Am a strong advocate for capitalism and private sector control of the economy, you can check my quotes.

What you fail to understand is that what works in Western climes does not work here in Africa.

So why ask all those jejune questions?

Economics is the same everywhere, the principles work in China, Singapore, Chile, Ireland...all recent examples of prosperity sowed by conversion to liberal capitalist free market systems. It worked in Nigeria with SAP in the few sectors that were fully or partially privatized and deregulated. You know this, the evidence is there.

The primary reason it may seem not to work in Black Africa is the DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY of most nations. Homogeneity or at least ethnic dominance is a key factor for prosperity. I'd think you would know that too. grin

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Greed and selfishness are common human failings that can only be acted on when there's OPPORTUNITY to do so.

The major cause of corruption in Nigeria is

government ownership of economic resources & commercial companies,
government payment of subsidies and
government regulation of prices.

That's it. Once all that government involvement is abolished, there will be very little opportunity for anyone to act upon their natural tendency to be greedy, wicked and selfish. I've never heard of anyone consenting for sex as a condition to admission to Covenant or Igbinideon Universities, but it's rampant at Unilag.

Evidence in Nigeria - telecoms, cement and broadcasting companies. Very little complaints of corruption in those industries because government has very little involvement in their operations.

Simple stuff, but somehow very hard for Nigerians to comprehend.

Have a good day.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

I am afraid you do not know the full implication of what you are talking about.
Take electricity for example, after govt hands off, how will the masses survive monopoly from few discos owners who are after profit and can easily inflate prices without anyone bulging?

My thoughts exactly. Nigerians suffer from a strange mental block when it comes to understanding that the highly subsidized living they feel entitled to is at the root of the rampant corruption and slow growth they constantly wail about. The more government interferance in the economy, the bigger the scope for corruption.
stop talking like a capitalist bot.
Subsidies can never be the root cause of of cirruption.

For context: using N1,300 = $1

This N225 naira per KPH is about 17 cents per kilowatt hour. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000 monthly

North Dakota pays about 10 cents per kilowatt hour. Minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Texas pays about 15 cents per kilowatt hour. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).
While minimum wage is a good reference point to guage earning power of the lower class. It can be misleading sometimes too. How many private businesses pay that N30k, even with inflation?

Now that government is in complete control of electricity and even subsidizing the price, how much electricity supply are Nigerians getting?

When government owned the telecoms sector, how many Nigerians owned a phone?

When is the last time you used your local NIPOST office?

How come petrol and cement subsidy created so much scarcity of both commodities? Hmmm? I thought Dangote Cement and Arik Air and MTN were also monopolies, because many Nigerians angrily made that claim at the time, I remember it as clear as yesterday.

I understand your worry about monopoly. It won't be worse than the current situation.

One way to blunt the impact of monopoly is to make sure that as many Nigerians as possible own SHARES in electricity companies. So the populace will get profits & dividends from their investments.

TCN can be floated on the stock exchange and every family given one share. That's one idea, I'm no expert, there are other ways I don't know about.

Minimum Wage should be abolished. Some of the most prosperous countries in the world don't regulate wages...Norway, Sweden, Denmark. Switzerland only allowed STATES to introduce minimum wage about 5 years ago.

Scrapping all the State and Federal Ministries of Labor would reduce the cost of government too, Nigerian government is too expensive.

National Minimum Wage Laws destroy jobs.

I doubt you or anyone you know use NIPOST... very few Nigerians use NIPOST.

When I lived in Nigeria NIPOST was dormant, we used Luxury Bus operators to deliver letters and packages and also one company called Red Star or something like that. It was owned by DHL, I know because I checked.

Sending letters from abroad through NIPOST guarantees it will be lost or opened and searched and contents stolen. Up till this very day NIPOST only generates financial losses for the Federal Government ...just like every other government owned company or institution. I'm sure anyone trying to get employed or work a supply contract at NIPOST must pay a bribe or know somebody.

Not only in Nigeria sha... in the USA the government owned US Post Office generates BILLIONS of dollars in losses annually while private postal companies like FedEx make BILLIONS in profits

https://www.reuters.com/business/us-postal-service-reports-65-billion-net-loss-2023-fiscal-year-2023-11-14/

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday reported a $6.5 billion net loss for the 12 months ending Sept. 30, 2023 and said it will not breakeven next year as first-class mail fell to the lowest volume since 1968.

