Nairaland GeneralRealistic Self Love Habits Everyone Must Practice In 2021 by abayomitheblog(op): 2:40pm On Jan 03, 2021
I got an email from a friend on Christmas day that made me write this. In it, he gave me a really important advice that I appreciate, you’ve got to ‘love myself’ more.

After reading the email, I thought to myself how can I love myself?

This is a question I’ve tried to answer several times by myself and you may have thought about it too considering how often we hear and use the word self love.

Anyways, I went on YouTube and found some videos that talked about self love practices.

Below, I am going to share what I learnt from these videos so that you can practice the self love habits in 2021 and beyond.

1. Practice gratitude

Self-love begins with being able to recognize your blessings no matter how little (there’s no such thing as little blessing anyways) and be grateful for it. You can’t be happy if you keep focusing on your lacks. I don’t have this, I don’t have that.

How about what you have? Be grateful for them and you will start realizing how blessed you are.

2. Stop self criticism

When I heard this, I knew I need it. I’m a perfectionist and if things are not done the way they should be, I criticise. You can be your own biggest cheerleader and also be your own biggest negative critic. But the former will do you more harm. Give yourself some slack, you’ve never done life before so don’t be too hard on yourself.

You are doing perfectly fine. Anyways, there is no such thing as perfection. It’s a mirage and stop trying to attain.

3. Self affirmation

Self criticism should be replaced with self affirmation. You are human and you are only trying to be one so be nice to yourself. Self affirmation encourages you to think positively about the important things in your life.

4. Take care of your body

Like Jim Rohn said, take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live. A healthy body births a strong and productive mind. Make sure you take good care of you body.

Exercise regularly (even if it’s an evening walk)
Watch what you eat
Take your bath
Take care of your physical appearance

5. Do more of things that you love

Doing what you love is definitely a self love habit you should practice. If you haven’t, start paying attention to your emotions and actions when you are doing something. Does it give you joy? Do you want lose track of time or do you glance at the clock every minute?

Your emotions and actions can tell you if you like doing such activity. Thou shall not spend thy time (or too much time) on things that do not make thy happy. That’s the number one commandment of self love. You should respect your happiness by doing things that you love and makes you happy.

6. Positive self talk

When do you say to yourself when you’re alone? or what do say when you start having those meetings in your head?

Our subconscious mind acts in such a way that it does not filter negative from positive so when you say negative about yourself to yourself, your subconscious believe it. And that means your conscious mind will find it difficult not to believe it. Slowly, it starts to believe it and you start acting that negative (sometimes even without you realizing)

7. Create personal boundaries

Setting personal boundaries is you respecting and showing yourself love. I use to be a people pleaser, I hate it when someone asks me for help and I say no in fact I found it difficult to say no. I wanted to help everyone that asked (even those who didn’t but look like they needed it), I had no respect for my health or time.

But you know what this kind of thing do to you? It wear you down, you feel drained mentally and physically. You cannot help everyone that comes your way and you should make peace with that.

Also make peace with the fact that people will think you are wicked and heartless just because you said no to them.

Set personal boundaries in 2021, what are the things you’d accept? and those you would never accept maybe because it does not serve you. Respect those boundaries.

Nairaland General10 Important Tips For Writing A Blog Post That Actually Ranks On Google by abayomitheblog(op): 3:39pm On Nov 24, 2020
You can drastically increase your blog traffic just by writing a search engine optimized blog post. This means your blog post ranks on search engines like Google. Although ranking on Google takes time but writing a blog post worthy of ranking can reduce the time it takes to get traffic from Google.

Ranking on search engine takes time and it requires patience. So if you are a new blogger, you might not get on Google in your first year of blogging and that is fine

However, your blog posts or articles can rank high on Google faster when you follow these tips for writing a blog post that is search engine optimized.

So, let’s get into it

#1. Research topic before writing
Hey, it is time to let go that “expert/know it all” hat. Doing research is very important because you want your blog post to be full of value. You want to include everything your audience need to know.

This will not only present you as an expert to your readers but also present your blog as a credible one to search engines.

When I am making research, I ask myself

Is this a topic my readers would want to read?
Are there other people searching for this topic and what are they searching for?
What are the top guys in my industry saying or have said about this topic?
These questions will help you create blog posts that Google considers worthy.

