TRUTHTELA:

@eros, That's not TRUE, my family lives in NORTHERN FORSHORE Lekki. Do you live in Lekki? Why I ask this is because, thousands of people that in my estate will not leave the COMFORT of their HOMES to face MAD MOPOLs. The estate provides everything & people do not see any reason to go & risk their lives over something they can afford. Lekki residents ( the ones i know though ) ARE NOT READY TO RISK THEIR LIVES. IT will fade away by Monday, when they will need to go & work for the money they will use to buy COMFORT. My guy, FORGET NAIJA, we're not there YET, it's all a wish!

So you think having all you can get in NF is enough consolation for you to pay another N544,320 per year to LASG in the name of toll gates, after given 20% of your pay to the same govt as tax, without any amenities?
FYI, people in Lekki Phase 1 has only one toll gate to worry about, people leaving farther away have more.  People in NF that have kids in schools further down towards Epe should worry about 2 toll gates to and fro everyday.
by the way there were so many oil company workers at the rally this morning. If fact, majority of participants would afford the tolls, but an unjust situation must be confronted.

@ MyloXyloto, How I wish you can make a little SENSE, then I can take it from there. Go & work HARDER & come back.

LOL transporters can be excluded as well.

those houses are not meant for "ordinary salary earners" you need to be big to live in such as enivor wink

So you get my point.

Transporter would not be excluded.

And the poor salary earners will bare the brunt of that toll.

And let me tell you those big men with escorts and convoy will never pay that toll.
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by TRUTHTELA: 9:25pm On Dec 17, 2011
@ Remmi, we have ENORMOUS issues to deal with in Nigeria. Why this TOLL alone? and WHY NOW? However, those oil workers you mentioned CANNOT risk their WORK on Monday to come & "OCCUPY LEKKI". People that can only protest on a SATURDAY, is that a PROTEST? They can't protest, wait till they deploy SOLDIERS. This DRAMA is not sustainable. That's my own.

emmatok, Yes I get your point

in Nigeria or lets say Lagos, we have the rich, poor and mid-class

the rich and mid-class can pay

the poor should not be in lekki unless he is an elegushi person which is awori thus it is an ancestral land which he can get exemption sticker for if he has a car.

Moreover, there is an alternative route by road

as for the public transport, I bet they can get the stickers as well thus the majority of the toll gate payers would be those working in VI ikoyi and co.

How can we  pay 4 road to b constructed nd still pay thieves contractor for 30yrs? Really! Acn lead by tinubu is a 419 govt only force to b pilot by fashola. Fashola b careful with ur policies, tinubu cud bastardize ur good image nd work. A word is enough for d wise

Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by lovejo(m): 9:29pm On Dec 17, 2011
When I passes through this road when I came to Nigeria in June I knew it was wrongly built, the first one can be justified as port of entry toll gate which i can presume normal.
Sincerely toll gates is not for residential area, it should be built at strategic entry of each major city to mark beginning of new entry, seeing those toll gates i know it will make it hard for residents just to go and shop in Shoprite.

Within a toll gate you should be able to go to your office, buy all what you need within, planning of those 3 tollgates is unfair, moreover there should be alternate route, which is as good as the main road but longer, without that the toll gate can not be justified.

I strongly believe that the whole 3 toll gate thing is TIUNBU'S IDEA to milk Lagos again

I would strongly advice Fashola to just make 1 toll gate and reduce the price from 150 N to about 20 Naira

If fashola is serious about his political career that is !

He needs to thread carefully, really

Truthtela, na wa o. So if you can afford to live in Northern foreshore estate and can afford to pay a premium for toll fees dont mean everyone living further down that axis can afford the "luxury" of 3 square meals and add toll to their budget.

I live on the mainland, but i sure dont subscribe to this. Let them express their grief!
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by TRUTHTELA: 9:35pm On Dec 17, 2011
People should have started all these DRAMA when they were constructing the TOLL PLAZA. But they never did. Everyone is busy with what I don't know, Now that its' time for collection, you want to fight with the mad SOLDIERS & MOPOL. If you can, goodluck!

Nigerians are funny people. there are many ways to BOYCOTT that TOLL without risking their lives in the hands of those trigger happy MOPOL. Are they ready for such? NO.
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by lovejo(m): 9:35pm On Dec 17, 2011
Even if there would be 2 toll gates there, the first one should be an access pint where your charge will start counting and the second one you will pay for the good road you have enjoy from the first toll gate to second tol gate, this is how it is done in advance world, you can't just charge people for what they did not use.

When did the rich come to Lekki.

Lekki has always being occupied by the poor and you can't send them away.

And there is no alternative route.