The Postal Service said revenue fell 0.4% to $78.2 billion results. U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said the loss includes $2.6 billion in inflation costs "above what we projected and what we were able to recover... We are not happy with this result."
grin shocked grin

No, NCC doesn't dictate prices. The operators only have to NOTIFY the NCC of price changes, guided by fairness and in line with competition, something like that.

The NCC can never force Airtel or MTN to charge a specific price. Never. That's why Nigeria has a functioning telecom system.

NCC tried to stop DSTV from increasing their prices. How did that work out? NCC doesn't regulate prices. That may change because Nigerians looove socialism but for right now NCC supervised markets have deregulated prices. Thank goodness for that. Again it's a major reason the telecoms system works for so many people.

Regulated pricing destroys all industries wherever and whenever implemented. Regulated pricing is a major factor that has destroyed the electricity industry, in addition to total government control through TCN.

NOTHING OWNED BY GOVERNMENT WORKS properly in any country. Government owned companies are ALWAYS inefficient and corrupt, unproductive and financially wasteful...in EVERY SECTOR or INDUSTRY.

This is basic knowledge every Nigerian must take to heart if we want to make the country better. Government is almost always the problem, not the solution.

Good Luck to Nigeria

NIPOST is very incompetent and thoroughly slow when patronised compared to DHL, FedEx or UPS. I say this as someone who was forced to utilise its service when I was expecting the Certificate of Eligibility by the Japanese immigration bureau. The policy by the immigration bureau states that the COE would be delivered by the public postal service of Nigeria since the dispatching party in Japan was by the Japan Post (a publicly owned service). JP did her part, but it took more than one month for NIPOST to acknowledge that it received a package from Japan Post. Eventually, after one month and two weeks, I got notified that the COE had arrived. Upon collection, the officials asked for egunje aka bribe, which I declined as I told them in clear terms I no go get money as I was planning a trip. At that time, it was useless as Japan locked its borders due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, I never had an issue sending documents to Japan because I utilised DHL all along. One week, and my documents arrived at the university.

When I re-applied to the same university and went through the same process of receiving the COE, I specifically told the school to inform the immigration bureau that NIPOST's workers were on strike and the COE should not be sent via it, but through DHL or UPS or FedEx. Expectedly, the COE arrived in less than two weeks via UPS. In fact, my instincts told me to call the office in my Nigerian city on the day of arrival to check whether the package had arrived (the school informed me that UPS would be used), and I was told the package was arriving that afternoon. I got to the office and got it. UPS workers never asked for a bribe, and the process was fast!

I explained it in the Japan immigration thread that no one should use NIPOST. Those who used NIPOST regretted it, and those who heeded to my warnings got their packages delivered swiftly via DHL.

Gerrard59:

Like ship wey dey sail for water? If so, currently, no idea. But if something comes up, I will let you know.

Any other form of logistics, I recommend DHL.

P.S. Don't ever use NIPOST in anything logistics.

Gerrard59:

No idea about Russia, but what I stated is the bare minimum for a foreigner to be employed as a pharmacist in Japan. I hope you know that medical programs are regulated according to national laws worldwide.
Before Covid, it was N23, 000. As of 2022, it was N30, 700. Use your intuition to know how much it should cost now. Preferably, Google DHL in your state and give them a call. For MEXT postgraduate, I do hope your BSc grade was at least a strong 2.1 (4.0/5) for you to stand a chance?

P.S. NEVER USE NIPOST

Publicly run services, especially in less homogenous countries, tend to be incompetent, slow and inefficient. Japan Post works swiftly largely because the Japanese are competent and the country is homogenous. No one asks for bribe because na dem dem. Due to the frequency of earthquakes, they understand the importance of swift deliveries of packages.

I regretted the day I used NIPOST, just I regretted using the public bus company owned by the state government. When I changed to God is Good Motors, I never encountered any problem of any sort.

Everything should be privatised. Publicly run services, especially in demographically heterogeneous countries, are inefficient, incompetent and corrupt. Privatise everything! Entrench the free market!

What is the cost of nipost versus the others like DHL Fedex?

