guysbewise: Una like to talk rubbish too much for internet. There are millions of people worldwide working in tech after been self-taught...many don't even have a Uni degree, others studied dead courses like Water management resources for B.Sc and are now making hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly in tech... But here you are shouting Computer science degree. You, did you study CS? Many universities are now even planning to no longer offer CS as a whole course, breaking it down into smaller units like web development, etc so it can be more useful and applicable for students! Stop yapping BS to discourage others, pls. Coursera, Udemy, and the likes are growing massively. Google, Microsoft no longer require B.Sc as prerequisite to get a job in their multinational companies...but my guy on Nairaland thinks everyone's needs a CS degree. Dumbo! 4 Likes |

adonainana: I have written complex reporting applications with JavaScript and I've had a look at node.js in the past which did not take me time to understand. There is no need for me to master node.js unless I'm given a project at work that requires me to use and it will not take me time to master it and use it. I have been in programming now for about 2 decades and I know what I'm saying that you need connections as a self-taught to get a programming job both front-end or backend. |

RapportNaija: I have been in programming now for about 2 decades and I know what I'm saying that you need connections as a self-taught to get a programming job both front-end or backend. A CS or programming related degree gives you the skills and knowledge to learn any language you may need at work. Those providing programing trainning courses for self-taught without a degree in CS/programing related filed are just using this to cash in with a thread like this one. |

guysbewise: How can you as a computer science graduate not have any interest in node.js? Yet, a graduate of another discipline was disciplined enough to understudy it and you still feel you should have an edge over him? It's here in Nigeria that paper qualifications are revered, reason a certain old man had to fight tooth and nail to forge one for Aso Rock. The difference between you and OP is what remote employers exploit when hiring workers. Its about who can actually do it, not who can present a certificate. 6 Likes |

I understand your point (Work reference) however, from the OP write up he mention Portfolio which is your connection to the job and someone coming from tech background should know that, my point here with hard work and dedication and learning transferable skill you will surely make it. don't forget company nowadays not interested in retraining new staff mostly they are looking for someone with already job skill ready and your job interview is your connection to the job. [quote author=chinasaekpere post=128226580]I graduated from the University 12 years ago. Since then I have been jumping from one job to another with no progress in sight. I discovered that I have been stagnant for Years, so I decided to learn a skill. I started by learning how to make footwear, I learnt that for a year but I later discovered that it's not what I want to do, although I can make every type of footwear even boots. Last year I took an online course in frontend web development, for 6 months I studied for an average of more than10 hours daily learning from HTML and now React.js. I learnt figma, scss, CSS, Version control, jquery, bootstrap, Chakra UI and react.js, it was a tough one because I had to forfeit other means of making money. I got hungry so many times, I used my last card to buy data so I can keep studying and doing my projects. Earlier this month, I finished by portfolio project, I had already worked on 4 projects using react, Jquery, Chakra UI and bootstrap. I designed coupled of web pages using figma. Earlier this month, my girlfriend who's a data analyst sent me a link for a front-end developer role. In my mind, I didn't feel like I was ripe enough so I didn't apply. 2 days later, I decided to give it a try and so I applied. I was called to come for interview this Monday. On getting there, the company was working on this revenue web app project they are doing to for a particular state government. I was asked to develop the UI of one of the pages using react, CSS and Tailwind. I have heard of Tailwind before but I have never used it. I told the interviewer that I have never used tailwind and that I'm proficient using bootstrap. He replied that I should go through tailwind documentation and then use it to style the page on top of react. So I started reading the documentation, I discovered that it's syntax is somehow similar to Chakra UI which I have used once in my project, the are the same concept of class utility. So I decided to start coding, getting snippets from the documentation and then applying my Chakra UI knowledge to work around it. To cut the long story short, I coded from 9am in the morning and delivered the page by 5pm. I was sent an appointment letter today. So my tech journey officially started. It's a junior role though but I'm glad I broke the ice. The salary is what I have never earned in a month since I was born. 😊 congratulations brother |

guysbewise: You do not need connections for what only few people can do sir No difference between you and someone who can efficiently use node js . If you didn’t need connections to get the job you currently do What makes you think self taught computer programmers all of a sudden need connections Connections ke for people that are so few In this whole Nigeria I don’t think people who can use node js reach 1,000 people that’s how scarce they are What’s the correlation between needing connections to a particular tech stack that it’s bloody rare to find Like what usefulness is your computer science degree when self taught programmers know more about a specific tech stack than you What’s the point 3 Likes 1 Share |