@ Juanny02, those people that can't afford the toll. Can they afford Govts LIBREALIZATION OF THE DOWNSTREAM SECTOR (SUBSIDY REMOVAL) ?? NO, and what will they do to show that govt policies is HARSH on them? They will head to their CHRUCHES & MOSQUES to pray for their leaders, rather than facing the MONSTER. It's not funny to hear of a PROTEST & you'll read that  someone as EVIL as Bode George that ruin Nigeria is LEADING a PROTEST. I will never support such a DRAMA.

Fasola claimed he reimbursed the contractor N4b for tolls not collected from August - Dec, 2010, that is average of N12b toll collection per year. If this LCC has 30 yrs concession, HOW MUCH IS THE COST OF BUILDING THIS ROAD?

Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by aloyemeka1: 9:46pm On Dec 17, 2011
Why not issue free toll passes to indigenes of those areas and low income residents who can prove to the state govt that they are truly low income earners?. Others can then pay the toll if they intend to drive through that road. I don't see the reason for the state govt to borrow money and build free roads for citizens who can afford to buy high end cars like Mercedes Benz and majority of them don't pay taxes anyway.
And they should use VAT system to tax those drivers. For example a 504 driver should pay less than a Lexus driver irrespective of the age of the vehicle.

Kinikini:

A protester’s account of Occupy Lekki Protest

My husband and I were there at the protest.  We are survivors.
It was a peaceful protest (chanting and singing protest songs.)  The heavily armed police men harrased, arrested some of the crowd un-necessarily and did all they could to disrupt the protest.  The next thing we knew was tear gas shot into the crowd of peaceful protesters.  The next assault came from hired thugs, ACN members.  They came in cars and buses and started beating up the crowd. People were running helter-skelter (including females) and some had to jump over the fence built by LCC and injured themselves in the process. My husband and I were amongst the lucky few to have left the scene a bit later than most others, we had to quickly remove the protest T-shirts and caps when we were chased and almost beaten by the thugs.  We had the opportunity on our way home, in our car to recognise the same thugs who harassed us, in their vehicles leaving the scene and branching off at Jakande bus-stop.  They had ACN banners in these vehicles. In fact, they were making a show of their thuggery from the Maruwa round about (where we sighted them) till they branched off at Jakande roundabout. Obviously hired thugs/members of the ACN party.
Majority (if not all) of those who participated in this protest are professionals who want to voice their opinion about the tolls and had NOTHING to do with politics.  Tax-payers who want to express their voice, the same way protests are being done around the world. It is a shame that the people who were not there, could say that the crowd of responsible people chanting and singing protests songs, could be agents of other political parties.
Our protest
For those who are not aware, LCC did not build the road.
They only expanded to three lanes from two (2).  They also seemingly beautified the area with pavements, streetlights that do not work beyond Lekki Phase 1.  LCC (poor job done actually) expanded the existing road built by Jakande and constructed pedestrian flyovers that are of inferior quality (nothing compared to what exists along the Ikorodu Road) and wants to collect tolls for the next thirty years at exorbitant rates.  To add insult to all these, they decided that not only are they collecting the tolls at a single point but THREE (3) within a 25km stretch. INCREDIBLE!!!  Alas, they decided that they were going to collect tolls before finishing the entire road work that had been concessioned to them.
Fashola claim that they need funds to carry out projects in other parts of Lagos and the concession of this axis is necessary in order to satisfy other parts of Lagos.  So the masses in this area should pay for the entire state when they also pay the same taxes that other people pay.
• The government built the Bourdillon road (very high quality by Julius Berger and not the inexperienced HiTech being used by LCC for poor quality jobs) and decided not to toll. WHY
• They built Igando road (Julius Berger again and very good quality) and decided not to toll.  WHY again?
• They beautified Ikeja and reconstructed parts of the roads in that axis and decided not to toll.  WHY again and again
My demands
• Do I get a tax rebate for the tolls paid for going to work, coming back home, taking my children to school, going to the hospital and going to the market?
• Why do I have to incur more costs than my contemporary who lives on the mainland because I was silly enough to build my house along this axis? Because this now amounts to stupidity, if I have to pay tolls, to go home.
REALITY
1 Apart from this so-called expansion on the road, what other government presence is there on this axis.  And yet this axis must pay for other part of the State.
2 How do you toll a cosmopolitan road that thousands of people ply, several times in a day, for 30 years.  All in the name that you spend billions of naira to construct the road. And expect that the people will take this without a pinch of salt.
3 If you start tolling now before completing the road, then we are already paying for the construction of the remaining part of the road work and then we should not be asked to pay at any other toll plaza again.
4 The government does not have money to construct, but the Head of the State Board of Internal Revenue (a civil servant) is so rich as to lavishly celebrate his daughter’s wedding for a stunning amount (obviously taxpayers money).  And he is getting away with obvious corruption when people are slaving to pay taxes to the Government. That is obviously acceptable to the powers that be, in the state.
5 My children will only remember tolls for their youthful lives. The question is WHY??