#2. Do keyword research

Research topic is not enough, you need to research keywords when writing a search engine optimized blog post.

Keyword research will tell you,

What your audience are searching for on Google and other search engines
How many people are searching (search volume)
You will do keyword research better if you understand your audience, their fears and struggles, their pain and pleasure.

There are different tools that makes keyword research very easy but I use Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest.

All you need to do is input a keyword and Ubersuggest shows you the search volume, how difficult/easy it is to rank for that keyword and suggestions for keywords.

It also show websites that rank for that particular keyword so that you can pick from them.

The higher the search volume, the more difficult it will be for your blog post to rank high on search engines.

And this bring me to my next tip.

#3. Go for long-tail keywords
Long-tail keywords are keywords with more than one or two words. They are generic keywords and that is why you need to avoid them.

You want to go for specific keywords which are also called long-tail keywords.

Did I confuse you?

Can you guess the number of people who go on Google to search for words like game, music, movies, blog, etc. If I were you, I won’t guess because it is too vague. Too many people search for it.

These are keywords you want to avoid instead focus on specific keywords, long-tail keywords like what game to buy, best action games, best blues music, must watch action movies, starting a blog.

I hope you get the gist now? Okay, see number 4.

#4. Input keywords in your post, don’t over do
Now that you have your keywords, it is time to start writing. The long-tail keywords are to be added to your blog post.

Some important places to add your keywords,

Headlines
Introduction
Body of your post
Meta description
It is important to not also over do your keywords. Don’t keep pasting them all over your blog posts.

#5. Use the structure of a blog post
Don’t be surprised. Yes, there’s a structure for writing blog posts although it is a flexible one.

Many high ranking posts on Google follow this structure. In fact, every post on Google’s first page follows this structure.

And since the goal is to get you to that first page, you have to follow it too.

Here’s the structure of a blog post.

Headline
Introduction
Lead in
Main point
Conclusion
Call to action

Eight reasons you should ask for help

1. It shows vulnerability.

If you are one of the people that think vulnerability is a bad thing or it is for the weak then you begin to have rethink. Vulnerability is one of the most misunderstood concept. The society we live in today makes it difficult for us to be vulnerable. Mark Mason, author of the subtle art of not giving a f*ck wrote in a post that vulnerability is consciously choosing to not hide your emotions or desires from others.

Consciously, which means that we have been wired by our environment to hide our feelings or emotions hence we have make conscious decisions to show it. Being vulnerable does not only show that you are human, it shows that you are strong and care less about what others think. To show vulnerability is a tough thing to do especially in our world where showing weakness is seen as weak. People want you to be always strong which is impossible. I mean, you are human and you have your weakness. When you begin to ignore people’s opinion as you express your emotions, feelings and thoughts, then you are showing vulnerability.

2. You can never do it alone

Whether you want to hear this or not, you cannot do it alone, you cannot succeed alone, you cannot do it all by yourself. Trust me, you will get frustrated and worn out quickly if you think that you can. When you understand that there is no one that can do it alone and everyone needs help at one point or another, then you will find it easier.

3. You won’t get far without it

If you go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Think of any success story you have heard, I am sure there is no one that took all the credits. You can never go far without help, without someone else giving you something. Together, you go farther and maybe even faster.

4. You make them feel good

I don’t know about you but whenever someone comes to me for help, I feel worthy and when I do what they asked, I feel proud of myself and at peace with myself. Helping someone gives us joy and it is one of the inexpensive and effective ways to boost self esteem. Always keep in mind that you are not only doing yourself a favor by asking, you are also making the person helping you feel good about themselves.

5. It strengthens relationship

This applies mostly when you ask someone familiar to you. Although in some cases it works with strangers as well. When you ask for help, you stand a chance becoming a friend or becoming closer to the person. Psychologist and author Heidi Grant wrote in an article that asking helps to strengthen relationships.

6. You will feel a lot better

You are aware that needing help means that there is something that you cannot handle. Which means that it is possible for you to feel worried and disturbed as long as that thing stay unattended to. When you ask, you stand a very high chance of feeling much better. Your mental health is safe and you are able to think about other things.

