ZUBY77: that sounds like a huge opportunity for estate investors
Yes, but instead of some tenants to mass together and find ways to exploit the situation, they will be crying for the government to intervene. If the government intervenes things will get worse, and 800 thousand cannot rent you a flat anymore.

KenGali: This is beyond the topic, but stop spreading falsehood with a false claim of knowledge or keep quiet if you do not know. My Grandfather sold off a fleet of Austin Lorries before the war and put his money in the bank, His Passbook is still kept in pristine conditions. He received only 20 pounds for his balance. After the war he had to become a Driver for one of his employees!
Very painful, but the Igboman has shown they are unstoppable. We are proud of our position in Nigeria today.

ZUBY77: You are right about the semester thing, it is for one year. But since when did the cost of production in Enugu become higher than other SE states?

Isn't cement, rods, water, sand etc almost all the same all over the east?
It is a demand fuelled inflation on the houses, there is no vacancy so every new one is hotly contested, and the landlords are not building many more houses. This may continue for a very long time.
PoliticsRe: Enugu State And High Cost Of Living by 7842I: 11:03am On Mar 24, 2013
ZUBY77: Seun, where is that 'dislike' button ?

Enugu houses are very expensive for real. The worst is that they dont have much industries in the state to pay for it. My younger sister collects over 100k every semester for a one room apartment. It is too much for a student.
Your sister is chopping your money o! There is nowhere they charge N100k for a semester, its for a year for a self contained room.

You cannot say something is expensive till you factor in the cost of production, can you?

Madawaki01: Many igbos including ashebe ar stil bitter about how Awo deafeated them without firing a single shot himself, just leave them, let them continue their ranting about Awo...all we are asking is this..how did achebe contribute to d development of Nigeria...by sittin in a mansion at The US and pointin at how Nigeria is a failed state?he didn't even use his writin skills to fight he rather used it to promote hate.
REST IN PIECES ashebe
Achebe has a right to be bitter, bitter about Yoruba people who stopped Biafra and thus created this failed entity called Nigeria. He has been vindicated, we are left here to suffer for our failure to take the opportunity offered by Biafra to split from blood thirsty demons from the north, but we shall all suffer the consequences here.

Boko Haram is punishing us for not taking Ojukwu's opportunity in 1967grin

I heard they are massing around to attack Lagos? Good morning this evening Awolowo grin
PoliticsRe: Enugu State And High Cost Of Living by 7842I: 10:47am On Mar 24, 2013
Lazy tenants!

While you were there drinking alchohol and chasing women with your money the landlords toiled and sweated under the sun.

Those landlords bought those lands with their cash, paid "Ogbanecheagu" they built their own roads to the plots, built fence and built the house with millions of naira. They then bought electric poles, provided light for you, sank well or borehole and all these while the government did not help the landlords.

Why then do you think the government should now wake up and dictate to the landlords on how much they should collect from the tenants?

alj harem: one Naira, You sound like one of those that don't even bother to read before replying.

Now here are facts

1. Achebe is a well respected man whether anyone likes it or not. I respect the man's achievement (personal)

2. Achebe's works (writings) are great !

Here is the question

What is Achebe's impact to the life of an average Nigerian ? Did he AT ANY POINT fight or make any impact or even attempt to make the life of any average Nigeria or even Igboman better ? Or he just focused on his writing and his personal acheievement ?
He fought for the Igboman, fought for Nigerians, Africans and the whole world by using his best weaapon, his pen to liberate the minds of the masses and caused a revolt by making us more aware of who we are, thus supercharging our confidence and making us achieve personal victories in our fields.

Oh is that has achievement ? Shocked *
That was his achievement, what is yours?
PoliticsRe: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by 7842I: 10:21am On Mar 24, 2013
alj harem: ok how has this improve the life of any average man ?

This is not about Awolowo but if you must know. That NTA channel which is the first television station in Africa before likes of France had one started as WNTV from Awolowo.

Nigeria for many years had only NTA as the best channel station in Africa. That is an achievement to the life of any AVERAGE Nigerian.

Also since he gave free education to his Yoruba people, their are thousands of Ijaws and Igbos that benefited from it. The first school he built was in Urhoboland.

I am a private citizen and not know like Achebe because I know if I die, I might not get the honour Achebe is commanding out of ignorance.

If Achebe is to be respected, then we all should see his impact or am I talking out of ignorance here ?

The fundamental fact has not be stated here. The question has not be answered by the so called educated intelligent people
To answer you question, YES you are talking out of ignorance. If a man who has spent all his life writing world acclaimed books has not impacted your life in anyway, how is that anybodys fault?
PoliticsRe: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by 7842I: 10:17am On Mar 24, 2013
The trouble with Nigeria, is that we reject the truth. Not because its not the truth but because of the ethnicity of the messenger of truth. Achebe is a model of perfection, the world knows.
PoliticsRe: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by 7842I: 10:12am On Mar 24, 2013
alj harem: You see, this is one of the reasons I dislike discussing with the so called educated Nigerians. Majority or illiterates IMO, google or the internet had any answer, would I be asking the question.

No one in the world has any information on Achebe's impact to the average Nigerian and as such, I am asking those defending his honour to state it clearly without any insult or sarcasm, Achebe's impact to the average Nigerian or Igbo man on the street.