God bless u, i only wish the big churches around these toll point will hold their services on the road tomorrow, waiting for the day the church will start taking the matters of these nation beyond our comfort zone of gathering and really doing what we ought to be doing. getting involved

Upgrade, renovate , whatever they did, how much did it cost them. Why not share details of LCC contract with stakeholders?
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by TheOne2(m): 9:56pm On Dec 17, 2011
Me I have called officials of the LASG to offer them a middle ground that might be a way out of  this impasse but they seem to want to eat their cake and have it. My suggestion is hinged on 2 things. Firstly LASG seem to have themselves in a bind with this contract and cannot extricate themselves. Second is that most residents of the area actually pay a lot in taxes and should expect to have a free good road to their houses.
The middle point I think is for LASG to encourage the residents to register and use etags so that they can track their yearly usage and then claim it back as tax rebate at the end of the year. Where people challenge the suggestion is that what happens to those poor people that don't even earn enough to pay taxes but would be affected by the general increase in cost of living.
Anyways, I believe my suggestion could be a way out if the LASG wants to save face on this issue
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by lukkie(m): 10:00pm On Dec 17, 2011
I have come across many of these arrogant "if you can't afford it, move out of Lekki" or "my family can afford the toll so i can't risk my life" folks in the past few days.

Well, just remember that a society that does not take care of its poor cannot secure its rich.

It's the so-called poor people that you and your greedy Fashola/Tinubu capitalists condemn that will make life difficult for you (through armed robbery and the likes) by the time you privatize everything and take basic survival out of their reach.

Someone said it today that if it's possible, Fashola will make people pay for even breathing in Lagos, and for all he cares, Lagos can as well be sold to his silly private investors.
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by TRUTHTELA: 10:00pm On Dec 17, 2011
In London, I think there's something that they call CONGESTION TAX" or a form of TAX to  discourage people to from flooding the road with cars. Lekki residents can use BRT when going to work, cos majority of them work on the Island there, this can serve  as another form of BOYCOTT & to make sure that the projected revenue will not be realized.

One thing Y'all fail to realize is this Nigerian rulers are used to getting away with a whole lot of STUPID DECESIONS & POLICIES.

Truth be told, NIGERIANS ARE NOT THAT TYPE OF PEOPLE THAT QUESTION THEIR RULERS. IF THIS CULTURE OF PROTEST AND QUESTIONING RULERS POLICIES, THE LAGOS STATE GOVT. WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE ERCTING THAT TOLL. BETTER STILL THEY WILL CONSULT ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS TO KNOW HEAR THEIR OPINION. BUT THE CONSULTATION WAS AN AFTER THOUGHT.

PROTEST IS ALIEN TO NIGERIANS, HENCE, THIS SIMPLY A DRAMA THAT WILL DIE DOWN WITH TIME.

BODE GEORGE PROMISED TO LEAD THE PROTEST, and why did'nt he come out to lead? ask yourself why?

Lukkie, Nigerians lost it long time ago. Whatever that did not affect them directly is not their BUSINESS. Even the so called " POOR". Why is that every Nigerian that can afford a GENERATOR will go and buy it, rather than protest about LACK OF ELECTRICITY. If this protest was about LACK OF ELECTRICITY, Millions of this Lekki residents will not bother to participate, cos everyhouse that can afford it is running on a MIGHTY MIKANO GENERATOR. Toll gate is not different from any other govts bad policy, this protest?? Hmmmmm!
Re: Occupy Lekki: Lekki Toll Gate Protest-update by lovlin287(m): 10:12pm On Dec 17, 2011
The protest kicked off around 8am this morning with many concerned residence of lekki phase 1 protesting, the place was filled with all sought of uniform security men, meanwhile there had been arrested and was locked up in d van but was later released, when released there was an uproar of a 1st phased victory.
Then they proceeded to the toll gate itself which there was a traffic jam,but with the stupid mentality of tear gassim by the police, made the protesters run for their lives not having arrested some people fighting for their rights and being locked in the black maria,
Nta was there to cover this protest all way through.
God help Nigeria, its high time the masses talk up now or forever be silent.

Toll on a road that is only being upgraded without an optional route, na wa! Jakande who constructed the road and opened up the area didnt derive any personal benefit from it as far as i know, so why should latter day "repairers" become mercenaries to maximise their gains?

The write up referred to below is now making sense to me. One wonders why none of the other political parties is not cashing in on this brouhaha to drive ACN and PDP out of Lagos. Supporting Lekki residents and other oppressed people may place them on good footing towards 2015.

To think i wasted my energy queuing up to vote for an oppressor. Mschewww!!
