Politics / Dino Melaye: Why Buhari Is Sponsoring Senator’s Problems – Fani-kayode Alleges by 9Ebisco: 3:03pm On May 03, 2018
Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, on Thursday alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari was behind the ordeal of Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain claimed that Buhari was behind the humiliation and disgrace of Melaye.

Fani-Kayode said Buhari was against Melaye because the lawmaker was opposing the current All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government.

He made the allegation while sharing a photograph of Melaye being wheeled into an ambulance on a stretcher.

In a tweet, Fani-Kayode wrote: “This is nothing but cruelty and wickedness. @MBuhari, have you not humiliated and disgraced @dino_melaye enough? And all because he had the guts to oppose you?

“Call your thugs to order and do not allow them to kill this man! If you can do this to a Senator then no one is safe!.”

Earlier, a Senior Magistrate court 2 in Lokoja, Kogi State had remanded Melaye in Police custody till June 11, 2018.

The senator who was brought into the court in a police ambulance was accused of arming youths in the state.

Celebrities / Annie Idibia Comes Under The Knife After Spelling ‘argue’ As ‘agure’ by 9Ebisco: 12:29pm On May 03, 2018
Nigerian actress Annie Idibia and the wife of popular singer 2face Idibia has come under the knife as she had tried to shake a table holding some baby mamas only to end up shading herself.

The actress had earlier today said that a kid cannot keep a man and many had believed she was referring to Sophia Momodu or she was telling Chioma that she is a kid and will not keep Davido for herself.

Fans of Davido and Chioma have since then trooped into her page to lash her for her comments.

And the funniest part is her writing after her main post “a kid cannot keep a man. Facts” she added “Agure with your phones”.

Fans that trooped in where fast to notice her blunder and even since then she has been heavily criticized by her inability to spell the word properly.

Some Fans even corrected her that it is ARGUE and not AGURE. A fan pointed out that it is AKURE and not AGURE, the reply are so harsh on her though as any man is prone to making mistake any time.

Politics / 2019: Don’t Be A Wasted Generation – Fela Durotoye Tells Nigerian Youths by 9Ebisco: 12:25pm On May 02, 2018
Fela Durotoye, a 2019 Presidential aspirant, has cautioned Nigerian youths against being a wasted generation that hands over problems to the next generation of Nigerians in the next year’s Presidential election.

Durotoye stated this while making a presentation on The Platform in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said in 2019 elections, Nigerian youths have to decide for themselves whether they want to be a generation that solves problems or a generation that simply hands problems over to another set of generation that should have it easier.

“Whenever a generation has a choice to make, they can choose to either be a wasted generation or they can choose to be a great generation.

“Now, a wasted generation is any generation that hands over a disadvantage to the next generation and says it’s now up to you to fix it.

“A wasted generation enjoys constant power and then hands over generators to the next generation. A wasted generation knocks out water from its taps and knocks out education from its schools and therefore does not want its own children to go the same schools that prepared it for leadership.

“We have inherited a nation that isn’t really working much, but that’s not good enough a reason for us to bequeath a nation that doesn’t work to the next generation.

“So, my question is, in 2019 as we must make up our minds today, we’re going to ask ourselves: Are we going to be a wasted generation.

“If we’re not going to be a wasted generation, the only option we have is to be a great generation.

“A great generation is a generation that hands over advantage to the next generation. A great generation is a generation that solves problems for the next generation and teaches them how to solve their own problems.

“You don’t pass problems on to the next generation; you pass solutions and problem-solving techniques, institutions and systems.

“If we’re going to build that great nation, we as a great generation must accept, believe, commit and deliver it.”

Meanwhile, Durotoye, last month reacted to a controversial statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari on Nigerian youths.

He said, “The Nigerian youth I know are born with wings, we just need real LEADERSHIP that believes in us to release us from this ‘CAGE’ and we will SOAR like Eagles.”

Politics / CAN Reacts To Trump’s Warning To Buhari On Killing Of Christians by 9Ebisco: 7:55am On May 02, 2018
The Christian Association of Nigeria has commended the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump for condemning killing of Christians in Nigeria.

During a joint press conference with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, Trump said the“killing of Christians in Nigeria was unacceptable” to the American government.

Reacting, CAN in a statement issued by its spokesman, Pastor Bayo Oladeji, noted that Trump told Buhari the right thing to do.

He, however, said if Buhari does not sit up and protect Christians, they will defend themselves.

Oladeji said, “We are happy that President Trump has told President Buhari the right thing to do. We hope and believe President Buhari would do the right thing and sit up. He has to sit up.

“Every time we tell them Christians are being killed, they don’t want to listen, but that is the truth. If the President cannot protect Christians, we have two options, we fight back.

“The law of the land permits self-defence. Secondly, come 2019, we vote him out. If he says there is nothing Christians can do, let him dare us.”

Politics / 2019: Shekarau Joins Race For Pdp’s Presidential Ticket by 9Ebisco: 8:37pm On Apr 30, 2018
Former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has signified his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2019 general elections under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Shekarau, who is also the immediate past Minister of Education, said in a letter made available to newsmen on Monday, that his decision to seek for PDP’s presidential ticket was informed by clarion calls from Nigerians and after wide consultations.

“As you may be aware, for quite some time now, since after the 2015 general elections, there have been various calls made by individuals and groups from many quarters, nationwide, urging my humble candidature for the contest of the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the next general elections, due in 2019.

“I strongly believe that the people are doing so out of their conviction of contentment and satisfaction based upon the modest successes recorded while I served as the Governor of Kano State (2003 to 2011), and also as a Minister of Education (July 2014 – May 2015).

“In response to these calls, and in view of the seeming intricacies and the boundless complexities involved in such a national assignment, I have consulted across the geopolitical zones and different interest groups, who examined and appraised the issue and advised me accordingly.

“I am pleased to say, based on these wide consultations, that I am better informed and convinced that participating in the democratic process of serving humanity goes beyond party affiliations/boundaries, and also beyond just winning an election.

“I have therefore decided to accept the clarion calls, and will in due course and in accordance with the guidelines of my party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), offer my humble self for the contest of the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the forthcoming 2019 general elections,” Shekarau said.

With the declaration, Shekarau had joined the likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State, former Kaduna State governor and Ahmed Makarfi and others who were reportedly seeking PDP’s presidential ticket.

Religion / Pastor Joshua Akinola Reveals Tose God Will Disgrace In Nigeria Within One Year by 9Ebisco: 10:08am On Apr 30, 2018
The Pastor of Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT), Living Word Cathedral, Oluyole in Ibadan, Pastor Joshua Akinola, has revealed that God is angry with Nigeria over the spate of killings in Benue State and other parts of the nation.

In adherence to the directive of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that all churches under the body should on Sunday show their grief by staging a peaceful protest against the act, GOFAMINT members marched outside their premises and prayed for peace in Nigeria.

While addressing the church on the issue, Pastor Akinola warned that God will disgrace agents of trouble and deaths within one year.

“There will be a total disgrace within the space of a year of all the people that are agents of trouble and deaths in this country,” he said.

Pastor Akinola stated further that a “former president once said that his ambition is not worth the blood of any citizen, I think that should be a template for all politicians.

“No matter how much infrastructure a nation invests in, if it is laid on wickedness then it will all go up in flames. The Christian community is highly disturbed and concerned, that is why we’re appealing to the conscience of our leaders to fear God and do the right thing.

“We implore the government to step up and arrest the people, for every blood of innocent citizens shed in this country especially that of Christians satan will pay in a hundredfold.”

