The remaining 1k is a defeceit owe by you, normally you do not have any money on you before you borrowed 100k and it is a rule in mathematics plus * minus is minus. Alternatively, the remaining 1k is still part of the money owed.

its a very easy math trick... the "imaginary" missing 1K is in the price of the laptop. 97K (price of laptop) +1k (that you hold) is 98K (add the 2k you gave them already, thats 100K)...there is NO MISSING 1K

you’re owing a debt of 100k and every money you pay to your debtor is for the purpose of reducing your debt to 0 and not to increase it so you should be counting 100k -(minus) your 2k shared evenly =98k dept remaining ( every amount you add should reduce and not increase your dept).
Now a plus at this point means you’re getting an additional 1k from them (your mum and dad) maybe 500 each.
But other than that…when you add the 1k kept for yourself we’re supposed to expect a dept of 97k remaining and not adding (to make 99k and there’s the twist) when you’re not paying yourself.

In summary (adding your 1k should make it 97k and not 99k)

The error in the math arises from assuming that the total amount owed to the parents is equal to the total cost of the laptop. However, this assumption is incorrect since the borrowed amount was only a part of the cost of the laptop.

Here's the correct calculation:

The laptop cost 97,000.
You borrowed 50,000 from your dad and 50,000 from your mum, which totals 100,000.
You used 97,000 to buy the laptop and kept 3,000.
You returned 1,000 to your dad and 1,000 to your mum, which means you still owe each of them 49,000.
The 3,000 you kept for yourself plus the 2,000 you returned to your parents equals 5,000, not 1,000.
Therefore, the missing 1,000 is not actually missing, as the initial assumption was based on an incorrect calculation. The correct amount of money left is 5,000, which is the sum of the money you kept and the money you returned to your parents.

The missing 1k is from the price of the laptop which is 97 but then you calculate the both parents 49+49 to be 98

That is the missing 1k

You borrowed 50k from each of your parents which is 100k combined.

But you returned 1k back to both of them which means you are only borrowing 49k from each parent which is 98k combined.

You bought laptop of 97k out of the 98k and held 1k to yourselve.

There's no missing 1k!!
You see where they wrote “+1k kept”? That’s the twist!!! It makes you forget that you're trying to reduce your debt by giving them (your parents) money and not adding to your debt by giving them money!
{Assuming you take back your 2k from them your debt goes back to 100k.}
So at 98k debt if you say +1k kept and expect to add it to make your debt rise to 99k then they probably borrowed you an extra 1k at some point or you're expected to pay back with 1k as interest.
Cos +1k kept should mean 98k-1k=97k and not 98+1k=99k!
If you're trying to get an answer like this “=100k” then what you have to do is take back your 2k

Let assume you didn"t hold 1k to your self
Now 49+49=98
You bought the laptop for 97k
The missing 1k is that one you reserve for yourself because you don"t have any money on you, why keeping 1k?

that 1k is from the change he got from buying the laptop which is 3k and he gave them (parents) back 2k from it which left him with the 1k. Cos he got 100k from the parents and bought the laptop for 97k.
Before giving them back 2k out of the 3k change, he owes them 100k so on giving them 2k his debt reduced to 98k and he kept 1k for himself but later gave it to them which should make his debt come down to 97k and not 99k.
Except +1k means they're giving him an extra 1k which would make total money borrowed to be 101k

stop mixing everything... the dude owes 97k and has 3k change.... if he gives his parents 2k then he now only owes them 98K (which is 97k the price of laptop + 1k he has left) there is NO missing 1k

agreed there's no missing 1k.
But in your words “ the dude owes 97k and has 3k change.... ” I do not agree with that one cos he owes 100k while having 3k change.
Then pays 2k “out of the change” leaving him with 1k...now at this point his debt is reduced to 98k.
Now the passage says “+1k kept” which I believe is referring to the 1k he still has from the change then his debt should reduce to 97k and not 99k this is where I think the mind twist is🤷🏾‍♂️

ok i guess our English is different while saying the same thing... he owes 97K for the laptop + 1K in his pocket = 98K... since he already repaid 2k to his parents, thats 100K

#1 the only person he owed something was his parents and that was the 100k he borrowed then bought the laptop from someone else so how does he owe 97k “for laptop”?
#2 the 1k in his pocket was originally 3k change he got from buying the laptop.
It became 1k after he paid 2k as part of 100k debt back to his parents which is how we came about 98k debt remaining.
#3 if we're trying to bring “100k” back into the conversation then he has to take back the 2k aleardy paid off his debt to make it 98k then his debt will go back to 100k.
My point is at this point where debt is 98k of 100k initially... if he adds the 1k left with him it means his debt has to reduce from 98k to 97k.
The question of +1k left=“99k” is there to twist peoples minds.
It should be “giving his mom and dad 1k each from his 3k change reduced his debt from 100k to 98k leaving him with 1k. Then he adds (pays) the same 1k to his “debtors” (his parents) which should further reduce his debt from 98k to 97k...there’s nothing like 99k! It's just there to boggle the mind.
Also there's nothing like “missing 1k”.
