students loans - hmmm some owe up to $400k in students loans - so the grass is not always greener on the other side

i tell u a restaurant manager with a high school or 2 years associates degree at mcdonald’s who makes $70,000 a year lives a happier and more fulfilled life than a so called medical doctor or nurse who is almost never home and lives a disorganized life

Excuse me sir, the lowest paid medical specialty in usa is $200,000 per year. So I think you should reconstruct your post undecided

do you have a problem with comprehension? i never said they are suffering like poor or when does living a disorganized life and living above one’s means equate to being poor ? when a man earns N1 million a month and because he knows he can earn that every month forever - he may incur liabilities on himself, like taking care of extended family members - paying for so much stuff because he makes that much - he may not be living a better life than a man who makes N300k a month and knows how to cut his coat according to his cloth. so u still think much money means happiness ? why do millionaires in the western work les commit suicide if money was all it takes not to be miserable? talking about credit card late payments i mentioned, they may have the money to pay or expecting to get the money to pay for it and yet because they are living a disorganized life they pay late and all that happens everyday - i have medics doctors and nurses as friends and family and i don’t just come here to rant - i have seen this for years and i pity most of them - i have had 2 naija medical doctors who actually quit being doctors here to love to naija - one is an ibo man and the other from auchi in edo state - some naija ladies quit nursing after a while to open beauty supply shops and all that - money is not everything- family time, personal time, leisure and a gist of things makes a person fulfilled in life not just currency digits -

Like seriously?? angry Why won't Tevez leave such a contract when he has made too much money in his career? I don't really think you understand that money is a motivation. Everyone works for money.
Didn't you hear about some Nigerian doctors who migrated to Saudi Arabia and made 10 times more money... and were working less??

In Nigeria you will attend to millions of patients in a single day and your boss will still be telling you that you have done nothing!
And you will be getting paid 100k per month. Why won't they leave? Why shouldn't they leave?

In fact I'm surprised that 100% of Nigerian trained doctors have not migrated out of the country.

And the funniest part is that a Nigerian professor will not make what a doctor starts to earn in 2 years in UK, which pays doctors 3 times less than in USA. undecided Yes, you read that right, 3 times less than in USA. The lowest paid doctor in usa makes 6 million naira per month.
I will ask again, why shouldn't they leave?? sad

i am not asking anyone to leave - if u read what i posted i never said so… did i ? i only said money and more money does not mean self actualization of happiness - once can be wealthy and miserable - do u get that ? if one works and is so disorganized and his or her life is in tatters the. money and more money is no longer an asset because quality of life is absent

Yeah, mockery is what people do when they have nothing to say.

Jealous much?

Projection and lies much?

Ah, all this curses just because....your party looks bad from the doctor exodus?

Grow up please.

Yeah and
1.many of them are on low pay, to the point that they have to do side hustle to survive

2.Their government rents them out to other countries to earn money. Money none of them see.

3.The Cuban health care system is in a mess. They do public health well because they have no choice.

Okay, pass a law stopping everyone, you included, from going abroad to get a job. Happy now? .

How is Cuban health system a mess? By what metrics or measure?
There are so many ways to judge that and so I am interested in that particular claim

In a mess compared to which system for example?? Tell us a good system

So what's your point?? Are you saying Nigerian doctors are happy??
How can one live an organized life with 100k Naira per month and still be working from morning till night ??
Our Nigerian doctors are too talented to be working in a bad healthcare system here. If the government doesn't do something fast, Nigeria will and should continue to experience brain drain. They deserve good remuneration. And if they don't get it here, they must get it somewhere else.