Politics / With Melaye, Peoples’ Power Of Recall Takes Front Seat by 9Ebisco: 6:10am On Apr 29, 2018
As the recall process of Senator Dino Melaye enters a critical point, Segun James takes a look at how the people’s power to recall non-performing legislators would affect the polity

By the time you are reading this, the verification exercise of signatures of those seeking the recall of Senator Dino Melaye would have been over. Whatever way the process may take, it will, by all standards, be epochal: the first time the people of Kogi West Senatorial District will be exercising their power of recall as enshrined in the constitution.

The road to the process began in July last year when Melaye became involved in a clash with Senator Remi Tinubu when he reportedly threatened to beat her up during a closed Senate session. In his own defence, Melaye claimed she called him a thug and a dog.

Also last year, the senator became embroiled in another controversy after Sahara Reporters claimed the lawmaker never graduated university as he had claimed. This led to a lot of hostilities that resulted in the senator wearing academic gown making the infamous ‘Ajekun Iya’ video that went viral for its hilarity just as much as for its cringe-worthy embarrassment.

On June 2, 2017, members of Melaye’s constituency made their intention to recall him from the National Assembly public. For them, enough was enough; they were ready to call a vote of no confidence on their representative.

The group’s statement read, “Let it be known that all of the Local Government Areas comprising Kogi West Senatorial Zone are united in their resolve to recall Senator Dino Melaye and remove the disgrace he has become to all of us”.

The recall group listed 19 reasons why the lawmaker was being recalled, including alleged irresponsible utterances, which they claimed embarrass the constituency; violence, thuggery and other electoral offences against them during elections; and routine insults on leaders, elders and personalities.

Melaye laughed off the recall move, saying, “I am not scared.”
A recall is a constitutional instrument voters can use to unseat a serving lawmaker before the end of their tenure.

Unknown to many observers, and to Melaye’s shock, this was only the beginning. To the chagrin of the senator, the recall document was signed by people from his constituency. Yesterday, the verification exercise took place.

This follows a ruling by the appeal court which gave INEC the go-ahead to carry out the exercise.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Kogi, Mohammed Haruna, INEC federal commissioner, said the verification of signatures of those seeking to recall the senator will commence on that day.

He said the verification exercise would hold in 552 polling units in seven local governments under Kogi west senatorial district.
He also said the card reading machines will be used to authenticate the voter cards of those that signed the recall petition.
“Only those who signed the petition are expected to turn up at their polling units for verification,” Haruna said.

This is where the activities of the Non-Governmental-Organisation (NGO), Enough is Enough (EIE) comes in. In the past five years, an organization committed to the instituting of a culture of good governance and public accountability in Nigeria through active citizenship has been educating the people on the need to use their power of recall over recalcitrant law makers.

Not surprisingly, the recall Melaye’s recall process parodies hypothesis that the group had been using to sensitize Nigerians on the activities of Nigerian politician, especially law makers.

According to Ms. Yemi Adamolekun, the Executive Director of Enough is Enough, the greatest lesson from the Dino Melaye’s recall process is that from now on, politician, most especially legislators will no longer take their electors for granted.

Nigeria operates a bi-cameral legislature at the federal level of government, borrowed from the United States. The legislature as an arm of government plays a crucial role in our democratic society because its members should vote in line with their constituents’ priorities. They should also be held accountable by these same constituents based on their voting record particularly as it pertains to their role regarding:

• Appropriations – they pass the country and states’ annual budgets.

• Law-making – they make laws that promote peace, order and good government.

• Representation – as elected officials, they represent their constituencies.

• Oversight – ensure the executive arm of government is delivering on the projects monies had been appropriated for.

• Consent to high-level appointments e.g. Ministers, Commissioners, Central Bank Governor etc.

EiE and other partners began a campaign in 2013 tagged #OurNASS to increase transparency and accountability in the National Assembly. In September 2013, there was a protest to the National Assembly with demands about their finances (opacity in their annual budget, salaries and allowances), adopting electronic voting in their proceedings and maintaining a functional website so constituents who voted them will have easy access to them. #OpenNASS was coined by BudgIT in 2014 to focus on the National Assembly’s budget and the other demands from #OurNASS was added.

The campaign has been very active on social media and in the last 2 years, has been amplified via infographs in newspapers and discussions on radio and other media channels. To put more pressure on the National Assembly, a toll-free hotline (55052) was launched in December 2016 for citizens to sign petitions demanding for an effective and efficient National Assembly.
In May 2017, the president of the senate, Mr. Bukola Saraki fulfilled his promise and the National Assembly published a breakdown of its budget for the first time in seven years!

The National Assembly has been rocked by several controversies since the return to democratic government in 1999. However, over the last 3 years there has been an amplification of these crises including trying to gag social media; pushing a bill that would seriously undermine the work and independence of civil society, thereby violating constitutional rights to freedom of expression and association; purchasing new cars at exorbitant prices; fraud allegations against the Senate President that paralyzed proceedings on several occasions; deliberating immunity and life pension for its leadership when they already get a gratuity after every term; budget padding allegations against the Speaker of the House of Representatives and other principal officers; legality of the notorious constituency projects as a means to siphon funds; and a possibly illegal N10 billion payment to the legislature outside its N125 billion 2017 budget by the Ministry of Finance.

At the unveiling of a little booklet: The Citizen’s Guide to the Recall Process, Adamolekun said: “One unique feature of a healthy democracy is the check and balance each institution provides. For example, the legislature having oversight over the executive has the constitutional power to impeach a President or Governor over misconducts. In the same way, a citizen has the constitutional power to recall a non-performing legislator.”

‘Recall’ is the constitutional power of citizens to remove members of the legislature before the expiration of their term. Nigerian lawmakers have been repeatedly accused of irresponsible behaviour and poor representation of their constituents, yet they complete their tenure.

Adamolekun added that “It is important for citizens to know that they have an avenue to replace their representation at the legislative chambers in between the election cycle.”

She said that rather than using their constitutional power to recall irresponsible legislators, citizens have taken to violent reactions as seen in recent times where constituents attack their representatives.

“For example, angry youths attacked Mr. Joshua Lidani (Senator, Gombe South) on Monday, April 2nd 2018; also angry constituents stoned Mr. Garba Hamman Julde (Bali/Gassol federal constituency, Taraba) on Saturday, March 31st. she insisted that letting the citizen know their powers and how to go about exercising it motivated the publication of the guide.

In the words of Prof Itse Sagay, who wrote the foreword to the guide, “The negative conduct of our law makers since 199 has imply been overwhelming. The only control and source of relief left to voters is the ability to recall a gravely erring legislator.”

“To complement our work with other partners on a transparent and accountable National Assembly (#OpenNASS), it became imperative to educate citizens on their constitutional right to ‘recall’ a legislator who represent them poorly. In the 8th Assembly alone, we have recorded at least 5 attempts by constituents to recall a legislator.

“Of all these cases, only that of the Senator representing Kogi West seems to have scaled the first hurdle of submitting a petition to INEC. The recall process which started on June 21, 2017 would have ended September 18, 2017. However, 9 months and several court injunctions later, the process is just moving to the second stage of verifying the signatures of the constituents. Our expectation is that the Senator will allow the process to be due process to be followed.

“The legislature is a critical institution in our democracy and we will ensure that it is repurposed to serve all Nigerians, not just a few.

Enough is Enough started in 2010 and was formally incorporated in 2012. EiE is Nigeria’s leading network of individuals and organizations focused on good governance and public accountability, which is driven through active citizenship.

