Thanks Samantha - let me give it a go.

Ghana and Nigeria became independent a year from each other and regard themselves as siblings. Flight time is about 45 mins and there is much inter marriage. Many affluent and wealthy Nigerians married Ghanians between 1950-1970's. This ensured a lot of bonding between the two countries. Ghanian (wrong spelling - I know - stay with me) generally married Nigerian men in the upper to middle class. There might be a lot at the lower class, but I only know what I know.

Also Ghana's Nkrumah a pan Africanist provided a lot of inspiration to Nigerias early political thinkers. The idea of "Africa first, Africa together" guided Nigerias foreign for many years most especially its posture towards front line southern Africa states during the period of racist white rule. This thought extended to the West Indian islands. The thinking was that every black man from anywhere in the world had a right yo be in Nigeria. This could be because so many slaves were taken out of Nigeria - massive amounts. Blacks always have right of return type thinking.

As between siblings ( NG and GH) there was fierce rivalry for bragging rights in all areas especially sports. There were serious disagreements but it was mainly just banter settled over a drink - same as the jollof wars. An exception was the world cup match in the early 70's when the Ghanian team bus was burnt after Nigeria lost 2-3. That was exceptional.

Now unto the bad parts of our history. A lot of Ghanians plied their trade in Nigeria in the 60's and 70's. The Nigerian currency being oil backed was stronger. There were Ghanian teachers ( very good in math )carpenters, shoe makers etc. But in the early 80's the NPN government in Nigeria was mismanaged the economy with growing unemployment. Armed robbery and other social vices was on the rise. The Nigerian president ordered all undocumented Ghanians to leave the country. The infamous " Ghana must go" saga. This was a really poor period in the relationship.

Many years later Ghana retaliated and did the same thing. But strangely enough people were still interacting, marrying and doing business together among the middle class - so it was weird. We were both angry but not breaking up. Recently also some trades in Ghana adopted protective measures against Nigerian businesses- raising qualification requirements, excluding Nigerian businesses and so on.

Tensions rise but they also fall fast because the ties are too great. Really tight. But the rivalry is always there. Ghanians believe Nigerians are loud, impulsive and noisy neighbours. Nigerians believe that they are God's blessing to everyone and that Ghana is a small country that should be more grateful. But this is no more than soccer fans ribbing each other.

Nigeria does not have the same historical ties to SA. Travel time and visa requirements make this even more so. Language and culture are different. SA does not often meet our first team except at MNC levels. It's a shame because these two countries should be working together. But it is what it is. The situation is more adversarial. Nigerians believe that SA is politically where we were in the 80's shifting blame for bad economic management. Unfortunately social and cultural ties are insufficient to get us across this bad hump as was the case with GH.

The younger generation ( NG SA) are also more intolerant with each other. Too many high testerone studs trying to get scalps on their belts from both sides. Too many people guilty of small sample judgements. NG men believe rightly or wrongly that SA men are taking their history out on others and that the lagging effect of emasculatory policies have not been well researched. Also for some reason I think SA does not attract NG first team 🤷‍♂️

Your bias isn't allowing you to pick the point. Spending on women isn't the bad thing but making it a sense of entitlement is big turn off... Even God or Allah which ever you worship can provide all things yet hate entitlement... The entitlement mentality of MOST Nigerian ladies is sickening.
