Following the N1.4 trillion ($5.2 billion) fine slammed MTN Nigeria by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over delayed disconnection of unregistered mobile phone numbers, MTN Group in South Africa, Monday, announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sifiso Dabengwa, from office.
His exit was announced Monday morning to shareholders at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
The statement read: “MTN wishes to inform the market that MTN’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sifiso Dabengwa, has resigned. Due to the most unfortunate prevailing circumstances occurring at MTN Nigeria, I, in the interest of the company and its shareholders, have tendered my resignation with immediate effect,” stated Dabengwa.
Nhleko, the current non-executive Chairman has agreed to act as Executive Chairman for a maximum period of six months while the company identifies a successor for Dabengwa.
Nhleko who had served as Non-executive Director and Chairman of MTN from July 2001 until June 2002 and thereafter as an Executive Director, Group President and CEO to March 2011, had also chaired the group in a non-executive capacity for the past two and half years.
He said, “I will assume responsibility as Executive Chairman for the next six months as I proactively deal with the Nigerian regulator and will continue to work with them in addressing the issues around unregistered subscribers as a matter of urgency.”
To ensure compliance with King III, Mr. Alan van Biljon will continue to serve as the Lead Independent Director on the MTN board of directors (MTN Board) while Nhleko takes over executive responsibility.
“Together with the MTN Board, my second priority will be to find an appropriate Chief Executive Officer to take MTN forward. I will then revert to my Non-executive Chairman role,” Nhleko said.
Meanwhile, stakeholders were also assured that MTN will continue to inform them of any material engagements with the Nigerian authorities through the Stock Exchange News Service of the JSE Limited (SENS). They were however advised to continue to exercise caution when dealing in the company’s securities until a further announcement is made.

You can’t slash salaries of magistrates, Imo NBA tells Okorocha
The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Imo State yesterday declared that Governor Rochas Okorocha has no constitutional power to slash wages of magistrates in the state.
The NBA also stated that magistrates were not under the executive arm of government and that it was erroneous to regard them as staff of the ministries under the executive arm.
A statement signed by Stanley Imo, Christian Ikwuoma, Max Nwokenta and Chris Ugwuorji branch chairmen of Owerri, Orlu, Okigwe and Mbaise, respectively stated: “The Bar in Imo state, hereby, condemns in strong terms and also rejects any purported new salary structure unilaterally formulated by the Imo State Government for Imo State magistrates.

AGONY AND FRUSTRATION OF AN ENTREPRENEUR FRIEND OF MINE!

This is to update you that payment to you has not gone through yet. They informed me this morning that all of our bank accounts are frozen despite the fact that I have done the biometric verification and linked the BVN to all corporate and personal accounts. This is the case in both XXXX and XXXX banks. It is however being resolved and they will effect the transfer as soon as it is resolved. They said it was an error in the system and will be resolved today.
I have a USD Domiciliary Account in XXXX bank and they have also declined by request to transfer funds from my own personal account in Nigeria to my own personal account in the USA. They have also declined my request to transfer funds from my own XXXX Company Euro Account in Nigeria to my own XXXX Company Account in Dublin. I have been told that this is Central Bank Policy and I need to come in person to withdraw the money in cash. These are small transactions of $4,000. and €6,000 to pay freelance developers that are working with me on a hospitality software project.
In my opinion, this is Federal Government's efforts to frustrate the efforts of Nigerian Entrepreneurs whom the Federal Government should be funding and encouraging to increase employment, grow innovation and help grow the economy. This is all in the name of fighting corruption when we know all the people who have stolen our money and who are still stealing it today. Most of them are moving about freely and they all have mechanisms for moving their funds wherever they want. Now, the ordinary middle-class entrepreneur is being frustrated by policies put together by a bunch of insane people.

Despite the forced retirement of five Deputy Comptrol­lers General, three Assistant Comptrollers General and 26 Comptrollers were in one sweeping move kicked out yesterday.

There are indications that the Comp­troller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali may not be done with his re-organization of the para­military establishment in line with his three-point mandate to reform, restruc­ture and increase revenue.

Aside the impending “tsunami”, it was learnt that the Customs boss plans to ad­dress the perennial issue of stagnation by dismantling the godfather structures which placed some “anointed” officers on ranks far higher than their unfavoured counterparts. That aspect of the reform may see some officers demoted and oth­ers elevated.

According to the Spokesman of Customs, Wale Adeniyi, the five Dep­uty Comptrollers-General of Customs (DCGs) who had earlier given notifi­cation to the Comptroller-General for voluntary disengagement, are John Atte, Ibrahim Mera, Musa Tahir, Austin Nwosu and Akinade Adewuyi.

