We like to spend money on white elephant infrastructure

He mentioned tonnes of cement and litres of diesel used as if it's affordable to the common man.

Until the common man can feel the impact, those infrastructures are only feeding people at the top

Exactly. Its just like building fly-over when the people at the location crave for power

You said before country can grow
1. Education the populace (school)
2. Health care system (hospital)
3. Security.

Do these 3 things not fall in the purview of infrastructure?

This was about a debate and not defence of anybody. But somehow many of you south westerners are just so razz. Insults are your mother tongue. Quality education is not justbabout school building ! Quality health care is not just about hospital building! Asọ rock budgets billions every year for the clinic in it and yet has nothing to show for it and other government owned hospitals. Ignorant people like you are the reason why Nairaland has lost it. I asked you to tell me what those ships that bring finished product into Nigeria take back to Europe and Asia and you are here dropping article for me, I presume you are probably still a student.

Tell me what they export back to Asia and Europe, in what quantity, come on I am waiting.

Go to the docks if you need more information.

Or better still go to school if you need to learn more about import and export trading.

Abuja-Kaduna rail is a capital project that is supposed to recoup its funding over a long period of time. FG only subsidizes the costs to enable citizens afford the costs more.
It is preposterous to condemn a functioning project just because it was temporarily hit by insecurity challenges. When it fully resumes, it would further boost efficiency and productivity. Trains have been a Target of terrorist attacks in countries as France, Belgium, UK, etc.. it is just a temporary set back.
if we had Lagos - Calabar rail, would you imagine how massive it would boost the economy.
Infrastructure is the most important priority in every world economy. No manufacturer can build without infrastructures.
Government subsidizes fertilizer to Farmers, also subsidizes manufacturers with importation of heavy factory machineries. Without Infrastructures there can't be production.
Electricity is an infrastructure, without which production is useless.
Refinery is an infrastructure without which you can't refine hydrocarbons.
Pls, stop embarrassing your family because you want to blindly defend a fraud that knows nothing about economics. You're a waste of space.

So you're saying a white elephant project that cost the federal government N1.7 billion ($4.7 million) to construct each kilometre of the186km Abuja-Kaduna rail and is being used by less than 1% of Nigerians will some day in the future start benefiting Nigerian economy? Are you not being fooled now sir?

The worst is the tickets are even subsidized hehe. So when the subsidy is removed what happens? Tickets bcom super-expensive and people go japa, train go ground and billions of dollars wasted hehe.

Yes, you have been fooled. Pls before u leave this earth, try and justify the education you have spent time and money acquiring.

You don't have to live in Lekki, Lekki free trade zone is a project that will trickle down to the rural areas. When operations fully begins, the imported goods through the seaport would get to you. The petrol from Dangote refinery would get to your mother in the village.

Moreover, as a personal accountant to Tinubu, if you have a proof how much Tinubu generates from Lekki, pls show us.

Well sha I don't blame Fashola, for all we know he might not have a business that employs up to to 100-200 people.

The refinery was built with a long term plan to be mega. That plan was halted as soon as fuel subsidy was introduce by successive government

The growth of an economy is not necessarily measured by how many people can feed now but the Infrastructures you build now for tomorrow. Infrastructures like:

Airports
Akk gas pipeline
Siemens Electricity
Railways
Broadband connectivity and
Roads

These are the things that drive development not how we share money or the number of people that are able to eat now.

Bro let's discuss on this topic...

How on Earth will u say building infrastructure is the main way of driving economy.... Yes infray drives economy but it's a policy undertaken by economics when there is a down turn in economic growth.. this is . In period of recession...

But in an ideal moment if a president is aiming to ginger an economy.. it's best to encourage massive investment, be it foreign or local... And. Off all the types of investment that has been proven to help economic growth... Production has. Been the. Most viable.. because in production.. the GDO and. gNP of a Nation grows.. employment rate. Grows.. national income grows, trade deficit is reduced, exchange rate appreciate and international respect and export grows... So in which way is insfrastrure as a means of driving the economy now surerer than investment I. E production...?

Explain sir... I am waiting... And plz don't chicken out

So in what way will the FG bring about your production investment. By building industries or by giving loan to business man to produce? How does the govt boost production?
Do u know why Nigeria cannot compete against the asian countries esp china when it comes to production and export. Why are Nigerian industries not competitive?
The answer is the price differential. If your final product cannot match what's coming from asia, nobody will touch it.
To achieve this u need a strong value added chain sector- from primary product to final product. The supply chain must be quick, efficient and cheap. Importing component and assembling into final product is waste of time. That's not industrialisation.
2. U need infrastructure esp Power. Electricity and transport must be damn cheap and the cost shouldn't be factored into the final product.
3. Good economic and fiscal policy to encourage home grown entrepreneurs and attract foreign investment.
U guys are joking when u say we don't need foreign investors. In fact, u need them more than anything. They will bring in their technology and ensure accessibility to foreign markets.
4. Invest in human capital. Promote good technical education and ensure a healthy and well motivated work force.
5. Security! Security!! Security!!!
6. More and more infrastructure. In power, mining, transport, ports, ware houses, supply chain, logistics etc
Finally Nigeria really needs to leverage on its advantage which is the petrochemical industry. Massive investment in that sector will be a game changer and the real fuel needed to fire up our industrialisation agenda. Most raw materials needed to feed industries come from petrochemical refining.

We really need sound technocrats to educate people on why our economy isn't productive. Buhari really messed up this country that people don't even have an idea what good governance is all about.
OBIDIENT CREW SHOULD STOP BLINDLY CONDEMNING ECONOMIC POLICY SIMPLY because ITS NOT FROM OBI'S MOUTH.
That was how they were foaming in that credit system thread.
I'm yet to see the full detail of Obi's economic blueprint. Something Obidient crew should be doing instead oplansnsticisplanssother peoples plan.

