In their field, they know the mentality of the average Nigerian when it comes to things like this.

When you see Ahlu Sunnah (Muslims with shortened trousers that Christians and others call Tablig) perform exorcism and you hear the patients say different things, the experience is quite baffling.

It's until you read wider and broaden your life scope you'll realize what they say is nothing special. It's pure psychology.

More or less like hypnosis.

If someone has a "scary" dream where they eat in the dream or see any other frightening things in the dream, and they meet their cleric who tells them it's due to a demonic attack and such a person believes them, any effects they tell the individual the dream causes will manifest in their life.

So, they act like a possessed person when they recite Quranic verses into their ears, saying incoherent things (like those charlatans performing an act of glossolia, speaking in tongue); sometimes, divulging secrets or sensitive information their family members kept with them.

It's not the demon that's working but their belief and the trust they've in Allah and especially the cleric.

That's why exorcism won't work on a person that doesn't believe in Qur'an or Allah or trust the cleric. That's even one of the criteria to perform ruqyah on a patient (having belief in Allah and Qur'an's healing power).

Without that trust or belief, one billion kursiy (known as the most powerful verse in Qur'an) won't have any effect on that person.

Showing it's all psychological.

When a person has such dreams, they only need to agree with the cleric that they're possessed by a demon. Once they do, they'll start acting in that manner.

Then all the evil effects of the demonic possession (according to what the clerics say) will start manifesting in their life.

And it gets worse for them, if they read those books I stated earlier, where the author lists out symptoms and signs of different demonic possession.

These signs include the following:
1. Eating in the dream
2. Pain in the head (such as migraine headache)
3. Depression
4. Sleep paralysis
4. Forgetfulness
5. Love for solitude (being alone)
6. Irregular menstrual cycle for females.
7. Paranoia
8. A feeling of emptiness
9. Having sex in the dream

Now, many people around the world would have experienced at least 2 of these things in varying forms at some point in their life. They (signs and symptoms) are that common.

By the time you study the signs and symptoms of demonic possession in the literature above, one will feel demonic possession is a very common phenomena around the world.

In fact, during my experience with exorcists then as a Muslim, I used to feel many of my course mates were possessed then because I could observe some of these signs in them.

But it's a wrong notion.

Most people usually fall into the trap of these alfas when they eat in the dreams, get chased by ghosts/masquerades in the dreams, when they see or hear things.

Some of those (outlined) things are signs of depression (best treated medically). When you see a dead relative in the dream, it doesn't mean you're about to die as some believe.

Those kinds of dreams are very common around the world when people just lost someone or miss their dead relatives.

Most dreams are products of what we think a few minutes before we go to sleep. That's a fact.

Dealing with dreams requires wisdom. Some people can see future things in their dreams.

People have different gifts and talents.

When a person is sure they have such a gift (where a number of their dreams come to pass), I think it's wiser they learn to document their dreams, see how they can learn from them, and avoid narrating bad dreams they've concerning people.

However, many usually interpret dreams literally, which could make them fall into the traps of deceitful clerics and priests.

Generally, mental illnesses or brain tumor/cancer (also thought to be caused by demonic attack by some people) is best treated medically. When people take the spiritual route first, they could waste years seeking a cure that doesn't exist in religious houses; that could worsen the issue and complicate things by the time they later go to a hospital.

I have stated my stance of this issue a number of times. There are many types of juju. You didn't specify any.

IMO, many claims of juju are fake. A number of them are real but scientific understanding about the principle behind them is poor.

For instance, it's possible scientists will be able to design a device for things like teleportation (egbe in Yoruba) in the future, one of the feats which our forefathers could do in this part of the world in ancient times, according to history.

At least, there is already a theoretical basis for it, and some scientists have been working on that concept for many years. No breakthroughs yet.

Popular atheist and scientist Stephen Hawking (late) even discussed the current progress on the concept in his book, "a Brief History of Time".

Perhaps, when scientists get more understanding about the concepts of space and time, significant progress will be made.

Any genuine mysterious/spiritual/supernatural stuff will become normal things in the future. That's my own stance, and if you're familiar with the history of science and the history of humanity, you'll understand why I said so.

If a supernatural feat is genuine, its proponents should try to subject it to scientific scrutiny and see how it can be of benefit to the world. But approaching it superstitiously and as something that can't be deeply researched has always been my own grouse.

That attitude is a huge bane to scientific research and progress about things in Africa.

Anything can be researched given the right tools.
