Segedinho:Some people have that gift where some of their dreams come to pass, but there are charlatans as well. For the genuine ones, this is my own opinion: they might have got such information (the details of the dreams) unconsciously or consciously from another realm or from the subconscious part of the brain. I honestly don't think the physical realm is the only realm of existence, and based on some of my life experiences, it doesn't make sense to see this reality as the only realm in existence. It's because of some of the things I've experienced that I'm not an atheist. I think life is much deeper. That's my own view, or you can call it speculations because I don't think there are concrete scientific answers to that question yet. But there will be in the future. |
DissTroy:Lols, religious people thinking like a child always see everything as a religion or devotion to a god. What does sect have to do with atheism when atheists generally don't even share a set of beliefs or creed? Atheists, like agnostics, have and support various ideas and theories about life and reality. I'm sure Chelsea is also a sect to you, not a football club. Maybe, you see the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) that atheists mention jokingly online as a real entity (God). Lols. You're merely confusing yourself. |
Segedinho:It happens randomly or naturally for me. But some people say or claim they can stimulate it at will via meditation, use of entheogens or phychedelics (I don't like this risky method though and don't know if it works or not), and others. I've not been able to do OOBE at will, but whenever it happens, I engage in it consciously. It's like lucid dreaming, where one can consciously control or remember vividly some aspects of the dream. I don't want to discuss the topic further please. |
macjireh:It's not a belief. It's a position or a possibility (put mildly). |
There are various pieces of evidence in support of the Big Bang Theory, and it's the best theory that we have today explaining the origin of the Universe. This piece explains the theory: What is the Big Bang Theory? https://www.space.com/25126-big-bang-theory.html In the coming years, scientists will make a lot of progress on that theory because of the successful design and deployment of the most powerful telescope in the world and in history, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The JWST is parked in Lagrangian points in space and will peer back into our distant past to gather data about the the origin of the Universe. (Lagrangian points are areas in the Earth orbit with weak gravitational force reducing the fuel needed to maintain a satellite, telescope, and similar equipment.) In the coming years, the device will send its data back to the Earth for scientists to check and analyze. When it comes to the question of the origin of the Universe, scientists give us the best answers, which are refined and improved on daily with more and more discoveries. But the religious texts only give answers that look vague like childish tales, invoking one god or the other to account for the origin of the universe. The scientific method is better than the religious (divine) method because the former is open to questioning and skepticism, isn't based on dogmas, allows for objectivity, and is revised from time to time. The fact that what we know as humans pales in comparison with what we don't know doesn't necessitate the existence of a supernatural entity called God. Evolution is a well established phenomenon in science, and Neo-Darwinism is one of the most solid theories in science. Everything changes (evolves) over time, but evolution doesn't accurately account for the origin of life on Earth. My own position based on my research on the subject is that the following theories all account for the origin of life on this planet: 1. The Big Bang 2. Evolution 3. Intelligent Design 4. Panspermia (which states life began elsewhere in the Universe and was distributed by space dust, meteoroids, asteroids, comets, planetoids, and spacecraft) In the coming years, more advances will be made in these areas. By the time one delves deeper into how life began on Earth, one will realize that given the highly complex nature of life on this planet, there has to be an intelligent, self-conscious, and self-learning Mind (not a god or God) behind the scene. Even taking a mere look at the DNA, the genetic building block (code) of life, it's only natural to think there's an intelligent Mind responsible for the design of the code in the DNA. The level of complexity of the DNA, consciousness, brain, human body, planets, etc. is too high and the fine-tuning of certain aspects of nature (or constants of nature) too carefully done to say all this just occurred by chance. Still, that doesn't mean God exists or has to exist. Personally, I regard Existence as a self-conscious, intelligent, and self-learning system which humans, animals, planets, and other things in the Universe are all part of. In other words, humans, animals, planets, etc. each form a subset (a group, field, or ring with infinite elements) of an infinite, self-conscious, self-learning, and intelligent system or set called Existence. Then, I don't see the physical reality (world) as the only reality or realm in existence. Those of us that have had near-death experience, lucid dreams, out-of-body experience (OOBE) would have seen other realms of existence, worlds governed by laws of nature different from the