Business / Association Of Gencos Appoint Ayida As Chairman; Admits Owen Omogiafo Into Board by 91KeepInformed: 12:08pm On Jun 18, 2020
The Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) has announced the appointment of Mr. Omatseyin Akene Ayida as the Chairman, Board of Trustees, following the retirement of Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom from the Board, having completed his four years tenure in line with the Association’s governance charter. The announcement was made at the Association’s 3rd Annual General Meeting, which held on Wednesday, June 17, 2020.

Mr. Nnorom who represented Transcorp Power Limited on the Board of Trustees also stepped down as a member of the Board and has been replaced by the President/CEO of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp), Mrs. Owen Omogiafo.

In his remarks, Mr. Nnorom thanked the Association for the confidence reposed on him as Chairman Board of trustees and commented on the current state of the power sector noting the issue of liquidity arising from the debts owed GENCOs for power already generated, transmitted and consumed by Nigerians. He said, “As an association, there are immediate challenges we must tackle. For instance, we appreciate the recent improvement in payment by NBET of money owed us and ask that such improvement remains consistent while other outstanding legacy debt equally owed our members be paid to enable them meet funding obligations critical to their ability to stay operational”. During his tenure, he was instrumental in promoting the Association’s mandate of driving synergy and commercial viability within Nigeria’s power sector.

The new Chairman of the Board, Mr. Omatseyin Ayida, in responding to his appointment said “I appreciate the Board’s confidence in choosing me to lead our Association after the exemplary work done by Mr. Nnorom. I thank him for his leadership, vision, and tenacity as my appointment showcases the strong corporate governance culture we have as an association. I will build on his successes and maintain our members’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development by generating much-needed power for the country.” He called on the appropriate authorities/stakeholders to ensure improvements in the transmission and distribution infrastructure in the country, so as to enhance increased dispatch and evacuation of power generated, which will bring about improved supply to Nigerians.

Omatseyin Ayida is a member of the Board of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (“MESL”) – concessionaire of Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power Plants and was nominated to represent MESL as a member of the Board of Trustees of the APGC in 2018. He has a wealth of experience at Board and Management levels in Energy, Financial Markets, Strategy, and Risk Management. He is currently the Managing Director of Saken Capital Partners Limited, having served as the Managing Director of Ruyat Oil Limited previously.

Followed the AGM and it is safe to assert that the Lion King of Africa, Tony Elumelu, and his team at Transcorp are doing something right.
Business / Transcorp Group CEO, Owen Omogiafo Unveils New Strategic Vision of The Company by 91KeepInformed: 10:38pm On Apr 29, 2020
Shareholders of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp) have congratulated the Board and management for the resilient performance achieved in 2019, despite the challenging environment. They welcomed the diversified earnings provided by the Group, Nigeria’s leading listed conglomerate, the largest power generator in Nigeria, operator of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest hotel and a growing natural resources player.

Transcorp held its 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) online, due to the Covid19 pandemic, a corporate first in Nigeria. Shareholders participated in the meeting through proxies and a total of 129 proxies representing holders of 21,450,062,121 ordinary shares of the company voted on the resolutions proposed by the directors to the shareholders.

The President/Group CEO of Transcorp, Owen Omogiafo set out her strategic ambition, whilst also committing to safeguard shareholder interests by ensuring improved dividends. Mrs. Omogiafo who was recently appointed as the Group CEO with a team of subsidiary CEOs, stated that the new management team is dedicated to delivering and exceeding the strategic objectives of the Company, rooted in its founding vision and expressed in its corporate purpose of ‘Improving Lives, Transforming Nigeria’. She went on to say “in Hospitality, we will deepen and expand our market share by deploying an asset light strategy, leveraging best in class technology and continuously drive the highest service standards. In Power, we target completing the ongoing transaction for the 100% acquisition of another power plant in the gas rich Niger Delta Region of Nigeria – Afam Genco, this year. This will enhance our play in the power space, with increased generation capacity, revenue and profitability. Our drive to diversify our energy mix will also continue, with a focus on renewable energy and off grid solutions. We will continue to monitor developments in the oil and gas space, while making the best decisions in the interest of the company and its shareholders regarding the development of our oil and gas asset, OPL 281. Working with the MD/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc, Dupe Olusola and the MD/CEO, Transcorp Power Ltd, Chris Ezeafulukwe, and all our highly committed staff and partners, we are well positioned as a group to continue to deliver great value for our shareholders”.

