RomanceRe: MRM Vs Feminism by 99cent: 1:40am On Oct 16, 2013
Wu Zetian: They are very vocal, they are just relatively new(compared to feminism) and non-existing in countries like Nigeria.

MRM will be pointless in Nigeria because Nigeria has no real implementation laws protecting women. Nigerian women do not enjoy any of the benefits listed except circumcision.
lol MRM is a fringe group in the USA. but it is very much mainstream in Nigeria.
like organic food movement in USA. we don't have a concept of organic food because most foods in Nigeria are already organic.
just like that, most men in Nigeria are very sexist. so talking about MRM doesn't make sense. extremely sexist men are majority in Nigeria, not a minority. what rights do they need?
RomanceRe: MRM Vs Feminism by 99cent: 1:33am On Oct 16, 2013
nipeks001: Na wa o,u carry this matter for head gan o .@topic,I guess mrm are not hated coz they are not selfish and illogical with their agenda. My msg to all feminist:EARN EQUALITY,DON'T ASK FOR IT.
this is the same message racist whites give to blacks who seek equality.
the similarity in racism and sexism is very salient.
now you understand how whites felt in South Africa against the blacks who were 'asking' for rights.
RomanceRe: MRM Vs Feminism by 99cent: 1:30am On Oct 16, 2013
The MRM in the USA are seen as a hate group. similar to the KKK or racists.
Comparing MRM to feminism is like comparing blacks in South Africa to whites during apartheid. it is very obvious who wields the power and who is subordinate.
Actually, talking about gender rights is a good way to sympathize with racist whites and how they feel about losing power to blacks. because most men who hate feminism must feel exactly the same way.
when you have been on top for so long. it is painful to relinquish that power and allow others to be at the same level as you.
how dare those domestic appendages (in Wole Soyinka's words) called women have any rights or influence.
FashionRe: How To Grow Nigerian Hair Long: My Hair Journey by 99cent:
Nice thread. I love your hair.

I agree that black hair can grow long but I don't agree with the comparison to Asians, Brazilians and Caucasians. If these people followed your regimen, they will have hair almost down to their feet! Their hair just grows naturally fast even when they treat it poorly. it takes them less than 2 yrs to get their hair to ur length with very minimal care. just shampoo and condition. And their ponytail will look even thicker and shinier to boot.

Let's all just admit that most blacks or Africans have a hair texture that's difficult to maintain and grow long. It CAN grow long but the effort and time isn't worth it for most people. What tribe are you from? Even among west Africans, there is some diversity and variety in hair textures such that some people are able to grow their hair more effortlessly ex. fulani vs yoruba/igbo.

Overall, I think that with our hair texture, the best or most efficient state for us to wear our hair is medium/short. But due to the society that we live in that values western ways of beauty ie long, straight hair, we are all putting ourselves through a lot of pain and trouble to conform to these standards that will always elude us.

PoliticsRe: Should Our Country Cease To Exist After 2015, What Would You Miss About Nigeria? by 99cent: 8:10pm On Oct 06, 2013
Kingsley1000: I will miss super eagles.........Sports....is the only thing that unites Nigeria
this is the only comment that makes sense.
"Nigeria" is just a concept. If Nigeria ceases to exist tomorrow, nothing much will change. seriously.
the only things that will change are those that carry the "Nigerian" emblem and flag like super eagles etc, name of government, national anthem etc.
everything else including corruption, lack of infrastructure, poor leadership, rambunctiousness, terrorism, violence, poverty, diseases, abuse etc will still remain with us. unfortunately.

which is why i am amazed at those who think that dividing the country will end all our problems. wishful thinking.

FashionRe: Women And Braids ..is It Worth It? by 99cent:
I love braids! I don't wear weaves so braiding is the only alternative besides wearing my hair natural. I prefer braids by far. it's very low maintenance + looks nice.
The more Africans you have in your area, the cheaper it is. Otherwise, it can be very expensive.

Yeah, but even when it was shorter, I never got them for the same reasons. I can't sit still for 2 hours, talkless of 12. I let it grow out on its own.
ogugua, you can't sit still for 2 hours.. rub it in with ya loose hair texture.

Now pls let us folks who have realized how much its sooo worth it to sit for only 6hrs every 2-3 months vs sitting for 4 hrs every week to simply detangle the fierce bush jungle of extremely nappy African hair. ahhh I love braids grin grin

RomanceRe: Do You Believe This Is A 50 Year Old Man? by 99cent: 3:18am On Oct 02, 2013
3ace: You're saying this because a debate is already on about whether he looks 50 or less. I bet if you see this guy outside, you'll stretch forth your hand and greet him with "how na, my guy"? OP, is that his little secret in the bottle he's holding?
just go to the gym regularly and eat healthy and u will be fit too. fit people look younger. But age still shows in the FACE.
as for the bottle he's holding. I wonder why they don't show the pic of his stomach. Maybe his beer-belly is sabotaging his "youthful looks"?
RomanceRe: Do You Believe This Is A 50 Year Old Man? by 99cent: 1:37am On Oct 01, 2013
yes of course. He just happens to be fit and dressed in a crew neck t-shirt.
look at his face only and you can see the age in his face. I know people in their late 50s who look similar to that but they have potbelly. we can't see his belly.

being fit definitely makes one appear younger.

