And he also said akwa ibom is actually akwa ibo not ibom.

Yes it is.

Check out ancient Igbo vs Yoruba dictionary below.

YOU POSTED THAT AND SHOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT.

ELILI IS A GENERAL IGBO WORD THAT MEANS EATING, THE IGBOS HERE CAN TESTIFY.

ELILI COULD REFER TO THE MELON FRUIT ITSELF.

HOWEVER, THE SEED IS EGWUSI/EGUSI.

BOTH WORDS ARE EVEN SIMILAR AND END WITH I AND START WITH E.

IT SHOWS THEY ARE FROM SAME LANGUAGE.

Exactly πŸ’―% what I said earlier. It is not igbo soup oh. Let forget about calling it egusi soup and use the appropriate name which is melon seed soup as it should be called to avoid all these unnecessary arguments.
We don't have to run away from the name because it didn't originate from them. History of the crop and scientific studies on it do not give it to them. The crop belongs to West Africa with different names but egusi as a name is local to us. I have not said they don't have it too but we didn't borrow it from them. It's one of the ancient crops in Yoruba land and in many other parts of West Africa.

Konquest:

Someone posted here on NL sometime ago that it's only in the Anambra and Enugu States areas that the word "egusi" is used as a term and NOT other parts of Iboland. There are different subgroups and dialects among the people now collectively called Ibos today.

The words Akuko (Cock in Yoruba), Okuta means rock (Okute in Ibo), Omi (Igalas also call it Omi, Ibos call it Mmiri), Egungun in Yoruba (Igalas call it Egwugwu), Iba (Fever), Ogun (Medicine) or Ogwu, Ogede (Plantain), Ifa (Afa), etc, are a few of the words that are Yoruba in origin with just slight changes in spellings that can be found majorly in Igala language and some inflows into Ibo lexicon certainly took place because of the years of Igala interactions with the aborigenal tribes of what is now roughly Northern Anambra and Enugu States within the last 500 years.

Well, these areas of Anambra and Enugu State have indigenous Igalas too for over 500 years now and share boundaries with Igalaland in Kogi State, so, there has been an inflow of words of Igala origin into Ibo lexicon via Anambra and Enugu axis. Igala is officially a Yoruboid language with about 40 percent intelligibility with Yoruba language due to migratory fusions or admixtures that too place about 700 years between migrants (who moved along the banks of River Benue) from the Wukari area of Taraba State and a significant number of Yorubas and Edos in the Rivers Niger and Benue confluence according to the late Attah of Igala, Michael Ameh Oboni in a 2017 newspaper interview. This is how Yoruba words found there way into Igala language which also has historical relationship with the Idomas.

So, the claim by Yorubas that Egusi soup or the word "EGUNSI" came from them may actually be TRUE and through the years, the word found it's way into the Northern Anambra and Northern Enugu areas via the Igala landbridge from Igalaland.

Egusi soup (called obe egunsi/obe egusi by the Yorubas), and (ofe egusi by Ibos) is certainly a delicacy that has been indigenized among both groups, the Igalas, and indeed other Africans with different variations of cooking it with spicy ingredients.

You mean Yorubas own egusi yet they left it to pitch their tent with ewedu?

The way Efik and Calabar prepare Afang is the way Igbos prepare egusi and the way Yorubas prepare Ewedu.

No dey whine yourself

Lol. It's the manipulation and misappropriation of facts I don't even like. Same way how some of the Igbos keep playing the victim over the civil war but forgot they were the wicked ones who started the whole thing in the first place by killing other regional leaders except the Igbos while they destroyed Nigeria's true Federalism. Not only just that, they wanted to steal other people's territories which weren't theirs after they asked for secession because the North retaliated the killing of their leaders in North by killing every Igbos in the North. Thus the Igbo asked for secession however in their evilness, they wanted to steal other people's territory heritage in addition. That was when the Yoruba joined the war because Yoruba territory was involved in the nonsense.

Basically, their wicked nature made them kill other people's leaders while they destroyed Nigeria's true Federalism.

Secondly, in their covetousness, they wanted to steal other people's heritage.

So why play the victim when you're the evil one to begin with?

On the second post, of course ewedu is a delicious lovely soup as seen below. Aside it's delicacy, it's medicinal.

On egusi, egusi is a Yoruba soup as its name implies, which is Yoruba name. "Egun si" in Yoruba means to Shred to add. It's an Orunmila's soup as a matter of fact.

Igbo don't have much soup to begin with. They were found eating Human flesh and leaves at the time they were found in the forest, thus, food varieties were introduced to them. Most of Igbo few soup today was got from several tribes. Egusi was got from the Yorubas, even as the names implies. As a matter of fact, it's an Orunmila's soup.

Also, Apon seeds don't grow in the southeast but rather in the rainforest. No where they could have seen Apon seeds to make ogbon lo. Apon seeds was introduced to them but they couldn't pronounce it, thus pronounced it as ogbon which has no meaning in Igbo language as a matter of fact. "lo" was added which probably means slimy in Igbo language, although it means "to grind" in Yoruba language.. Thus Apon was meant to be grinded "lo", which was later pronounced as ogbon lo by the Igbos.

Igbo also copied some soups from SS. That's all. All these were introduced to the Igbos in a bid to civilise the Igbo who were found eating Human flesh. In fact, Ajayi Crowther was part of those who introduced these foods to the Igbos. Naturally, that's Yoruba culture. People who are sick/unwell are first given varieties of food to eat in Yoruba culture. That's the first treatment administered by IFA. And that was exactly what Ajayi Crowther (who's a core Oyo) did for the Igbos at the time, in a bid to stop the cannibal Igbos from eating Human flesh. Igbo got egusi, Apon, Iyan, fufu, Garri, eba etc from the Yorubas. All the names are in Yoruba names.

Egunsi soup with eran ogunfe is widely eaten among the Yoruba folks... and the Ekiti, Ondo, and Osun States areas have highly nutritious soups from well-documented evidence.

There are more than 20 types of soups in all parts of Yorubaland and there are threads here on Nairaland and other online platforms such as YouTube that list all of them. Yoruba culture is NOT monolithic but varies from region to region in terms of regional foods preparations. So, it is wrong of you to label or try to stereotype the Yoruba folks of over 50 million people with only one soup called ewedu when there are over 20 types of rich soups among the different regions of Yorubaland stretching from the Kogi and Kwara States axis to the 6 states of the West of Nigeria, to Yorubaland in Benin Republic and Togo, etc).

For your information, ewedu and gbegiri is used as quick preparation "snack" soups among the Oyo folks but they have other types of soups as well that cost even more to make with exotic seasonal ingredients.

Ewedu or jute leaf soups are also indigenous and widely eaten in other countries especially in West Africa.