Politics / Dino Melaye Foiled Attempt By Kogi Govt To Kill Him – Media Aide Speaks On Lawma by 9Ebisco: 10:27pm On Apr 24, 2018
The Special Adviser to Senator Dino Melaye, Gideon Ayodele on Tuesday faulted reports that his principal jumped out of a moving vehicle in an attempt to stop police move to take him to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

Ayodele in a statement titled ‘Today’s Incident Involving Senator Dino Melaye: A Last Resort’, noted that it was not possible for Melaye to have jumped out of a moving police vehicle when he was surrounded by armed policemen.

He stated that the “incident was a last resort by Senator Dino Melaye in order to foil the attempt to kidnap him and kill him by agents of Kogi State governor in connivance with the Police.”

The statement said:

“Sequel to the avalanche of calls by well-meaning Nigerians and supporters of Senator Dino Melaye for enquiries about the well-being and safety of the Senator and against the backdrop of baseless rumours being spread on the social media, we are constrained to make the record straight as follows:

“Earlier in the morning, Senator Dino Melaye as a law-abiding citizen voluntarily submitted himself to the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) who had laid siege to his private residence since around 3.35pm of Monday, April 23, 2018.

“He, along with his lawyers and personal aides, was driven in his private car to the SARS office in Guzape district of Abuja, sandwiched among the numerous police vehicles earlier deployed to his house.

“For the avoidance of doubt, he had never evaded police invitation before now because there was none extended to him in the first place. Rather, what the Police FPRO, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, had been doing was to summon the Senator through media briefings, a practice which is unconventional.

“But given the media hype the whole saga had generated especially his unwarranted travails in the hands of Immigration officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday, April 23 and the attendant but dramatic police siege to his private residence thereafter, where family members and political associates were subjected to traumatic experience for hours, it became necessary for Senator Dino Melaye to end the drama, hence his choice of appearing before the police today.

“Later on they moved to take him to Lokoja, Kogi State. The public will vividly recall that this same case involving Senator Dino Melaye had already been transferred to Abuja by the Chief Justice of the Federal High Court after Senator Melaye expressed worry about his safety in Lokoja. Now, the question is why will they want to forcefully take him to Lokoja? The Senator believes they are doing the Kogi Governor’s bidding in order to assassinate him.

“Contrary to online reports about jumping out of a moving police vehicle; Nothing could be farther from the truth as such insinuation is practically impossible for a man saddled between gun-wielding policemen.

“Today’s incident was a last resort by Senator Dino Melaye in order foil attempt to kidnap him and kill him by agents of Kogi State governor in connivance with the Police.”

Did you watch day 81 of the Big Brother Naija 3 reality show?

If you missed it, we’ve got the highlights for you!

**

You’ve changed

While the rest of the Housemates were turning down for the night and getting ready for bed, Nina and Miracle were engrossed in a fight that had them both declaring “I’m not happy”. The cause of the midnight rumble, which both termed a discussion and not an argument, is Nina’s attitude towards Tobi and Alex, as well as her being, according to Miracle, a person he doesn’t recognise.

Stating his issues bluntly, Miracle revealed he was incensed at a comment Nina passed earlier, where she had called his close friends Tobi and Alex “them”. Miracle had earlier in the day spent time with Alex and Tobi in the jacuzzi, where they had discussed, amongst many other things, Nina and Cee-C.

“I don’t take sides and will not where drama is concerned seeing as it is the last week, but I’m surprised by your attitude. When did Tobi and Alex start being them?” he asked. Nina made it a point to reference how Alex and Tobi had told him she is using him to play the game and that their romance is not genuine, as a catalyst. “Since Tobi told you this, you have this mind-set that I am not real. Don’t let him fill your head with things that are not true. When we leave this House, you will find out who your real friends are,” she said, ominously.

Miracle didn’t take kindly to Nina’s remarks and warned her to never imply another man was telling him how to behave. “If you’re saying Tobi is filling my head, then I’ll be really angry with you. Trust me. You’re insulting me. I see you changing and that’s a fact”. Nina seemed taken aback by this attack and sniped right back, reminding him how he has also changed as the Game grinds to a halt.

The two went around in circles for a while, until Miracle cut it short and decided it would be better to speak about the issue outside the House without cameras rolling and millions of eyes watching.

Till Sleep Do us Part

If beds could talk, they would probably have a lot more to say about the Housemates they hosted throughout the season. The resting places of the Double Wahala cohort have witnessed perhaps much more than what the cameras captured. Most importantly, as holders of pillow talks and confessions, they have contributed to measuring the degree to which relationships formed and dissolved.

Arrangements between Friends

As soon as pairing happened, some Housemates were drawn to co-sleeping arrangements. Take Dee-Oneand Vandora for example, or Princess and Angel, or even Khloe and K.Brule before their Disqualification.

Blissfully Alone

Regardless of the amount of pheromones in the House, it seem as some Housemates were unwilling or unlucky in sharing the sacredness of their sleep with anyone. While some chemistry had started to form between Ifu Ennada and Bitto, both resolutely stayed in their respective single beds until their time came to an end. Ahneeka and Rico Swavey did also enjoy the comfort of rolling from one side to the other of their beds, unhindered. Yet until Khloe returned to the House to cuddle up to Rico, it is only Alex who had once co-slept with him.

If Beds Could Talk

For others, sleep has been an escape and a retreat into a safe bubble, like for Nina and Miracle or Bambamand Teddy A. Their sleep etiquette has remained constant, regardless of the events in the House. Until Leo’s Eviction, Alex and him also formed a day and night partnership, that Alex extended to Tobi too. The same could be said about Anto and Lolu, whose bond grew much tighter after she was returned to the House.

Sleep Etiquette

It was indeed Cee-C herself who when Tobi became the first Head of House, had spontaneously volunteered to share the luxury bedroom suite with him and initiated their romance. With all this, she ended up spending many more lonely nights, a combination of her acrimonious fallout with Tobi and latent general resentment towards her bickering.

What did you think of the sleep arrangements in the House?

The Final Games

When Housemates were instructed to go into the garden for the start of the final Arena games, they had no idea of the mind-blowing arrangements Biggie had made in their honour, including a one million Nairas into the bargain. Tobi, Nina, Miracle, Alex and Cee-C were as always ready to put their best foot forward for this undeniably entertaining moment, and they did not disappoint us.

On the Right Tracks

Just this once, the garden and the Arena had been totally redecorated and fitted with larger-than-life equipment, including plush thrones, monkey bars and pools which left Housemates speechless as they uncovered the settings of their last challenge. Biggie had also flipped the script as he called them to proceed by alphabetical order to the six rather intimidating challenges he had planned.

One Last Hurrah

Alex went in first, shivering in the cold evening, and after several slippery moments, was forced to concede defeat. Of all the players, she was the one who had not reached the last stage as she had run out of time. It is a highly disappointed Alex who went back to her seat and was still sobbing by the time Cee-C entered her game. Cee-C wrapped her time under the fifteen minutes Biggie had allocated each Housemate, and went back to seat looking pretty satisfied of her performance. Miracle followed and with his speed and precision scored the highest with seven minutes and thirty seconds. Nina and Tobi’s acts were also equally impressive, yet didn’t qualify them for the tantalising reward

Saving the Best for the Last

Back in their bedrooms, Housemates discovered with delight the additional surprises that Biggie still had for them. Pinned on the bedroom walls were frames of pictures of each of the Housemates captured over the previous twelve weeks. Given they had never seen their own pictures in the past three months, Housemates were elated to have received such memories of their Friday Nights adventures in the Double Wahala House they would be able to take back home.

Politics / Army Sent Me To Meet Kanu’s Father, At The Same Time Invaded His Palace – Eze Aj by 9Ebisco: 5:47pm On Apr 21, 2018
Army Sent Me To Meet Kanu’s Father, At The Same Time Invaded His Palace – Eze AjomiweThe controversy surrounding the health and whereabouts of the traditional ruler of Afaraukwu Ibeku, Eze Israel Okiru Kanu, and father of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is yet to settle.