You better don't let any motivational speaker deceive you! Money answers all things, even the Bible confirms that. It's far better to have money than not to. If someone doesn't know how to use money, then that's the person's problem.

calm down - i make nothing less than $100k a year but let me tell u something my brother - i don’t know your earning bracket but i pray if u are not making money, someday God will make u earn a lot and u will remember my words

when i visit Nigeria - there are people i see and visit and i know they don’t make more than N100k a month and they have a wife who probably makes N60k a month and they way they live and the happiness they have - some people here making $75,000 a year can only wish for that balance and happiness

have u not heard of african americans leaving america - i mean those making nothing less than 50,000 dollars a year and relocating to ghana to live ? if nigeria was safe they would have been coming there too

i will leave the argument here - someday, and i pray soon, u will remember me and my words

i am not saying nigerian doctors shouldn’t earn a decent pay in nigeria - my argument is money and lots of money is not a guarantee for happiness and self fulfillment, if that was the case, billionaires and multimillionaires won’t be committing suicide even here in America

Bill Gates and Melinda Gates won’t be divorced today, Tiger Woods won’t be a divorcée some years ago - Kanye West won’t be divorced from Kim Kadeshian, there is more to life than making lots of money - having balance in life is everything

thanks!

Look, good work life balance is a relative thing. For example, doctors in the UK make 3 times less than those in the USA but still have good lifestyle.

I'm not saying those who have money don't have problems, but those problems are "uncalled for" and should not exist. It is better to have money than not to.
You can't tell me that money is not a spice in marriage and relationships. You want to have a good and spicy marriage life, the most advisable thing is to hustle or get a good job if you don't have a lotta cash.
It is far better to live in affluence than to live in abject poverty. Go and ask the celebrities of today and they will tell you the same thing.

There is no advantage of being broke. Of course, there are people who are happy with very little money, but I'll remind you again that they're re not very happy. The advantages of being wealthy are just infinite.

the example i made of a restaurant manager earning $75k being happy explains your own answer - we are saying the same thing just that your answer is kinda extreme - $75k a year is by no means a small money in the US - and anyone making $75k a year is not a rich man but can never be called broke in America

Bros - I am not against wealth -i burst my as s everyday to earn money and i wish to make more than i am earning right now, but the difference of how to go about that is my mindset - i won’t lose basic sleep time trying to earn more or sacrifice my health, family and comfort, and allow myself to be so disorganized by working almost all weekend and average of 12 hours plus a day like most medical workers do - thats the difference - come to America and date a naija nurse, you won’t see her to spend time with - she or he is always signing in for over time - and i was dating one before and guess what that ended our relationship because we are together only chatting - and she ended up dating a fellow muse at her job, whom she may be having a quickie with because that one too works her schedule … it’s crazy, come to the US and see how medical schedule is destroying and separating families especially our naija people

However, most software engineers make $150k average a year and they work 30 to 36 hours a week - such would be hard to live a disorganized life because they have time to have a life after work - i don’t mean one should live in poverty but a career that makes that work/ life balance elusive is not what any sane person who value family and enjoying life to the fullest would wish for - i was not created to be a slave to money, money was made for us to spend not we getting spent by money

take care!

1.There is no good system of health care (US is too expensive, UK and Canada are good, but waiting times hellish, plus UK is not as comprehensive as US, and so forth).

2.Cuban doctors have many of the issues that Nigerian doctors have. The article linked below should give you an idea.

The Cuban hustle: Doctors drive cabs and work abroad to make up for meager pay

From the article

He knew as a child that he wanted to be a doctor, like his father. He went to medical school, became a general surgeon and ultimately a heart specialist. He practiced at Cuba’s premier cardiovascular hospital, performed heart transplants, and published articles in medical journals.

For this, Roberto Mejides earned a typical doctor’s salary: about $40 a month.

It wasn’t nearly enough, even with the free housing and health care available to Cubans, to support his extended family. So in 2014, Mejides left them behind, moving to Ecuador to earn up to $8,000 a month working at two clinics and performing surgeries

Guy I do not need to read any article

Simple question by what metrics do we determine "good" or "bad" systems

The obvious answer is how healthy are the people in that country?
So there must be some measure e.g life expectancy, infant mortality, maternal mortality or something else
To just declare a system is a "mess" is arbitrary and unscientific
Healthcare is not about doctors. You can have a very healthy population with a low per capita ratio of doctor if other factors are in place e,g clean water, adequate nutrition, healthy lifestyle factors like exercise, not smoking, not drinking excessively absence of pollution, good sanitation , vaccinations and literacy

Cuba has a life expectancy of 78 which is excellent by any measure