In his address to the shareholders, the Chairman, Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc, Tony O. Elumelu, CON, commended the efforts of the government in combatting the scourge of COVID 19 and reiterated the importance of synergy between the private sector and government, in stemming the spread of the global pandemic. “I’ve often said that our commitment to improving lives and transforming Nigeria is a lifelong one. Those words are truer today than ever, as we partner with State and Federal authorities to stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic, while our businesses seek to cushion its impact for Nigerians in their course of operation.”

The meeting was the first full virtual AGM to be held by any listed company on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Shareholders viewed the decision to hold the AGM virtually, as a demonstration of the proactiveness of the company, efficiently and effectively channeling company resources. The Chairman, Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Boniface Okezie said in his comments during the meeting, “This virtual AGM - the first of its kind for a publicly listed company in Nigeria, reflects the level of innovation and technology adoption in our company. This is truly exciting!”

Transcorp achieved a turnover of ₦76.35bn and profit before tax of N7.90bn in the year under review. Revenue from its power business, Transcorp Power Limited declined during the period, reflecting acute gas supply issues, transmission challenges, delay in debt payment by government and continuing structural impediments in the sector. The company’s hospitality business, Transcorp Hotels Plc, on the other hand, grew its year-on-year revenue by 17% and gross profit increased by 19%, compared to FY 2018.

Mrs. Omogiafo concluded by highlighting that despite current challenges brought on by the global pandemic, the underlining strength of the Group’s businesses, the quality of its assets, its position as the leading Nigerian electricity producer, the proud owner of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, the hospitality gateway to Nigeria and its growing strength as an effective natural resources player, should give shareholders great confidence in the Group’s future. She thanked staff and management particularly for their dedication during the recent lockdown.

Crime / How Ibadan Woman Defrauds Bank Customers With Fake Prophecies by 91KeepInformed: 8:25am On Nov 11, 2016
A woman, Biola Simon, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly defrauding bank customers after giving them fake prophecies in the Dopemu area.

Our correspondent learnt that Simon, who came from Ibadan, Oyo State, was arrested on Thursday by the Dopemu Police Division, after one of her victims reported her to the police.
While the suspect was arrested, it was learnt that other suspected accomplices fled.

Our correspondent gathered that a sum of N150,000, which the woman had allegedly swindled out from her victim, was recovered by the policemen after the arrest.

A police source at the Dopemu division said Simon belonged to a four-member syndicate that specialised in defrauding unsuspecting bank customers in the area through fake prophecies.

He said, “In her statement, she confessed that the syndicate’s mode of operation was to lurk around bank premises, while her role was to accost a bank customer suspected to be with money.

“The suspect explained that she would pretend that she was new in Lagos and asked for direction from the victim. Simon would subsequently make shocking spiritual revelations about her victim, after which she would advise that a special prayer must be offered for the victim.

“The next move was to take the victim to a nearby place where the three other accomplices were waiting and they would replace the money withdrawn by the victim with disposable papers, covered with a few naira notes.

“A man who the suspect tried to swindle on Thursday of N150,000 raised the alarm, and a police patrol team in the area apprehended Simon.”

A witness, Rafiu Jimoh, said the policemen had returned the money to the victim.

He said, “The woman dressed responsibly, but she usually begged targeted customers coming out of the bank to direct her to an address. She is believed to use magical powers, as she will thereafter start giving revelations about her victim, luring the person to go for prayers with her.

“While the purported prayer is going on by the syndicate, the contents of the victim’s bag or purse will be replaced with papers covered with a few real notes. They will thereafter disappear with the money.

