Grupo: Please what should they specifically check out for when checking the high and low pressure.
I want to order a guage and try out some DIY project using the car. As I don't trust the local mechanics here. They may make the issue worse for me. They only know how to fill gas and tell you to convert to manual compressor. I believe the low side should be between 30 and 40 psi with engine running. If it is lower, you may be low on refrigerant. The high side should be between 200 and 250 psi. If it is higher, you may have a bad expansion valve or weak compressor. If it is higher, you may have a blocked condenser or failing fan or blocked inline filter or pinched discharge line. Ambient temps may affect these figures slightly. |

The only thing I noticed was that when I newly got the car ,on early morning cold starts there was usually steam kinda coming out from exhaust even water droplets but they worked on the cat system and after that the steam is usually kinda faint on cold morning start or even unoticeable....
Pls is it the work of panel or mechanic to actually inspect for any leaks and possibly a fix ? What "work" did they do on your catalyst? Did they work on the catalyst or on the muffler? Where you present during the "work"? |

Grupo: I have changed the cabin air filter. Still the same. Check the high side and low side pressure. Get a competent ac tech who has the manifold gauge to do this. It should be done in the afternoon (to replicate your symptoms). He will be able to determine if your issue if from the compressor or condenser. |

revelation2013: Passing Mile 2 towards LASU / Okokomaiko / Badagry will make you hate FRSC... The way that road is constructed favours them. They said a newly bought Tokunbo tire has expired and they gave me a ticket of 3k. I brought out my card to pay, only for them to say I will go and pay in the office because it was weekend. I entered the car, thank God I didn't switch off. I zoomed off when they think I just wanted to pick my phone.
Infact one of them said because it was weekend, my vehicle will be in their office and I will come pick it on Monday after I have paid to Bank. I zoomed off.
What would one do in such a situation guys? First, know the law. There is no fine for expired tyre. Only a fine for worn out tyre. Secondly, impound is not a penalty for worn out tyre. Lastly, patience. Never show them you are in a hurry. Demand the ticket and the applicable fine, leave your documents wjth them and go and pay the fine. Yoy can pay online through your app via remitta. Never hand over cash to any FRSC personnel. |

Car Talk › Re: the Engine Oil Mistake Many Nigerian Car Owners Are Still Making by 9icetoo(m): 1:04pm On Jan 31 |
GidiTronics: Good morning everyone. One recurring question among mechanics and vehicle owners is: Which engine oil grade actually works best in Nigerian traffic? Not on paper, but on our roads, under our heat, fuel quality, traffic jams, and maintenance habits. In Nigeria, engines spend more time crawling than cruising. Long idling in traffic, bad road surfaces, dusty environments, high ambient temperatures, and inconsistent fuel quality all place extra stress on engine oil. Oil that performs well in cooler or smoother environments often degrades faster here. Simply put in very plain terms: Engine oil is like blood. If it becomes too thin under heat or too thick when cold, engine parts begin to suffer. That is why oil grade means both viscosity and API service classification, not brand name. A common mistake Nigerians make is assuming thicker oil protects better. This belief has damaged many modern engines. Another mistake is using the same oil grade for all vehicles, regardless of engine design, year, or traffic exposure. Below are practical examples based on Nigerian driving realities, not theory. For 2003–2007 models, 1ZZ-FE petrol engines, These engines were designed with relatively tight internal clearances. 