The Anambra State Government has banned the depositing of corpses in the mortuary or any other place beyond two months from the date of death.

This is contained in a law enacted by the Anambra State House of Assembly. The law is to control burial and funeral ceremony activities in the state.

Anambra State governor Chukwuma Soludo commended the assembly for the legislation.

“Anambra Burial Law is a very Progressive law to remove the burden and pressure on the poor as well as liberate women from oppressive practices during burials,” Soludo said.

“We celebrate “befitting living” and only a decent funeral.”

By this law, all mortuary attendants are to report to the Ministry of Health of any corpse which has stayed beyond one month from the date it was deposited.

It warned that any person who contravenes the provisions will be fined N100,000 or six months imprisonment or both.

According to the new law, there shall be no public display of caskets for fabrication and sale.

They state that whoever is found guilty will pay a fine of N50,000 or one-month imprisonment or both. Also, the law looked into the registration of burial and funeral ceremonies.

It stipulated that all burial and funeral ceremonies of indigenous deceased persons in the state shall be registered with the town union of the indigenous deceased person.

Also, the registration fee for each burial and funeral ceremony shall be N 1,500.

Also, the new law warned against the blocking of roads and streets during burial ceremonies.

It advised that this can only be done with permission from the appropriate Local Government Authority.

100k as the fine for leaving a corpse for more than 2 months? You are not serious. Anambra guys will leave corpses for 10 years and pay the fine as an indirect way of displaying wealth and bragging. grin

Good. But what about unidentified corpses or the ones with a serious controversy like a prolonged court case or crime investigation? Mohbad, for example.

Good. But APAMS just left the group chat. I think makers and sellers of caskets should be allowed to display their goods. Should their showrooms now be hidden?

Anambra men will use this one to flex money and political muscles. They will obtain the permission and block road to show they are connected. This is a new cash out update for local government authorities.

And those who flout the order should be slapped with fine or six months imprisonment. The USA that we all envy for their orderliness and development is advanced because they have laws covering every aspect of their lives from marriage to divorce to approximate treatment of pets to pollution from cars. Nothing is too personal to be subject to regulations. Africans like lawlessness that's why they want to do as they please. Soludo is on point with this.

Registration for Burial is N1500. I can't do that. I will sponsor and lead a civil disobedience to get that out of the bill.

Half of the Anambrians are not living in the State let alone know your laws. If the father dies in Lagos or Abia State then Anambra State will force the children to bury him according to their time frame? Raa nsi ebe ahu.

That's what you get when a Governor is clueless. Misplaced priority.

No one has the right to tell family on how they should burial their love one or how long the body stays in the mortuary. As a Christian, nobody shouldn't decide but the family!

My questions is, doesn't the law apply to the rich who will do whatever they can to showcase their love that pass away?

This Soludo's administration is proving to be the most useless in the South East, alongside that of Mbah of Enugu.

Always majoring in the minor.

How dis one take concern am?

Is this the much talked about SOLUtion to Anambra’s problems?

Instead of those house members to make laws criminalizing converting public funds to personal use, they are more concerned with how caskets shouldn’t be displayed for sale! Does seeing caskets make them afraid of d3ath?

Hello good members of this forum. I hope this message finds you well. My friend has been exploring opportunities in the civil service, and I've heard that having the support of well-connected individuals (not just merit) can be beneficial. Given the network and experience of some members here, I was wondering if any kind hearted might have any link to politicians (or the likes) or advice or guidance on navigating this process. He's frustrated so, he'd greatly value your insights and appreciate any assistance you could provide.

Anambra is getting there gradually. Not everyone has the mind to stomach all those things.

Burial expenses should be kept as minimal as possible. Ostentatious displays does not do the dead any good and only burdens the living financially and emotionally. Of what use is borrowing money to showoff during burial? To please who?

Plus it's just gross disrespect, abuse of the dead, and also prolonging of the grief of the living to keep dead bodies without burial.

Grief should keep shortened anyhow possible, and not to be prolonged.