“The woman was arrested on Thursday by a police patrol team, but the three others escaped in a car. The stolen N150,000 was recovered and returned to the victim.”

Crime / The Death Of My Son By Accidental Discharge Is A Major Relief, Says Mother by 91KeepInformed: 8:14am On Nov 11, 2016
A vigilance group commander in the Oke Aro area of Ogun State, Quadri Adesina, has been arrested by the police after an alleged accidental discharge from his gun killed a 23-year-old man, Yusuf Azeez.
Azeez reportedly wanted to wrest the gun from the suspect when a bullet hit him in the thigh. He was rushed to a hospital in the area, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
.
.
Our correspondents learnt that the deceased’s mother, 42-year-old Toyin Akintayo, had invited Adesina and his colleagues to her residence on CAC Street, Oke Aro, around 8pm on Tuesday to apprehend Azeez, who allegedly threatened to kill her.
.
.
It was gathered that Azeez had arrived at home on that day at about 6pm and requested his dinner. The mother was said to have explained to him that she didn’t have enough money to prepare a meal.
.
.
Trouble started after the mother, who sells confectionery, gave him N200 to buy food, saying that was all she could afford. He reportedly smashed a bottle on the ground and vowed to kill her.
.
.
The mother said, “I wanted to break my fast on that day with garri when he arrived at home. I said there was no kerosene in the stove to prepare food for him and his younger brother. I gave him N200 and the brother N70. He said the N200 was small and threw it at me.
.
“I explained to him that it was all I had and that we wouldn’t have been in the situation if he did not steal the compressor of my freezer, which I used to sell ice blocks. I also advised him to find a job. He became angry and started threatening me with a knife and the shard of a bottle. He said he would not allow me to sleep at home that night and vowed to kill me.
.
.
“I sneaked out to call members of a vigilance group beside our house. They followed me home and tried to pacify him. He fought them and fought for the control of a gun that one of them carried. The gun exploded in the process and he was injured in the thigh. He died at a hospital near here.”
.
.
Akintayo described her son’s death as a relief to her, saying she could no longer endure the shame his notoriety for “stealing and street fighting” had brought to the family.
.
She added that his son’s gang members stormed her house on Wednesday and threatened that she would pay for Azeez’s death.
She said, “I enrolled him in three different secondary schools, he dropped out. I took him to five different furniture experts to learn the work, he absconded. He went into barbing; I gave him N85,000 to rent a shop and furnished it for him. He didn’t go to the shop until the rent expired.
.
.
“His death is a relief to me and the family. He was too troublesome. There was a time he beat up an Oodua Peoples Cogress member while we were living in Idimu (Lagos). I spent a lot of money on the man’s treatment.

“A few weeks ago, he fought in Agege. He was seriously injured. He had been arrested many times by the police for several offences.”

Education / UNIOSUN Sacks Olabode Ojoniyi, Lecturer Involved In Sex Video by 91KeepInformed: 7:24am On Nov 07, 2016
The Governing Council of the Osun State University, Osogbo, has terminated the appointment of Dr. Olabode Ojoniyi of the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Ikire Campus, caught on video having an amorous relationship with one of his students, Mercy Ikwue.

Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the Governing Council headed by Mallam Yusuf Ali SAN, sacked the lecturer, who appeared nude on a bed in a hotel room and caressing Miss Ikwue.

A member of the Governing Council confirmed the sacking of Ojoniyi to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday.

He said, “The Council met last week and the report of the panel that investigated Ojoniyi’s amorous affair with the female student was deliberated upon. His appointment was terminated because that is the penalty stated in the Code of Conduct of Staff of Osun State University.”

Apart from the member of the Governing Council, three other lecturers including two professors confirmed to our correspondent that Ojoniyi had been sacked.