I loved the man and respect him even till this point because of his achievement but it does not erase the question.
Heheheheh grin. This guy is incurably funny, why avoiding my answers?
PoliticsRe: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by 7842I: 10:10am On Mar 24, 2013
alj harem: You would not be saying this if Achebe had won it

Why are you people so hypocritical ?

Moreover if Achebe knew that, why didn't asked them to drop out of the race last year ?
Oga, you dey wak comot from topic o!

alj harem: You see what I mean, you mentioned all these Awolowo did. NOW WAS ACHEBE THERE TO COMFIRM THIS FROM USA OR BAIFRA ??

Lets be realistic here and not swallow what every bigot throw at the table

IN fact that aside, what was his impact on the average Nigerian
I have answered you this question and you still keep asking again, Achebe, through his books and stance on some national issues developed the minds of millions of Africans, and made me propud when he rejected (with good reasons) OBJs national awards. Achebe stands too tall.
PoliticsRe: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by 7842I: 9:58am On Mar 24, 2013
alj harem: Lets be realistic here and not think using sentiment and petty tribalism. Soyinka is not the discussion here. The question is simple and it is not about Achebe's book/s

What did Achebe achieve for others before passing on ? I mean, what positive impact did he make ?
Achebe developed the minds of millions with his pen, and billons more yet unborn will still benefit from his wisdom.

crimo4us: . Nobel prize is the prize you get when you are the best in the world in a particular field of professionalism, Wole Soyinka got one and Achebe got none, both of them are literary icon.Wole Soyinka got the prize for literature not activism.Measure greateness in professionalism with achievement.
This topic has nothing to do with the great Wole Soyinka, or literary prices. Save that for another topic.

vivian chinaza: grin now even ladies are not left out in this tribal war.

Erm, I know you all will be thirsty by now so there is refreshment...... grin

Bowing my head to a great man, a fallen hero; my fallen hero. We don't need you to make the world proud, we don't need you to make our Yoruba brothers proud or any other people for that matter. You made us proud, you represented us and fought for what we believed in. I stand on the ground you stood. You were BIAFRAN, so am I.
I will not fight, neither will I shed blood to contest your greatness and integrity because a man's greatness precedes him. Yours precedes you. Anaghi ahucha uzo si muta oku. Ihe agbana n'aka ejighi onyo ele ya. And I know wherever you are right now you wouldn't want me to.

Onye nna ya dinyere ohi na eji ukwu agbaka ozo, and we nod in satisfaction. The rest doesn't matter.
Excellent writing, you must have read Things Fall Apart? grin

The only problem is that your knowledge will still be low till you emancipate your mind with the book.

olufunmibi: Well for me it just happened that I've never read any of Chinua Achebe's books, my elderly sibblings did, because it was the fad in their days, but history effectively told us that he is a great literary icon,he was a strategist during the biafran war, he received national honours and turned some down, and he wrote a book "there was a country" at age 81 or so which reignited generation old animosity, hatred, and disaffection between the Yorubas and the Igbos.the book is a time bomb, it has a potential to cause carnage and bloodshed in the future, if the wound of ethnic hatred remained festering and fungating. For me, I regret that that book was written in the twilight of his life, it has not helped national unity, it has made us hate ourselves more. I read with disgust what people, the Igbos, write on this forum about my Patriach,Obafemi Awolowo. Never mind. It is what it is. You, your children, your Grand children will spend Naira, that name Naira, our Collective Monetary Identity as Nigerian was coined by Obafemi Awolowo, and please always remember to collect your N100 Change, that is Awo in your pocket. It is what it is! Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife, best University in Nigeria, is Awo's Brainchild, he was the Chancellor, it is what it is. If you are great, You are Great, it is just what it is! By the way I commiserate with you my Igbo compatriots on your loss, may God keep raising great men and men who foster peace and not divison among you. And may you one day again have a great leader, who you can all rally around, who can be your guiding light and lead your race to the greatness you always aspire to, not just people writing books causing fight among children on the internet. Accept my condolences.
You caused more division with your post than the one existing before.
PoliticsRe: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by 7842I: 9:17am On Mar 24, 2013
Achebe was never a high ranking government official so cannot directly do anything to promote development in Nigeria. However he developed the minds of younger readers, exposed us to certain local realities that made physical development possible. Yes, Achebe developed this nation with his pen.

funkymama: WTF!!

Are you trying to compare murtala Mohammed with Achebe?

C'mon, don't be silly. The former stood for the unity of Nigeria. We cannot say the same for the latter.

And so bloody what if he schooled at U.I?

He is not the first, last or best graduate that university has produced.

There are universities in the east. You can choose one . undecided

or are you trying to say that there's no university in the east that's worthy to be named after Achebe? undecided

Shior !
Nobody can compare Achebe with ordinary Murtala, except for yoruba people who see the northerners as their masters.

vislabraye: So does it make it right? You want to justify adultery the same way people justify homosexuality.
I don't think you would take it as anything if someone nyashes your wife. In fact you've already prepared your mind for it. Good luck.
Adultry, infantry, fornication and every other sin has same punishment, why is everyone reacting to this one while committing others?

I think most people have only condemned the fact that she SAID IT IS OKAY. By the way, there is no guarantee she actually said this since it's just hearsay.
The fact that it happens should not stop people from standing for what is right. I doubt anyone is claiming holier than thou.
What is right for one might be wrong for another, remember that.
