My own is that in Nigeria we are not paying for the light we use. We are paying for the light we don't use...paying for the darkness we stay in.

I hope you will not remove subsidy from the air we're breathing sha...as una don comot (from backdoor) subsidy for breeze wey don cause heat everywhere.

Don't you understand what the man is saying? He isn't speaking Fulfude?

He said the government can no longer afford the subsidy. It does not take a rocket scientist to know this. The nation is bankrupt. Last year, debt servicing was to consume 96% of revenue earnings. Where's the money then to even run the budget. Practically everything would be borrowed.

The minister said the federal government is owing the Discos 1.3trillion and Gencos $1.3bn. Yet, you want the subsidies to still continue. How are they supposed to operate optimally with such unpaid debts? Despite that, you condemn the IMF.

The man said 450bn was calculated for subsidy this year but ministry needs 2trillion. It is obvious the government cannot afford the subsidy and yet you condemn the IMF? Do you want the federal government to borrow money or print it to solve it, adding to the crushing debt burden?

All the countries in West Africa pay a cost reflective price for their power. It is pricey but it's constant.

I pay about 3k monthly for power for a 3bedroom flat. Were I to pay a cost reflective price, it would shoot up to like 9k. That is still cheap considering cost of running a generator for 2 days would be more than that.

What the IMF will advice you is no different from what Charles Soludo or Pat Utomi would say. They are economists, liberal economists. They are technocrats. They will not tell you what you'd like to here.

If Nigerians want constant power, they must be ready to pay a cost reflective price for it. These power companies aren't charity organizations. There is no incentive to invest if armtwisted to sell at a loss.
What is this one saying Is the subsidy hampering the generation of sufficient electricity? Or is the subsidy the reason why our power generation keep dropping?. So the govt is subsidizing what we don't have? So if the subsidy is removed will that make the Gencos increase our power generation from 4kmw to 25kmw? Egypt with a lesser population has an installed capacity of 60kMw but generating 29kmw at the mo. So please answer me will the subsidy removal make the power generation increase or it just frees up more money for government looting

The painful thing on Nairaland is that most Nairalanders don't want to hear your message. They are in pain from the economic hardship, and anything that means increases in prices, even if it means economic benefits in the long run, is anathema to them

But the truth is, we have been paying subsidsied power prices for years, and we have bad power. We don't get the message and blame 'corruption and bad government'. Well, the bad government started with them forcing subsidsied prices on the power sector.

Even the argument on african countries paying cost reflective tarrifs, dem go tell you it is because they have smaller population. grin.

With which money?

When GSM came to Nigeria, they were allowed to set their prices. Many people complained of being ripped off...and true true they ripped us off...earned large profits.

But you know, they used those large profits to build up our telecoms infrastructure and system, the one we all use today.

And service was poor in the early days. Back then, you could not make calls between networks, or call landlines, and as for browsing on your phone? Haha. Yet, Nigerians paid the price.

Your power sector does not have that advantage gsm had. They are forced to charge at a loss, are paid subsides that do not cover that loss, and many Nigerians owe them lots of money from unpaid bills, and they are forced to rip off estimated billed people to make something to keep them from collapsing.

And you expect these people to give you light 24/7? ON top of such disadvantages? OK. o, sorry, but that is magical thinking, not rational economic thinking.

There is nothing like electricity subsidy. When then want to double the price of something they use subsidy to cover up
Re: FG Can’t Continue To Subsidise Electricity — Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu by idealogical: 5:14am On Feb 15
All the subsidies must be permanently removed because Nigeria cannot sustain subsidies indefinitely, subsidies is the reason why we in this mess.

Imagine borrowing and spending trillions to subsidize everything from petrol to Naira , electricity and even education.

We are basically living a fake and unrealistic life, you just cannot keep spending what you don't have.

Nigerians love to make noise about foreign and other debts, but they still want to live on the same debt financed subsidies.

Continued subsidies means a totally bankrupt future..

Because for a long time, Nigeria has not been harnessing its gas potential well...and this goes back decades.

We prefer to flare gas rather than use it.

Yes, power supply will increase once electricity bills are cost reflective. Nigerias installed capacity is around 12,500MW. This is more than the nation currently needs.

I am certain that within 2 year, Nigerians will be assured of at least 20hours of power supply.

Deregulated pricing worked magic in the telecoms sector and would do likewise in the power sector Mtel which was forced to sell at a "masses popular" price of 22 per minute went under.

It is not a matter of pre-paid meter, it is a matter of bills not being cost reflective....and a matter that a lot of customers do not pay their bills.

Power costs between N50-71 per kwh. The cost of producing that power is above N80 per kwh. Countries who have 24/7 power like Ivory coast have charges as high as N180 per kwh for power in households. And most people pay over there.
