Most of you don't know the difference between "tap" water and borehole water. "Tap" water as commonly called was purified water supplied by state water boards. Your typical borehole water is nothing near that water. "Tap" water was processed, clean, safe, drinkable water supplied through underground pipes to homes when Nigeria still had some dignity. Today that is gone.

Typhoid fever became widespread when most of these state water agencies began to fail, and most people began drinking water drilled in their backyards.

So oga, "tap" water and borehole water are not the same o.

Why does it have taste?
I am also guilty myself and it is because the tank is open. I don't know if it is because of the wire that runs into it or something else.

If wire runs into the tank, then it's a float switch fixed in the tank to automatically control the pumping machine's start and stop when there is low water level and filled water level.

But, I don't think that will be responsible for the change in taste.

And also, quoting an experienced plumber, he said the black tanks are better than the blue ones.

And from my experience, the process of black water tanks, (especially the ones produced by Roto Machines) are better than the ones by direct extrusion.

Lack of good maintenance practice e.g regular cleaning of the storage tank by the owner.

Secondly, recent boreholes are not drilled to the right dept. Once the driller find water during drilling stages, that's all. There are various dept and each dept has various waters and tastes.

Thirdly, the soil.

My 2cent.
tanks doesn't need to be cleaned unless you are pooping inside.

The most important is for the water going into the tank to be clean and treated.

I usually don't agree with the OP but as someone who came of age in the late 90s, I remember buying cold tap water in sellophane bags for 50 Kobo. It was so refreshing.

I drank well water too and when we would trek back from school, we would drink whatever tap water was available on the road and use tfare to buy bean pie. (Damn I'm getting old.)

The switch to sachet water has nerfed our immune systems. I tried it recently and fell ill. A whole me that used to drink well water. 😭😭😭😭

I didn't say the taste of our water is bad. I said the tank is uncovered and I wouldn't know if they didn't cover it because of the float switch. Thanks for reminding me of the name.

Because the pipes that bring the tap water go through a lot of 'rather disreputable areas' (I heard someone say the pipes go through gutters carrying sewage, among other things)....so it is better to boil and filter them.

If we want a better water system as seen abroad, we have to be ready to pay the kind of utility bills they pay abroad to get that.
