Bros, this is experience talking. But your Sienna is not equipped with a manual transmission. All the transport companies that were using Sienna folded up. There is something that we always forget, that we are supposed to change the ATF every 15k miles. So if I ply Lagos Abuja, I should be changing the ATF every 3 months. No one is doing that and it is another reason for the gear failures. I guess it's one of the reasons why Toyota went to Ghana because they won't be able to handle the litigations if they were to be here. As we are analysing the faults and reasons of the faults, let us find a solution to this problem. I don't even want to talk about the ABS that cost over 1m on a GX 470 talkless of on the 2017 model of the highlander. Why will I buy an 18 year old 4 cylinder car for 4m? What am expecting to gain from it? If you are on the road, almost 80% are Toyota brand, it means that our motorists are suffering and smiling.
ATF change every 15k miles

Where did you get this from?

Even Honda with very stringent ATF change interval does not recommend this.

Lie small small oga.

This your penchant for exaggeration and pulling facts out of thin air doesn't do you any good.

Inukwa 80%. Where did you conduct this ludicrous study?

The misconception that Toyota products are built to tolerate abuse. An average Toyota user pays little or no attention to his trans design, specified fluids and maintenance records.
Finish.

Some trust the under tree mechanics more than the manufacturers who specified recommended fluids, frequency of change and conditions of change.

Na Toyota people dey wash trans filter put am back. Then turn around to blame the transmission for failing. grin

Yep.

To see a 2019 Corolla already 300k plus miles shocked me.

That's an average of 100k miles a year.

I'm sure it's running on its factory transmission.

1. Most of the vehicle imported are salvaged, the gear system is already faulty from abroad because of the accident they were involved or the handling they received at the auction yard, to trucking and shipping carelessly till they got to nigerian soil. It's just unfortunate ot packed up in the hands of the current user.

2. Poor maintenance, I always change all the fluids of the vehicle I just acquired, for tokunbo I wait after 6months for naija used within a week some people are afraid and would rather use the tokunbo fluid like that not knowing the condition the vehicle came at, they won't even guage the fluid hence damage occurs.

3. Bad or ill trained technician plus high cost of goods in our country is also a major factor, the I'll trained technician love dextron III fluid like kilode because it is cheaper and readily available. Cost too sometimes chases owners away dextron III for 2000 sienna b4 was 800naira, it's now 2k for 1L while texamatic was 3500/L b4, it's now 8k/L. Honda DW1 was 4k/L while dual pump II axle fluid was 3500/L now both are 8k yo 8500/L and minimum wage still dey 30k ooo intruder to cut cost, sharp practised are bound which leads to failure on the long run.

4. The country is not yet ripe for those advanced technologies, the roads needed, fluids needed, competent hands needed are scarse resources go Mobil and Total nah 20w50 full their line up. We don't manufacture the necessary things needed to keep those cars on road infact since 1980s, nigerian tech space has been degrading and reason why at many mechanic workshops, you find high end vehicles abandoned there due to lack of spare parts or technical know how.
You get time oo.

Sha add that most of those yotas are already high mileage (some with more than 250k miles).
I've seen a 2019 Corolla with 3xx,Bleep miles. Clean title! wink

I didn't mention Mercedes owners at all?

And yes, now you mention it, I see the utilitarian quality of hanging keys. But in my experience most people who do it aren't doing it for utility or practicality; they do it to show off that they're car owners.

Keep in mind that most contemporary cars don't need you to actually bring out your keys for anything, thanks to keyless entry and keyless go. Imo, unless in a very niche case like yours where there's just no space in pockets, I don't see the point in hanging a car key.

In most cases, it's a similar issue to those who walk about waving iPhones around the place.
If you are talking about cars with push to start and keyless entry systems, then I totally get you.

Poverty regularly displays itself as a wanton need to impress and receive validation.

So yeah, anyone who flashes their keys is poor. The worst kind of poor as well.
Sarcasm or ....

I really don't get the penchant for comparing Mercedes and Lexus owners.

@OP, There are more Lexus cars on the roads than Mercedes so it might be purely coincidental that you see more Lexus keys than Mercedes keys.

Your perspective (flaunting keys) might be different from that of the car owner.

People do not pocket their cars for a variety of reasons.
1. Bulk
2. Tight clothing
3. Convenience
4. Accessibility.

I can't count the number of times I have had to dig into my trouser to get my key out when I am wearing a tight trouser and how uncomfortable it was.

In the end, I got a clip and hang my keys on my belt holder.

Am I flaunting?

I am merely doing what is convenient.

When I am wearing loose clothing, I pocket the keys since it is less of a hassle.

Frankly, I have not noticed that people flaunt keys.

@OP, are you bothered about people's keys in any way? Check yourself oo.

I'm driving toyota camry 2004 model, I start noticing recently, anytime I drive for more than an hour and I open the car bonnet, the heat emanating from the engine is just much and I noticed the coolant reservoir is frequently emptied but my temperature guage always reads normal engine temperature i.e it doesn't go beyond the middle mark. What could be happening?
There is nothing in what you describes that confirma your engine is overheating.

If you have a leak in your cooling system, your reservoir will constantly run out of water and the steam from the leak will make your engine bay appear slightly hotter than usual.

Look for the leak, fix it and save that engine.

How do you mean by burning oil? If you mean the oil running out fast, I'd say No.
I did servicing 2nd week of December last year before I traveled to the East for the Yuletide and now it's just a lil above the second line on the dipstick. I use the car for e-hailing too.
Then stick with the Mobil oil you have been using.

Your car is doing just fine with it.

Change it regularly since you do e hailing.

Check your owners manual for frequency which correlates to the type of driving you do.