7. You will not be rejected

The most common reason we prefer to hold back and resist asking for help is that we fear rejection. At least I know I do and I am making efforts to stop that. The fact is that you stand a high chance of not being rejected because people are willing since helping makes them feel good.

Having said that, it is also possible for you to be rejected, you should keep in mind that rejection is normal. You don’t need to worry about getting rejected, just try and see.

8 Asking for help will make people like you more

You can make others like you by asking for help from them. It makes others see you as someone willing to learn from them, as someone who does not know it all. Nobody wants to be friends with a know it all after all.

Read three tips from psychologist Heidi Grant on what to do when you ask for help.

Nairaland GeneralAre You An Introvert? Here's How To Become A Better Introvert by abayomitheblog(op): 1:56pm On Apr 02, 2020
While being an introvert is okay, it can be a bad thing because fortune they say favors the bold. So since we might be unable to become an extrovert, we can learn and become a better introvert.

I grew up scared of social gatherings maybe because I was scared of being judged and stigmatized. Most of us have the same reason, we would rather stay quiet than speak up or stay indoors than go out because we do not want to be judged.

I became an introvert and anything that would bring the spotlight on me, I avoided it. I know you might be like and that is why you are reading this post. Social anxiety can make you nervous when you want to meet someone especially someone new. I learnt over the years that people are your most prized possession. People are your ladder to success whether you like it or not.

Life is not all about you, it is about others and how you can impact others. No one can be successful alone, you need people around you. You need someone to tell your goals, your pain, your victory and even your failure. That is why you and I cannot do without each other. Over the past few weeks, I have made relationship with others top priority (well, I mean before the covid 19 crisis) and each day, I am working gradually to meet this goal.

Here are some ways you can use to become a better introvert.

1. Accept your social awkwardness.
I’ve learnt that whenever you feel like changing anything, the first step is to acknowledge that thing. It is difficult to accept most especially when the problem is fall on the negative trend of life. Accept the problem and then you can find solution. I am accepting that I suck when it comes to meeting new people, keeping conversations going, dancing at parties and so on. You should do the same.

2. Read books to improve yourself
I believe so much in reading books especially self-help books. Although these books won’t help you take action, it is impossible for the writer to help you take action but the writer or the book can inspire you to take action. You can read books on making friends, how to talk to strangers or how become more social or anything. Something to just help you.

I have two books on my reading list

Dale Carnegie’s how to influence people and How to talk to anyone; 92 little tricks for big success in relationships by Leil Lowndes

I recommend you read these books but like I said, they won’t help you take actions so continue reading for how I am taking actions.

3. Look out for where to belong
Many a times we get that social awkwardness because we feel that we do not belong here, and no one is worth relating with. That is the normal as we cannot belong everywhere. I have observed this happen to me a lot of times so I consciously pick gatherings I attend, groups I join and so on because the only time you can really connect with someone is when you and that person have something in common.

4. Intentionally introduce myself to strangers
This is the most difficult action for me but I am pushing it (a day at a time). When you do this too, you will realize the people are actually nicer than they look. I should also say that, it is not any stranger but strangers I feel like would be friend worthy after all your best friend was once a stranger.

5. Remind myself that this is a life of journey not destination
I think we all need this reminder that becoming socially active is a life journey and not a destination so there is no need to put pressure in yourself. There is no need to get mad at yourself when you fail one day, just try again the next day and the next and the next. This reminder will definitely help you stay calm while you smash your social goals whether that is whether it is getting to know people every day or going to gatherings daily.

Nairaland GeneralStop Focusing On Your Chronic Illness, Focus On These Instead by abayomitheblog(op): 2:01pm On Mar 16, 2020
One of the biggest challenges of living with a chronic illness is that it quickly make us feel less human. We focus on getting better and put so much effort into finding a cure which isn't bad but then we forget that we are human and just like every other human, we have emotions, thoughts, interests. We have the wish to belong but we tend to put all that away because of our illness.

There was a time when all I saw was my ‘sickled’ cell but it was in terms of delayed growth and skinny body frame. After few years it changed maybe I could give credit to some of the books I read. Just like me, you too can stop focusing on sickle cell. Let me first say that it is normal to feel I did especially as a young person because it is part of life with a chronic illness.

Here’s what to focus on instead.