“Three others of the rank of Assistant Comptroller-General are also affected in the re-organisation. They are Madu Mohammed, Secretary to the Nige­ria Customs Board, Victor Gbemudu, Zonal Coordinator Zone ‘A’ and Bello Liman, Assistant Comptroller-General, headquarters. The rest are of the rank of Comptrollers serving in Customs head­quarters, zonal offices and various area commands. The Comptroller-General of Customs stated that the retirements were part of measures to kick-start the reposi­tioning of the service for improved per­formance”, Adeniyi said.

Though their disengagement was termed voluntary, Saturday Sun learnt they were actually axed but given the room to resign as soft landing.

The development, it was learnt, has sent jitters down the spines of the “sur­viving” senior Customs officers, who suspect the Comptroller General may soon release another sack list that will consume them.

For many, the ongoing sack was antici­pated as the Customs boss, Hammed Ali had at different fora, hinted of plans to weed out those he described as bad eggs within the system.

He said corrupt officers had strangulat­ed the service, thus reducing the amount of revenue generated into the govern­ment’s coffers.

The coming of Ali

When Hammed Ali, a retired military Colonel was appointed the Customs Comptroller General following the re­tirement of his predecessor, Abdul­lahi Dikko Inde, he was literally told to cleanse the Customs, which is undoubt­edly a major revenue generating artery of the government but believed to also be a cesspit of corruption.

Before Ali was named as the new CGC, all the DCGs and some ACGs were reportedly romancing many influ­ential politicians to be made the Cus­toms boss following Abdullahi Dikko’s retirement.

Top government sources who con­fided in Saturday Sun said the lobbying soon turned into rivalry as some of the power-hungry Customs officers began attacking each other.

“The in-fighting was too fierce. All of them wanted power and I’m sure the President must have shocked them by announcing an outsider. But most of them were already billionaires follow­ing intelligence reports on them. That was not a soothing news to Buhari and he brought in Ali as a shocker. He will surely sweep away some bad eggs once he fully settles down”, a source had pre­dicted.

Unending corruption

Findings by Saturday Sun showed that Ali, a greenhorn in Customs quick­ly settled down to understand how the Service operates. He identified corrup­tion as the major blight the growth of the service. He also discovered that cor­ruption had become so institutionalised that there was no way any importer or businessman can transact any legitimate business without bribing Customs of­ficers.

Ali was also fully briefed about the connivance of Customs officers and agents to shortchange the government by under-paying container and vehicle tariffs just to enrich a few persons in the system.

He also learnt of “flying containers”, a slang that means containers exit the ports without documentation. All par­ties involved share the proceeds and the government gets nothing. The former Customs CG, Abdullahi Dikko once described Tin Can Island Command of the service as the most corrupt Customs formation.

At a recent meeting with manufactur­ers in Lagos, the new Customs boss was shocked when he learnt about 70 signa­tures are required before any of them can get their raw materials out of the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

“About 70 people will have to inspect the goods and append their signatures to the documents releasing the goods, while about 40 signatures are required for the same process at the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa”, they said.

All these, it was learnt formed part of the reasons for the mass sack.

Another challenge that propelled Ali to disengage so many officers is to ad­dress the issue of stagnation and “fa­voured” postings.

“I’ve realised that there are anomalies in the promotion and posting of Cus­toms officers. We have complaints on it. We have cases where people were promoted based on godfatherism and so we’ll review them. We also have cases of those who have been stagnated in a particular position for a very long time for no just cause and we also want to ad­dress that. We also have those who have been glued to a place where they make money via bribes and other underhand deals. We’ll also look into it. A commit­tee is looking into these issues. It is al­ready working out modalities to address these anomalies. Soon, you’ll hear what we are doing about them”, Ali said at a recent press conference.

Painful surgery

Importers, freight forwarders and oth­er members of the import community have described the ongoing reform as a painful surgery that must be performed for the Customs and indeed the nation’s economy to reposition for greater effi­ciency.

They accused the Abdullahi Dikko administration of running the Customs as a mafia ring where “his boys” en­joyed juicy posting and rapid promotion and others left dejected.

There was panic in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital over al­leged relocation of Boko Haram prisoners from Ekwulobia, Anambra State to Abakaliki prisons.

Ebonyi residents woke up with great fears when news of al­leged relocation of the 47 Boko Haram suspects filtered into town. Though Governor Dave Umahi swiftly dispelled the ru­mour, Abakaliki residents were already spoiling for protest.

According to the Governor; “I received a text message shortly after I returned to Abakaliki from my trip to Israel that Boko Haram suspects previously re­located to Ekwulobia Prison in Anambra State have been relo­cated to Abakaliki Prison.

“Immediately I got the text massage, I made some calls and I can tell you authoritatively that Boko Haram suspects were not relocated to Abakaliki and there are no plans for such relocation. Ebonyi State is not yet ripe to ac­commodate such high caliber of prison inmates”.

