I don’t think so. Just that the society has been structured to “favor” the married, hereby keeping them in check by the government and society. I hope you understand.

You can have a life partner without getting married, some people just enjoy having their own space and freedom to themselves, and some just want to only have kids and then raise them alone without a partner.

So no, marriage is not compulsory.

Marriage is just like obtaining a degree, it comes with this kind of veneration in the society.

Marriage is very not compulsory but society has made us think we must marry.

Marriage is essential if one wants to responsibly reproduce but even reproduction is not essential.

There are however other benefits of marriage that one would not reap if one were single. Marriage here being, committing to one partner

You'd have a partner for starts, a person you can join with to traverse through life and build something together.

You'd have someone to share intimacy with and test your ideas and plans with before attempting to bring them together into fruition.

If you live in a cold country, you'd have a stable bed warmer whom you too can warm bed for.

Of course, a single person can chop and change partners to get some of these benefits. But there's nothing better than committing to someone who commits to you with you both knowing it's for the long term.

If one must marry, I'd suggest one do the work to be marriable, for that is how one would find a suitable person who would want to commit to one. Because if you bring nothing to the table you'd likely end up with a person who has nothing to bring to the table, and your table would remain empty or contain even less than the empty you'd have if you remained single since both of you would be feeding off an empty table.

Subjectively it might not be compulsory but the social construct have made it so.

You only know the benefits of marriage at old age when you can no longer help yourself

Your wife and children will be there, if you ever showed them love while active in your hay days and years

Your spouse can die before you and the children will definitely leave the house to go be on their own. Now, you are all by yourself. The most important thing is to build solid connections and relationships with people and also be financially okay in old age.