Part II articles 15 and 23 of the Code of Conduct for Staff and Students of UNIOSUN read, “ An academic staff shall not conduct himself/ herself in relation to students in such a manner that derogates from his status as a lecturer, examiner and adviser. Specifically, sexual harassment of students by (members of) staff is totally forbidden. Any (member of) staff found guilty of sexual harassment shall be dismissed from the service of the university and may be handed over to relevant state authority for prosecution.

“An academic (member of) staff shall not demand from students any gratification whether in cash or in kind including sexual gratification in the discharge of his/her lawful duties. Breach of this code shall warrant appropriate sanction ranging from warning to termination of appointment depending on the gravity of the offence.”

Ojoniyi’s sex act was captured in a video which is believed to have been surreptitiously recorded by the female student.

The female student was said to have been pressurised by Ojoniyi for sex and she eventually agreed and followed him to their agreed place with a laptop computer from which she pretended to be watching a movie, Things Fall Apart. Unknown to him, Miss Ikwue was actually recording their sexual activities.

Ojoniyi had accused one of the lecturers of the university, who was recently dismissed for an alleged misconduct as the person behind the drama. According to him, the lady was contracted to blackmail him. But Ojoniyi did not deny being the one in the video.

The video clip went viral afterwards and Ojoniyi, when contacted by our correspondent did not deny that he was the one in the video and did not say his image was manipulated. He only blamed his detractors for the incident.

Politics / Ambode Is Exceeding Expectations –PDP by 91KeepInformed: 7:17am On Nov 01, 2016
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has lauded what it termed the outstanding performance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

The spokesman for the opposition PDP chapter, Taofik Gani, said in a statement on Monday, that Ambode had taken government’s presence to many areas in the state allegedly abandoned for eight years by his predecessor, Babatunde Fashola.

The PDP advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of Fashola, who, it said, had a penchant for making unverifiable claims of achievements.

The opposition party also expressed reservation over Buhari’s decision to give three ministerial portfolios relating to engineering to Fashola, who is a lawyer.

The PDP berated Fashola for celebrating a proposed injection of 30 megawatts into the national grid, when, according to the PDP, the minister had been provided with resources enough to inject over 500 megawatts into it.

Gani said instead of celebrating, Fashola should have been sober for allegedly mismanaging the country’s power generation from “6000MW when he took over to now less than 2000MW.”

He said, “We sincerely advise President Buhari to be very wary of the deceptive skills of Fashola who will usually hype and celebrate even mediocrity.

“Fashola has a penchant for misrepresenting facts of his achievements in government and would always rationalise obvious inadequacies.”

“As governor of Lagos State, he enjoyed unprecedented revenues and donations, yet he left many services untouched or unfinished. He, however, deliberately funded his pro-Fashola media and commentators so much that pseudo and exaggerated achievements were ascribed to him.

“He employed this model to promote his eight years government of mediocrity. Fashola ended up making Lagos State the biggest debtor with local and foreign debts well over N1trn.”

Health / Why Nigerian Hospitals Are Without Functional Machines To Treat Cancer- ADEWOLE by 91KeepInformed: 1:45am On Oct 29, 2016
Isaac Adewole, minister of health, says the there is no hospital in the country that has a functional cancer treating machine.

Adewole made the shocking discovery in an interview with NAN.

He disclosed that out of the 200 which Nigeria requires, only seven were available, but none is in order.

“As we are talking today, there is no public hospital in Nigeria that has cancer treatment machine that is working,” he said.

“Ideally, we need one machine per one million people. Going by that, Nigeria should have about 200 cancer treatment machines. We have seven, but none of the seven machines is working today.

“But in the 2017 budget, we will ensure that each of the seven centres has two machines which means one will be a backup.

“We will upgrade Maiduguri, Zaria, Ilorin, the National Hospital, Abuja, Ibadan, Benin and Enugu in the first phase.

“We are likely to get a private sector organisation to help with the National Hospital; in fact we may sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this month.

“If we take National Hospital out, we will go to Sokoto. Gombe is waiting. Jos will be in the second round. I got a grant some years back to set up six centres of excellence.