NIPOST was considerably cheaper than DHL (according to their rating book). FedEx was about 22K (I sent documents to Norway), while UPS was 20, 100 naira to send to Japan. However, I have never sent documents via NIPOST as I dread anything publicly managed. That is, I don't like patronising the services of a governmental agency or organisation unless it is the only option. Where there is a private alternative, I use it no matter the costs.

But costs have nothing to do with competency as DHL Japan is more expensive than Japan Post, yet the latter delivers although a few days slower than the former.

DHL is faster than Japan Post. What Japan Post would deliver in one week, DHL does in three days, especially when the receiver is outside the country. That said, we cannot compare JP to NIPOST as both exist in vastly different countries in every ramification of life.

Why does the cost matter We all get what we pay for!!! COMPETITION is the natural regulator of price. Heeelllloooo? If DHL price is too high and producing vast profits, that's a signal of opportunity for OTHER INVESTORS to start another postal company. They can offer lower prices and take some of the profits.

That's EXACTLY what Globalcomm, Airtel and Econet did to MTN. The first private simcards in Nigeria were sold at 50K back in 2021. Today they're essentially free. You know that.

So why are Nigerians like you so impervious to economic principles and logic? I keep getting this idea I need to start a YouTube channel on political economy for the layman. Mr CodeTemplar your reasoning on this subject is really unfortunate!!!

OK so government owned Unilag is cheaper than privately owned Covenant University. What price do you put on the SEX a female has to offer in order to get admitted to potentially lucrative courses like medicine or Mechanical engineering at Unilag? What is the cost when a more competent or intelligent person is denied admission in favor of the son of an influential politician?

My friend you KNOW these things. What I need to know is why you all PRETEND you're so ignorant of REAL LIFE issues.

China is dominated by the Han tribe. I don't know if it's by force of arms or weight of population.

Rwanda is lately getting more notice for being an orderly nation. That's because it's now completely dominated by the Tutsi who are only 15% of the population but won a civil war. Point being that domination can be by force of arms or demographic weight. I hope that's understandable.

The USA has reached the peak of it's political-economic might as free market nation overwhelmingly dominated by the Christian Anglo-Saxon tribe and tradition. OK?

Go and check the demographics. Even today the Anglo-Saxons though reduced to about 60% of the population still have a slight hold on the society. The decline of the USA is accelerating precisely due to a declining Anglo-Saxon share of demographics AND therefore an increased DIVERSITY of the USA.

Go check the disastrous conditions in California where Anglo-Saxons are now less than 50% of population. THE only saving grace for the COUNTRY now is that all the other competing tribes of the USA are each less than 15% of population. There's basically no other Big Tribe.

In Nigeria there are THREE or maybe FOUR Big Tribes with substantial power. The Igbo are being cut down like the Anglo-Saxons but still have some power. So Nigeria is much more diverse than the USA. Or let's say that Nigeria has many more POWER CENTERS than the USA.

One thing I've noticed with Nigerians is they tend to analyze things based on an assumption of stasis instead of trends. That's guaranteed to produce wrong perceptions instead of a realistic outlook.

If indeed you're a devotee of free markets as you claim to be, then I suggest you start taking demographics into account. Population distribution is one of the major factors that dictate prosperity or poverty, especially in democracies.

Your "case" that economic principles can't work in Nigeria is nonsensical and shameful but expected. And of course you won't agree with ANYTHING I've written. That's the Nigerian way.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Nigerians are innately dishonest people, and to top it up, very stubborn at it. As I write, there is an ongoing antenatal argument on Twitter where ignorant and obdurate women are arguing that Nigerian men deliberately refuse to accompany their pregnant wives to the hospitals, whereas data shows that these men would love to, but for varying reasons, they cannot. These reasons are:

1) Their wives actually refuse them (the husbands) to visit the hospitals
2) Most workplaces would not give these men off-days for antenatal sessions.
3) Most men cannot take a day off because of the corresponding side economic effects due to their daily livelihoods

However, you have ignorant and obstinate women arguing otherwise, even with data shown to them. Cold and hard data, yet they refuse to accept. The men are no different, which is why people believe "Nigeria is rich", "Demographics are meaningless", "There is no subsidy" blah blah blah. Ignorance is one thing, the worst is their arrogance. The majority of Nigerians are notoriously arrogant with profound illiteracy. This illiteracy is not just verbal, but numeric. It is the reason they spew numbers from their yansh without evidence. And you know the worst thing about this illiteracy? When you question them about the origin or logic, they get angry. They have this foolish belief that they should not be questioned about the claims they make. Total nonsense!

