The salary is 400k, the total budget is 556k, the homeoffice is what provides the extra... 10k electricity is a whole month light oo... my neighbour does 15k sef, had to ask because i thought i was being cheated.. the 50k is for 2hrs or less light...20ltrs/week..(3ltrs/day).. the car fuel is based on the new price.. fill up cost 36k/5-6days for 9-5 work to earn the 400k/mth..

Where am i getting it wrong ?
You can make big adjustment with the big expenses. 60,000 on electricity, can you explore solar panels? Make phcn a back up if possible. Until your side gig(s) improves, when your rent expires, you may downsize by at least 25%. Cut social gathering at least 25%. Get a reliable and honest mechanic to reduce car service cost. Car pool occassionally with work colleague if possible. Increase the budget for your health to at least 10,000 monthly depending on your age. Eat out less and avoid junk foods. Learn how to cook if you cant cook and ensure you cook when necessary to reduce cost of feeding by at least 25%.

Nazgul:

Kindly redo that budget.

1.3m for a 2bedroom apartment on a salary of 400k per month is on the high side. You need to work on your rent. Get an agent on the mainland. I'm sure he'll you'll get decent 2bedroom flats (or one bedroom flat) which would definitely be way cheaper than your current place.

From your post, you work from home. So why would you need to use the car for 5-6 days. If you're using a 4 cylinder engine and you fill your tank, it should last you for up to 2 weeks (or more) provided you're not a Waka Waka person.

If you work from home, I'll suggest you get a laptop with very strong battery, that way you can still remain online for hours after power outage. Also, get a rechargeable standing fan. The one I bought lasts up to 7hours when fully charged. This would help you at night so you can preserve your fuel and won't have to put on the gen if the weather gets hot. That way your gen would only be put on when you want to work and have low battery. With the new fuel price, one has to adjust in order to survive.

If you like cooking, I'll advise you to stock your kitchen with provisions. Yam, rice, beans, noodles, beverages...etc. The cost of procuring these stuffs would be high no doubt, but for the next few months, you won't have to buy anything. Meaning you'll have lots of money to save.

Close eye and get a washing machine. So that this 4k per month can be channeled to something else.

Gift to people kwa, for this renewed shege era. Biko strike that away from your budget.

You put auto maintenance at 30k, health 5k and hygiene 10k. Which other repairs and maintenance is this one again?

After budgeting 62k for feeding for the month, which one is outings and sit outs again?

How can your budget be more than your income? 🙄

You'll have to cut your coat according to the cloth. You can skip breakfast, eat a light lunch and have swallow for dinner. Everything shouldn't be more than 1k. Meaning you'll be saving 1k. That's something if you ask me.

Unless your car is Nigerian used, running these checks and changes every month isn't necessary and a complete waste of money. I changed my break pad September last year and this is May, I'm still using it. Same with shock, Tyre...etc. As long as you bought a decent car, it won't be swallowing up your money every now and then.

If you're using your gen for 2hours or less per day, 20 liters should last you more than a month. Most especially if you're in an area where power supply is decent.

It's simple, wear clothes you can afford, eat foods you can afford, date people within your range, don't go broke and in debt trying to impress anyone...Live within your means.
The boy no serious no waste your precious time...

Lol, I don't know what outing, sit out and restaurant is still doing on your list. You are not ready yet.

Clothing and foot wear shouldn't be a monthly expense for now, why not quarterly instead?

Repairs and maintenance of what? Your car or household items?

Your feeding cost alone is making me raise my eyebrows, do you eat out?
It's unrealistic that he spends that amount on food and pays the other amount for rent.
He even has more money for partying than for his own health.
These inconsistencies make me doubt the legitimacy of this scenario

In your haste to respond, you did not read to comprehend.

The guy said large family; I do not know where a wife with two kids became a large family.

Secondly, how do you know that our take home is currently not N2m per month?

Or do you have access to my family's purse?

Re: Help Me With Budgeting.... My 400k Salary No Longer Takes Me Home. by stevestifler(m): 4:45pm On Jun 01, 2023
your rent should not be more than 2 months salary (700k - 800k).
As a single guy, stay in a room. If you are engaged and planning to marry, get a room and parlour. You dont need two bedroom unless you have kids. if you must rent a room and parlour, then it is because you need to carve out a side of the parlour/room as workstation/office

you cant use 36k (72liters) fuel per week in lagos. you'd have to drive 70km daily to and fro to exhaust that much. unless you use a V6 or V8. I drive 35km to work and 35km back and i use 8k fuel weekly (i live outside lagos tho)

you are supposed to change oil every 6-7,000km unless you buy tyres per month or MUST spend 30k monthly. otherwise, that money should be one-off, not recurring.