It was further gathered that the alleged relocation of the Boko Haram suspects from Ekwulo­bia Prisons in Anambra state to an undisclosed destination in the country may have triggered the suspicion that the dreaded sect members may have been trans­fered to Abakaliki prison.

Recall that there were about 134 inmates at the Ekwulobia prison before the 47 Boko Ha­ram prisoners were brought in the night of Sunday, June 28, 2015 amidst tight security.

A reliable source revealed that the suspects had arrived the Abakaliki prisons last night in four trucks heavily guarded by security operatives mainly sol­diers.

However, at an event during the last presidential elections, the self-styled Comedy Berlusconi took the then presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbanjo to the cleaners. But now that things have turned around for the duo, the comedian seems apologetic. In this exclusive interview, Gordons sheds more light on why he did the joke. Excerpts:
Tell us about yourself?
I am the first born of many children. My mom and dad separated before I was three months old. My mom is married to someone else, so I am the only person they had together, every other person is just half brother or sister. My mom is from Aladja while my dad is from Oforegbala, two different local governments, but we are all Urhobos.
How was your growing up?
I grew up with my grand mother because my mom and dad separated. I didn’t see my mom till when I was like 15-years-old. That was when I got to know my mother. Growing up was rough because, as the only child, my mom left me for my grandmother to take care of. I grew up learning everything by myself, there was nobody to teach me that this is the way of life or this is the way that a child should go. I learnt everything all by myself, and through God.
How did comedy start for you?
You must understand that there are two types of comedians. There are those who learnt the art of comedy and those that have the natural gift of comedy. By the grace of God, I have the gift of comedy. I have been doing comedy even when it wasn’t a profession, because it was something inside of me. I started entertaining my parents and guests at a very tender age, and even while at Nana College. I was in Literary, Debating & Dramatic Society. I was already doing comedy everywhere including Delta State University where I read Integrated Science.

Cross River State Police Command has arrested one Madam Maria Ekanem, 27, for allegedly selling her two weeks old baby for twenty thousand Naira.
Others also arrested in connection with the alleged sale of the baby include Mrs Eno Enang, Reuben Eno and Dr Okokon Offiong.
Briefing newsmen on its activities, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP John Eluu, said the police succeeded in tracking down the culprits following a tip-off.
Eluu said on getting wind of the matter, a team of detectives from the Federal Housing Police Station in Calabar, swung into action and finally nabbed the suspects.
He said: “We got a tip-off on the crime a week ago and immediately swung into action which led to the arrest of the five suspects.
“Four members of the syndicate had negotiated the sale of the baby for N20,000 with Ms. Maria Ekanem, mother of the child.”
The PRO said investigation was still in progress and when completed the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.
In her reaction, the mother of the child denied selling her baby for N20,000, insisting that she only used her two weeks old baby as collateral to get money for food
Narrating her story, Maria said: “When I was pregnant I almost aborted the child but I summoned courage and delivered the baby but after giving birth there was no money and I approached one Dr. Okokon for financial help to buy food and feed the family.
“Later Dr Okokon directed me to hand over the baby to Matron Eno, who runs a private clinic and it was while doing the exchange that the Police came and arrested us, I am innocent,” she said

HONG KONG — Speaking at a town-hall-style meeting in India on Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg sought to explain, and at times defend, Facebook’s plans to expand access to the Internet by offering a stripped-down free version.

During a roughly hourlong question-and-answer session at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, Mr. Zuckerberg said Internet.org — which offers a purposely stripped down version of the Internet to minimize data use — had one million members in India and had brought online 15 million people around the world who would otherwise not have Internet access.

Despite the promising, if difficult to verify, statistics, the program has not gone without complaints in India, the world’s largest democracy. Critics argue that by controlling which companies and individuals can offer services on Internet.org, Facebook is creating a walled-off kingdom in which it decides the beneficiaries of its initiative.

Mr. Zuckerberg emphasized that Internet.org was “an open platform that any developer can build something for, regardless of who they are, as long as they follow the basic rules of what Internet.org is.”

Growing up, we had dogs as guards or say pets. As an only child, I got what I wanted. On this fateful day, specifically January 12th, I asked my father for one of the dogs to live in my room. He granted my wish as a birthday present to me. This was where my ordeal started.
I would bath with the dog, eat with it and all. On this particular day, I played with the dog and I got tickled and turned on. In the process, one thing led to another and I had an ‘insertion’ with the dog.
For 15 years, I have slept with over 10 dogs. I have lived my life sleeping with any cute dog I came across. All I need do is either buy it or cajole it to a corner and have sex. I am a full grown adult and I still can’t kill the urge. Whatever you can imagine doing with a man in bed as a lady, I do with my dogs.
