Since I came across nairaland,I can vividly say that I have learnt a lot of things; (both relevant and irrelevant) here on nairaland. But the main reason for this write up is about the person behind the moniker 'explorer.
Explorer is one member I always love to follow his topics maybe for the following reasons;
1. They are highly educative
2. It presents pictorial evidence as back up
And lastly is always likely to hit the front page.however, that is just a plus and which also proves how educative and relevant his topics are.
His threads pulls crowd, and it is one I always enjoy viewing and with the comments I have read on his threads, one can see that he as been appraised and rated high.
I just want to use this opportunity to appeal to you and the forum's management to consider his topics or threads created on sections such as the politics,sports and romance sections,something like 'explorers section' . This might be difficult for you to do,but I know its possible. His passion for creating interesting and educative threads for the enlightment of both registered and unregistered members deserves an accolade,thank you for an anticipated consideration.

FATWA ON MMM BUSINESS SCHEME

Assalaamu alaikum!

Before concluding on whether this type of business is haram or not it is pertinent to understand how the scheme works:

First, one deposits some amount of money *into* the system( the "company" claims otherwise though.)

From the moment he starts contributing(depositing), he starts earning points called "Mavros".

This amount increases by 30% every month.

All these contributions are done in the name of "help"/ "assistance".

Request can be made to withdraw money(based on points earned) at the end of the month or even before the month ends.

Bonuses are given after registration as well as when one invites a new member.

All the money being paid to members are from the deposits of other members. There are no other sources.

This business model is a typical example of what is referred to as a *Ponzi scheme*. In this system what happens is that the operator/ company pays returns to its investors from new capital paid by new investors and not from any profits. No products are involved - only a pooling of funds by depositors into the scheme.

This is haram for the following reasons:

1) It involves depositing some amount of money and getting returns on it later on without actually doing anything with ( investing) that money deposited. This is riba( usury).

2) The business model is very risky because it is by nature unsustainable. The reason is that a continuous stream of new investment( from existing and/or new investors) is needed to fund the higher returns promised . If such in flow of money slows, then it would become difficult or impossible for the company to pay the promised return. Apart from this, once an economy starts to decline investors tend to withdraw part or all of their money leading to the same problem. Eventually this system would collapse sooner or later and people would automatically lose all money deposited. In fact this has actually happened with this very company in other countries where it initially operated such as Russia, and people lost huge amounts of money with total sum amounting to billions of dollars. Some investors actually committed suicide. The owner of this company Sergei Mavrov had been initially arrested and convicted of Fraud.

This "company" was open to the Nigerian audience via its website this year( 2016).

The advise is to please stay away from such business. It is not compatible with the shari'ah and it is in itself very dangerous.

There are other business models that have come up in recent times that are also largely fraudulent and hence haram. An example is "network marketing" also known as multilevel marketing ( MLM)/ Pyramid marketing where someone registers with a company by paying some fee and he is then given license to purchase the company's products at wholesale price and sell. He also invites new members. He makes money via his sales but most of the emphasis and profit ( or returns) is from the number of people he invites into the business (i.e the size of his network). And usually, he is also required to sell products to his prospective members rather than emphasis on consumers outside the plan/ network who may actually want to use those products. In addition they tend to have cult- like techniques where they gather in circles to give emotional support to themselves after every business meeting.
This scheme is also fraudulent in most of its ramifications and actually illegal in many countries and has been declared haram by many scholars. Despite all of that many of such companies exist in Nigeria today.
