Labour be behaving like opposition now. Even if FG pays 1 million, there would be inflation and commodities would still be on the high side. Welfare packages such Health insurance, education subsidies for dependants and mortgage for housing will cushion the proposed wage. Nevertheless, the important things to consider now is not the wage but high cost of governance and complete localisation of our economy amongst others. Awon were Pitobi

Now, this is becoming a comedy

The bail out funds was mostly for salary, that's N30k minimum wage oo

Government and Labour should settle for N70-N80k for now. Then fish out the ghost workers who are consuming Chunk of the salaries, money saved from that should be added to new minimum wage in a year or so

Ask yourself how do they see money to embezzle?

This nation doesn't produce anything for export.
hence the bad economy and terrible minimum wage.
Labour is busy comparing minimum wage and lifestyle with countries that produce things for export.
Those nations produce things that's why they have the power to dictate livable minimum wages.
This nation does not produce and we simply cannot afford livable minimum wage.
If they like print more Naira notes, you'd get instant inflation and the price or EVERY OTHER THING
will increase. Things will end up being just as unaffordable as they are now.

But the government can pay ministers, house of assembly members, executives members etc huge amounts of millions and still pardon the likes of orji uzor kalu, yahaya Bello for embezzlement.

If you make the minimum wage 500k from what it is now, the level of inflation will make Zimbabwe and Argentina child's play.
Inflation will be astronomical. The govt can't even afford to pay that anyway, they better come back to reality and come up with a realistic figure.

Mehn! Jokes have levels, but this one is beyond levels. 500 wetin?

Let also the government joke like Buhari by accepting and sign.

100k is still a terrible joke. But i know what they're trying to do anyway. They want the government to use their own mouth to pronounce something close to 100k so that if they refuse to pay, it won't be as if the amount was imposed.

Great job, Guys... Please keep it up!
but millions paid to senators and HOR members since 1999 isn't a joke right?

So in this people mind, the average private nursery school in Benue or Osun can afford to pay each of their teachers 500,000, and that one-man struggling business can afford to pay their cleaner 500,000k per month or you think minimum wage begins and ends at the public office, in fact, currently some states ain't even generating enough to pay the 30k minimum wage,

if level one step one is 500k, how much will fresh graduates which usually start at level 8 receive, 3.5million monthly I guess, then a level 13/14 senior public servant will receive 13m monthly or do you intend to pay level one step one 500k but intend to pay level fourteen 600k?

I'm glad to know there are still reasonable people who can evaluate this situation.

I've made somewhat similar comment on certain posts. And some NL kids made derogatory comments.

Also, if the federal government should pay 500k as minimum wage, the ripple effect will cause prices of goods to go higher

Some people don't understand the difference between corrupt and legitimate earnings.

A Senator's basic salary may not be more than 1 million per month. But they steal to earn more. That is the corruption in Nigeria.

Will paying civil servants 1million minimum wage make them not to be corrupt or aid corruption?

Now to civil servants. Some civil servants earn their basic salaries, but still steal from the public. Yes, they steal. Some will ask for bribes for them to do their legitimate tasks. Those are corrupt civil servants.
Again, Senators will not be stealing without the help of the civil servants. Those civil servants working in the National Assembly are also part of those who will benefit from the new minimum wage, have they ever protested against the visible corrupt practices in the ministeries or National Assembly?
Re: Labour Slashes Proposed New Minimum Wage To N500,000 by triplechoice(m): 11:13pm On May 22
Most of the people here calling labour leaders unrealistic are very far from being realistic.

They're yet to understand how labour union leaders arrived at the initial figure of 615k , now reduced to 500k. If they knew, they wouldn't call them unrealistic. The federal government negotiating team has not for once used the word ,unrealistic ,to describe labour's proposal because they understand what's at stake. They're even begging labour to come and continue the negotiations while some here on Nairaland are shouting , "unrealistic! unrealistic ! , hyperinflation hyperinflation"! as if they know any better than those in the negotiating team.