“I put one in Jos, and I can tell you that Jos is one of the best. They have done better than Ibadan. The government is committed to making sure that we have the facilities to handle cancer cases.”

He said government had developed special interest in breast and cervical, which has been ravaging Nigerians.

Adewole revealed that a national cancer plan by a committee that would be chaired by him would review the issue of facilities.

He also emphasised the importance of early detention in the treatment of cancer.

“Due to my interest in cancer, the cancer burden is of concern to me,” he said.

The first thing we want to do is to revise the National Cancer Plan. We are also setting up a steering committee, which I will also chair.

Crime / HOW I Sustained My Unemployed Friends With Proceeds From Kidnapping- Suspect by 91KeepInformed: 1:37am On Oct 29, 2016
In the last three months, Gadilo Agbajo, an Arogbo, Ondo State indigene, has been involved in three kidnaps, which netted the gang he led N14.8m in total.

But when Agbajo and eight other members of the gang were brought before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters following their arrest, the explanation he gave for his life of crime surprised many.

According to Agbajo, whom the gang members said was responsible for sharing the ransom money in the bush anytime the families of their victims paid, he was not a selfish criminal.

Agbajo explained that he used his criminal activities to help his friends.

“When some of my people who did not have job could not pay their house rents, they came to meet me for help.

“I normally told them that they should not worry and that I would find a way to help them and they could help me as well. My way of helping them is getting them involved in the kidnapping business rather than for them to roam the streets without work.”

In July 2016, Saturday PUNCH learnt that Agbajo’s gang kidnapped a pastor of a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God at Santos bus stop in Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, Olukayode Bajomo, on a Sunday morning just before the weekly service.

A witness of the abduction said the kidnappers wore attractive clothes as if they had come for the church service.

The witness said, “The pastor came earlier around 7am to prepare for a workers’ meeting. The shocking thing was that the men walked in quietly like new members.

“They dressed like people who had come to church. They had Bibles with them. They did not shoot or display any weapon. It was when they got to the pastor that they brought out their guns and ordered him to come with them.”

The gang also kidnapped Otunba Lateef Ogunfowora, who owns Lat Ogun Petroleum in Ijebu Ode.

Agbajo said, “When I was introduced to kidnapping by Blessing Bamidele, the first person we kidnapped was a white man. After that, Bamidele always called me anytime he had an operation.

“We later kidnapped a man in Ijebu Ode, one at Epe and another at Gberigbe side. We got N6m from one, N5m from another and N3.8m from the third victim.

A suspect, Fidelis Ogabor, said he was compelled to join the group as a precondition for a N200,000 business loan he needed to set up a hair salon.

He stated that he lost his job as a supervisor in a factory and approached one William for assistance, but the latter insisted that he would help him only if he became a member of Norsemen.

The police in Lagos State have arrested a man, identified only as Nathaniel, for allegedly drugging and raping his 14-year-old housemaid in the Ikotun area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Nathaniel, who stayed on Ajisegiri Street, in the Egbe area, was arrested by the Ikotun Police Division on Sunday.

Crime / Read How 60-year-old Driver Enticed And Raped Mental Patient With N 200 by 91KeepInformed: 6:57am On Oct 17, 2016
There was chaos at Iya Abiodun bus stop, Ifo, Ogun State, after a security guard, Abdullahi Muhammed, caught a 60-year-old trailer driver, Lawal Bankole, allegedly having sex with his wife, Tope, on their matrimonial bed.

Abdullahi, 45, an indigene of Kano State, told our correspondent that Bankole took advantage of his wife’s mental “condition to rape her.”

He said his wife’s mental problem started before he met her.

He said, “My wife has mental problem, which started during her first marriage. She had a surgery that time, but there was a complication which led to the problem. Her ex-husband rejected her, saying he could not live with a mentally-ill person.

“Her family had taken her to different prayer houses for solution to no avail before I came into the picture. I assisted them with money and they decided to hand her over to me in marriage.

