I disagree. Every tribe has the way they utilise Egusi. If you eat yoruba 'osiki' you will know that the soup originally belongs to the yorubas.

IT IS ACTUALLY EGWUSI AND PRONOUNCED EGUSI.

IT IS NOT A YORUBA WORD.

YOU HAVE NOTHING THAT COMES CLOSE TO THAT IN TERMS OF SOUP.

AFTER EGWUSI SEED, U WILL SEE UZIZA SEED, OGBONO SEED AND MORE. ALL IGBO SOUPS.

Forget Wikipedia. I can go there and dump anything I want. Yoruba staple soups are Ewedu and efo. Everybody knows it.

Egusi is the anglicized version of Ogwusi or Egwusi, depending on the Igbo dialect.

Re: Igbo Soups All Nigerian Tribes Enjoy by Aragon001: 7:32pm On Apr 01
Egusi soup as the name goes is yoruba words for melon soup. In igbo is egwusi soup. In akwa ibom it is call ikon. Various ethnic groups in Nigeria have a name for it in their dialect.
Even outside Nigeria as mentioned here in nairaland, other tribes in certain countries have a name for it as well in their local dialect.
The appropriate name for it is melon seed soup. No tribe especially my ibo brethren have any right or claim over the soup origin. Since it is native to all tribes that have the plants growing in their lands.
The same right an ibo have over it is the same right a yoruba, edo, ibibio and other ethnicity in Nigeria have as well.
Let not be misinform pls and op always do ur research well before posting.

From some of the comments above, Igbophobic hybridised rabid animals are already WAILING even over Igbo dishes like Egwusi soup.
Lol!! Is there nothing about We Igbos that won't make Igbophobic rabid animals bark, howl, bleat on this forum?
This is interesting!
Egwusi soup is Igbo soup.
During colonial times, whites could not pronounce the GW sound properly and called it Egusi.
That is how the alternate spelling spread and became popularised.
Re: Igbo Soups All Nigerian Tribes Enjoy by Bluntemperor: 7:35pm On Apr 01
Egusi has no other name in Yoruba land, since immemorial,so which one be Igbo Soup here!

Egusi is a choice for many ethnicities in West Africa. It is not only the Igbo that have it. Melon is grown and used as a soup condiment all over our subregion. In fact, my father and his ancestors in Yoruba land knew nothing else called egusi. For us, egusi is a Yoruba word!
