I Have No Confidence In This Court - Nnamdi Kanu

https://abacityblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2-1.jpg

There was drama at a Federal High Court in Abuja today, December 23, when Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra and a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) made an objection in court.

But instead of answering the clerk’s question, Kanu began by saying he has an objection to make. His counsel, Vincent Obetta, in his advice urged his client to wait for the case to be fully mentioned before any further objection.

After the clerk was done with calling of the case and the accused person, the judge, A. R. Mohammed, said: “It will be good to appreciate and take into consideration the objection raised by the defendant.”

At the judge’s permission, Nnamdi Kanu went further with his objection.

He said: “Thank you very much my lordship, but my objection is that I will not receive a fair trial before this court. The information I got is that I will not receive a fair trial before this court.

“I will not sacrifice the due process of law because of speedy court process over the principle of natural process on the altar of speedy release. In other words, I would rather remain in detention than subject myself to a trial that I know amounts to perversion of justice.

“Your lordship, previous court rulings have been given by courts of competent jurisdiction in this country, Nigeria which were not carried out by the DSS.”

The prosecuting counsel, Mohammed Diri, having heard the objections of the defendant said: “First, he objects trial by your lordship because he believes he is not going to get fair trail. Two, he said, the trial before your lordship will amount to perversion of justice.

“He said the rule of the law is clear and that the defendant may object to his trial at any time.

“Your lordship before the defendant can object to his trial, he has to file an application objecting his trial before this court.”

He said in that application the defendant is expected to exhibit special evidences why he should not be tried by a particular court.

Diri said that this will enable the court and the prosecutors to properly reply to the defendant.

“And this has not been done in this case,” he added.

Quoting section 396 sub section of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Diri said an objection trial may be raised by the defendant only after the plea of the defendant is taken, but not before.

Diri said: “My lordship, what the defendant just did is putting the cart before the horse.”

He further urged the court to overrule the objection of the first defendant and order that the charges filed by the prosecution before the court be read to the three defendants for the purpose of taking their plea.

In his reply, the defending counsel said the argument by Diri is only an effort to puncture his client’s objection, adding that he is in tandem with the objection made by Kanu.

“We believe that whatever comes out of this court should be justice for the three parties – the state, the court and the accused persons,” Obetta said.

But in his ruling, Mohammed said he sees nothing wrong in the defendant’s objection.

Defining Kanu as someone who is learned and understands the legalities of his objection, Mohammed said the first defendant is not objecting the validity of the charges against him but on the confidence he has in the court.

He added that there is nothing wrong with the defendant’s objection which he (the judge) said is in order.

Mohammed also said that he was standing down from the case as Kanu had the right to reject the trial, saying: “After all justice is rooted on confidence. If any of the parties has no confidence in the court, he has the right to say so.”

He noted that the prosecution would have done the same thing if they were in Kanu’s shoes.

Mohammed, therefore, said: “I therefore remit this case file to the chief judge of this court to take necessary action.”

PoliticsBuhari Is Spending Money Like A Drunken Sailor – Fani-kayode by ABACITYBLOG(op): 12:48pm On Dec 23, 2015
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s presentation of the 2016 budget of the over N6 trillion before a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode has accused the President of mortgaging the future of Nigerians stressing that the budget was insincere.

The former PDP Presidential Campaign spokesman, in a statement in Abuja yesterday, accused the Buhari administration of spending money like a drunken sailor.

Fani-Kayode stated that it was ironic that former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Tinubu; Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and Governor Nasir El- Rufai who were all against deregulation during former President Jonathan tenure are now in support of deregulation.

Noting that the Buhari’s government was mortgaging the future of Nigeria, Nigerians and their children, he said,
“The 2016 budget is fueled by insincerity, shrouded in fantasy, built on tall dreams and spawned by deceit, ignorance and the illusion of change. It is bloated, unrealistic, expensive, cosmetic and it will not result in anything good.

“In order to fund part of the budget the government intends to borrow money and this will throw our country into even greater debt. What a tragedy this is given the fact that in 2007 Nigeria was debt-free. The Buhari administration is spending money like a drunken sailor and they are borrowing as if there is no tomorrow, mortgaging the future of our nation and our children.

PoliticsI Didn’t Collect N2.8bn From Jonathan, Pay Me My Money – OPC Leader Tells Buhari by ABACITYBLOG(op): 12:33pm On Dec 23, 2015
Founder of the Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun yesterday requested the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to pay him and his organisation the money owed them for the protection of the nation’s oil pipelines.

Speaking at a quarterly interactive media roundtable in Lagos, the national chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, explained that six companies were given the contract by the Goodluck Jonathan administration to guard pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

According to him,

“We were given the contract on March 15, 2015 and we deployed youths into the jungle. They faced insects, snakes and other wild animals and some of them even died. The government did not pay us a kobo before or during the time of the contract which ended on June 15.

“We have asked our lawyers to study the terms of the contract. An official in the NNPC told me that we had been paid but I told him that we had not received a penny. We call the attention of the powers that be to look into this. The holy books say that a worker deserves his wage.”

Recounting that Lai Mohammed had alleged that Jonathan gave the OPC over N2bn as mobilisation money for the election under the guise of pipeline protection, Fasehun urged Mohammed, who is now the Minister of Information and Culture, to withdraw the statement and correct the wrong impression.