Limit your gen usage to a a couple of hours per day and mostly use it for weekends. Do everything with normal electricity while there is light.

Outing, family house contribution and eating outside should stop. Since you are mobile, take food in a flask to work from home. Dont buy clothes or shoes monthly!!

Most importantly, save at least 100k monthly from your salary.

What you are doing wrong is that you voted Buhari, then again then didn’t vote at all this time. I know you will disagree. If you actually did vote APC then thunder should fire 🔥 you and that 400k.
If not, I will advice you start cutting down on some stuffs to save money.
Like I perceive some fat lies in these areas, fueling your car, auto maintenance, laundry, hygiene, clothing, maintenance. No way these could be true.
For instance, nobody buys cologne every month, nobody does car maintenance every month. I fill car tank once a week between 35 -40 dollars and I drive like 100 miles everyday to and fro work.
If you could cut down on this areas you will do well saving a lot to find one student visa to America where you will stop complaining . 😂

Dearie, some families don't earn up to what you are earning but they are living very fine.

It's all about cash management.

Cut your coat according to your size sir, don't live above your budget. Plan yourself very well. Adjust to the new change. Above all learn money management skills. The amount for your rent still amaze me.
Re: Help Me With Budgeting.... My 400k Salary No Longer Takes Me Home. by goldencomets: 5:09pm On Jun 01, 2023
Your rent should be between 500-700k max. Get a room self and setup your workspace inside. With 400k salary in Lagos, you have no business living in a 2bed apartment.

Cut down on your car expenses. You are chasing comfort too soon. Focus on growing your career/salary . Use public transport if possible.
If your car get serious fault na express way to debt.

When I was earning 300k I shared apartment with 2 of my friends for 2yrs, which helped me since we were splitting bills. My share of the annual rent was less than 350k.

Don’t live your life to impress any one. Las las dem go still laugh you if you no fit meet up.

Finally, SAVE!!!

Yeah, I guess so. I'm kind of getting averse to buying heavy electronics from online stores nowadays. Especially Jumia. They hike the price of everything as if there's no tomorrow. I'm pretty sure the price will be way cheaper in physical stores.
Lol...you're paying for the swaggs na. Besides the price includes delivery to your doorstep. So it's definitely going to be hiked.

Yea it would be way cheaper in physical stores, and you have the freedom to bargain and beat down price.

Fuel for car is at the new rate of N500/ltr, my car is a 70ltr car tank..

Auto maintenance is basic brake pads, shocks, service 2mths, tire guage, police pr, tire purchase if any, minor touch ups etc... nothing major.

Fuel for generator is 20ltr/day (2hrs or less daily)

I need help.... how are you people doing it, what am i doing wrong? The rat race is killing me..

Immediately I opened your post, I sighted your major problem... My Monthly Salary is N1,087,000 but my Annual rent is N550,000

How can you be paying 1.3m rent when your salary is 400k This shows you Live a luxury lifestyle above your income because a house of that amount will require luxury maintenance as well..

Also how can you be fueling your Car with 180k and be driving alone?, Often Pick passenger on your way to work or on your way back home, you will be surprised at what you will have at the end of the month.

In your haste to respond, you did not read to comprehend.

The guy said large family; I do not know where a wife with two kids became a large family.

Secondly, how do you know that our take home is currently not N2m per month?

Or do you have access to my family's purse?

Show me LARGE in the Guy's Statement....
Anyways, Have a Great Day...

The feeding, i have to even hide to eat N1,000/plate, i have even switched to egg and left the N1000 cowleg..

grin grin grin ... you almost kill me with this one! ... but this shows the root of the problem .... pride ... you must keep up the image ... perception of an upper class guy. Things are about to get more expensive... if you can't adapt now what will happen then? We can't tell you what to do except drop some stuff from the list to live within your means. You must know what is more important... as in why pay to iron clothes when it will more economical to buy an iron? Cooking is less expensive.... one time cooking can last you 2 days... healthier and you know e aptly what you're eating. When you eat out and call for 3 pieces of meat ... they say is chicken... but can you swear it's not vulture?

Stop hanging your hat where your hand can't reach.

Imagine what diverting that 500,000 Naira per annum to business would yield in ten years time if he chooses an apartment half that price.

He doesn't need more than a mini flat with such salary if he must stay on the Island.

Imagine what he's spending weekly on fuel.
Only someone who stays indoors all day should be close to spending that.

So it begs the question, why do you spend that much on running your car if you truly stay that much at home to spend such on your gen?