physical world. (I recall when I'd an out-of-body experience for the first time in 2005, where I saw myself floating over my body, looking at myself lying on the bed; then, as a religious person, I thought death had come, and because I was scared, my consciousness quickly drifted back into my body, and I woke up in fright, praying fervently never to be in such a state. But now I know better that ours is just one of the many realms of existence, having had OOBE many times over the past decade. OOBE is like lucid dreaming and when one dies, it looks like OOBE at first. The only difference is that in death, one transitions permanently into another world or realm, not temporarily like in OOBEs. That's why our wise forefathers in Yoruba say ìkú dabi aajo aremabọ, meaning death is like a journey with no return. Having that experience (OOBE) is like going on a journey into space. OOBEs, like lucid dreaming, are a journey into oneself, the deepest corners of one's brain, which is one's inner world.) But these are personal experiences which can be subjective. Still, these phenomena suggest the existence of the multiverse. It's scientifically possible that ours is just one of the many (maybe infinite) universes in existence, and like theoretical physicists such as nobel laureate Roger Penrose posit, other universe(s) exists. But that's not an established fact in science yet. |
Havertz10:Nigeria's situation is a pathetic one, and things keep getting worse. Honestly, religion is a huge problem in this country, damages one's thinking, and is one of the major reasons behind the lack of development in Nigeria. It's a hopeless situation. |
Capaldi:I didn't refute that. It's an undeniable fact that the human body has many flaws. What I refuted is his assertion that anyone can design a human body. |
Chelsea sale: Roman Abramovich 'reaches agreement' with UK government over Todd Boehly deal. https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/news/chelsea-sale-roman-abramovich-deal-23989671 |
Havertz10:I agree with your post mostly, but the highlighted is a funny assertion. Even the smallest part of our body is extremely complex, let alone the whole human body. It would take the brightest human minds millions of years to design a human. I don't think you know the level of complexity of the brain, liver, lungs, etc. Our sciences are still primitive as oceans of mysteries remain unknown and undiscovered by researchers. I was writing a book on consciousness late last year, and by the time I delved deeper into the research of what consciousness is, I realized the problem of consciousness is really a hard one as Australian philosopher David Chalmers said. It would take years to develop a robust theoretical and mathematical basis for consciousness. At one point while working on the problem, it would look like I had cracked it, then the whole thing would look nebulous again. After reading various books on the subject, it dawned on me that to understand the problem of consciousness, one needs to gain a deep understanding of Quantum Physics, Electromagnetism, String and Superstring theories, Neuroscience, holographic duality theory, hypercomplex numbers, just to mention a few. The human body is extremely complex, and to understand what consciousness is, it would take scientists at least 200 years. Do you know the level of research done for the past 100 years and billions of dollars spent to develop the Standard Model, the most successful theory in Physics? If you do, you wouldn't have made that statement. I don't think you understand how complex our body, especially the brain, is. |
Oasis007:I am not an atheist, bro. I'm an agnostic, and heaven is a boring place that I don't even want to be in if it exists. Well, heaven and hell are states of mind anyway, i.e. they're mental states. |
Kimbeast:Yes. |
DissTroy:Gynominorphile sounds euphemistic, I'm sure our Muslim brothers will agree. It seems better than child fucker or pedophile, though the latter is really the right word to be sincere. |
DissTroy:What's the etymology of the word? |
Kholiwe:I responded to your posts critically keeping in mind the (religious) beliefs that guide them. I don't think you should rely on my opinion or objectivity to validate or invalidate your beliefs because in discussions like this I always promote the use of scientific method, reason, the local cultures (the good aspects), true history, and freethinking. |
Kholiwe:You said earlier you're a Christian. You said so yourself; I didn't put words in your mouth. Hence, I responded to your posts based on your religion (I know that's where your beliefs stem from) and the points you put forward in your posts. |
Unlimited22:Your problem is actually graver than I thought. It turns out you can't read and comprehend simple and clear statements in English. |
Unlimited22:He/she is a religious person. The reasonable thing to do is to discuss a religious issue with a religionist as who he/she is, a religionist, not as a freethinker (who he/she is not). If I find your post mischievous and insulting, I'd reply you in kind. It's not reasonable to swallow all the contents of any book or a text hook, line, and sinker. All books or texts are handiwork of man, and one only takes as true what's true based on merit and reason. |
Kholiwe:Lols. You're a religious person, and I know you people's reasoning is always controlled by the content of a book, even when the reality of things contradicts your beliefs. Abeg enough of religious discussion for me, just hold onto your beliefs while I hold onto reason. |