10W-30 API SL or SM is healthy for these engines and 10W-40 API SM for higher-mileage engines frequently used in traffic. Using 20W-50 often causes slow oil circulation during cold starts and increases internal wear over time. For 2007–2011 models, 2AZ-FE petrol engines, This engine runs hot, especially in traffic. Use 5W-30 API SM or SN for well-maintained engines or 10W-40 API SN for higher mileage or traffic-heavy use. For 2008–2012 models, 2.4L petrol engines, This engines rely heavily on quick oil flow. Use 5W-30 API SN or 10W-30 API SN. Using 20W-50 here often leads to valve noise, poor fuel economy, and long-term wear. For 2006–2015 diesel engine models, Diesel engines tolerate thicker oil but still suffer under heat. Use 15W-40 API CI-4 or CH-4, and 10W-40 API CI-4 for mixed urban and highway use. For older petrol vehicles 1995–2002 models, These engines generally have wider tolerances. Use 15W-40 API SL and 20W-50 API SJ or SL, mainly when engines already consume oil For modern engine models 2019-present. Use 5W-30 API SP. API SP is currently the perfect specification for all modern engines. From field experience, oils that maintain viscosity under heat and prolonged traffic tend to protect engines better in Nigeria. This is where products like Zone 4 Engine Oils sometimes come up in professional discussions, not as hype, but as examples of oils formulated with heat stability and consistency in mind for harsh operating conditions. Again, engines do not fail because of brand names. They fail because of wrong grades, fake products, poor service intervals, and misunderstanding Nigerian operating conditions. I invite experienced mechanics, technicians, dealers, and long-term vehicle users to contribute corrections, field observations, and technical insights. Constructive discussion helps all of us make better decisions and keep engines alive longer on Nigerian roads. So the 2AZFE started in 2007? When you say cold start? How cold? What's the viscosity before engine damage occurs (lets assume we are discussing the 2AZFE)? What oil pressure do you expect to see in a 2AZFE and what oil pressures do the different multigrade oils (assuming API spec is the same) attain after the engine has reached operating temperature? |

3 years on Austone and no complaints at all...Tyre wear is minimal and zero monkey business going on...
Brand new Linglong tyres came on an 08 accord that just fell into my hands ...3 months on and I am still watching them cautiously..no complaints for now
But now, I won't touch a fairly used tyre with a 10-foot pole...There is almost always something going on with those tyres...Like someone said, our warehouse billionaire brethren have turned the fairly used tyre business in Nigeria into a poisoned chalice... 15k miles monthly? Dwarfgod: 15m tukonbo Suv car will mostly be boring one except for 2010-2013 mdx but you are a first time car owner. You might not understand acura, not like it's a rocket science but they need attention.
I will advice you to go for 2013 to 2015 rx350 Nigerian drive. They are so many of them for sales. You chances of getting a good one is above 70% if you calm down and take your time. Hint to get a better one 1.) Low mileage not more than 100kmiles 2.) Don't ever accept one which the fan is connected to run always. Chances of sludge is higher. 3.) Verify the mileage online to be sure it's not rolled back or severe accidented car/flooded. 4.) Look underneat for oil leaks. Rear main seals etc. 5.) Timing valve cover leaks. 6.) Don't buy upgraded ones with china bumpers and headlights. 7.) Go with a car scanner to scan the car for possibly transmission code or engine code 8.) Then lastly is interior neatness/body/windows/ door locks/radio/speakers and test driving to check gear movement and engine sound on high rpm.
Why i am recommending this 2013-2015 rx350 for you is because you will enjoy the value of your money/prestige and won't feel like changing the car very soon in less than 2years.