The monarch has not been seen since September 14, 2017, when soldiers invaded his palace in search of his son.

While the chairman of Abia State and South-East Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty, Eze Eberechi Dick, said that Eze Kanu is alive, the chairman of Umuahia North Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Philip Ajomiwe, insisted that the whereabouts of IPOB’s leader’s father are unknown, adding that nobody knows the state of his health too.

Since the invasion of the palace apparently in search of the leader of the IPOB last year, neither the monarch, his son nor wife had been seen nor heard from. Eze Dick who spoke to Saturday Telegraph on the telephone regarding the whereabouts of his colleague said: “We wanted to see him in person; we inquired and found that he is alive.”

However, the traditional ruler of Oriendu, Eze Ajomiwe, who said the last time he spoke with him was early on the day of the invasion, also revealed that the army had scheduled a meeting with Eze Kanu to which he had already agreed before his palace was invaded on that fateful day.

“After speaking with him the army invaded the place later that day and that was the last till today,” he said. According to the chairman of Abia and South East Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Dick, “Eze Kanu told us that the stress of the operation was too much on him that he decided to rest.”

Eze Dick however observed that: “The local government traditional rulers council where he belongs has not told us he is missing. They have not told us anything happened to him, otherwise we would have raised the alarm at the state and south east zonal council of traditional rulers.”

The council chairman said that Eze Kanu spoke to the chairman of the advisory council of Umuahia North council of traditional rulers, who happens to be Eze Ajomiwe, about his health in response to the inquiry. Though he said that the Afaraukwu monarch was alive he however admitted that the monarch’s whereabouts are not known. He could not say where he was taking the rest.

He also reaffirmed the position of the traditional rulers over their colleague. “We don’t dabble into the problem of the son, but only about our colleague. Our traditional ruler is dear to us, whatever the son is doing with the Federal Government is not our concern. His son is a man and should be held responsible for his actions.” But Eze Ajomiwe, said that the last time he spoke with Eze Kanu was the day of the invasion.

“The last time I spoke with Eze I. O Kanu was on the day of the invasion. I spoke with him earlier that day to discuss the decision of the traditional rulers who sent me to invite him to a meeting.”

According to Eze Ajomiwe, he was sent by the chairman of the Abia and South East Council of Traditional Rulers as the chairman of the Umuahia North Council of traditional rulers under which Eze Kanu operates, to Eze Kanu for a meeting with the governor and the Commanding Officer of Ohafia Brigade.

“When I spoke with him he said he was ready to abide by the position of the traditional rulers. Unfortunately, before the day of the meeting the army struck and since then I have neither heard from him nor spoken to him.”

He confirmed that a number of people were killed during the invasion but could not say whether the monarch, his wife and son were among the dead. He said he reported to the traditional rulers his discussion with Eze Kanu and his response on the day of their meeting but that was after the army had gone to destroy the place.

Eze Ajomiwe said that all the efforts made as Eze Kanu’s colleagues in Umuahia North Council as to his whereabouts and health had not yielded the desired result even as the army has refused to say anything.

“As I am speaking to you I don’t know where he is. We have appealed to the army to tell us. If he is in their custody they should let us know, if he is dead they should release his corpse to us. It’s only in Nigeria this kind of thing can happen. I lived in the French capital for 15 years, you hardly see the army on the streets as you have in Nigeria. It’s only in Nigeria that somebody can be sent to do what is against the law.

How can the army send me to Eze Kanu only to invade his palace before the day of the proposed meeting? Why did they send me if they knew they would invade the palace? A traditional ruler of my reputation and honour.”

Eze Ajomiwe said Nigeria needs prayer of deliverance just like the Esther in the Bible fasted and prayed against the destruction of Mordecai and the Jews by Herman. He said the army should be held responsible for the health and whereabouts of the traditional ruler. “Nigeria is in a dilemma; Nigeria needs prayer of deliverance,” he said.

The Umuahia North traditional rulers’ council chairman expressed disappointment with the turn of events. “Now look at what they are doing to Eyinnaya Abaribe, (who stood as one of the sureties for the IPOB leader), asking him to produce Nnamdi Kanu. What kind of country is this? They knew that Kanu would come to court and they would do to him what they wanted yet they invaded the palace and turned around to ask Abaribe to produce him, this is unthinkable.”

On the efforts being made to know the condition of their colleague, Eze Ajomiwe said: “As traditional rulers we can’t fight the army. We don’t have AK 47, but we have appealed and are still appealing to them to tell us the whereabouts of Eze Kanu.

They are in the position to know.” Eze Eddy Ibeabuchi, the traditional ruler of Okwulaga Afaraukwu and the immediate past chairman of Umuahia North Council of traditional rulers, Eze Kanu’s neighbour, corroborated Eze Ajomiwe’s position. He said efforts made so far to know the whereabouts and health status of the traditional ruler had not yielded positive result.

He disclosed that the efforts made so far by the people of Afaraukwu over the monarch’s health and whereabouts have failed but they have not given up. Also, like Eze Dick, Eze Ibeabuchi could not find any connection between the disappearance of the traditional ruler and the activities of the group which his son led.

“We are making effort, we have written an open letter and communique to Mr President, written and published by Afaraukwu concerned citizens and I know I signed that communique. And we don’t really know where our king is and we don’t know what the Federal Government is doing because we know Nnamdi Kanu is our son. I was watching him when he was carrying on with IPOB and I never saw him one day with arms. Generally, the constitution allows people to express their feelings and that was what I saw Nnamdi Kanu doing.”

“The way the Federal Government handled the matter, as far as I am concerned, was not quite good. Moreover, he was on bail, if the Federal Government wanted to do anything they would have allowed him to come to the court, probably, they had one reason or the other not to grant him bail, not to come and kill so many people in that place. They killed so many people there. I know. I went to that compound after the episode and I saw where so many people were killed and you cannot say where the corpses are today.”

Eze Ibeabuchi said: “As for the state of his health, we don’t know. I don’t know, if I know I will tell you. The question should be asked from the army that invaded that place, they should tell us the whereabouts of that man. If the man is hiding, I don’t know, I have not seen him since that time. We have written an open letter to the president which was published by so many newspapers requesting to know the whereabouts of Kanu himself and the father and mother. We don’t know their whereabouts.”

He lamented that there had been “no response from any quarters till today.” “We have not given up, we are consulting. We want to approach the state governor because that’s the chief security officer here.

We are making effort to approach him, I don’t want to pre-empt the outcome though we have booked appointment with him several times; probably he has been very busy. He has not granted us the appointment, so we are still waiting. I know if we meet him, definitely that’s one of the things we are going to confront him with, he should tell us.”

Eze Ajomiwe added that he as the chairman of Umuahia North Council of traditional rulers, comprising traditional rulers from Ibeku and Ohuhu clans, he led them to the palace of Eze Kanu after the invasion to demand his release from the army either dead or alive. “The media even helped us to publish the demands contained in the communique.”

Health / JOHESU Strike: Patients Leave Hospitals In Droves by 9Ebisco: 6:16pm On Apr 20, 2018
Patients in tertiary health institutions in Cross River State are now leaving hospitals in droves.

MC EBISCO correspondent who visited some health institutions in the state observed that some of the hospital beds were empty.

The Chairman, Committee of Chief Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals and Medical Centres, Prof Thomas Agan regretted the strike action embarked upon by JOHESU.

He said on Friday, “But with this strike, the ward is about 75% empty compared to what is used to be because there has never been a time where the ward has not been less than 80% filled.

