modicum: On an internet forum i-e NAIRALAND where many Nigerians (at home and in the Diaspora) identify themselves more by their ethnic affiliations and where trading abuses, curses and hate-speech has become the usual fare, something dramatic happened last Sunday afternoon. The moment the match between Cote D’Voire and Nigeria ended with the Super Eagles coming out victorious against popular prediction, there was a ‘ceasefire’ with everybody suddenly becoming proud to be Nigerian.Segun Adeniyi of Thisday Newspaper
Na lie, what happened that day was that the igbo were shouting in joy "we know we can do it if left alone by bigots!" and the rest of the country (especially yoruba) were crying "it is better we lost than allow these igbo boys to dominate the team"

Billyonaire: It is not a taboo. It is because Nairaland by Moderator's and owners' design is almost largely welcoming to neophytes and Pessimistic 'Garri' and 'first to comment' retards. So much pessimism here is enough to make you think the world has crashed. Take a deep breath and know that Nairalanders opinions begin and end here.
But you are always on the front page chasing first comments and playing to the "like me" botton.

We are not against personality here! The coded words is ''PRINCIPLE OF GOVERNANCE'' , ''POLITICAL ACCOUNTABILITY'' , ''TO SERVE AGAINST BE SERVE!!!

Now coming to question of constitution, do you call what we presently operating undre a constitution??!! Nigeria constitution is a shamble(A GLORIFIED JUNGLE DOCTRINE/SYSTEM)... is the very reason why our politicians are and were getting away with all their misdeeds.... Do you seriously think that your governor will be able to pull a stunt like that a sane clime........?!
So, instead of pushing for the amendment of the constitution, you are flying off the handle to push Chime to do what is not entrenched in the laws of the land just because it suits your convenience?
Let me educate you about the dangers of doing what is not in the constitution, there will be chaos. Jungle justice will reign.

Do the right thing first, he who must come to equity must come with clean hands.

Riba_man: One of the characteristics of Democratic rule is openness with/to the Masses/electorate. In proper democracies, power ultimately resides with the voting public, not with the elected officials.
Please, try and reason out an issue before you comment on it
Another characteristic of democracy is freedom, the elected should not be forced to make public announcements especially where he feels the announcement will cause social tension or a breakdown of law and order.

World class hospital.
Thank you Rooneyboy, you see, I don't even think his travel for treatment has anything to do with standard of their local hospitals there. I know many states that bring high profile patients to enugu hospitals from around the country. The man reserves the right to choose where he should be treated, just like the rest of us, if he chose a native doctor at Okija shrine to cure him, how is it anybody's business?

SELFWORTH: Don't mind them. That is why the country is in shambles. The abnormal is deemed normal and some fools will still defend it.

They want Nigeria to change but many have no idea how to achieve this. Chime and his colleagues were irresponsible in the way they have dealt with the matter.

I have nothing but contempt for him and his colleagues who believe his position is an inheritance rather than a public serving role. God will remove all of them in due course. When God hears the cry of the innocent who cannot afford treatment abroad like these spoilt politicians, He will REMOVE the pharaohs of Nigeria.
The country is in shambles because you have unrealistic expectations borne out of inadequate information and will shoot with your mouth without thinking of what you are saying.
The conduct of Chime is right and except for faceless people like you, no other responsible person has said anything against him.

Awoofawo: You are seriously lacking in wisdom and grace to understand meaning of holding public office holders accountable for their action and inaction!

On the day they start making use of Nigeria medical facilities, start sending their children to Nigeria public schools, when they start experiencing what the ordinary citizens in the street go through. That day is when they will sit up and realize they are mean to serve the common interest and not their pockets. That day is when they will do the needful and free the massive from neo-slavery!
What section of the Nigerian constitution stipulates that any public officer is bound to his local schools or hospitals, or you just trying to punish this particular one? I think you are the one lacking in wisdom because you failed to agitate for your desired changes in the laws of the land. What you are doing here is mere wishful thinking.

Gangnam: smiley I agree he's an intellectual god alright. You have to be some sort of intellectual god to fabricate stories to mislead millions the way he has done it. grin grin grin
However, on a serious note, the main point I got from this article is that, Achebe is almost as culpable as Ojukwu for the waste of plenty of Igbo lives in the failed war. He was part of the inner caucus "yes men" Ojukwu surrounded himself with, as pointed out by the writer and Achebe himself. Their short-sighted and highly mono-coloured elitist world view led to the unnecessary death of many "common" people, Biafrans and Nigerians alike. That same parochial view is what he has translated into his delusional memoir to mislead many more and fan the embers of their failed ambition.
Since you agree he is a god over your literary life, OK, the rest of your points are wide off topic.

If he wasn't causing "social tension and endangering the peace of the state" why was the media houses agog with all kinds of rumours about his where about, with one even going as far as saying that he is "dead"?
Why was the opposition calling for his impeachement (on the grounds of improper hand over) if he was generating "social tension" by being silent?

Please, you guys should at least admit that he handled this particular incidence wrongly. No leader is ABOVE MISTAKE.
I like Gov Chime, but he messed up this one time.
The media houses are seeking their pay, the governor is working for his people. No apolgies to nobody.

Please go and read the governors statement again. He felt the "tiny growth" around his neck and that is the thyroid area in a human being.

Am tired of the populace defending STUPIDITY. What happens to releasing a statement about being ill and going on a break to seek for "proper" medical attention.
Why build up a lot of controversy about an illness and make all the news media houses agog with all kinds of rumours?
If they had provided adequate medical facilities in the country, will they need to run to abroad for every little thing?
The only controversy I see in all these, is the one you guys are creating online.
PoliticsRe: Governor Chime Was Treated For Cancer Abroad by 7842I: 8:13am On Feb 13, 2013
eagle,eye:
The above statement is the more reason he should have let the people know that he was ill. He is human and so can fall sick like any other person. By letting his people know that he is ill, he need not tell them the nature of his illness and what make s you think that he will be given an inhumane treatment?
Okay, now that he has finally opened up, what makes you think that he won't still be given an "inhumane " treatment in his "trying period"?
Nobody can give that guy an inhumane treatment after all he has done for them, that is why the whole state was calm about all these. C'mon, should this man suddenly cause tension in the polity by making fearful comments about his health which may even cause social tension and endanger the peace of the state? He went quietly, returned quietly and the state is better for it.

That state has standard hospitals, UNTH, Parklane and Niger Foundation with foreign doctors, go and check. And I find nothong wrong with a citizen who can pay for his medical bills to be forced to take treatment at home just because he is governor, where is his fundamental human rights?
And you, yes you, has anybody ever forced you to take treatment in any place you don't like? How did you feel afterwards?