Note: get one with AWD. How to know? It will have a big pad that looks like a computer mouse and a lock differential buttion close to heated and ventilation seat button. 15m to get a low mileage 2013-2015 tokunbo RX350? Hmmmmm. OP oya, you can commence the wild goose chase. Get the 2007 to 2013 acura mdx if you dont mind the fuel consumption. Other options are 1. 2013 hyundai santa fe 2. 2013 acura rdx 3. 2012 highlander (you go add small money) 4. 2010 Mercedes GLK 350 (you go add small money 5. 2012 Toyota rav4 |

Kalulu44: See Mr BluntCrazeMan, I just want to use this your story to corroborate mine and many other things in the hands of uniform men in Nigeria. I used to tell people, if you're clean and innocent you won't be harrased by our uniform men anyhow. And also if your documents wether be it vehicle or work own are up to date, you will feel confident to stand up to them. I used to shake my head whenever some people say they pay huge amount of money to police or whatever even though no incriminating thing was found on them. That's a lie bro or sis. Some of you pay this money bcus you are either in a hurry or have some illegal things in your phones or possession. . Let me tell you a little about myself. I'm 45 now and just retired from commercial bus driving earlier this year. In my 20yrs of driving on Lagos road, I have never gone to a police station and stay more than 20 or 30min before case is settled. I don't know how FRSC or VIO offices look like except seeing them from the road. So how do I manage to avoid their wahala and shenanigans, simply put. Make sure all your papers and driver's license are up to date. Everything you know road safety will disturb you with, get them. And you will be confident to stop for them and then go when they have found you clean. . Now having my documents up to date doesn't mean I don't settled or bribe them at times. The cus of this settlement is when one is in a hurry to meet up with your trips especially during rushing hour to pick passengers. And secondly passengers sometimes make you bribe them with "abeg oga no delay us we dey go work". But honestly if I have their time and not too in hurry. I always park and let them check whatever they want to check. Like for example, there was a time a serious traffic was at the express of between national theatre to Orile bus stop in Lagos. So many vehicles were taking the alternate route of brewery along Indomie company. So I took there, only for some policemen to start collecting #500 from us. When it got my turn, I told them I can only afford #200. They said no way and told me to park. I wanted to cause obstruction but decided against it knowing full well how police behave. . So I parked, the usual shout from passengers that I should pay them and let's go now didn't get to me. Cus it was evening time and that was my last trip for the day. One of the police man came to meet me again and said howfar, wey your #500. I told him I don't have both the #500 and even the #200 I suggested earlier. He said ok, he's coming for me that my vehicle must reach station today and I will pay times ten of what he asked from me. I just laughed it off. Then someone tapped me among the passengers and said, oga this one you're confident like this. Are all your documents complete, I nodded yes and he came down, went straight to one of the policemen and told them to come attend to me before anything. They were reluctant, cus they intend on delaying me till when they will take me away. . But the man showed them his ID and lo he was a lawyer. He told them if they don't attend to us on time he will take the matter serious. One of the oga police came to where I was parked and said "shebi you don go call lawyer for us, just pray make any of your papers no complete first". He then asked me my papers and driver's license. I confidently gave him everything. After some minutes perusing everything and trying to come with one excuse, he couldn't find any. He then gave me back my papers, and said I should bring the #200 I wanted to give them earlier. Before I tried to say something, the lawyer has already said it on my behalf. No way is he going to give you anything after all the time wasting. . Me I just laughed, tell my passengers to board and we moved. Along the way, the lawyer told the passengers that they shouldn't always be in hurry. That it's due to being in a hurry that policemen used in extorting drivers. And also how he wish all commercial buses have complete papers like me. So guys, in Nigeria just be clean and original and you won't be harrased anyhow by our force men God bless you and bless your retirement plans. We can still save this country. |
Car Talk › Re: My Ugly Experience With FRSC Officials At Their Checkpoint by 9icetoo(m): 10:10am On Nov 08, 2025 |
BluntCrazeMan: This happened to me in Awka, Anambra State. (Those officers didn't know that they met with a strong-headed but quiet somebody)
For those persons who know Awka very well, this thing happened at that Military Checkpoint which is very close to the ICC center, along the old road.
On this particular day in question, the FRSC officers were also operating near this Military Checkpoint in question. They usually do that on some days.
They stopped me for no obvious reasons, and I parked one side, so that I wouldn't be seen as disobeying the officers of an instituted authority while they are on their legal duty. They demanded for my papers which I gave to them, and they checked everything and gave the papers back to me.
They demanded that I opened my car boot (my car trunk). After they finished all their searchings and checkings (they even checked the spare tyres and jack and triangles), they later said that my Fire Extinguisher 🧯 has expired, that its pointer is not pointing within the green range on its indicator.
I said “Ok,, so what next”?
They started booking me (for the offence they said I committed). I stood there quietly and silently, and waited for them to finish.