1. Mindset
Your mindset is really important. It helps you see the little opportunity in the greatest of hardships. Some wise men have divided mindset into two; fixed mindset and growth mindset.

Someone with a fixed mindset prefers to think that he cannot have or become something because of his health, lack of talent or skill. Hence, they do not see themselves as someone that can make a change.

Meanwhile, people with growth mindset do not let any of that affect them. They think, how can I have this rather than I cannot have it. They find ways to learn skills and appreciate the process of growing even though they do not have the ‘skill’.

And remember that there is no one way to getting somewhere in life, you can also creating your own path as long as it leads you to your destination (goal).

2. Values
Our values are reflected in our day to day actions. Sometimes we think we value something but in truth we actually do not because what we value, we give more importance.

You need to start focusing on what you value. The things you would rather do with your time. Still on value but from another angle, let’s ask ourselves, how valuable are you? What values do you have to offer others?

Just so you know, money is no longer the reward for hard work, it is now the reward for value. The more value you offer, the more money you earn. If you don’t think you have enough value to offer, don’t feel bad. It’s never too late to use your growth mindset; find a valuable skill to learn and don’t stop learning and growing.

3. Growth
This is the most important. You are in competition with no one but you, who you were yesterday. There is no need to compare yourself instead focus on growing, focus on becoming a better person and becoming the best at whatever you do.

Always seek ways to grow, unlearn old things and learn new things.

HealthHabits You Must Develop If You Live With A Chronic Illness by abayomitheblog(op): 2:16pm On Jan 30, 2020
To improve your health and life is not a matter of big gestures. It is more of putting in everyday actions that turn into habits.

Habits become a lifestyle and automatically improve your life. Sometimes, chronic illnesses can make you feel down and unmotivated. This year, I am making an intentional approach not only towards healing but also towards staying motivated and smashing my goals.

If you are ready to make such approach too, I have made this put to help you with habits to develop. These habits will help you improve your life in almost all areas.

It is Maxwell Maltz who said, it takes 21 days to develop a habit. You have to be more patient with yourself when you want to develop a habit.

1. Water is your friend
You’re probably tired of hearing drink more water by now but I am not tired of saying it. You might think you are taking enough water but in reality you are not. In reality, you are too focused on work or too lazy to go get water or too in pain to think about water.

I urge you to embrace water and remind yourself to drink plenty of it. See water as a friend, a friend that you cannot get enough of.

If you find drinking water difficult, I wrote other ways that you can do to stay hydrated in the link below.
https://yomisblog.com/finding-drinking-water-difficult-try-eating-your-water/

2. Positive mindset pays more
Having a positive mindset towards life is important when you live with sickle cell that is full of negativity in the society.

To have a positive mindset might mean

Believing that your illness is not a death sentence
You know that your dreams can only be delayed and not stopped
Having hope even in the greatest despair, pain or complication
Affirming positively to yourself every morning

When you begin to keep a positive mindset, you will start to see more opportunities rather than challenges.

3. Nutrition is important
We are what we eat, right? It is important to build an habit of eating healthy. You can start with a healthy breakfast a day and gradually turn it into a lifestyle.

Aim for greens and plenty of fruits.

4. Saying NO is a life saver
Save your life by learning how to say NO and say it with confidence. Don’t try to say NO when you are still feeling guilty. I like to say that Life has only two choice YES or NO, there is no maybe or I’m not sure.

Be confident with NO. Some things you need to start saying NO to

Things that remind you of a hurtful past memory
People that make you feel inferior
People that does not add you live
Things you like doing but you puts you in pain
Things that does not add value to your growth

5. Put yourself first
Nobody deserves that care or love than you. Develop the habit of putting yourself first and give that self love to you.

6. Gratitude always
Gratitude helps you remember the what you have and that way, you remain at peace. You can get a gratitude jar and write a thing every day that you are grateful.

It is a very good habit to develop.

7. Stop Blaming/Questioning yourself
It is not your fault that you have this illness so why blame yourself? You wouldn’t choose it if given the chance to choose. Why blame yourself?

Stop the habit of blaming yourself especially for things that are out of your control. It shifts your mindset from focusing on the challenge to seeking solution.

