It depends on your definition of celebration.
If you mean throwing a party, then this is true.
However if by celebration you mean engaging in what makes you happy, then he was not so wise.

Celebrate being alive.
Celebrate being healthy.
Celebrate being sane. This generation is hard.
Celebrate the things money cannot buy that you have.
Celebrate the things money can buy that you have.
Celebrate being able to eat good food and good things.

Birthdays are quite significant.
From your narration of how you spent your britdhay, I can tell you that you spent it well. It only would have been better if you added passionate prayers to it.

Birthdays are meant to give us an introspective time.
It is a transition into a new chapter of your life. So spending it doing some self-examination as you described here was a good one.

Making a review of how you spent the last year and setting new goals should be the objective.
To learn from past mistakes and be determined to do better.
Celebrate the good choices made and augment where there's need for improvement.

In summary, living an intentional life is what should be the goal. But as with every thing in life- the power of choice is yours to make.