RomanceRe: First Time You Touched boo.bs Experiences by 99cent: 1:26am On Oct 01, 2013
this is the dumbest thread.
There should be a separate section titled "Pubertal Nairalanders (Ages 13-17)" so I don't have to see stupid topics like this in the general romance section. huh
Christianity EtcRe: Give Your 'Tithes' And Offerings To The Less Fortunate In Church by 99cent: 1:00am On Oct 01, 2013
tithe and offering doesn't magically get handed over to God.
tithe and offering is = your pastor's mansion and private jet.
Christians be wise. If you attend a megachurch it's ok to pay offering to contribute to making the church look maintained and luxurious but, sincerely, Christ will prefer that the money goes to the least of your brethren aka the poor.
in the olden days and old testament, the state was controlled by the church. prophets were like modern day governors hence why it was mandatory to give 10% tax tithe to the government church.

PoliticsRe: Lagosians Spend N36bn On Owambe Annually - Fashola by 99cent: 3:20am On Sep 24, 2013
I have had a similar thought at a point in time as well.
Fashola is not condemning Owambe parties. What he is pointing out is the amount of money that goes into these events and how we can keep that money within Lagos/create youth employment out of it.
Fashola is only speaking in economic terms since he is a governor and has to think about all these budget things. grin
FamilyRe: Lamentations Of A Nigerian!!! by 99cent:
What is Nigeria? What we have as Nigeria is just a bunch of 160 million Africans living within an area. ex. You are Nigeria. You can choose to move to Togo or Cameroon or Kenya if you hate Nigeria so much. Will your life be better?
or move to somalia? huh Do you hate Nigeria or do you hate Africa? Where do u wish you live in? UK? USA? Kenya? Somalia? Congo? Sudan?
be more straightforward.

CultureRe: Why Are Pure Nigerian Men So stup*d? Chika Oduah Shares Her S@XUAL Harassment by 99cent: 4:06am On Sep 15, 2013
In his mind, women’s rights are not important enough. After I voiced my opposition to his foul groping and leering intimate advances on me, he told me “women’s rights are not human rights.”
There is a poster on this forum called Biolabee. I swear he sounds exactly as this guy. He can be found arguing on the feminism thread on why women should be submissive and second class citizens to men.

By the way @OP I didn't know what you meant by 'pure Nigerian men' until I saw ur pic. LOL so what would u call urself? an impure nigerian man?
you look handsome anyway.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Feminism - Why Women In General (especially Black Women) Have Been Duped By It!! by 99cent:
bukatyne: I will place a man who has connections and a brilliant woman on equal pedestal.
I think what you are trying to say is that all fingers are not equal and we should accept reality the way it is. ie not try to change the status quo.
I personally find it unfair although I agree that reality will always be unfair. but that doesn't mean we should all be complacent.

Do you know why most people don't take feminists serious? We have left what we are good at to be looking for assistance in what we can't do. (I am not talking of gender roles because I do not believe in them either minus some exceptions). In this life, there is no competition with anybody. There is no I want to do A because Mr. B does so or because I want to prove I can or what a man can do a woman can do also/better. Anyone who does that will be extremely miserable whether a feminist or anti-feminist.
I agree that many feminists are doing a job that is not easy. The women who fought so women could be able to vote were probably miserable. they were hated and most didn't take them serious. But many yrs later, ALL women have reaped the benefit from that simple step.
Hillary Clinton when she first started out trying to put her feet in the waters of politics she was ridiculed and called all the abusive names in the book. was she miserable? I'm sure. But today, she is one of the leading candidates for presidency.
The same for BOTH female presidents in Africa (yes there are two female presidents in Africa) and they both faced misery for being females. It's extremely difficult and that's why there aren't many women in great places as there should be. the uphill battle is hard because of the many centuries of setback. it will take a lot of hard work to break even but it can be done.

just less than 200 yrs ago, EDUCATION was only for BOYS ONLY. The idea of girls going to school was unheard of and would be ridiculed. Even the english language developed in a way that it was assumed that only males will have access to reading. hence when u read the bible, they use male pronouns as if all humans were a "he" and that's because women weren't expected to be able to read so they were mostly ignored. In fact, people claimed that there was scientific evidence for why women should remain illiterate because because of biology, they are made for child rearing/cooking rather than for intellectual stuff. imagine
things have changed since then. change is always possible. the goal is for equality. I don't expect it to happen in my lifetime but I want as much progress towards the ideal in my lifetime as possible wink

We all owe ourselves the duty to ....gravitate to the system that suits us best.
hmm
yes. most people naturally do this. it's called staying in your COMFORT ZONE.
then there are the mavericks that decide to gravitate outside of the comfort zone.
Yes many feminists fall under this category and i'm sure they do it expecting the abuses and hardships. but if u are doing it for a grander vision, purpose or ideology, u can withstand anything. just like those folks that die for their beliefs.
that's why we need idealists in this world. without the idealists with progressive beliefs, nothing will ever change. we will still be living in the 10th century middle ages.

80% of progress is achieved by 20% of the population.
we don't need everybody to be feminist (although that will be awesome). just enough people to make changes. and definitely most women will be happy to share in the rewards. ex. there aren't many women out there staying at home and refusing to work. LOL but the idea that women could work happily in professional setting is something that had to be fought for and only a few women started out doing it and being ridiculed for it. ex. PHD used to stand for "push your husband down" imagine those bold women who went and achieved higher degrees and the second wave feminist movement that paved the way for the future generation of women who now see no big deal in this accomplishment of advanced educational degrees.