8. Get yourself a quiet time
If you haven’t been doing this, it is important you seek out time even if it is two hours a week to sit alone quietly. Try not think about anything but you will probably think about something so just let it come and go.

If you wish you might turn it into meditation or you might just sit and stare at nature. This habit actually helps you reconnect to your soul.

9. Smile won’t kill
Learn to smile more. In fact, research has shown that faking a smile is as effective in exercising your facial muscles and sending happy notes to your brain as a real smile.

Whether real or fake, a smile can improve your mood and ease your stress. So when there no reason to smile, you can fake a smile like I just did.

10 Personal hygiene is important
Another important habit to develop. If you do not know, sickle cell reduces your immunity. That means you have a lower immunity and are more prone to infections and viruses.

Take care of your body, your environment and everything that concerns you. Even if you do not live sickle cell, this is a habit you should develop too.

11. Stop!… Stop smoking
Smoking is a very unhealthy habit and you need to develop the habit of not smoking. I would have added alcohol but some people have argued that throwing down a cup of wine once in a while doesn’t hurt.

Well, it truly doesn’t hurt but it causes dehydration and consequently can cause crisis. However for the purpose of passing valuable information, I would say stop the habit of smoking and drinking alcohol.

Develop a habit of zero smoking (except medically recommended) and zero alcohol.

12. Exercise
I’m an advocate for exercise for warriors now and always. Staying inactive does more harm to the body than good.

So, don’t just sit or lounge all day. Engage in physical activities, take a thousand steps, use the stairs rather than elevator, enroll in a gym.

HealthTen Tips To Help Student With Chronic Illness by abayomitheblog(op): 4:49pm On Jan 11, 2020
No one can deny the fact that university is a whole new adventure. It is like the stage between your teenage self and becoming an adult.

You have a glimpse of what it is like to be free, to have that freedom you have always craved since secondary school.

The freedom might feel like something good to you (wait until you get there) but one thing that never make sense is the high level of stress in Nigerian universities.

The stress is a major disadvantage for students like me living with a chronic illness especially sickle cell. One of the triggers of sickle cell crisis is stress.

During my first in university, I went through so much stress that during exams, I spent six days in the hospital.

After I was discharged, things got worse and my grade was not what I expected but I learnt a lot of lessons and I survived until this point.

If you are a student like me living with a chronic illness, I have some tips that will help you survive university. You would find these tips useful no matter the university you attend. And please share it after reading.

Tips to help student survive university

Here are some tips to survive university with chronic illness

1. Consider getting an accommodation

This is one thing you should do first before resuming school. It will save you the stress of jumping buses to attend classes. Although I do not recommend you getting school hostel. You might regret it. I do not recommend it because in a school hostel, everyone is in there for himself. No one will help you do things when you can’t. I suggest you get an accommodation close to school with a friend that knows you well and can help you.

2. Consider your course of study

Have you done your research on the course you want to study? Some courses are more stressful than others. Seek people who have been there, ask them about the course. Read about it online. A stressful course can get you bad grades if you are not careful. Having said that, I should also add that if the course is really what you want, then go for it and keep reading for more tips.

3. Plan your time effectively

What you do with your time is important. Make sure you make good use of it. Rest when you are supposed to, read and have fun too. You are the only one that can plan your time, so sit down and plan it.

4. Learn to forgive yourself

To be honest, there will be days when you won’t do what you planned. There will be days when you won’t be able to attend lectures. You need to accept that and forgive yourself so you can move on. Don’t beat yourself up for missing tests or exams, it can be frustrating but you are different so don’t beat yourself.

5. Make friends

Living with a chronic illness in the university can be isolating. You might be tempted to want to be alone or do it alone. Don’t fall for it.
You can’t survive alone, not in university, not in this world. Find friends that have compassion and can help you academically as well as morally. You would need loads of their support. I made the mistake of trying to do it alone. I did everything alone but it later affected my health and grade.
Don’t make the same mistake, make friends as soon as possible yet be wise in choosing your friends.

Nairaland General10 Sure Ways To Drive Massive Traffic To A New Blog by abayomitheblog(op): 2:11pm On Dec 07, 2019
1. Create valuable and evergreen contents
It all begins with your content. Content is king. Always create contents that are valuable to your audience but not just valuable also evergreen. You’ll find out that the evergreen contents get shared more because they never get old or outdated. They keep helping as much people as it gets.