As I’ve always said, it’s unfortunate. It’s a strike that is arising out of demand of improved welfare of the health worker.

“It is true that JOHESU had placed demands on the federal government and I am aware that they had an MoU which was to be executed either fully or partly and as I’m made to understand, none of the conditions was adhered to by the government.

He said that JOHESU went out on strike because of anger that the government seems not to be listening to them. “It’s unfortunate that many people will lose their lives both old and young.

“Very unfortunate and I sincerely regret and feel bad that the health sector is being paralyzed because of welfare matters. It’s just the major operations that we cannot carry out right now.

He said that a lot of patients have requested to go home and you cannot keep the patients because if anything goes wrong, he has the right to sue.

On revenue, the CMD lamented that revenue in the hospital has crashed, “Definitely revenue has crashed beyond what you are expecting because you know even those who are supposed to make bills and bring the revenue in have to go on strike. It’s an unfortunate situation.

“At my own level which is the committee of CMDs, we feel pained that this matter is still lingering because at the end of it, we are the ones who are sitting at the border.

“At the end of the day, government will ask us what did you do, how did you manage the situation and what happened.

“We will continue to work with the government to ensure that all lingering issues in the health sector are handled. All we need to do is to trust one another, have respect for one another and also for human lives.

“The lives we are protecting may be our own lives, and like I always tell people, the death of one person may mean zero percent to the nation but it can mean 100 percent to the family directly involved,” he stated.

Politics / Arewa Youths React To Buhari's Lazy Nigerian Youths: "We Are Disappointed" by 9Ebisco: 5:32pm On Apr 20, 2018
Northern youths under the auspices of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum on Friday went hard on President Muhammadu Buhari over his recent remarks in London that a lot of young persons in the country prefer to sit without working, stressing that the criticism is an insult on all Nigerian youths.

The Arewa youths, who spoke through their national president, Yerima Shettima, in an exclusive chat with MC EBISCO said they have heard Buhari’s remarks at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London and are biding their time till 2019 to let the President know whether they are actually jobless and lazy.

Recall that presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina had accused mischievous persons of twisting the comment by his principal, who he quoted as saying, “a lot of them (young Nigerians) have not been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria has been an oil producing country, therefore they should sit and do nothing and get housing, healthcare and education free”.

But reacting, Yerima stated that Adesina’s attempt at clarification does not make any difference, adding that since Buhari’s comment became public knowledge, he has been getting calls from youths across the north, expressing anger over the comment from the Nigerian leader.

He said it was bad enough that the president spoke in an international event where other nationalities were present, stressing that it was regrettable that the President would speak so of younger Nigerians who put their lives on the line to install the Buhari government.

“From the moment that statement was out, there have been a lot of complaints and grumbles from various people from my place, and they kept calling. The complaints were too much that I was compelled to issue a statement.

“Ordinarily, I wouldn’t have said anything because I am not surprised to see that kind of statement because the government does not believe in the Nigerian youths from inception.

“If you look at the arrangement, the appointment, and how the government relates with the youths of this country, you will see that they do not have respect for the Nigerian youths despite the contributions of the youths. Don’t forget that the youths put their lives on the line to fight against the previous government but when it comes to sharing the goodies of government, the youths are nowhere to be found.

“We are completely disappointed in Buhari and we will never make this mistake again,” Yerima said.

Politics / Ekiti: My Aspiration Not Borne Out Of Selfishness – Oni by 9Ebisco: 7:48am On Apr 19, 2018
Lagos – Chief Segun Oni, the former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has picked the party’s nomination form for the governorship primary in Ekiti State slated for May 5 2018.

Speaking at the APC headquarters in Abuja, Oni said his aspiration was not borne out of a personal quest, but based on calls by the people for him to be the arrowhead of a collective effort to re-engineer Ekiti State.

“This is not a quest by Segun Oni. We all came together and they gave me the opportunity to be the point man,” Oni said.

Accompanied by a huge crowd, which included former National and State House of Assembly members, local government chairmen and commissioners, Oni said the APC was well accepted by the people and victory in the poll is a foregone conclusion.

“We don’t need any federal, state or local government might to wrestle Ekiti for us. Ekiti people are already waiting for us,” Oni said.

Presenting the nomination form, Senator Osita Izunaso, the party’s National Organising Secretary, eulogised Oni as a bridge builder and a dependable leader, who would not take a position without listening to other people’s views.

“Engr. Segun Oni has been here with us. We wouldn’t have loved to release him, but we have to, because you asked for him,” Izunaso said.

He assured the people of Ekiti State that the party would provide a level playing ground for everyone.

“We will be fair to everybody and the election shall be free. So far, 28 aspirants have collected the form; 27 men and a woman.

“We are happy because the interest in our party is very high and visible in Ekiti. We want someone who would deliver and who would redraw the map of Ekiti. The worst we have had will be the last in Ekiti,” he added.

It would be recalled that Oni declared his intention to contest the governorship position again in Ekiti State since July last year.

Celebrities / I Don’t Have Anything Against Nina; Boyfriend Confesses by 9Ebisco: 4:55pm On Apr 18, 2018
Nigerian big brother housemate Nina who is having a romantic relationship with fellow housemate Miracle has been called out by fans for this act considering that she has a boyfriend outside the house.

With regards to the statement she made during the last eviction show of BBNaija which she said ‘Miracle is everything to me, my boyfriend is my boyfriend’, Collins who is her boyfriend has spoken out.

After this statement a twitter account that seemed to be owned by Collins had blasted her, but the real boyfriend Collins has now spoken out that he has nothing against her.

He insisted that the account which made this ranting was only someone trying to impersonate him.

He said; “Hello everybody…someone has been impersonating me on twitter…saying bad things about Nina…I bear no grudges for her. This not me on Twitter… Its a fake account. This is the guy behind the fake twitter account…he was using this handle @Collins_uno, he goes by this handle now @Collins_neo.. He is an imposter, an impersonator…that’s not me.”

Nina had broken up with Miracle earlier this week but it seems the two love birds are back together after friends like Alex, Tobi and Anto aided the reconciliation committee.

Crime / Pastor Kills Church Member Mistaken For A Vampire by 9Ebisco: 8:22pm On Apr 17, 2018
A pastor, Masimba Chirayi of the New Johanne Masowe, Zimbabwe, has reportedly killed a church member he assumed to be a vampire.

This occurred while he was baptising the deceased identified as Wendy Thinnamay Masuka.

According to reports, the clergyman felt threatened by the late congregant's violent reaction while being baptised.

“In my eyes she was like a vampire possessed by demons, she was violent and I thought she was going to kill people so I kept her submerged in water until I overpowered her,” says Chirayi when made to appear at a Magistrate's court in Zimbabwe.

Punch News reported that the pastor has been granted bail but has been set for a court reappearance in May 2018.

The police in Malawi have reported that no less than 140 people have been arrested following deadly mob attacks on suspected "vampires" in the country.

Sky News reports that there have been at least nine killings, including that of an epileptic man who was reportedly burnt to death and another stoned to death in one of the country's biggest cities, Blantyre.

According to the reports, the assaults started in September following rumours of "bloodsuckers" on the loose.

The police say that the situation has quickly spun out of control.

Illegal roadblocks have been set up by mobs, which has led to security concerns in the southern African country.

Some residents have said that their homes have been destroyed following speculations that they were giving aid to vampires.

Peter Mutharika, Malawi's president, has appealed for calm in the four districts where the attacks are reported to have taken place.

He said: "my government will offer protection from these alleged bloodsuckers".

Sky News reports that some areas have been declared dangerous zones for people working for the United Nations and US embassy.

