I'll rather install better inverter/solar that can power. TVs, fans and refrigerator....
Friend of mine have it installed in 2022 for about 500k. Its about +700k now...but worth it...

From what I heard, the increment is only applicable to those on Band A.

Band A customers are those customers who receive power for a minimum of 20hrs per day.

Band A: 20 to 24 Hours supply

Band B: 16 to 20 Hours supply

Band C: 12 to 16 Hours supply

Band D: 8 to 12 Hours supply

Band E: 4 to 8 Hours supply

(not that I'm in support of the increment though, this is just to shed more light on the issue)

The Tinubu government has just increased electricity cost for band A customers to N225 per KPH.

For context, customers in the US pay about the same cost per KPH (or cheaper) depending on the state you live in.

Energy analysts are explaining that Nigerians are willing to pay more if they have access to electricity.

Based on data from NerdWallet, the average monthly electricity cost in the US is about $137 which is about N178,000.

Are you willing to pay N178,000 monthly for electricity for a 24-hour supply?

You are doing comparison and your brain refused to tell you the percentage of that 24hours light for the minimum wage in the US.
Electricity bills is less than 10 percent of the minimum wage in the US while you are asking if we can pay about 600 percent of minimum wage as electricity bill in the country.

Make Una dey think small small.

I have always said it here, Nigerians that can afford 24 hours electricity already have it

There is no one that wants electricity 24/7 that can't get them

Nigerians want the impossible which is free/cheap and steady electricity... Electricity is luxury and we are too poor for it right now

We don't need electricity for development

There is absolutely no company you can start only when you have electricity 24/7 that u can't start now
But electricity is cheap, dirt cheap actually, in China. How do they do it??

you say "power is not cheap".

is the power available?

How can it be available when a nation of 200 million people is still struggling to produce 12GW?

The sector requires massive investment on infrastructure and these investors will not enter an industry where the Nigerian state will sell cheap electricity to its people.

Read up on NESCO in Jos and Ossiomo in Benin. Their clients pay premium to enjoy 24/7 light.

Let's look at the facts on ground.

House 1
Power load = 2000W
Average of 20hrs/day gives 600 hours in a 30 day calendar month.
Power consumption = 2kW * 600h = 1200kWh
Cost of power consumed = ₦225 * 1200 = ₦270,000

House 2
Power load = 2000W
Power is generated using a 2.5 kVA petrol generator. Running wattage is 2000W.
Fuel efficiency = 1.1litres/hour (15 litres in 14 hours at 50% load - generator will consume more if we increase the load but let us stick with this for the purpose of this comparison)
For House 2 to generate 600hrs in a month requires 660L of PMS.
At ₦560/litre, House 2 will spend a sum of ₦369,600 in an attempt to replicate power supply from DISCOs. Maintenance cost has not been factored in these calculations.

A lot of small scale businesses spend up to ₦178,000 monthly running petrol generators.

Power is not cheap!

Clown, all this clowns on nairaland will just spring up from nowhere to justify nonsense.

This same government you're defending till date have refuse to cut cost of governance but will go after anything that the masses is benefitting.

More context and data (using N1,300 = $1 conversion rate):

Electricity cost per KWH for band A in Nigeria = 17 cents. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000 monthly.

Electricity cost per KWH in North Dakota (US) = 10 cents. Minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Electricity cost per KWH in Texas (US) = 15 cents. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Note: Many Nigerians living in major cities (rich or poor) in Nigeria fall within the band A category, including residents and businesses.
egypt enjoy 24/7 electricity but don't pay this much monthly, although prepaid will determine the amount here also as you may pay more or far less

This is a joke. Running my generator on-demand for 30-days will not amount to that sum.
I'd rather invest that amount in a solar setup and be totally off-grid that. That is almost the average light bill in a developed country on paltry third-world wage.

But electricity is cheap, dirt cheap actually, in China. How do they do it??

China's total installed electric generation capacity is 2.92 TW, spread across renewables (40%), coal and nuclear energy.

That's 2,920,000 megawatts!

This is a country that was poorer than Nigeria and most of the world in 1976 when Mao Tsetung died and Deng Xiaoping took over.

I think we're all ready to pay. In this age of low energy appliances why would a house be using up to 2kva they can't pay for?

It's not about wasting what you can't pay for, it's about getting responsible for what you use daily.
They're Led bulbs as low as 15watt that could be use in every building. Some people have this habit of putting light on everywhere in the house like they're everywhere Everytime.

The tariff should be charged and prepaid meter distributed so people will be well disciplined.

When the govt wants to cheat Nigerians, they begin comparing it with the US standard but if it's what will benefit the masses they will not compare anything and they won't do it. There is work in the US. Where is the work here? US senators do not pad budget but it's done here. Is there tax refund here just like the US? Good roads, medical treatment are absent here. The govt of the US pays social brnefit but in Naija it's oyo. Can a man whose educational records are questionable be elected president? The answer is no. I dey laugh

Make una no vex o... If the tariff for those in band A is increased, I believe it's because they WILL BE PROVIDED up to 20hours light per day

Now, in a situation they don't get up to that number of hours per day, is there a compensation for them or can they sue PHCN and win, because that's the basis on which they're paying that much?