(if the officer had taken me to the back of the car early enough, and wanted to settle my matter quickly, I might have considered settling myself with them there-and-then in order to be on my way as quickly as possible,, but since they have decided to waste my time on protocols, then I decided that we must do the protocols to the end, and they won't get any shii-shii from me -- whatever money I have to pay, it must be to the headquarters, and not to them again.)
After they finished wasting all my time while they booked me, they came and told me that I should pay ₦12,000.
I said “Okay”. I didn't even argue. He then said that I should pay to them so that they can help me and pay it for me.
That was when I started my own wahalla..
I said to them that I won't give them shii-shii.. I will pay the ₦12,000.. No Problems. But I must pay it directly into the FRSC Headquarters’ Bank Account.. AND NO TO THEM.!! The officer directed me to their oga.
I was laughing at all of them inside my heart.
Their oga said I should leave my vehicle there with them and go to any bank which is close-by, and that the bank will generate Remita code for me, before I can pay. He told me that it is usually long process, and that is the reason why they usually opt to do it for the people, so that they can lump all the money together at the end of the day and generate one Remita Code..
I now laughed-out.. I couldn't hold the laugh any longer. He asked me why I was laughing,, I just showed him my phone. I had already logged-in to the Remita App on my phone while he was still talking,, and I had even found the FRSC on the Remita App..
I told them that I will make the payment directly to the REMITA, and generate the receipt right in front of them, and go and find a printer anywhere, and print it out and give to them, and that the whole thing wouldn't even waste 15-Minutes.!!
The officer told me that it seems that I am a person of trouble.!! I told him “No oooo!!”
I then told him that before I make the payment, that I need to read the content of the document which they used to book me.. He gave it to me, and I finished reading it. I saw the offence they said that I committed, but I didn't see where they wrote any amount that corresponded to the offence. They didn't even write “₦12,000” on top of that document..
I asked him how he knew that my offence is equal to ₦12,000? I told him to write it on top of that booking document.. The rule I broke and the corresponding penalty to it,, then, a summation at the bottom which shows how much I should pay.
That was how I started teaching the officer how to book people properly for offences. He was visibly not comfortable that I had all the time in the world to waste with him.
I told him that: “it is either he gave me my own duplicate-copy of the booking document, or else I take a photograph of the booking, I would print out and keep inside my archive of payment-receipts -- which helps me whenever I am doing my financial audits”
He shouted “haaaaa.!! That one will be difficult ooo” I asked them whether it is also difficult for them to give me my own duplicate copy?? And they said “YES”,, that they don't usually give it out..
I was visibly enraged.. I asked them: “How can I be paying for something I don't even know how it came about, and yet, there is no evidence for me to keep -- which confirmed that I paid for such a thing??”
I now demanded for them to also show me the the book or booklet that contains the schedule or the rundown of all the possible offences that someone can possibly commit and all their respective penalties -- so that I can snap photos of them too, because I need to know all these offences and study them very well, so that I won't commit another offence again another day.
The Oga said to me,, Oga, please bring ₦3,000 and go your way abbegg.. I told him that I don't even have ₦500 cash on me.. But I can do the ₦12,000 to Remita, because it is wireless. They told me to go and do POS and give them the ₦3000 cash, but I refused. I had to tell them that they had wasted my time so much to an extent that everything must have to be fully done accordingly in accordance to the strict protocols, and therefore, let us do the whole protocols to the end.
I then told them that I also even needed to snap the photos of the document which they used to charge me,, and to also snap photos of their main book which contained the list of all possible traffic offences..
The next thing he said was: “Oga, come and be going abbegg.!!”
I was like,, “After you finished wasting all my time.?? What about the booking nko?”
They said that they will tear it., that it is no more necessary again.
I still pestered them further, that the reason they wanted me to go just like-that is because they wouldn't want me to know all the other hidden traffic offences, so that they will catch me another day.. I told them that they should get the document which contained all the traffic offences so I can have a look at it; but they told me that they didn't come to the field with it, that the document is at their office, that I can drive to their office and demand for it.