A safety report by the UN on the Phalombe and Mulanje areas said: "These districts have severely been affected by the ongoing stories of bloodsucking and possible existence of vampires."

Police chief Lexon Kachama said: "The biggest challenge is that thieves and robbers have now taken advantage of the situation and are mounting illegal roadblocks at night in order to harass people."

There is widespread belief in witchcraft in rural Malawi, a country which is one of the poorest in the world and has many aid agencies working.

Politics / Buhari’s Government Epitomises Lies, Deceit – Bishop by 9Ebisco: 5:46pm On Apr 17, 2018
Right Reverend Livinus Bieronwu Onuagha, the Methodist Bishop of Onitsha Diocese, has said that the government of President Muhammed Buhari epitomised lies and deceit.

Bishop Onuagha stated this in his address during the 16th Annual Diocesan Synod with the theme, “Strive For Peace And Holiness” held at All Saints Methodist Church Ukpor/Oraukwu Street Fegge, Onitsha, at the weekend.

He noted that the nation as currently conceived is a failed state for not being able to provide the necessities of life such as security, health, power, roads and employment to the people.

He flayed President Buhari and his cabinet for not doing enough to address the problems, pointing out that the current government was fast losing the remaining trust of Nigerians.

He stressed that any government that builds its establishment on lies cannot stand.

The Bishop said, “How can a government that is security conscious tell her people that Boko Haram terrorist in the watchful eyes of the military brought back kidnapped girls in convoy and were left to go scot-free.

“Does it not sound absurd? Lai Mohammed, the information minister, thinks we all lack sense of judgment, you arranged and sent away one hundred and ten girls and you brought back one hundred and four, do we lack lawyers in Nigeria to sue these senseless people for whatever and bring these blood thirsty people to book?

“Even if Sgt. Bako did not say anything, it is an open truth on what has transpired. On the other hand, why is this kidnapping only for girls? Why can’t the Boko Haram terrorists go for boys’ school? May God judge the perpetrators of this evil, the gate of hell cannot prevail against the church,” he said.

Speaking on South Sast states, the Methodist Bishop scored Anambra State as most developed in the region, followed by Ebonyi and Enugu, then Abia and slammed Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State for not very impressive performances.

He accused Governor Okorocha of behaving like Biblical King Nebuchadnezzar, just as he warned him on the implications of imposition of his son in-law on the people of the state.

On Anambra and Ebonyi, the bishop was full of praises and commendation for Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra and Engineer Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State stating that their performances have impacted positively on the people of the two states.

While noting that their performances have demonstrated that they are a round peg in a round hole, he urged the duo to continue their commitment to better the lot of their state.

He called other governors in the region to strive to perform just as he urged the chairman of the South East Governor’s Forum to seek and explore the possibility of floating a South East Businessmen Forum, and the possibility of reviving the moribund Nkalagu Cement Factory and ANAMMCO, a vehicle manufacturing company owned by the old Anambra State government.

Politics / Buhari’s Government Worst In Education Funding – ASUU by 9Ebisco: 6:29pm On Apr 16, 2018
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that the stifling of education funding under the Muhammadu Buhari government is preparing the country for a greater future doom.

It stated that the nonchalant attitude of the Buhari-led government to education appears to be the worst in the history of Nigeria with about 7 percent allocation to Education.

Chairman, University of Ibadan branch of ASUU, Dr. Deji Omole, who stated this on Monday in an interview with journalists, noted that the failure to vote enough money to public varsity education is already causing gradual crisis of confrontation between University administration and students in some parts of the country.

Omole said, “It will be difficult to have a citizen that will love the country in the future if the current trend of abandoning the poor while taking care of the rich continues. While each senators is paid N13.5million as running cost per month the same Senate appropriated a paltry sum of N66million for capital projects for University of Ibadan with students population of about 30,000.

“This can only happen where the ruling class lacks vision like Nigeria. This same government refuses to drop a kobo for the revitalization of public universities. Now many children of the masses are denied access because universities cannot admit beyond what the dilapidated infrastructure can take. Yet their parents cannot afford private university. the federal government is owing about N800billion revitalization funds to public varsities as contained in the agreements with ASUU.”

The ASUU, who vowed that the union will oppose any plan to force children of the masses out of school by imposing on them dues that are the duties of federal government, asserted that the ruling APC has performed poorly in Education.

According to him, the United States of America that members of the elite takes their children to funds her public varsities because the USA is interested in bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, and knows the negative implication of having a growing pool of illiterates as we have in Nigeria.

Omole maintained that the Buhari government has paid lip service to public education but prefers to pacify militants and terrorists.

The ASUU chairman stated that while the masses are groaning in hardship, the political class have increased their number and stored enough money taken from the collective patrimony in preparation for the 2019 general elections.

Politics / SEC: Buhari’s Minister Under Fire For Reassigning Portfolios by 9Ebisco: 9:17am On Apr 16, 2018
Three shareholders’ groups have called for the immediate removal of Kemi Adeosun as Minister of Finance, for her unwholesome interference on the affairs of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Adeosun had on Friday approved the reassignment of portfolios in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with Ms. Mary Uduk assuming the position of the Acting Director-General of the Commission.

The group described the minister’s decision to reassign portfolios in SEC as “unnecessarily meddling” with the functions of the commission, which has caused severe damage to the capital market.

Specifically, the National President of Trusted Shareholders Association of Nigeria (TSAN), Alhaji Mukhtar Ismail Mukhtar; the National Coordinator, Proactive Shareholders Association (PROSAN), Taiwo Oderinde; and the Coordinator, Oando Shareholders Solidarity Group (OSSG), in a joint statement on Sunday, said Adeosun had inevitably caused untold harm both to the independence of SEC and the nation’s capital market in her desperate attempt to shield Oando from probe.

The statement reads: “We wish to bring the attention of His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and all Nigerians to the unwholesome, unpatriotic and strange actions of the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun with regards to the probe of Oando Plc.”

“You may recall that since early last year, Oando has been enmeshed in series of crises bordering on abuse of corporate governance and alleged gross financial mismanagement.

“The internal auditors of Oando Plc, Messrs Ernst & Young, in the company’s financial report last year expressed doubts over its ability to continue as a going concern because its liabilities exceeded its assets.

“As concerned shareholders, we sent petitions to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and to the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market.

“The committee mandated SEC to investigate these allegations, culminating in the setting up of a committee by SEC to carry out a preliminary investigation of the company’s affairs.

“SEC’s preliminarily investigation, as disclosed by the commission in a letter dated October 17, 2017 signed by its Head of Legal unit, Braimoh Anastasia, unearthed several malpractices in the company.

“These include insider trading, decoration of dividends from unrealised profits, release of false financial statements to the public and the disposal of assets without the knowledge of the regulatory body in contravention of the Investment and Securities Act (ISA) 2007, among several other infractions.

“These weighty findings compelled the suspension of Oando shares on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchangeto pave way for a more thorough investigation.”

Sports / If Anybody Beats The Pacers, It Might Be An Assistant Coach by 9Ebisco: 7:40pm On Apr 15, 2018
Domantas Sabonis, the forward caught by surprise when the Oklahoma City Thunder traded him to the Indiana Pacers in July, was in store for even more shock when he arrived in Indianapolis for summer workouts:

Bill Bayno, an assistant coach for the Pacers, outfitted himself with huge pads on his arms, which he wielded like clubs as Sabonis drove to the basket.

“Just wanted to teach him how to use his body,” Bayno said after a recent practice, adding: “He’s picked that up really quick.”