“I made sure she stayed indoors always. All she does is to cook and wash my clothes. However, once in a month, she goes to visit her mother and returns. We have a child together, who is about two years old. Her condition is improving, but she is not totally sound yet.”

He explained that on Tuesday, he had returned from a trip to Lagos Island to meet Bankole on top of his wife.

He said, “I had returned from my trip when I met him on top of my wife. I had a cutlass and a knife at home and I wanted to kill him. But I had a rethink and I decided to hold him.

“But he tore my clothes and bit me. He fought me and took hold of the cutlass; I held him. We were fighting when people separated us and he escaped.

“However, I held on to his trousers, which contained his driving licence, some cash, phones and ATM cards. I used the items as my evidence. I reported the matter at the police station after which he was arrested.”

The wife, 24-year-old Tope, an indigene of Osun State, told our correspondent that the suspect gave her N200.

She said, “I have never met the man before. That day, he entered our compound and asked if I wanted to eat and I said yes. He gave me N200 and went away.

“He later returned and asked me to UnCloth and I did. He put me on the bed and had sex with me. I knew he wasn’t my husband, but I couldn’t shout or do anything. Then my husband entered and caught him.

“The two men started fighting. I ran downstairs to call people. Our neighbours separated them.”

A human rights lawyer, Isaac Durowoju, said the accused had been boasting that nothing would happen to him, adding that the Investigating Police Officer had not treated the case with the seriousness it deserved.

He said, “The woman’s husband has refused mediation because he was not sure if the suspect has HIV or not. He also said in his culture, if any man makes love to another person’s wife, that woman from that point ceases to be his wife. But he said he could not abandon his wife because of her mental condition. And finally, how is he sure that the suspect is not diabolical?”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect would be charged to court.

He said, “The police have arrested the man and he has confessed to the crime. He took advantage of the woman’s mental condition. He will be arraigned in court.”

Crime / Policeman Escorts Robbery Suspects To Sell Loot by 91KeepInformed: 6:58am On Oct 10, 2016
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two members of a robbery gang for allegedly attacking a polythene producing company in Alibaba, in the Isashi area of the state, stealing a raw material evaluated at N6.4m.

The suspects are 42-year-old Moruf Afolabi and one Saheed Adeoti, a new worker of the company.

A policeman, identified simply as Tunde, aka Agbo, reportedly escorted a truck containing 220 bags of the stolen raw material to the Mangoro area of the state, where they were sold.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were arrested sometime in September 2016, three weeks after they attacked the company, Alphabet Packaging Nigeria Limited.

It was learnt that the gang members had gone to the company around 7am on Sunday, August 14, and told a security guard at the gate that they were directed by the manager to collect the raw material.

The guard reportedly insisted that they called the manager on the phone so he could confirm the directive.

When the robbers realised their ploy would not work, they reportedly resorted to force.

“One of the suspects pretended that he wanted to use the toilet on the premises. The guard allowed him in and the rest of them forcefully gained access into the company. They tied the guard with a rope, sealed his mouth and put him in a room while they looted the store where the raw material was. They stole 220 bags and packed them in a truck.

“The case was reported at the Isashi Police Division and was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the state command in Ikeja. The information we gathered showed that one Tunde, whom one of the suspects identified as a policeman, escorted the truck to where the chemical was sold. But investigation revealed that the said policeman was not aware it was stolen,” a police source said.

Afolabi, who hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State, told the police that he was invited for the operation by Adeoti, adding that he knew Tunde as a policeman in the Aboru area of the state.

He said, “Saheed (Adeoti) and I had earlier worked together at a nylon making company. I know Tunde at Aboru. He is a policeman and I have seen him in police uniform. On that day, Saheed called me on the phone and said I should meet him at Joju bus stop, Sango Ota. When I got there, he told me to follow him to steal Idorama nylon chemical, and I did.”

Adeoti, 25, a native of Ayetoro, Ogun State, said they sold the chemical to a businessman who had a shop at the Mangoro area of Lagos, adding that he got N1.2m from the proceeds.

