More context and data (using N1,300 = $1 conversion rate):

Electricity cost per KWH for band A in Nigeria = 17 cents. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000 monthly.

Electricity cost per KWH in North Dakota (US) = 10 cents. Minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Electricity cost per KWH in Texas (US) = 15 cents. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Note: Many Nigerians living in major cities (rich or poor) in Nigeria fall within the band A category, including residents and businesses.

Going back to your samples for North Dakota and Texas, compared with Nigeria, how much money is left in pocket after deducting taxes and bills from the monthly minimum wage income?

Use the following as guide

Who pays Federal Tax on minimum wage?
North Dakota, Texas.

Nigerians on minimum wage of N30,000 or less are exempt on PAYE tax.

Who pays State Tax on minimum wage?

North Dakota.

There is no individual state tax for minimum wage in Nigeria and Texas.

Who pays Local Govt Tax on minimum wage?
North Dakota, Texas.
Nigerians are exempted.

Who contributes into Social Welfare Security?
Same as above.

Who pays deduction for health insurance?
Same as above.

Who pays retail and sales tax?
Same as above.

Who pays mortgage/renters insurance on minimum wage?
North Dakota, Texas
Nigerians do not pay mortgage/renters insurance.

Auto insurance is discretionary for all three.

Who pays utility bills - water, sewage, electricity/gas, waste disposal?
North Dakota, Texas.

...long story short, at end of month, after all deductions, a minimum wage earner in North Dakota and Texas are no better in quality of living than a minimum wage earner in Nigeria. If I complete the list of monthly debts hanging on the neck of a Dakotan, a Texan and a Nigerian, you will understand that the Nigerian minimum wager has far less pressure and comes out better than others. The comparative advantage in Dakota and Texas is safety and security, and even that one sef get k-leg, considering gun laws and rate of ownership amongst psychotic patients in the two NRA leaning states.

Just as Obasanjo wanted to please the north by using Iwuruwuru INEC to make sick and dying Yar’Adua president? Or Yar’Adua was the best choice among Obasanjo’s viable options in 2007

Definitely not in the area of electricity prices without looking at the basic economic indicators as well as common services and utilities.

How does our country compare with America on the minimum wage and the gap between politicians total package vs. what is paid to civil servants

Abeg help us ask them o. The brilliant American trained gurus who made Lagos the 3rd economy but failed to provide low cost houses for civil servants and teachers.

Yet they brand themselves as progressives instead of claiming and owning up to their progreThief label.

How many extreme poverty Nigerians, earning 30k minimum wage if they are not jobless, and struggling to pay school fees because governors and local government chairmen fail to provide free education, are spending more than 21 million on diesel because they are hospitality companies?

So who is myopic now

Let's look at the facts on ground.

House 1
Power load = 2000W
Average of 20hrs/day gives 600 hours in a 30 day calendar month.
Power consumption = 2kW * 600h = 1200kWh
Cost of power consumed = ₦225 * 1200 = ₦270,000

House 2
Power load = 2000W
Power is generated using a 2.5 kVA petrol generator. Running wattage is 2000W.
Fuel efficiency = 1.1litres/hour (15 litres in 14 hours at 50% load - generator will consume more if we increase the load but let us stick with this for the purpose of this comparison)
For House 2 to generate 600hrs in a month requires 660L of PMS.
At ₦560/litre, House 2 will spend a sum of ₦369,600 in an attempt to replicate power supply from DISCOs. Maintenance cost has not been factored in these calculations.

A lot of small scale businesses spend up to ₦178,000 monthly running petrol generators.

Power is not cheap!

Government is trying to tax the middle class that APC have long eradicated and the so called rich that is getting poorer by the day due to their shylock policies.

I see no reason for this.

Why are the meters still expensive in a country with so much population? N83500 is damn too much....Why can't meters be portable and affordable @ from 4000 Naira? Let people be allowed to regulate what they consume..... This is just an excuse , 24 hrs light is non negotiable

The Tinubu government has just increased electricity cost for band A customers to N225 per KPH.

For context, customers in the US pay about the same cost per KPH (or cheaper) depending on the state you live in.

Energy analysts are explaining that Nigerians are willing to pay more if they have access to electricity.

Based on data from NerdWallet, the average monthly electricity cost in the US is about $137 which is about N178,000.

Are you willing to pay N178,000 monthly for electricity for a 24-hour supply?

But I don't spend this much here

I think we need to install prepaid meters

I pay for light bills, gas bill, water and management bills monthly, e never pass 400rmb per month

172.5x400=69,000 naira

Na during cold season I don pay 1300rmb because I used heater very well

Who says Nigerians don't pay taxes?

We are pushed on every side as Nigerians.

Tax is paid directly and indirectly that is why many companies are folding up rather than thriving and many Nigerians 'caving' in and shouting 'ebinpawa'

Taxes: VAT, Deposits& Transfers 'tax', Fixed deposits tax, Stocks tax, Mutual fund tax, FGN bond tax, Treasury bill tax, shop taxes, agbero@ Motor parks and road taxes, land use charges/ 'ground rent', income tax, property sale tax, letter of administration tax etc.

Sometimes they come even in more than one way at once.

Power is not cheap, but wages can be low right? A country that pays between 18k-30k as minimum wage yet you believe this is logical.

The average graduate in Nigeria earns between 50-150k monthly. There's cost of feeding, rent, clothing, taxes, transportation... so what's left for the common man? Most of you don't reason before sharing your capitalist views.

This is how people fail exams, turn around and blame their lecturers. Answer a simple question and you are here telling a needless story.

To answer the question, I don't think the United States should be used as a benchmark because that country is very rich and we don't operate a dollar economy here. People can afford to pay that in the US, but we cannot.

Come to think of it, we don't import the raw materials we use to generate power. We have gas reserves in Nigeria and hydrothermal energy comes from dams.

How do Ivory Coast and Ghana enjoy steady power? Do they pay up to that? If they don't, we don't have any reason to. ECOWAS subregional countries share so much in common. What works for A should work for B. Those countries should be our yardstick, not almighty America!

Oga, you say we do not run a dollarized economy but your customs benchmarks duty to the dollar.

You say we do not have a dollar economy but the costs of majority of food items cost as much if not more in dollar terms.

The only cheap service in Nigeria, that is not benchmarked to the dollar, is labour. Every other, in one way of the other, is benchmarked to the dollar. In real terms, majority of Nigerians are dirt-poor.

Nigerians with no critical reasoning liking your post. Make una dey apply critical reasoning skills.

Nigerians are not ready for good governance. I echo what Rotimi Amaechi said ,if truly Nigerians re suffering, they know what to so to demand for good governance. I stated it here on nairaland that Nigeria is in a terrible state now and also being managed poorly cutrently ...when I said on this forum that if only the citizens knew what they are in for, they would all be on the streets demanding for better policies some cursed me. This rise was already predicted by the Economist Intelligence unit as far back as November last year. They also stated recently tgat the Nigerian govt. Is likely to double the VAT rate soon. That will likely happen and the citizens will also whine and go back to ther huzzles to continue suffering.