NUJABEZ:
I recently bought a Tokunbo Acura MDX 2007. Given its rated fuel efficiency of 15mpg for city driving, I analysed my movement and thought it was okay and that I could shoulder the fueling expenses.

However, my issue now is that I don't get up to 5mpg. I filled my tank yesterday, 88 liters to fill, drove to Yaba, Victoria Island, Ajah, and back to Ikeja, a journey of 130 kilometres and the fuel has run out.

Given the 15mpg rating, I should still have more than a third of the tank or at least half, but the tank is empty.

I have to refuel every two to three days and it's not sustainable.

Please I need suggestions on what to do. The car hasn't been serviced except for oil and filter change, brakes and tires. Why is the vehicle consuming too much petrol?
130kms or miles?
Unless yours is candian, mdx odometer is calibrated in miles.

Now here are a few things to do.
1. Make sure none of your brakes are binding. Check by feeling your brake discs after about 30 minutes of driving. If any is too hot to touch, then that's the culprit.
2. Check your alignment..make sure it's set up properly
3. Keep off the go pedal. The mdx moves. It moves. Most owners are often tempted to stomp on that accelerator whenever there is a space in front of them. Resist that urge. It's a 3.7 liter V6 pulling more that 2 tons of weight. So it will burn quite some fuel to get going.
Keep your rpms below 2200. Gear changes occur at this rpm during normal driving.
Resist the temptation to stomp the pedal.
4. Learn to cost to stops rather than braking late and hard. Coasting to stops saves fuel. Stomping on the brake pedal wastes fuel.
5. Scan your car and fix the issues surrounding emissions. Tune up the car. Check your injectors for abnormal spray or stuck open conditions. Replace spark plugs if worn. Replace coils if bad.

I believe if you do all this, you will be fine.

The worst mpg I ever got with mine is 12mpg and that caused by Lagos traffic. I average 14mpg in Lagos traffic and 16mpg in pH traffic.

I have averaged 23mpg on a grandpa cruise on the highway( never exceeded 80km/hr) and 18mpg is usual on my travels.

A full tank usually gives me 280miles in the city and 360 miles highway.

i was just bewildered that the company charged the guy 90k
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Here are a few things you should consider.
1. Replacement cost of that engine.
A bad filter or fake oil installed by kamoru under the mango tree will set that man back by a few million. Not wise in this economy

That shop will replace that engine if they mess up so they charge a premium for that (unwritten insurance)

2. That edifice with ac and possibly chilled water cost a few penny to put up.
Someone has to pay for it. Customers.
Rent in that location is not 500k per annum.

3. ROI. Money has to be made. Profit has to be made. It's business.

4. Convenience. It is definitely convenient for that man. He is not complaining.

5. Cost of original oil, filter and labour.
Oil is not cheap. A good 5L synthetic oil (which is what I assume they used) will set you back at least about 36k to 40k. Two of that is already 72k to 80k. Add labour and filter to it and you see why 90k is just about okay.

Was it that 90k is too expensive for an oil change or are you saying the owner of the gx460 is going to hell for spending 90k on an oil change when there are hungry people outside or that the gx460 owner was cheated?

I repeat, no gx460 uses 10quarts of oil which is 2 gallons of synthetic oil. It uses 7quarts which is 1 and half. Next service, only 1 gallon will be needed.
May I add that the OCI is not determined by the oil seller but by your vehicle manufacturer.

Cars that do one year OCI usually have larger oil pans to accommodate larger oil volumes that will Carter to the long OCI.

Kia owners know the shege they faced when they ran synthetic in their engines for one year against the recommended OCI.

Keeping rpms as low as possible is what minimalizes fuel consumption.. Resist the temptation to "fire down" because as you dey fire down dey do kick-down upandan so, na your fuel dey evaporate so grin

If you know what you are doing, and your car is fit, you can maintain speeds of 140km/hr with less than 2.7k RPM.

I personally don't exceed 2.5k Rpm at any point in time, unless I need to do some long and quick overtaking.. And within that 2.5k Rpm band, I easily reach up to 150km/hr....if overdrive kicks in, it gets lower than 2k RPM sometimes at 140kph..Though it helps that the car engine is a very healthy V6.

Long story short.. The higher your car's Rpm, the higher the fuel consumption
What car is this?
Car Talk / Re: Does Driving Slowly Reduce Fuel Consumption? by 9icetoo(m): 11:47pm On Jan 08, 2023
Timagex:
From my own experience, these are fuel saving tips.
1. Drive slowly sensibly. Accelerate gently. Imagine you have an egg under the accelerator. You definitely burn more fuel when you throttle down.
2. If you are doing highway driving, wind up your windows. If your windows are down, the car drags. You might not notice, but, it tells on fuel.
3. Avoid carrying load. The heavier the car, the more power(fuel) needed to keep it moving. Thats why drivers charge you extra for loads and uber drivers frown when you tell them to open their booth.
4. If you drive manual, learn how to put the car on neutral and ease it along when you are driving down a slope. On EFI cars which virtually everyone drives now, your ecu will cut out fuel when you are going downhill and there is no throttle input at certain speeds , gearing and degree of slope.
5. Avoid abrupt acceleration. You know when you scale a speed bump and you need to accelerate? Do it gently. Be easy on your throttle.
6. These are the ones I remember for now.
7. Drafting. Staying behind large vehicles at highway speeds will shield your vehicle from wind draft saving you gas cause your vehicle isn't working too hard pushing all that air out of the way. It is dangerous though.
8. Tune up your vehicle. Make sure your alignment is okay and you don't have binding brake calipers.
9. Inflate your tyres properly. This will reduce your rolling resistance.
10. Roll to stops and avoid heavy braking as much as you can