“We took the stolen chemical to Mangoro and sold each bag for N24,000 to a man called Ibeh. He knew we stole the chemical. Maruf and I got N1.2m each and we gave the driver that drove the truck N40,000. This is my first time of doing this kind of business,” he said.

A police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, arraigned the duo before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on Friday on two counts of armed robbery.

The charge read in part, “That you, Saheed Adeoti, Maruf Afolabi, and others at large, on August 14, 2016, at about 7am at Alphabet Packaging Nigeria Limited on Mayila Street, Anibaba, Isashi, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, while armed with sticks, did tie the security man, Lanre Ladoja, with a rope, and forced a piece of cloth into his mouth and rob 220 bags of Indorama polythene nylon making material valued at N6.4m, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”

Crime / Lagos Schoolboy Sick In Kidnappers Den by 91KeepInformed: 6:50am On Oct 10, 2016
One of the four pupils of the Lagos Junior Model College, Igbonla, Epe, Lagos State, who were abducted by gunmen last Thursday, has fallen sick.

A source close to the family of the affected schoolboy told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that the kidnappers, however, assured the parents that they had administered treatment to him.

Our correspondent gathered that negotiations on the ransom were in progress as the victims’ families were running around to raise the sums demanded by the gang.

PUNCH Metro had reported that the attackers, comprising five men and a woman, at about 8am on Thursday, stormed the school and abducted four pupils, a teacher and a vice-principal.

The victims, who were reportedly rounding off prayers at the assembly hall, were taken away by the abductors, who shot sporadically into the air.

The pupils, identified as Isaac Adebisi, Okonkwo Emmanuel, Abu and Jeremiah; the English Language/Civic Education teacher, Lukman Oyerinde, and the Vice-Principal, A.O. Oyesola, were taken away in a speedboat.

It was reported that the kidnappers, who called a parent of one of the schoolboys, demanded N30m for the victims, requesting N5m for each of the six.

Our sources learnt on Sunday that one of the schoolboys had fallen ill. The family members reportedly pleaded that the gang should collect the amount raised so far and let go of him.

The source said, “The men called on Saturday and Sunday and told us that one of the boys was sick. They said his temperature was high. They called one of the relations of the pupil and wanted to know the drug they could use for him. We have been begging them to let go of the pupil.

“But they assured the family that they had arranged someone to treat him. On the negotiation of ransom, the family members are begging them to reduce the N5m ransom. But the kidnappers have yet to agree.

“One of the parents is begging for N1m, but the gunmen want them to add a little more. The sick boy is suspected to have malaria, although no test can be conducted in the hideout to ascertain that.”

Another relation of one of the abducted boys, who spoke with our sources on Sunday, said they would hold another meeting with the school authorities today (Monday), as the kidnappers had called to reduce the ransom to N3.5m.

The source added that the kidnappers kept on assuring the families that their children were in safe hands.

“We will meet with the school authorities on Monday. They (the kidnappers) called in on Sunday and asked for N3.5m. We still begged them to go lower than that,” he added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said on Sunday that rescue mission was ongoing.

“All the escape routes of the abductors have been blocked. Rescue mission is still ongoing,” sh

Politics / We’re Missing Jonathan –ebonyi Traders by 91KeepInformed: 6:55am On Oct 07, 2016
Almost one and a half years after former President Goodluck Jonathan left office, his 2015 campaign posters are still displayed in markets in Ebonyi State, including the over 70-year-old Abakaliki main market.

Speaking to our correspondent on Thursday, one of the traders, Celestine Chikodiri, said the traders resolved to retain the posters as a show of love for the former President.

He said, “We like the way Jonathan ruled us; his government was good, we like the Jonathan administration more than the present government and it is why we decided to leave the posters in the market because we are missing him.

“If you look around the market, you will not see campaign posters of any presidential candidate other than Jonathan’s own.

“The Jonathan administration will not be easily forgotten; things were moving smoothly, our businesses were flourishing, civil and public servants were patronising us,’’ he said.