Trust me, it is hard arguing or debating topical issues with the average Nigerian. It is like talking to a wall.

I rest my case.

Yes, emphatically. Ethnic and religious with some even having racial diversity (Mauritania, Somalia and Sudan). Na before I dey think say diversity aids development or prosperity, but it actually slows it down due to constant bickering and disagreement. It is a major reason nuclear families are more prosperous than polygamous homes.

The US is increasingly becoming diverse, and the effects are showing. The issue isn't necessarily the diversity of ethnicities or religions, but the kind of ethnicities and religions. All cultures are not equal. Some cultures are more equal than others. Some cultures promote prosperity, pragmatism, inquiry into the unknown, striving for higher education, integrity, hard work, peacefulness etc. There are some states in Nigeria that are silent performers in higher education simply because the cultural characteristics in those states promote education.

In fact, I was thinking aloud of a country which has Germans, Chinese and Japanese, with each having about 30%+ population. The prosperity of such a country would be so profound, education rates would skyrocket and it would be one of the finest countries the world has ever seen. At the same time, there are countries in Africa that aren't too prosperous but are pretty peaceful because their cultural characteristics aren't bellicose neither do they practice religions which condone violence.

To best answer your question, excluding racial diversity, I am willing to bet that Cross River and the entire North Central and North East have more ethnic diversities amongst themselves than ethnic groups in China and the US combined. You seem to underestimate the breadth of ethnic groups in Nigeria and surrounding regions. For cultural, racial, historical and linguistic reasons, I omitted North Africa. sub-Saharan Africa is highly diversified than China.

Just as we agreed, all cultures are not equal. Some cultures promote enterprise, pragmatism, integrity, freedom of thought and beliefs etc. These are characteristics that, when combined with capitalism and the protection of private property and investments, would become prosperous. On the other hand, some cultures go against those attributes I mentioned, such that even though they might be homogenous, they would never be successful and prosperous. A very good example is: Ibibios in Akwa Ibom vs ethnic Somalis. Exchange both groups to live in the other party's environment, and present-day Somalia would become a place many people from different parts of the world would desire to visit, while present-day Akwa Ibom would become hell on earth.

As you stated, it should not be a problem nor should it constitute a negative PROVIDED the group keep to itself and not spread its results to other groups. In pidgin, they should dey their dey

(2) Such a tripartite nation would NOT be stable at all if it's a democracy. That's for sure.

Because they are different racial groups, I might agree with you because Belgium and Switzerland are examples to prove that different ethnicities promoting the same characteristics can live in harmony even with equal population percentages. Olden day Malaysia, which had the present-day Singapore, could prove you correct. However, the Malays did not promote the same characteristics as the Chinese in the now Singapore. If those Malays exhibited qualities like Germans, it would have worked seamlessly.

If you care to know, just use Google and read up on the origins and evolution of this scandal.

For comparison, the budget of the Federal Government of Nigeria has NEVER exceeded $40 billion since 1999.

Combined TOTAL annual REVENUES of all levels of government in Nigeria...federal, State and local.... has not exceeded $30 billion or maybe $40 billion in the last 4 years....last year it was $30 billion.

And here's $55 billion just disappeared like that.

Good Luck to USA.

It still does not change the fact that corruption is higher and more prevalent in Nigeria than in US.

Actually the magnitude of corruption in Western countries and even China is higher. For one there isn't much money to steal in Nigeria.

But can you tell us the CAUSE of corruption in Nigeria or anywhere else for that matter? If we know the cause, then at least we can propose solutions. I've asked this question severally in different conversations yet no reply.

What is the CAUSE of corruption?

Good Luck to Nigeria.

So we can agree that the MAGNITUDE of corruption is higher in USA and other developed nations? grin

Now let's discuss the CAUSES of corruption. So we can get to SOLUTIONS.

What do you think is the CAUSE of corruption in Nigeria...or anywhere else?

Good Luck to Nigeria.
