Okpanam is an Igbo town on the outskirts of Asaba, capital of Delta State. Years ago, the indigenes erected a statue in memory of Chukwuma Nzeogwu, their famous son who led Nigeria's first coup

People of Okpanam still believe that Nzeogwu led more than a coup, they believe he led a revolution

So Nzeogwu is not from Anambra state or SE?
I learned that he was brought up in Kaduna.

I guess their sin here is that they are the first to execute coup because, there were records of other coups that happened thereafter, even after the civil war.
Why are other perpetrators not been vilified too, some have been rewarded with presidential seat even?

The earlier the masses understand the Divide-and-rule system being used to weaken the supposed be one voice, the, they will cease to be manipulated by the common enemies, the politicians. Every four years, they hire an individual to defend them and sell them to the people. Imagine APC that has left every Nigerian trying to japa is promising to be the hope of Nigerians. And people are coming out to campaign for them. Let the Presidential candidate and his Vice organise a town hall meeting with the youths as Mr Peter Obi has been doing. Let the people ask them the fundamental questions. Imagine with the evidence of Shettima hands in Boko Haram, terrorism, they are pushing him to become the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. GOD FORBID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coup d'etat is a very delicate venture ,that if not managed professionally can lead to great disorder.

It was the first coup , bcuz prior to it ,coups weren't popular in africa .
They had no book to gain experience from.
They acted on a mix of impulse + patriotism.

Shedding of blood can never be justified.

BUT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESTRICTED TO THE LEADERS ,Military,TRADITIONAL RULERS AND THEIR ASSOCIATES. Killing of civilians by the jihadist and their sympathisers is unforgivable

Who the police arrested as suspect is different from who was later prosecuted, convicted and jailed for the crime.
Till date nobody has been prosecuted, convicted and jailed for the crime and all hands will still point at Tinubu and his cronies.

When I look at Moh247, Vulture griller, and their ilks, I begin to wonder if the market they go to is really in a town hall, different, from our own bladalu hulablu. . . gringringrin

We really need to ask them. . .cos how person go buy rice 8k in 2015, only to buy same btw 40 - 50k as the case maybe! Na fuel own Now it's almost 300 at the least from 165P/L in 2015. Abi na FX wey get both official and black market rate

You really need to have been given a kingdom and fresh maidens plus like 4 Rolls Royce to support APC.

Finally, their children are "Young StateMen" . . . .while these urchins wey dey run amock here na *Jagaban Army* . . . lolz . . . God abeg ooo gringringrin

Atleast they can encourage their Children to toe the path this man toed.

This is very good and it reveals the values of the people and their land.

Congratulations to them.

NB: If you want to engage their Children just remember this Statue, the actions of this man and all the 'good' it has caused and let that inform your decision.

That town should be razed to ashes. It truncated the Nigeria of our dreams. The statue makes everyone there an accomplice. An evidence of why we must not vote anything from that region ever

The same people saying there are no Igbos in SS will say Nzeogwu, who was from present day Delta State, carried out an "Igbo" coup.

You cannot approbate and reprobate at the same time!

When the narrative is good, its Niger delta not Igbo speaking area, but if its a negative news the narrative will read as 'Igbo town in delta state.'
If oil is found in Igbo speaking area its becomes Niger Delta area, if its a coup its becomes Igbo speaking area of Delta state

Good for him. He tried to install communism into our country and killed for it, which was wrong. But seeing the leaders we have today, can I blame anyone for deciding to kill them. Nigerians today are cowards, not like they were in the past. They've been perfectly bred to be slaves

Yes, a revolution that culminated in the mass slaughter of millions of Igbos in a needless war.

gidgiddy:

His coup is not what started the war, his coup happened 18 months before the war started

What caused the war was Gowon's refusal to honour the Aburi agreement he signed

Akuko. Why do you Igbos love self-deceit for goodness sake If Nzeogwu coup had not happened, there would have been no counter coup which was in response to the Nzeogwu coup and targeted majorly at Igbo officers, Aguiyi Ironsi, and Igbo civilians all across Nigeria by officers of Northern extraction. Only a disingenuous person would say what you just said coz it's obvious to the blind that the counter coup was the major precursor to the Civil war due to its macabre slaughter of Igbos in Northern Nigeria as a direct reprisal against the sectional killing of Northern leaders by Nzeogwu and his boys. There would've been nothing like Aburi accord without those preceding events. Endeavor to tell yourself the truth once in a while.

They know that their fellow yorubas Ademoyega, Fola Oyewole, Ganiyu Adeleke were actively involved in the coup as documented in Ademoyega's book- Why we struck'. cheesy

No matter how we yoruba Muslims try to hide those facts for propaganda sake, internet has come to stay. grin
