This is a good development!
If the deadline for scrapping the old notes falls in the time of election, politicians who have stashed cash in different warehouses to bribe voters may not easily get cash.
I believe a policy will be in place for whoever is changing so much notes to be refused or profiled.
This also happened in Kenya just before the last election.
This could be an attempt to discourage vote buying during election period.
I see it as another attempt to discourage ransom payment with the digitization policy.

Redesigning Naira cannot help the problem at hand because they are many way to safe or hoard money now (even cryptocurrency).

What will benefit everyone and help the value of naira now is to shrink it.

We still have to commend them for this..

You won't know some people pile up cash at home or else where except bank.

This is a chess game targeted at them majorly politicians and BDC guys as election is coming closer.

My issue is when they don't put sanctions or deadline on time.

CBN is not in charge of economic policy.

Monetary policy, yes, but only as a reaction to what Buhari and his finance and planning folk do....and what the oyel price says.

Plus, we don't change our currency that frequently. The last change we had was in 2013, and even then for the N100 note.

I hope you are not suggesting that anyone asked CBN to change the currency. Because everything related to currency is the CBN and its printing affiliate the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting.

Billions have passed away by now... The new president will suffer. Nigerians will hate the incoming president after one year in office. They will think he has collapsed Nigeria.

Well, if they want to change currency, they are free to do so...it does not bother me one bit.(I have lived through several changes...)

But if we want a better value for the naira, we have to do things that are way beyond the remit of the CBN governor.

They will actually save money because not all the currency in circulation will be exchanged and they can have a tighter control of the Naira In circulation to help stem inflation .

They better print this new one with one colour. So that money for colors in the old one will be used to solve other problems.

This is distressing to those who have stashed up large amounts in cash as they will be faced with the trouble of replacing the cash.

CBN and thieves playing chess
So who wants to stash cash will be using Naira? That’s a very dull move, stash your money in Dollars even if they bring new notes the old one will be circulated for period of time before they finally scrap it

Why?

According to him, bulk of the currencies are outside the bank. i.e people are keeping billions of money at home rather than in the bank, which in turn is making it hard to financial flows in the country and hence affecting economic activities.

Also when money isn't circulating because some people are keeping billions of cash in their apartments, it makes it hard for the CBN to know precisely how much of the currencies is in supply. And this makes it hard to them to make economic decisions.
