micflo28:Cats, snakes, thieves, children, bully turkey, diseases, cold, heat e.t.c Your job is to protect them from above. I invite a veterinarian for medicines & disease prevention. |
Alcapone001:I think the feeding schedule is ideal. They're adequately fed & I even over indulge their food wasting habits of using their claws to scratch into and scatter the feed. I let them do that till week 5 where I replace the flat tray with a waste-curbing feeder. I put the food twice, they don't eat twice. They eat, drink, jump, spar, sleep, eat again and do as they please. A hungry poult has the loudest hunger-voice that even your neighbors will hear. You'll always know if they are hungry. |
RolexOfGeneva: farouk2much:Thanks. Yes, prevention is key. Once in a while I let in a veterinarian check on them. Apart from the organics (ginger, garlic, aloe vera, bitter leaf etc) I gave them (the adults), the vet take care of the Meds. |
Eriokanmi: Chummynoni: ProphetJeroboam: InoGetJoy: richmondefosa:You're welcome. Turkeys are cool birds, highly social and can live up to 10 years. They remember people faces, those they like they greet, follow & sit close to, to play and get petted cuddled & stroked - they love that. They are capable of learning every detail in a place they live even when it's is a large area. They make lots of different sounds each for specific purpose, sometimes you might think it is from another animal that visited your farm. |
moneylam:Sorry man. I will give out half & keep half. |
Funny thing is I can't tell the males & females apart. The males don't gobble till 6 - 7 months, and both sexes can puff their feathers. I can only guess who is a male now if they are bigger in size or they decided to fan their tails. |
Week 5 update They're growing more feathers & that helps a lot in this harmattan.
|
Week 4 update The poults are now separated from their mothers. The mothers have done a good job raising them till this point. At one month old they are fairly easy to raise, they have passed the most fragile stage.
|
Week 3 update Poults getting bigger.
|
ManuelDmotivato:I am raising them in my backyard. |
Ade3131:She eventually sat on the eggs, everything was smooth for about 24 hours till Hen-1 started rejecting & pecking some of the Chicks, one was badly hurt, causing its dead. Immediately afterwards, I divided the Chicks between the 2 Hens and dispose the eggs. Ade3131:Turkey hens can be annoyingly unreasonable, a neighbor once had a turkey that breaks every egg she laid. But there are great ones too, some can hatch up to 90% of eggs laid out of the usual 10 - 17. Sorry your turkey died, the grown ones are less susceptible to common poultry diseases and usually don't die easily. I give mine ginger, garlic, bitter leaf & aloe vera to boost their immunity. |
ManuelDmotivato:They make noise when they are hungry. When they got separated from their mothers. When they got lost. Lets converse on this thread, if it is personal/sensitive message you can post an email I can reach you. |
Week 2 update Poults and moms are healthy & doing great.
|
kripen:I love local fowls, 1 hen gives dozens of chicks in a year. |
ManuelDmotivato:I feed them twice daily, 6am & 2pm. They eat starter feed (pellets or mash) The risk in raising turkey poults is the mothers are not great parents & the poults are very fragile in the first few weeks. If you have day old poults separated from the mother, you will need to raise them with all the extra care like you do with young broilers. If the mother is raising them keep them in a cage/coop for at least a month, what they eat is important, they grow so fast with quality unadulterated feed. |
ManuelDmotivato:Turkey mature at 6 months. Day olds go for 800 - 1500. Buyers will visit you at home & ask you to sell. |
Week 1 update (from first hatch) Hen-1 turned aggressive to some poults, I guess 12 is too many for her. She pecked one on the head & broke its skull. Hen-2 has some of the chicks now.
|
Hen-2 coop The atmosphere is not so jovial here. The idea is to get her sit on the eggs, she stands over them. She's uncomfortable, it is expected, but she will sit. If more chicks get hatched in the next 3 days, she will have some of her old chicks back.
|
Hen-1 coop Calm mum, cheerful babies.
|
I got 10 unhatched eggs, today is the final day of 28 days incubation period of turkey eggs. I am not throwing them, I had in the past experienced eggs that are abandoned, hatching themselves when the mother left them in the nest. I am hoping to get more poults. So, Hen-2 that hatches the most eggs is now given Hen-1 unhatched eggs, and Hen-1 takes Hen-2 babies. I broke one unhatched egg & I am right it is a dud. The integration for Hen-1 with 12 babies went smoothly. Hen-2 with 9 unhatched eggs is not having it, madam has been throwing tantrums since the past hour. |
Log from first egg to last hatch. First egg: 5th oct 2021 Hen-1 went broody: 23rd oct Hen-2 went broody: 24th oct The turkeys lay on same nest, I had to separate them. 2 birds brooding in 1 nest is a disaster waiting to happen, So. Hen-1 to Nest-1 with 10 eggs: 24th oct Hen-2 to Nest-2 with 11 eggs: 24th oct First hatch at Nest-1: 16th nov 6 babies at Nest-1: 17th nov 7 babies at Nest-1: 18th nov First hatch at Nest-2: 17th nov 4 babies at Nest-2: 18th nov 5 babies at Nest-2: 20th nov |
Hello, welcome - greetings. My two turkeys recently hatched, the growth update of the babies (poults) will be primarily shared on this thread. As at 20th November 2021 there has been 24 eggs laid, 12 hatched, 10 unhatched & 2 got eaten (i suspected the male turkey). The hungry/yawning one at the last pic hatches today.