That was when I got back inside my vehicle, started my vehicle, and dropped one parting word for them: “This nonsense you people did to me is the exact reason why nobody likes to stop whenever they see you guys on the road.. This thing you are always do to people is the exact reason why a lot of people end-up seeing you guys as grossly unprofessional in your dealings with the people,, and it is too baadd..”
AND I DROVE OFF,, AND LEFT THEM..!!
What pained me most (after I left there) was that I didn't even take time and look around chests and shoulders of those officers to see whether I can get their names and their service numbers..
It would have made it very easy for me to report them to their headquarters, without having to waste too much time in explaining their identities..
Assuming that I ended up paying that ₦12,000 on Remita, I would have vehemently insisted on taking the photographs of both the original booking and the duplicate copy which is supposed to be my own,, and I will find @FRSCNigeria on Twitter and on all social media, and even their Official Email Address, and I will continue to send them messages -- until someone responds to me.
That day was almost totally wasted for me. I spent like two hours there,, arguing back-and-forth with them.. The experience was so bad.!!
It even turns out that many Nigerians are suffering exactly the same thing in the hands of FRSC Officials... And some of them have come up here on Nairaland to tell their own stories too.. See an example inside the thread below.. 👇🏾 👇🏾 https://www.nairaland.com/7702932/ordeal-frsc-officers-car-fire

MY DEAR FELLOW NIGERIANS,, AS YOU ARE READING THIS EXPERIENCE OF MINE, PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE REMITA APP RIGHT NOW, AND ACTIVATE IT IMMEDIATELY.
WHEN NEXT THE FRSC OFFICERS HOLD YOU DOWN ON THE ROAD FOR ANY TRAFFIC OFFENCE -- (EVEN BEFORE THEY START BOOKING YOU) -- JUST TELL THEM IMMEDIATELY THAT YOU HAVE REMITA ON YOUR PHONE, AND THAT IT IS THROUGH REMITA THAT YOU MUST PAY ANY OF THE PENALTY THEY WOULD BOOK YOU FOR; AND THAT YOU WILL GO AND PRINT THE RECEIPTS OF THE REMITA-PAYMENT FOR THEM TO USE AND CONFIRM WITH THE ABUJA HEADQUARTERS. AND THEN, ALSO INSIST THAT THEY MUST BREAK DOWN ALL THE FEES OF THE PENALTIES FOR YOU, AND GIVE YOU A COPY OF THE BREAKDOWN..
WITH THAT, THEY WILL HANDLE YOUR CASE IN THE MOST ORGANIZED AND PROFESSIONAL MANNER.. Good job. We need more people like you. |

The 180km is not Nigerian speed limit. We already have official speed limit, that's the bad spots on the high way. Highlander can not get to 140km without vibrating and in some cars, the engine will trip off warning you not to do pass yourself. When you see those inter state transport buses involved in road crashes caused by burst tyres, you will understand the underlying reason that motorists uses the C tyres thinking that it is stronger than other tyres and so you find Sienna also using C tyres. A lot of Mercedes owners have complained about their cars tripping off on the highway when their tyres cannot withstand the speed of the car. If by looking at the tyre from my office, I could tell you that it was a traction A, and an S rating, you should know that there is nothing more to talk about. I am not ruining your business of selling your tyres by bringing to your attention that the tyre is not supposed to be bought by a supposedly enlightened guy who is anxious to pass the tyre to another guy. . You never cease to amaze. You are still here yapping about what you know nothing about. You have been schooled countless times on this and other topics yet you do not want to learn. Mack suffered to the point that Mechanics were advising people to buy the older version without the rotors. Go to Olodi Apapa and ask for the brand. This was not Dangote Diesel fault but there should be visible improvement in all diesel trucks. DHL supply chain went bankrupt because the diesel then available destroyed the fleet of brand new