DIVINEEVIDENCE: Once a self-taught gets a role through connections, all he does is use node.js or react for an application without understanding the best tool for the job. These are some of the things you learn about in a CS or a programming related degree like SE or Computer Engineering. It's like a self-taught builder that builds a house without knowledge of architecture, structural engineering but just knows how to paint and some other minor stuff and builds a house with it, compared with a builder with a degree in building. I have been in the software industry now for about 2 decades and I know what I'm saying that you need connections as a self-taught to get a programming job both front-end or backend. guysbewise: So only CS graduates can fix the bug in the programming section of naira land that turns certain characters to emojis .. self taught python programmers I think your obsessions is with the word self taught, maybe you can’t really come in terms with the idea that people can lock themselves in a room for 3 months and learn a programming language and be proficient in it You seem stuck cos you alternatively have a cs degree you automatically know everything and will fix anything Also you are obsessed with the fact that self taught programmers are getting millions of naira jobs whereas cs graduates are confused cos no one seems to be noticing them Maybe this is why you have concluded it’s connections any one who didn’t study computer science in school must use to succeed in the tech world Well your obsessions are quite unfortunate tho People are learning programming by themselves using their determination and will power After there are millions and millions of free resources on the internet and beyond If you want to build an anti virus computer software using python you will learn it without going close to the four corner of a university for any CS degree or anything It’s 2024, you can learn anything and become anything you want and nothing will stop you and nothing can stop you Hope my explanation helps 9 Likes |

gentlemate00: Abeg free the guy I think he is just angry at self taught developers he thinks they have taken the jobs of cs graduates who weee promised heaven and back just before graduation. He sounds a bit bitter Even these days all you need is a good portfolio showing links to which projects you have done and the tech stack you have used and how you used them . Tech is the only one place I can beat my chest that you don’t need connections just be very very good in what you are applying for and it’s guaranteed you are in unless of course someone comes better than you and can do much more than you in that particular scene 3 Likes 1 Share |

guysbewise:I have been following your comments and didn't want to reply, but you talk with so much confidence sha..., but guess what, calm down. There are exceptions atimes and I'm a full testimony. I studied medical laboratory science in school, but today, I'm a software engineer (python, and Java. As my core). To add, I got my job without connection and I earn over 1M Per month. Need I add that I was a self-taught developer starting out, using just ebooks 1 Like |

adonainana: No one will come out and tell you how they got their job through connections. I once worked for a company and the head of programming was not good with programming the reporting application which I was brought in to help them build as he was an electronics guy. The director was very pleased with my work and his big clients liked the application I was building, some time later the director, who was a nice guy told me confidentially that the head of programming is his inlaw, they then brought another guy that knew nothing as lead developer, then the two of them to mess up the application for them. I decided to leave them as I could not work with such people and guess what about two years later the company folded up. Once a self-taught gets a role through connections, all he does is use node.js, react or something they think they are good in for an application without understanding the best tool for the job. These are some of the things you learn about in a good CS or a programming related degree like SE or Computer Engineering. guysbewise:Stop discouraging others that might want to pick an interest in learning a tech course by themselves. And stop disgracing yourself sir. You are even making me feel like taking up a tech course. Must everyone now go back to University because of that ? Stop playing. The other guy kept giving you good reasons and you keep displaying arrogance in a faceless forum. Do you the number of people the OP story has inspired including me ? Do you even know the number of people without accounting background that are now chartered accountant and even gotten more international certifications ? Do we now say they got their respective appointment through connections ? My former unit head at access bank came from sciences as a graduate, he became chartered via ACCA when i had been in accounting before him(he can do things i couldn't do then). He now work in the UK in a consulting firm in a senior accounting role without any connections. Please put the Computer Science story to rest. My elder sister is a computer science graduate, but cannot use one single programming language(note: she's very brilliant). So let's appreciate people that had to come into a venture and give their all to achieve greatness like the OP.. 5 Likes |

Re: I Just Secured My First Tech Job. I'm So Happy. by guysbewise: 3:42pm On Feb 08 |
lokoventurex1: ACCA, ACA is a must if one wants to be a chartered financial accountant and most people who have ACCA or ACA already have a BSc which is a big advantage as those without a Bsc or HND will find it very hard to study ACCA, ACA. Who will you give your business or company's accounts to prepare for you a self-taught accountant or an ACCA or ACA? Same with programming you have BCS similar to ACCA. BCS is a study route for those without a CS or programming related degree so it's very important that programming jobs do require these for entry into programming. |