500k of today is no longer not what it was before the naira was floated. The true value of a country's currency is determined by what it can purchase from the market and not just the figures attached to it.

A year ago if you take 500k to the market, what you buy is much more than what that same about of money can get your today.

The people calling 500k huge money are financial illiterates who are blinded by figures and still have their minds stuck in the past where that amount of money in Nigeria was much more valuable than it's currently is.

At the moment, the true value of 500k is Just over 150k when you consider the current exchange value of the naira to the dollar. A year ago the amount of dollars you can exchange 500k with is about 3 times more than what you get today. So how is 500k still huge money?

And you think you know better than the economic experts in both the federal government negotiating team and those in the IMF who haven't said anything about hyperinflation?

What you fear is only possible if more than 80 percent in Nigeria will earn the minimum wage. The situation in this country is completely different than what's obtainable in countries where minimum wage is nearly for everyone.

In Nigeria, only less than 5 percent are qualified to receive minimum wage in both the public and private sector. So, tell me, how can that translate to too much money entering the system to cause hyperinflation?

Just rest . Your fears are unfounded. It's based on a very wrong application of basic economics theory and principles you learnt in secondary school. You need to learn more.

It's funny that some on here are name calling NLC and saying 500k is too much. I can see that the psyche of poor Nigerians citizens are broken.

NLC/Nigerian professionals are finally fighting the class warfare that's been due for years. If you don't have anything to add, why not just keep mute.

Exactly...lots of them commenting have been so broken that they no longer know their right.. !!

They rather chose to pitch their tent with the oppressor...!!
If a single individual can steal money running into trillions in Nigeria then the government have money to pay what NLC is demanding...!!!

The story of no money and inflation been peddle is simply a fallacy and cooked up storiea by same politicians and spread by their touts who don't know their left from right...!!!

The other group who are oppose to what NLC is demanding are those who out of cheers jealousy feels the average Nigerian worker would be earning a good pay and don’t want it cos they won't be partaking in the pay rise...!!

You are actually the joker for not realizing that you don't bid from a position of weakness!

This was the mistake former NLC chairman ayuba waba made when he decided to use his final negotiation #60k as the first!
That's why it was easy for FG to offer 25k and finally 30k!

Bidding 615k will give organised labour a superior bidding advantage of which their final endpoint may be between 100-200k!

How is it possible that most of you can not decifer simple and basic negotiation tact's!

Even if the intention of labour was to arrive at 100-200k,it will be illogical and unintelligent to start from there as a first negotiation!

The idea of negotiating a price from a higher amount is to offer you some leverage and advantage!

This is what organised labour is exploring!

That's why they crashed the amount to 500k which might likely come down more if FG is able to make a reasonable offer!

are senators engineers and contractors to paid constituency allowance?
are constituency allowances corrupt earnings?
do senators require the input of civil servants to be paid millions in constituency allowance quarterly? The answer is NO!
lets forget corrupt earnings and face d legitimate ones..its still too enormous!
if Nigeria can afford the politician humongous wages and benefits, a reasonable minimum wage of 100k is highly realistic for workers sir

Illusion.
Even in the private sector where the real money is, it takes so much time for an employee to earn #500k.
I worked for 5 years before I struck the half a million naira salary.
In as much as I want Nigerian workers to have a good life and afford basic needs, labour should be reasonable enough to propose a minimum wage that the government can pay.

A minimum wage that government can pay is N60,000 and anything else is a waste of time at this point.

Receive some sense.

There is no sense or tact in an extremely unrealistic, bogus and ridiculous demand,it portrays unseriousness ,clownishness and probably insanity.

Labour could have demanded for N150k and finally settle for not less than say N75k or even N100k.

Expecting government to pay for the stupidity of a fresh school cert holder earning a minimum wage, but decided to have a family of 6,is the highest level of insanity.
