Soldiers torture 12 LASTMA officers for arresting army chief

Soldiers, last weekend, reportedly went on rampage, beating Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, officials along Costain-Apapa area of the state for daring to impound a senior officer’s vehicle because he drove against traffic — “One way.”

The senior military personnel was stopped and his official vehicle impounded over traffic contravention around Costain.

It was learned that the military officer, who felt slighted by the manner the LASTMA officers accosted him, left the scene and, few minutes after, some soldiers appeared and went after every LASTMA officer on sight.

The soldiers reportedly pounced on the officials, took them to their barracks, beat them before letting them go.

It was gathered that the battered LASTMA officials were subsequently taken to hospital for the injury sustained during the ordeal.

Calm was later restored between both parties after apologies were tendered.

The State Coordinator, Special Traffic Management Committee on Apapa gridlock, Hassan Adekoya, who confirmed the incident, said the issue had been amicably resolved following intervention by relevant authorities.

“Everything is fine now and our men are undergoing treatment at a hospital. Both parties have apologised to each other and there is no cause for alarm. The situation is under control,” he said.

Adekoya recounted; “Yes, our men were assaulted and beaten. Some military men arrested 12 LASTMA officers at the weekend while on duty and beat them.

“Last Friday, around 5p.m., they started raiding our officers on duty at Costain Roundabout to Sifax down to Total Bridge, Apapa. They picked up the most senior officer, called Bravo at Areas “B” Oriyomi.

“The invading soldiers claimed that one of their bosses was arrested in the morning for taking one way.

“So they went after any LASTMA officer in sight, all the way from Costain to Apapa. At the end of the rampage, 12 officers were picked at the different locations.

“The officers include Balogun Sadiq, Ayoade Abideen, Adebayo Tunde, Kazeem Abensin, Rafiu Rasaki, Oloyede and Logunleko Oriyomi.

Lagos govt kicks

State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, while reacting to incessant assaults of LASTMA personnel, objected to the rate at which military personnel, police officers and others contravene the state traffic laws with impunity.

He noted that “the law is no respecter of anybody and must be obeyed at all time.”

Oladeinde, in a statement, added that the state government wondered why officers, who should be custodian of the traffic laws, work against it, stating that the government had resolved not to allow the menace continue unchecked.

While urging all security agencies to show exemplary conduct by leading the way in obeying the traffic laws of the state, Oladeinde warned that “any form of physical assault of the state traffic law enforcement officers by the erring security personnel will no longer be tolerated.”

Even though the military personnel were wrong, I'm somehow not bothered considering the rate at which LASTMA officials themselves do assaults commercial drivers and private car owners (esp young guys, they tag every young person a yahoo boy). They work in conjunction with policemen and touts to maltreat any of their prey... LASTMA wey go commit one-way signpost for road so that a newbie that pass the same road will fall prey to their trap... Gat no pity for them o...

But wait o, the LASTMA official forget say him still dey Africa? As in Nigeria precisely.What on earth will make him arrest an army officer when him know say him no get back up

It is very wrong to drive against the traffic. It is a norm within security personnel and very irresponsible. When the same ogas sit in long traffic outside Nigeria, they remain quiet and never complain. They return home and wear their garments of irresponsibility.

However as for LASTMA make dem take the beating hold body.

We have uncountable cases of Lagosians either killed or made permanently disabled by LASTMA officials in Lagos.

Nigeria can never be great because of people like you. The army are shameless people they should go and pick up Boko haram if they have balls. However, can you see the kind of training they are getting from a top officer, the officer should be ashamed of been caught but instead he is assaulting government workers. They cannot do that in the North I know I lived there, they can't touch ordinary Yanbanger they only come down south to flunt guns that's the only thing that makes them powerful take that out ordinary university students can deal with them.

Let me remind these soldiers that there is one way to Sambisa forest with no restrictions not in Lagos.

These are signs that our soldiers are still not well trained in combat and not aware of their functions in the communities.
They are to serve and protect if they don't know that. For almost 60 years the military still don't know what their duties are is shameful.
This Nigerian military has no respect for her citizens then what do we have them for.
Look at the killings in Benue and Kaduna no intelligence gathering and no protection for those people and no prosecution so what are we talking about.

You reap what you sow. Lastma officers don't treat motorists with respect. Since they knew he was an army chief they should have obtained his identity, some video evidences and charge him to court. Most law enforcement agents are reckless and unreasonable.
