The problem I see with Nigerians or should I say Nairalanders for precision, is that most of you have a mentality of it's either our people is better or others are worse. It's either you are with us or totally against us.

And truth be told, I have observed this amongst the Yoruba and Igbo tribes, but that doesn't exclude other tribes in the country. People express illusion of grandeur when there is something good being talked about their tribe, and immediately transition into a defensive demon when something not so good is being said about their tribe.

We get it the Yoruba and Igbo people of Nairaland, your tribe is the best. Can we now move on to something productive and unifying for the interest of building our great nation?

Now to the Topic at hand, It is a great gesture from this young man and his sister to come back to their root and start a scholarship scheme in honour of their late father. These igbos are the most tribalistic and hate-filled people I've ever seen. Always priding themselves in some fable thoughts to just feel good about themselves. Always bad-mouthing others for no reason. I've travelled the length and breadth of this country and neighbouring countries and I tell you the Igbos are the worst people I have come in contact with.
They hate on other tribes, yet they are the ones who find it hard to stay in their region, just sit your ass in your region since you don't find anything good about other tribes. I believe this is a breach of contract. I don't know if your tenancy agreement has a clause that mandates him to pay such bills. If it doesn't however, there are certain terms of contracts which are called implied and usual terms. As such, even if not expressly provided for, payment of electricity bill by a tenant would usually be implied (except of cause he paid a service charge which accommodates that. I guess, this is not the case here).

Okay, back to the options open to you. Having said this is a breach, his failure to pay entitles you to start the process of taking back possession by giving him quit notice. If he doesn't give up possession after the expiration of this notice, you would need to go to court. I pray it doesn't get to this though. So, let's pray he comes for a 'talk' immediately he receives the quit notice.

Alternatively, you can institute an action for breach of contract, while claiming that amount as damages. As a caveat though, this option would only be worth it if the court awards you enough to pay your lawyer and the electricity bill at the end of the suit.

The above are at least two options open to you.