PoliticsI’m Ready To Renounce My Throne For Biafra Freedom”–eze Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu Father by ABACITYBLOG(op): 6:27am On Dec 01, 2015
So they said blood is thicker than water and Snake can’t bear what is not long, Activism they say, runs in the family of the traditional ruler of Afaraukwu in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. From the monarch himself, His Royal Majesty, Eze Sir I. O. Kanu, Eze Ikputu of Afara Ukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, to the least of his children, it’s all the same blue blood of activism permanently glued in their veins. In the early 1990s, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, spearheaded the agitation for the reduction of school fees. Now Nnamdi, is leading a group to demand the freedom of Biafra.

Daily Sun interviewed HRH Eze Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s father, he revealed that it was activism that made him represent his area three times as Councillor, said he was ready to abdicate his throne over the course for which his son is being detained; see the interview excerpt below:

How do you feel concerning your son appearing in court last week?

I’m very happy that he was brought to court on Monday (last week). From what I heard, as I was not able to go because of my health, I was impressed at least my family members were able to see him.

You may have had high hopes your son would be released last week, but he was not. How do you react to this failed expectation?

Well, it’s true that his release has taken time, but every Biafran in Abuja, I learnt, was protesting that he be released. Even those of them that were not on their Biafran uniform later changed to it, flying their flags and also chanting that he should be released. It made me sad that he was not released because I expected them to release him on that very day, but it didn’t come through, instead they adjourned the case.

Do you think it is just for him to continue to be in custody?

PoliticsAbia Tribunal: Abian's In New York Protest Over Tribunal Judgements by ABACITYBLOG(op): 9:56am On Oct 19, 2015
As the Tribunal has been busy dishing out their judgements both Senatorial, House Of Representatives and others, Many Abians are not happy towards the Tribunal Judgements so far, recently in Umuahia Youths formed a gathering protest over the same judgement, as if that one is not enough, On Saturday, 17th October 2015, Abians in New York City, USA, planned protest at the Nigerian Embassy New York, United State.

Based on the information gathered from the report of the event organizer ‪#‎Nnanna‬ Ijomah, they submitted a protest letter to the media and to the officials of the Nigerian Embassy NY.

READ THE FULL REPORT :

Saturday, Oct 17, 2015 a sizeable crowd of Abia residents in diaspora gathered before the Nigerian Embassy in downtown Manhattan despite the relatively short notice of the event to protest the recent tribunal rulings in Abia state. New york City being a city of immigrants , it was not surprising to see a motley crowd of regular New Yorkers who ordinarily cannot tell where Nigeria is, let alone Abia state willingly join in our protest in solidarity with our cause after they were informed of what we were protesting about.

All in all the protest was a success inasmuch as it signals to our folks back home that we in diaspora are in comradeship with their efforts in bringing about change in Abia state and the return of Dr Alex Otti's mandate and that their action so far has been an intersection between hope, courage and resilience, knowing full well the extent the present Abia government will go in stifling their efforts through the use of a corrupt police force.

One of the reasons, he stated, was that the population of the former Eastern state, now South East and part of South South that make up Biafra land can currently boast of over 10 million people, adding that the Biafran people naturally do not share similar culture and tradition with Hausa-Fulani of the North and Yoruba of the South West as to continue to remain together under one country called Nigeria.

Another reason was that MASSOB, as a separatist group, had all it takes to run a sovereign state of Biafra, having had enough instruments, structures, flag, currency, coat of arms and defence to assume a status of an existing government.

As the dissension over the closure of the children’s wing of the Villa Chapel located inside Nigeria’s presidential quarters rages on some fresh facts has been uncovered.

On Sunday Dailypost had a chat with Mr. Kallamu Musa Dikwa, Borno-based Pastor and the Executive Director, Voice of Northern Christian Movement, about what is currently going on inside the Aso villa.

It could also be recalled that when the news about the closure of the Aso villa church broke out earlier in the month, presidential adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina denied the development by tweeting photos from service held on Sunday, September 6, 2015.

A tweet via his handle, @FemAdesina said: “President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) orders Aso Villa Chapel shut? There is no such thing. It’s only a rumour spawned by fecund imagination gone into overdrive. PMB respects freedom of worship.”

Speaking about the development, Musa Dikwa challenged the presidency to also release most recent photos of the children’s church.

“Let them not deceive Nigerians. I can confirm to you that that section of the church has been converted to a storage room by Mrs. Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I don’t want to think that the President authorized her action, Nevertheless, he should have done something by now because it is a serious matter.”

Deputy Director of Information for Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB) in Onitsha, Anambra State, Mazi Chris Mocha, have said that the clampdown on its members by security agents would not stop the movement until the Biafra state is actualised.

Speaking with the journalists in Onitsha, he said:

“Buhari cannot stop us from actualisation of a sovereign state of Biafra even if he sends the entire security operatives in the country to the South East and South South geo-political zones. Infact, it is an act of cowardice to do that, because we are a non-violent organisation fighting to actualise a Biafra Republic.”

” if OBJ as president, who hated Ndigbo and what we stood for could not stop MASSOB for eight years, is it Buhari that will stop us.”