That assessment could apply to countless elements of Sabonis’ first season with the Pacers, a team that, in a span of mere months, went from presumed Eastern Conference doormat to NBA playoff contender, with a first-round series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

For the Pacers, who play Game 1 in Cleveland on Sunday, so much about their surprising season — and they were, by far, the biggest surprise in the league this season — hinged on Sabonis, a 21-year-old former star at Gonzaga, and another newcomer, Victor Oladipo, 25, who helped spur the team to a 48-34 record and the fifth seed in the East.

Nobody is taking the Pacers lightly anymore.

“I feel like certain people have waited for them to come down all season, but they’re not coming down,” J.J. Redick of the Philadelphia 76ers said. “They’re a great basketball team.”

Oladipo and Sabonis have provided the Pacers with more punch than anyone could have reasonably projected. During the regular season, Oladipo — liberated from the various challenges of playing alongside Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City — averaged career highs in points (23.1), rebounds (5.2), assists (4.3) and steals (2.4), and was named to his first All-Star team.

“It goes to show you the importance of being in the right situation, of playing for a coach that puts you in good positions,” Redick said, referring to the Pacers’ Nate McMillan. “For 80 to 90 percent of the league, that’s what it’s all about.”

Sabonis made a seismic jump in his own development, averaging 11.6 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent from the field, mostly off the bench.

“He’s been everything we thought he would be and more,” Bayno said.

There is a unique kinship between Oladipo and Sabonis, who have been traded together — twice. Sabonis’ rights were included in a draft-night trade in 2016 that sent him and Oladipo, along with Ersan Ilyasova, from the Orlando Magic to the Thunder.

“It’s just a special bond, man,” Oladipo said. “He’s like my little big brother. I can talk to him about anything, and he can talk to me about anything.”

The Pacers acquired them last summer when Paul George, a five-time All-Star who had spent his entire career with the team, made it clear that he wanted out of Indiana. Given George’s trade demand, the Pacers did not have a ton of leverage. They eventually struck a deal with the Thunder, who agreed to trade Oladipo and Sabonis for George. No player was more synonymous with the franchise. Now, he was gone.

At the time, words like “fleeced” and “pathetic” were used in various reports to describe the transaction. In fairness, neither Oladipo nor Sabonis seemed capable of coming close to filling the void left by George.

Oladipo, in his lone season with the Thunder, averaged 15.9 points and 2.6 assists a game toiling in Westbrook’s shadow. And Sabonis, as a first-year player, averaged 5.9 points a game while shooting 39.9 percent from the field.

This was the grand haul the Pacers collected for George? It was almost incomprehensible.

“Everybody thought we were going to be a lottery team,” Bayno said.

Yet Bayno said he had no doubt that last summer’s trade affected both players.

“I think it motivated Vic and Domantas,” Bayno said, “because they both have supreme confidence in their abilities.”

Not long after he was traded, Sabonis, who is from Lithuania, took himself off the roster for the country’s appearance at the FIBA EuroBasket tournament so he could move to Indianapolis and start working with the coaching staff several weeks before training camp.

It was not an easy decision. The head of the Lithuanian basketball federation happens to be his father, Arvydas Sabonis, the Hall of Fame center.

“To miss that really hurt,” Domantas Sabonis said. “It’s a big deal for the country. It means more than anything.”

But Sabonis and the Pacers clearly benefited from his early arrival. Sabonis found Bayno waiting for him at the team’s practice facility with those pads, which he used to batter Sabonis on drives to the basket. Bayno was trying to teach Sabonis to use his shoulder to initiate contact and knock his defenders off-balance.

By December, Bayno was challenging Sabonis to become “the best passing big man” in the league. Bayno could sense that Sabonis had rare vision and touch for a player his size. More growth is ahead.

“We’re working on finding that balance between shooting when he’s open and kicking it out when he draws a crowd,” Bayno said. “Because there are times where he’ll attack and have three guys on him, and that’s the only time when he has a tough time making those decisions.”

Sabonis does not shy away from physical play. Before a recent game against the 76ers, he wore a gash on his face — an artifact of one such collision. Then, during the game itself, he went out and sprained his left ankle.

Sabonis has since returned, showing more polish than ever. Against the Charlotte Hornets on April 8, he scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

“I’m still learning,” Sabonis said. “I’m not even close. I experience new things every game.”

With a playoff matchup looming against LeBron James and the Cavaliers, Sabonis is about to experience even more.

Politics / NEMA: EFCC Invites More Top Officers Amid Reps Probe Of DG Maihaja by 9Ebisco: 9:29pm On Apr 14, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited 13 more top officers of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for questioning over alleged N2.5billion scandal in the agency.

Consequently, the list of those implicated in the fraud has increased to 20.

The anti-graft commission had earlier quizzed a former Director-General and six serving directors of the agency.

A fact-sheet obtained by The Nation showed that the 13 officers invited are Deputy Director( Finance); Assistant Director( Finance); PEO; ACT 1; SEO ACT1; CA; ACT; ACA; SA; another ACT and three others whose ranks were unspecified.

A source said: “We are expecting the 13 officers to appear on or before Monday. But if they do not come, we may effect their arrest accordingly.

“They were summoned by this agency as part of the ongoing probe of large scale financial impropriety in the NEMA.

“We had earlier interrogated some directors who made references to the roles played by these 13 officers.”

The report read in part: “From the investigation carried out so far, officials could not account for funds transferred from the NEMA account to their personal accounts.

“Moreover, the funds were being withdrawn in cash and in some cases transferred to family members. Also, it was discovered that some of these funds were placed in fixed deposit; while both the principal and interest were withdrawn in cash by the depositor.

“Furthermore, the issue of companies incorporated by the officials of the NEMA who are public servants is against the Public Service Rules. This is more so as the companies are active and still receiving funds in some cases from the NEMA.

“There were frivolous emolument claims that were wrongly processed by directors and some officials of the agency.”

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives panel investigating the alleged violation of public trust by NEMA has stated that it will invite Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Osinbajo is the board chairman of NEMA.

During a public hearing on Thursday, the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, also decided to summon Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the EFCC and Winifred Oyo-Ita, Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

The House of Representatives had on Wednesday accused Director General of NEMA, Engr Mustapha Maihaja of mismanaging N1.6bn released to him by the Federal Government in July 2017 for relief intervention to flood victims in 16 states.

The sum was said to have been expended on contracts awarded to 216 companies that were not qualified for contract awards in the country.

On Thursday, the committee was informed that the 6,779 metric tonnes of Chinese rice, which arrived in July, 2017 in 271 containers stayed uncleared in the ports for 6 months before NEMA could get documents to commence the clearing process on December 4.

The DG said though 161 million naira has been spent in addition to the 400 million naira on transportation, delivery and logistics, the agency could not confirm that the rice has been received and accepted by the IDPs.

He also added that out of the 271 containers, only 110 have so far been cleared and taken to the north east.

Similarly, he was grilled on 3 billion naira worth of rice supply contract awarded to Olam Nigeria Limited and Two Brothers, when they did not have Tax Identification Number (TIN) and has not been paying PENCOM dues for their staff.

The director general, however, said the contracts were awarded during emergency period so the agency did not do due process on the companies.

The director, Relief and Rehabilitation, in NEMA, Mr Kayode Fagbemi, who signed the contract award letter, informed the committee the 3 billion worth of 10 thousand metric tonnes of rice contract awarded to Olam Nigeria Limited and Three Brothers, was done on the directive of the director general even though it did not comply with procurement process.

Maihaja, however, explained that though Pension Commission (PENCOM) and FIRS did not certify the companies to be qualified to do those contracts at the time the contracts were awarded, they provided the required documents before the certificate of due diligence was awarded by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

But the lawmakers maintained that that was not an excuse for the breach of extant laws that guide procurement in Nigeria, and that it is curious that in spite of not meeting requirements, the agency was bent on awarding it to Olam and Three Brothers, when other competent companies could have been engaged.