trucks in the company. Their Mechanic was an American with latest diagnostic tools but the trucks failed. For fuel specs, we don't need to test it, just go to the port and buy fuel in a car coming out of the port and check engine light will come on. And his company claimed that they were producing euro 5 fuel. Do the arithmetics 1. New macks failed not cos of diesel quality but cos of dpf and quality of engine oil used. They require low ash (SAPS) oil. Owners and mechanics here just didn't know how to maintain them. Google low SAPS oil. Same owners were throwing Total Rubia S into their trucks. 2. Same truck owner mechanics will advice car owners to discard efi and use carburetor. Do the maths. 3. Do you even own a fleet or a single truck or are you basing this on them say, them say? 4. Where did the "new mack" owners buy their diesel? Who were their suppliers? Do you know where their suppliers get their diesel? Cos you see this diesel supply business eh, e go shock you. Nothing is as it seems. Leave that side. Na another school entirely. 5. Dangote trucks do not run on imported diesel. Julius berger trucks do not run on imported diesel. sooperrescue: Audio export. I have been happy for truck owners about the diesel fuel currently in the country that they will drive in peace. He said that his rotor just failed and he is trying to fix it. Dangote Diesel can not power a Mack truck. All Mack trucks are completely off our roads because of the diesel. Lanre shittu used to be the sole representative for Mack Truck but they have diversified to Chinese trucks and it's the same truck that we were told to convert the engine to mitsubishi canter engine. We need to be up and ask questions. The Benz GLK is now very sluggish in movement and the fuel is killing the car. Dangote fuel can never enter the US. The way you confidently spew rubbish amazes me. Have you taken a sample of dangote product to a reputable lab to analyse it? If Dangote comes for you, can you survive? Truck rotors fail even in the mighty USA with the best diesel. They are electromechanical devices. They fail. They are not perfect. And some of the h its here in nigeria has seen hundreds of thousands of miles. Fleet owners are actually happier now than before. Diesel quality has actually improved tremendously. Mack trucks are still everywhere in the country. Fleet owners have bought newer trucks. Do you know how old some of those Mack trucks were? Sino, howo, and other Asian brands offered credit facilities and payment plans to many Fleet owners who ditched their older less efficient Mack trucks for the newer Asian models. That's what happened. Dangote has been exporting and will continue to export. The refinery was actually built to export as well as serve domestic needs. It wasn't build it to meet "nigerian" quality. |

sooperrescue: Dangote is euro 5, Nnpc was Euro 4 but from 2010 cars, it is Euro 6 fornewerengines. So we're still under the poor fuel . Peugeot cars are going back to France because the 508, 308 cannot function properly with the type of fuel Dangote is selling and funny enough, Dangote owns Peugeot. The Peugeot is not going back cos of dangotes fuel. Thank you. |

Why then did the OP say we are still using Euro 2/3 fuel in your writeup? The fuel at the pumps in nigeria today is from dangote. What's the octane rating of dangote fuel? The difference in sulphur levels between euro 5 and euro 6 is not enough to damage your fuel injectors. For diesel equipment that use dpf, maybe and its highly debatable. I like OPs posts. They are quite educational. I hope he doesnt spoil it by making wild claims. |

Fuel Quality Awareness – Nigeria vs The World
Current Situation in Nigeria: • Still using Euro 2/3 fuel (1,000–1,500 ppm sulfur, 91–93 RON). • The world has moved to Euro 5/6 fuels (10 ppm sulfur, 95–98 RON).
⸻
What This Means for Modern Cars (2007+) • Wrong or dirty fuel = long-term damage. • Designed for Euro 5/6 → struggling on Euro 2/3.
