I believe they got a better deal.
Our mothers are not stupid you know, during their time, men generally had more opportunities than women, getting married was more beneficial to them, most don't even have a Place in their fathers house, marriage gave them a place of their own, some didn't attend secondary school and decades later, they have graduates as kid, house(s) in their names etc.