Kholiwe:Thanks for showing me a reasonable person can't trust your religious text since it's the handiwork of man (human reason). It didn't drop from heaven. |
Unlimited22:And those ones no be human? It's obvious there's a kind of damage reading and believing religious texts do to the brain. A smart person analyses any statement he reads in any book (whether religious, historical or philosophical) based on the merit of its claims. But the typical Nigerian, with their deeply ingrained inferiority complex, would analyze statements based on the author's nationality or race, without considering the merit (evidence for or against) of the claims. If it's from the whites and Arabs, then it's must be authentic and profound, but if it's from a fellow African, then it's must be devilish and evil. Anything foreign and European is superior and pleasing to slaves. |
Kholiwe:If you can't trust human reason, then how did you conclude rape, slavery weren't condemned in the past? If human reason can't be trusted, then nothing you say as a human can be trusted. |
Kholiwe:You asked me what makes me the judge of good acts even after I said right and wrong are subjective; yet you said, "Killing an enemy is right." What makes you the judge of that? Any sane person knows what's right and wrong. Kholiwe:When you realize the holy book you hold so dearly and your religion are both the handiwork of man, you'll understand these simple and clear issues. Morality, ethics, philosophy, religion, science, etc. are all man-made. That's a fact you need to deal with. |
... |
Kholiwe:Yes, that's true. You only need to read your Bible/Qur'an critically to see that your god, with his human-like traits, is also limited and fallible. In modern times, if not for civilization and exposure of the human race, a number of great people and scientists would have easily been deified and worshipped as God like the past humans worshipped as God today in religions were deified in the past (dark age). But humans are wiser and more enlightened now; some are even wiser than the gods of religion. |
Kholiwe:Moral relativism won't make rape, child marriage, slavery, ritual killing good acts. Just onto your beliefs while I hold onto reason and my philosophy. But be careful about what you advocate so that the evil you condone today doesn't come back to haunt you in the future. |
raumdeuter:Ordered by God . That's the main problem. And it's sad, people still have this caveman mentality in modern times. Reason should supersede following so-called God's orders. |
Kholiwe:Legal where? Specify the actual place. The world is wide, not a small village. Any god of religion started as a local god, whether it's Allah or Jehovah. And even though they're more popular these days due to colonialism, wars, invasions, trading, they're still local gods. |
Kholiwe:It's reality. You don't have to agree with it. I'm sure tomorrow when certain events happen that don't augur well for your religion or interests, you'll adopt another standard to justify your desires. A religionist like you has different standards for analysing issues, and your self-interest is what determines the particular standard you choose at any point in time, not the truth or advocating what's right. Hypocritical should be a synonym for religious. |
Kholiwe:You're generalizing to suit your narrative. Religious people are wont to twisting historical facts to suit their parochial agenda. |
Kholiwe:Yes, morality is a human invention, but religion is as well. But you, religious people, don't want to accept the simple fact that your religion (just like all aspects or concepts humans use or practice every day) is man-made. There's nothing divine in or about life. Like I said in the morning, acts like rape, child marriage, stealing, slavery were as bad in ancient times as they're in modern times. There has never been a point in history where all the cultures in the world agreed on a universal standard for what is right and what is wrong. Right and wrong are always subjective and relative with different perspectives going from one culture, species, country, or the other. And as human species (who are sentient and civilized), child marriage and rape are evil. We, as humans, are endowed with higher intellect compared with lesser animals, and as a species, our needs are identical. Hence, even though good and bad are relative and subjective; an average human (regardless of race, age or gender) would frown at an act that has adverse effects on their health and well-being and appreciate a deed that impacts their life positively. While there are grey areas when it comes to right and wrong, I don't see how that applies to rape, slavery, child marriage, ritual killing. Even in Muhammad's time, some people criticized child marriage and rape, just like in modern times, animal rights activists condemn killing of animals for food even though the majority of us presently consume organic meat. When slavery and slave-trading were at the peak in Asia, Europe, and Africa, some people condemned the practice. Slave abolitionism, agnosticism, atheism, etc, are as old as slavery, gnosticism, theism, etc. All good and bad acts done in human history (whether by the majority or minority) have their supporters and their critics. |
Ellexy:Don't mind them. Let them keep trivializing the issue. We're talking about a life-and-death issue, they're mentioning offside rules in football. |