Chikodiri described Jonathan as a true democrat for conceding defeat at the presidential election which he said was another reason the traders allowed his campaign posters to still remain in the market and called on politicians to emulate him.

Crime / Behold The Miraculous Cross With An Healing Power That Suddenly Appeared In Lafi by 91KeepInformed: 7:36am On Oct 05, 2016
Mr Danjuma Joseph has taken to his facebook page to recount an interesting experience of how a cross suddenly appeared in Lafia in Nassarawa state. He wrote....
.
This miraculous CROSS suddenly appeared in Assakio, headquarters of Lafia East Development Area of Nasarawa State, since on Wednesday, 28th September, 2016 and people kept trooping-in to see the hand of God at work.
.
A woman was healed of her three years sickness when she prayed there and so many things kept on happening since this development took place.
.
The good thing about it is that, the discovery was made by a non-Christian lady, who saw it and kept it to her self for some hours, but the spirit couldn't allow her sleep that night, so she came out and told people.
.
Another spectacular misery about the miraculous CROSS is that it appeared near a Mosque (there's nothing God cannot do).
It rained like never before on the night of Thursday, for over five hours and when people rushed the following morning to see if the CROSS was washed away, to their greatest imagination, it appeared more clearer. God is good.

Crime / READ How Fiance's Miserliness Led To Woman's Death By Electrocution In Igando by 91KeepInformed: 7:00am On Oct 05, 2016
A 35-year-old woman, Loretta Ewere, has been electrocuted at her fiance’s home on Ajoke Kazeem Street in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

Our sources learnt that Ewere’s fiancé, Segun Tolani, was fixing an electrical fault when the incident happened.

She was said to have been rushed to a private hospital in the area but was rejected before being confirmed dead at the Igando General Hospital.

Our correspondent, who visited the area on Tuesday, gathered that Ewere and Tolani had scheduled their wedding for November and preparation was in top gear when tragedy struck.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the incident happened around 1pm on Saturday, adding that it created chaos in the neighbourhood.

He said, “The man had wanted to change his old cable TV decoder and antenna. When power was restored, he discovered that he didn’t have electricity in his house.

“He wanted to do it himself, but neighbours advised him to get the service of an electrician. He contacted an electrician who billed him N2,500. But he said the charge was too high. He decided to go and rent a wooden ladder from someone in the area.

“He mounted the ladder on the wall and called the lady from inside the room to assist him in holding the ladder. She held the ladder with one hand and held an iron pole beside the room with the other hand.

“While he was working, the wire fell and touched the pole she was holding and that was how she was electrocuted.”

Our sources learnt that Tolani called for help from a next-door neighbour, whose wife reportedly rushed to the scene to pull out the victim with her bare hands.

She was reportedly flung by the electric current.

An electrician was said to have been invited, who then disconnected the power.

“The woman fell down and hit her head against the concrete floor. People tried to resuscitate her by giving her milk; but she didn’t come round. A lot of time had been wasted. She was rushed to a private hospital in the area, but she was rejected.

“We took her to the general hospital, where she was confirmed dead. Her corpse was deposited in a mortuary,” another resident said.

Our sources gathered that Ewere, an indigene of Ewuru, Delta State, worked in Union Diagnostics, a medical lab in Ikeja, while Tolani, who hails from Ekiti State, worked with an insurance company.

When our correspondent visited the victim’s family house on Ogidan Street, Idimu, they said the family was too distraught to talk about the incident.

However, a relative, who identified himself simply as Charles, blamed the incident on Tolani’s stinginess.

He explained that the duo had been living together for the past four years, adding that the two families had started preparation for their wedding.

He said, “They did their introduction four years ago and since then, they had been staying together. Their marriage was slated for November and the two families have bought clothes and sent invitation to people.

“Around 1pm of the day that she died, she called one of her friends that she would be going to shop for the wedding, not knowing that she would die that day.

“It was the man’s stinginess that killed her. If he had paid someone to fix the electrical fault, this would not have happened.”