Major Risks: • 🔧 Engine knocking (low octane) • 🔧 Clogged injectors (dirty fuel) • 🔧 Catalytic converter failure (high sulfur) • 🔧 Oxygen sensor damage • 🔧 High fuel consumption
⸻
Warning Symptoms for Drivers • 🚨 Engine check light on • 🚨 Loss of power / sluggish acceleration • 🚨 Hard starting or stalling • 🚨 Excessive smoke from exhaust • 🚨 Poor fuel economy
⸻
Our Diagnostic Support
At Ryan Automotive Limited, we: • Run computerized fuel system diagnostics • Scan for knock sensor, O2 sensor, injector errors • Advise on preventive solutions & fuel additives • Help owners protect modern cars in a low-quality fuel market

Car Talk › Re: Avoid Being Booked By FRSC Or VIO; Learn When Your Vehicle Tyre Is Expired Here by 9icetoo(m): 1:18pm On Sep 24, 2025 |
onlinediva: It is a known fact that car tyres expire. Tyres are made of rubber, and rubber degrades with age and temperature, whether used or not.
Only a few Nigerians were aware that vehicle tyres come with expiry dates. Some drivers, as Naijadriva observed, with years of driving experience, do not know how to read the age of a tyre, thereby buying expired tyres, whether new or fairly used ones. For the fairly used ones, even though you don't expect to buy one within a four-year life, you may see a driver buying a tyre that has expired since 2005!
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps [FRSC], expired tyres account for many road accidents nationwide.
So, how can one tell if one’s tyres have attained their expiry dates?
First, vehicle tyres have a 4-year validity period from their Date of Manufacture (DOM) (though some Safety groups in some countries recommend six years).
However, considering our peculiar rough driving terrains and our temperate climate, it makes a lot of sense to agree with the FRSC recommendation of four years. After the validity period, the tyres risk getting burst while in use, especially when running in hot weather.
To find out if your tyres are expired, first look at the sidewall or the surface of the tyre; you will find a stamp that looks like this: (*4708*). There is an asterisk at the beginning and end of this number (although some tyres don’t have asterisks).
The last four numbers identify the tyre's date of manufacture to the nearest week. That is, the first two digits represent the week of manufacture, while the last two digits represent the year of manufacture.
You can also get more insightful details and comments of members along with illustrative pictures about this topic by clicking here => https://www.autosandcartalk.com/threads/how-to-tell-if-your-tyres-of-your-vehicle-are-expired.22/ Do they really? I know you like engagements. Your moniker suggests so. However, haft truths and misinformation aren't necessary to get the engagements you crave. Tyres do not come with expiry dates. No tyre manufacturer has made a tyre with expiry dates. Do more research before you lead people astray. |
Car Talk › Re: Toyota Gurus, Why Is The Toyota Gears Failing? by 9icetoo(m): 1:14pm On Sep 24, 2025 |
RyanAutomotive: Here’s a strong, professional reply in Ryan Automotive Limited’s voice:
⸻
Greetings, 👋🏽
You’ve raised a very important point. Over the years, we’ve seen Toyota gearboxes (both automatic and CVT types) develop issues that give the brand a reputation for gear failures. The reality is: 1. Electronic Control Evolution – From the late 1990s onward, Toyota moved from simple hydraulic systems to more advanced electronically controlled transmissions (13-pin, 30-pin, etc.). While this improved efficiency and fuel economy, it also made the gearboxes more sensitive to heat, poor maintenance, and fluid quality. 2. Improper ATF Usage – Many failures trace back to using the wrong transmission fluid. Toyota ATF WS (World Standard) is mandatory for most modern models, yet many workshops substitute it with Dexron III or other oils, which shortens gearbox life. 3. Neglected Service Intervals – Owners are often told Toyota transmissions are “sealed for life.” In reality, the fluid should be replaced every 40,000 – 60,000 km under Nigerian driving conditions. Failure to do this leads to overheating and premature wear. 4. Used Gearbox Imports – Most “tokunbo” (foreign used) gearboxes already have high mileage before arriving here. By the time they’re resold, they’re often at the end of their lifespan — hence the high failure rate and expensive replacements like you mentioned (₦3.5m for RX 350, ₦2.5m for Highlander).
The Way Forward: • Always insist on the correct ATF WS fluid. • Carry out preventive maintenance at the right intervals. • Use professional diagnostic tools to address early warning signs instead of waiting until total failure. • When replacement is unavoidable, consider professional rebuilds rather than risky “unknown history” used gearboxes.