You don't even understand what an elephant project means, you just throwing words around like a dummy. For your information, Rail projects is the mordern reformation in Nigeria. All the six geopolitical region would be connected to each other, from the urban to the rural areas. If you don't like it, you can run to Somalia.
There's nothing wrong in FG subsidizing train tickets to begin with. In developed countries, Government subsidizes big tech & Auto companies. There's also a reason producers give discount on their goods to make it cheaper for the customers. Subsidy is an interventionist policy that Government employ in certain situations. Unfortunately, Aba- made Education is inferior to understanding the fundamentals.

but Obi deliver 75b when he was so clueless on what to use it for... but Fashola was able to borrow money for development that we are enjoying and witnessing in Lagos...
Yes you may be right!!
One thing I like Obi is that he is prudent in spending. Obi constructed roads down to all rural areas in the State. He didn't borrow. Obi cleared all arrears, paid all pensions and gratuities including those owed by his predecessors, Obi turned Anambra to a manufacturing hub, he helped institute about 6 different manufacturing companies in the State including the popular Inoson Motors. Obi paid all elderly citizens of the State who are not even entitled to pension, for full 8 years of his tenure. Obi constructed numerous schools, health centres, school of nursing, equipped major hospitals. Launched heart centre. Obi paid all 1st class University graduate of Anambra citizens one million Naira back then which was a huge some. His government sponsored many of them to further their studies abroad. These are just a percentage of his Goodwill. I just want to highlight these to you that this man is a good man.
Obi doesn't take decision into his hands, he always call on people's assembly. They tell him what they want him to do with their public fund and he does it. The 75 billion naira you mentioned wasn't actually there initially it was as a result of a little percentage he invested which turned out that huge return when he was about leaving office.
Obi sponsored SME's and brokered deals for small businesses in Anambra State.

Obi cleared ASUU subventures which was quite capital intensive that today Anambra State University is the only University not undergoing ASUU strike, ready to churn out fresh set of graduates in the next few months. Like I said his projects were fundamental. Give him time, he will turn this country for good.

Why hasn't it been felt by ordinary Nigerians, the gains of the infrastructure, in regards to the economy..
Majority of the infrastructure this APC has put up is based on loans, most of that infrastructure has been rendered useless by insecurity, it was on that premise Peter Obi made his statement.
If the infrastructure APC is putting up isn't based on loans, and no insecurity, we will all hail them.

The point Obi made is, very valid.
infrastructure that is ten time over priced? APC is a disaster that should br thrown to the dustbin of history.

DO YOU KNOW
that NNPC refineries (Warri, Kaduna etc) is there receiving trillions of naira and producing NOTHING.

Yeah money are budgeted for the maintenance of the refinery for maintenance even though they are not producing anything but I want you to think if this refinery were working and producing up to their capacity which is +/- 450000 bpsd and our total consumption per day is +/- 593,000bpd now imagine if they are working, there wouldn't be need for subsidy which is what is tearing Nigeria pocket
2) The price of petroleum products would be controlled by market forces meaning if the price of crude falls, the price of petroleum products too would fall.
3) More jobs would be created and the money saved from subsidy would be used for other things.

sometime Last year or 2019, Govt spent over $3bn on ajaokuta steel, nothing is showing.
I don't know much about the steel plant but you imagine we had a functional steel plant the likes of pro- force and Innoson
and other manufacturers wouldn't need to look for dollars to import steel which would also have an effect on the prices of their cars

Fashola is minister of power for 7yrs, huge amount of money has been spent in that period on power, but generator is still a must have gadget for any home in the country.

Fashola portfolio was reduced from Power/works and housing to only works and housing since after the 2019 elections and the person who replaced him was sacked this year. To be honest I had hopes on Fashola has minister of power but I also realized that na watin FEC approve minister go do remember Ameichi complains.

Many state airports are constructed with trillions, yet very few are functional and maybe Abuja, Lagos Kano are the ones generating anything significant( others are there receiving renovation money every two years just to have a runway).

Yes because most of those governor's built them for campaign purposes and yeah they would be needed later. I also think it would be because they don't have other infrastructure to compliment it. A state like Anambra if it had a functional sea port to compliment the airport.

We can't afford to borrow money and spend on things that will not help many people.
The ones we spend on, we must be ready to keep it working for the country.

Borrowing is not bad in as much you use the money right and judiciously.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT is very essential.

Yeah it is important but the without the needed infrastructure, it would be useless

We build so many universities that are poorly funded with few structures and lowly ranked in the world.

When you sale that same refinery to competent private hands, it comes to life.

Former NNPC fertilizer and petrochemicals ph was junk until it was sold to Indorama (Indian company).

Today now it is one of the biggest supplier of fertilizer in Africa..infact it even erected a new facility that led to recruitment as of 2019.

With good government policies, Infrastructure is as useless as p in psychology.
That is why I said many of you don't know the problem of this country, Obasanjo sold these refinary to private investor some years back but who are the people that criticize him an when he left Yaradua have to collect it back an this is where we are today. So the problem of this country is very deep than just a mere economic analysis.

Those ministers you are praising did not develop the economy. The best way to have a stable economy is to build infrastructures:

Electricity
Road Infrastructure
Broadband connectivity
AkK Gas pipeline
Provision of Health Systems

If Obasanjo and Jonathan's Government had focussed on all these, we would not be here today. These are more important things than how much rice cost in the market in 2010.
