A 650k bpd refinery needs a lot of crude to achieve continuous steady state production. Nigerian oil production volumes has been seriously affected by so called crude oil theft and under investment by major players. In addition to that,a good percentage of future production has already been used to take loans and there must be some leftover that will be sold to earn fx which the country badly needs,so for now,Dangote has no option but to import crude. In the long run,Dangote may need to also become an upstream player so that he can assist produce enough crude to feed his huge refinery.

Why Nigeria always defies logic? Even Law of Demand and Supply scattered when it reach Nigeria turn. One would think Nigeria would never import crude oil but now we are going back to buy what we have sold to US before.

There are 2 bare faced lies here: the first is they aren't aware that Dangote imports crude oil and second is there's no more subsidy on petrol.

It's lamentable.

Why should the government be monitoring the activities on how a business man run his business when he his not doing illegal things.

Shalaye is unnecessary

That is not the issue.

The issue is why is Dangote importing crude oil when Nigeria has an abundance of crude oil here, considering Nigerias brand Bonny Light crude is very low in Sulphur.

THIS MINISTER SHOULD BE FIRED FOR LYING TO NIGERIANS PUBLICLY.THIS IS DECEPTION AND BREACH OF PUBLIC TRUST THE FIRST AND SECOND SHIPMENT HAS BEEN DELIVERED. HE IS STATING THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT AWARE OR IN CONTROL OF THE BORDERS OF THE COUNTRY !!

A second shipment of U.S. light sweet crude oil is on its way to Nigeria, according to a trader and ship tracking data. The Dangote refinery is increasing its crude oil purchases.

The vessel Otis, carrying about 850,000 barrels of WTI Midland crude oil, left Houston last week and is headed for Lekki, Nigeria. According to tracking services Kpler and LSEG, it is expected to arrive around mid-March. The vessel was chartered by Vitol, a major energy and commodities company.

Earlier, the first shipment of 2 million barrels of U.S. crude on the large vessel Gem No. 1, also chartered by Vitol, was nearing Nigeria and is expected to arrive next week.

The Dangote refinery, Africa's largest with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, is located on a peninsula near Lagos, built by Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote. The refinery started purchasing crude oil in December last year, with Nigeria's state-owned oil company, NNPC Ltd, being the main supplier.

Recently, the refinery issued tenders to sell two fuel cargoes for export, according to a tender document and trading sources.

In summary, Aliko Dangote’s refinery is now importing crude oil from the USA to meet its processing needs, marking a significant step in Nigeria's oil industry.
Nicely put.

There's NO way though that Heineken Lokpobiri wouldn't have known that cheap crude shipments are on the way from the United States because it's been reported in the global media on sites such as Bloomberg and other international sites that I regularly visit which are devoted to reporting global energy issues. The newspaper publication may have misrepresented him here. It's either he meant that he wasn't aware of imported crude oil that has recently landed in Nigeria for Dangote. I will have to see the full video of the comments Heineken Lokpobiri made to really be sure that the newspaper isn't misrepresenting his words. A lot of newspapers and Journalists usually misrepresent people's live comments from time to time, NOT just in Nigeria but globally.

Dangote Refinery can always complement crude oil sourced from Nigeria with cheaper crude oil sources from the U.S. and even TotalEnergies is also gearing up to supply Dangote with crude oil. As long as the pump price of fuel is cheaper than it is now, and Dangote Refinery is able to declare profits, then all is well.

He would buy crude oil where it's cheapest as via his energy traders as Nigeria's crude is not particularly cheap, especially that it's sweet, and it's better refined for high octane premium gasoline.

It happens all over the world, Canada (an oil producing country buys crude from the US. US also buys crude from Canada and Saudi Arabia. UK buys crude from Libya even though it has crude in the North Sea e.t.c)

The refined crude would be what will flood the Nigerian market since cost of transportation will be eliminated, and Nigeria would have an edge as it's at its doorstep.

This will retain in the country forex used in importing refined crude. However, that minister needs to be sacked for extreme ignorance.
Succinctly stated.

WTI from the U.S. is cheaper than Bonny Light (despite having a low sulphur content) from Nigeria.

Chinedu is also a private business owner, but the government monitors his business because he's from a part of the country, and closes the border or increases import duties because of Shinedu.

The government will not be talking about FX and BDC today if not because they think they shoupd kill the businesses of a region who imports items using forex.

Now when it gets to Dangote or Otedola, the government will become deaf, dumb and blind at the same time.

What you said is complete utter nonsense.

Imports are not bad for a country. They are actually very good. It promotes commerce and builds wealth. Importers are employers of labour as well.

Nobody is trying frustrate Igbo businesses. If they did rhat, would not non-Igbo suffer as well. The same import duty you pay is the same Olajumoke will pay.

Lol.

For a country that depends on crude oil as major forex earner, you really believe someone will import crude oil into the country legally without being granted concession?

Either the minister is lying or Dangote is filthily corrupt or the nation done dabaru pass normal levels.

So you are saying that the US crude is cheaper to import and then refine when compared to the refinery that is situated in Nigeria buying Nigerian crude and refining!!!!?

So why would anyone sane mind invest in Nigerian crude to refine?