Politics / Only 15 Of The 113 Chibok Schoolgirls Alive - Boko Haram Journalist Claims by 9Ebisco: 3:00pm On Apr 14, 2018
Following years of search for the missing Chibok schoolgirls, a journalist investigating Boko Haram has made a new claim on the matter.

Ahmad Salkida, the Nigerian journalist, formerly based in Dubai, said today that only 15 out of the remaining 113 Chibok schoolgirls, believed to be with their Boko Haram abductors are alive. He made the claim in series of tweets today, in which he provided a backgrounder to the abduction, exactly four years ago.

Salkida said the surviving 15 have been married off, indoctrinated and may no longer be interested in returning home. He advises government in negotiating for the release of the 15 girls to demand ‘proof of life’.

His tweets dealt with the botched attempts during the Jonathan era when the Boko Haram terrorists were willing to release the girls on swap deals and later developments.

Here is his story as picked from his Twitter handle @contactsalkida:

Ahmad Salkida: says most of the 113 Chibok schoolgirls believed to be with Boko Haram have died

Four years ago, a middle ranking Boko Haram commander led dozens of fighters in search of food and other supplies in the remote town of Chibok. Like an afterthought, they saw a chance to abduct school girls in Girls Secondary School Chibok. The girls at the time were preparing for their exams.
The dozens of Boko Haram fighters faced no opposition during the abduction, as they struggled to convey their captives to the forest of Alagarno, the insurgent’s first war capital, which they named Timbuktu. It was in Timbuktu that they organised most of the horror we experience today.

Some of the girls were lucky to have escaped on their way to Timbuktu that night, because there were fewer fighters to hold more than 200 girls. At the beginning, the group didn’t know what to do with the girls, at least, not in the first one month of their captivity.

However, what many people did not know was that two weeks into the abduction, the Jonathan administration was already in touch with me for the peaceful release of the girls. By the way, I was in self-exile after pressure from the same Government.

I took an excuse where I was doing a menial job in the UAE (but still reporting the insurgency), to see the president, which was facilitated by Aliyu Gebi and Labaran Maku. By the 3rd of May, I was already on my way from Abuja to Madagali, Marwa and finally to a Boko Haram camp.

I got a proof of life for the president and another for the media in case I didn’t get back. The demands of Boko Haram then were simple. They wanted detained members taken to Damaturu and they will move the girls to Buni-Yardi for swap somewhere in between. There was no word on ransom

I was provided with full military escorts from Abuja to Damaturu. Government was supposed to make sure that 70 detainees were ready on my arrival in Damaturu to meet 30 there. The rest of the negotiating team was in Abuja making sure the prisoners were on a plane before my arrival.

On arrival in Damaturu, the military commander there was not briefed about my work. He was merely told to expect a VIP. At that time, the girls have been moved by Boko Haram, but there were no prisoners for exchange and I got a call from the former Chief of Defence Staff to abort the operation.

The president later said before me that he did not call off the swap. There was a credible window, but zero Will to rescue the girls. Boko were angry. I returned to the UAE to continue my hustle, but received invitations not only by the former administration, but the current government

Four out of five processes that I was involved in, we came close to a swap deal, but Government in most instances did not provide the platform I presented with the required expertise. And whenever Government dragged its feet, Shekau will shift the goal post.

I continued my reporting on the crisis, often critical of government and Boko Haram, with both sides raising concerns. For me, I am a reporter before anything else, many officials consider me as somebody who was too independent minded for a process that needs to be shrouded in secrecy.

Government began to look for alternatives to conclude what I’ve started and my former couriers stepped in as the primary ‘negotiators.’ It was a break for me because it is no longer negotiations, but mere transaction. Another reason was my insistence that the process must be domesticated

I was a prickle in the flesh of our leaders with my counter claims of official narratives. A day after I exclusively released a video of the girls, something I’v done in the past, I was declared wanted by same military that provided me with escorts, military aircraft for assignments

I was amazed to learn later that the terms that saw the release of some of the girls was unfavourable than what I presented, but as my friend will say, even if we come up with a cure for cancer, the war economy and elites would rather die than accept a cure from a talaka.

Today, my painstaking investigations on the #Chibokschoolgirls revealed that just a handful of the 113 #ChibokGirls are alive. Many of the girls have died as a result of cross fires and bombardments of the security forces that no doubt were intent on rescuing them.

I regret to state here that only 15 out of the 113 #Chibokgirls are alive today, based on my investigations in the last three months and we have already seen some of them in a video, which I exclusively obtained and was published on SR website.

What is the status of the remaining 15 girls as far as negotiations are concerned? My investigations also revealed that, they are no longer under the control of #AbubakarShekau. According to sources, they are now ‘married’ and only their ‘husbands’ can decide their fates.

If they are divorced or the men are killed that is when Shekau’s decision takes precedence, and in this instance, since the girls have been indoctrinated, their leader has no right to negotiate for their release, no matter the ransom offered, reliable multiple sources said.

It will be unbearable to share the names of the 15 that are alive here, this is the responsibility of Government. When I was involved, I regularly provided proof of life. Government must demand that to prove me wrong or stop negotiating for many of the girls that don’t exists.

The secrecy around the condition of the #ChibokGirls and most recent #DapchiGirls debacle by those involved is the reason people like me are out of the picture. The fact remains that under the present circumstances there is NO room for peace settlement.

The way out for these girls, is a military rescue or negotiate wt individual captors to release their ‘wives’ in return for some kind of deal, but this will mean death to these fighters bcz the terror group now sees the girls as part of their own and must be protected.

How comes there is little or no information about the girls and both the parents and campaigners are in the dark? Because, Govt resist independent reporting of the crisis, most of the reports are choreographed & Nigerians are also not ready to hear the truth or stand by it.

Reporting the #LakeChadCrisis is not just a job for me, Borno is my home, this crisis has affected me too. I’v invested 13yrs of my 18yrs journalism career to follow this story in a way no reporter or researcher has done, hence my knowledge of this crisis can’t be dismissed.

I’v risked my life and that of my family in the past and even now, not only to tell the story, but to play the role of a mediator and fact finder. But as soon as the FG found alternatives, my sacrifices got an official ridicule and I am being hounded.

I hold no other intention of doing this than the need to stir a debate to demand more insights and bring closure to the parents. The nation must not fail you from rescuing your daughters and also fail to tell you the truth.

My heartfelt condolences to the parents of the near 100 that have perished or have not returned home and apparently not with their captors. But you must always remember that your daughters were stronger than the rest of us that couldn’t do more to avert this catastrophe.”

Politics / 2019: ADP Blasts Buhari Over Decision To Seek Re-election by 9Ebisco: 9:01am On Apr 13, 2018
The National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Engineer Yabagi Sani, has expressed surprise over President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to seek re-election in the 2019 election.

Sani, speaking to newsmen on Thursday, noted that Buhari’s declaration would surely lead to the defeat of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) at the poll.

“What is our headache if APC decides to field a liability or even chose not to field any candidate at all? But sincerely speaking, if the man truly have the interest of the nation at heart, he should not have succumbed to pressure to subject himself and the entire nation to another moments of fearful anxiety.

“Now that we know where the APC is heading, our duty is to mobilize Nigerians to more than ever before obtain PVCs and come out to vote out hardship, wanton killings and unemployment, which another four years of Buhari represents.

“We will double our efforts at ADP to provide a credible alternative that will have the age, vitality, character and know-how to take Nigeria out of the woods.

“We have no doubts that Buhari’s declaration is the final revelation of the impending demise of APC,” he said.