At Ryan Automotive Limited, our focus remains on helping Toyota and Lexus owners avoid costly surprises through precision maintenance and transparent guidance.
— Ryan Automotive Limited 🚘🔧 Precision. Transparency. Excellence. As simple as it should be. May i add introduction of debris during shaft replacements and trans fluid changes. These are some of the major culprits. More grease to your elbow. |

sooperrescue: It seems you are just looking for trouble with yourself. Face the oil. Castrol edge Euro oil is for which vehicle? Helix shell CT 3 and Mobil ESP is recommended for Toyota or Honda? When the ESP was introduced, it was recommended for Peugeot 508 because that was the closest to the Total Ineos which was not available then. I have not seen your input on the oil because you want to be given free lessons. I have never claimed to be an authority on oil but fixing range Rovers and rebuilding engines since 2014, I am experienced to talk about oil and the damage it is doing to our vehicles. Even the liqui Molly he posted, how many cars use 0w30? I only spoke for range rover brand and that Castrol edge in the thread might be suitable for 1976 range rover and not the 2025 oil requirements. You applaud the post because you have no idea what is required for a car to endure the vagaries of the Nigerian auto market. Lesson for today, Toyota Corolla 2008, show us which of these oils are recommended to be used for the Corolla? Show us any gasoline engine only oil in the list or... Toyota corolla 2008 does not require synthetic oil. The pictures OP put up there are at variance with some of the oils named in his write up. You ought to be able to read or you prefer pictures and colouring books? Every car owner should read his owners manual to identify the oil his engine requires. Multigrade oils have a complex behaviour. I wont teach you that here. The recommendations by oems are also not strictly about engine health. Some also factor in fuel economy in order to meet to EPA mandates and other European standards. You ought to know this. Fake oils kill engines faster than minor differences in oil weights. An engine which has 5w30 recommended for it will run perfectly fine with 10w30. The difference in viscosity between the 5 and 10 in our environment is miniscule and inconsequential. The oil will still flow fine with almost the same pressure and flow rate at cold start. We are in the tropics!!! Cars driven in nigerian cities qualify for "severe driving" conditions and as such should be service even more often than recommended. We drive in dusty, hot, humid conditions and idle a lot in traffic. No one accounts for that idling time in traffic. It doesnt show on the odometer which we often use to calculate OCI. A lot of car owners exceed the OCI even before their usual 3 month oil change routine!!! OP was merely trying to show the advantages of synthetic oils over mineral oils. Stick to that. Owners should buy engine oils with the recommended API rating and weight. It doesnt have to be synthetic if synthetic is not recommended. And lastly, note that there is a difference between recommended and required. One is optional, the other is mandatory. That you repair replace range rover engines (terribly unreliable engines i might add) doesnt make you an authority on oils (i needed to repeat this). This will be my last response to this. Allow OP market his oil and if he turns out to be selling fakes, then we can drop the world on his head. |

sooperrescue: If Total Q5000 is one of the good synthetic oils in 2025, please let me scatter the thread. Thank you Is the picture of the Total Quartz 5000 the reason to condemn all other oils? You didn't even ask the OP to submit the spec sheets for these oils as a basis to validate your claim. When it comes to discussions about oils, stay away. You have proven countless times that you are not knowledgeable in that area. Rest. |
Car Talk › Re: Enquiry On Whether To Change The Type Of Oil Used Or The Rings Should Be Checked by 9icetoo(m): 7:34am On Sep 09, 2025 |
Grupo: How many kilometers or miles do you cover within 3 to 4 weeks? That's a more accurate way of determining how bad the oil consumption is. Just saying 3 to 4 weeks doesn't give any reasonable information.
Also, when topping off, what quantity of oil do you add? Do you add up to a liter?
Anyways, in every thing you do, never open your engine in the name of checking rings. Or that engine is gone.
Provide the information above. So we take it up from there. OP, before you go about buying any snake oil or tearing your engine apart, respond to this query. We can then proceed to proffer solutions. Cheers. |