An how to post tend to fit into the category of evergreen contents. Another thing to consider when creating content is value. The more value you provide in a blog post, the more it get shared among your audience. So, when next you’re creating a new content or editing old ones add enough values and work on the longevity.

2. Make sure your contents are optimized

Have you installed yoast SEO on your wordpress blog? Search engines can help drive traffic to your blog. You need to take it serious and invest in making every valuable content you create optimized. Yoast SEO is really easy to use and it gives you tips on how to optimize your posts. Strive to get the green light for your posts.

3. Share your post

You are not Neil Patel or Tim Ferris, those big guys in the industry. They have established their trust in their audience mind. So when they post, they do not need to share their post (yet they do). You and I are not as big yet we need to give our posts out. When you publish a post, take time to share on every platform that your audience hang out on. Take advantage of social media.

4. Write compelling headlines

Many bloggers don’t understand the power of writing powerful headline, maybe you are one of them. Here is a statistics from Copyblogger.
According to Copyblogger, only 8 out of 10 people will read your headline but only 2 out of 10 will read the rest of your post. In other words, a powerful, compelling headline will make a huge difference in that number. And a bad headline will bring destroy your the blog traffic you are trying to build.

5. Add social sharing buttons

It is important to have social media buttons on your blog. It could be at the end of your post or the side or anywhere on your blog as long as it is available. I use the social pug plugin for my social sharing floating button. There are other plugins for you on wordpress.

6. Share old contents

Don’t forget your older posts. Share them again, some might need updating, do that and share.

7. Ask your readers to share

I know you hate asking for help but if you don’t ask, you won’t get. Don’t assume your readers will share your post because it is valuable. Remind them at the end of your post to share and you can also add some other call to actions like following you on social media.

8. Write guest post

This is one of the fastest ways to grow your blog traffic. You should leverage on other blogs in your niche and write posts for them. Take time to look for big blogs in your niche and reach out to the author. Although some blogs do not accept guest post but many do accept guest post.

You can send them a mail telling them you wish to write for their blog.

9. Interview or do round up post

This is another fast way to not only get blog traffic but also quickly establish your brand and get it know early. You should interview experts and influencers in your niche. Let them know you admire them and would like to feature them on your blog.

After the interview, politely ask them for a share. You can also use round up post to drive massive traffic to your blog. An example of round post is this post by me. https://yomisblog.com/seven-sickle-cell-warriors-to-follow-on-instagram/

10. Be consistent

Consistency will secure your success to getting a higher blog traffic. You might have the best content but if you don’t keep giving your audience valuable content, they will not come back to your blog. Stay consistent in creating content, promoting them and following every other step in this post.

Nairaland GeneralThe Easiest Way Anyone Can Start A Blog by abayomitheblog(op): 2:52pm On Nov 30, 2019
So you’ve decided to start a blog? Good for you. But you don’t know where to start? I got you covered in this post.

Here’s a complete guide to show you how to start a blog in very easy steps.

1. Find a niche / Decide what to write about
Your blog niche is your blog purpose. What your blog revolves around. Some say, you have to find a niche and stick to it but I do not believe in that but I understand how important it is to have a niche. Instead, I advise you decide on what to write about on your blog. It doesn’t have to be a thing, it can be two or three as long as it interests you and you are ready to learn and become an expert in it.
However, if you have a niche in mind, good for you. You need to narrow down your niche. The narrower your niche, the better your chances of building a successful blog.

2. Get a domain name

If you’ve figured out what your blog will be about, it is time to get a domain name. The domain name will be the address of your website on the internet. Mine for instance is yomisblog.com. There are over 400 different domain extensions to choose from. An extension is the ending of your domain e.g .com, .com.ng, .co and all comes at different prices.

3. Host your domain

Once you’ve gotten yourself a domain name, you need to a web hosting. You would mostly get hosting from the company you bought your domain. So, you can get both your domain and hosting all at one place at cheap prices. I use a Nigeria web hosting company called Qserver. They offer domain and web hosting at very cheap price and 24/7 customer’s service to help you through technical issues.

4. Install a blogging platform

After getting your domain and hosting, your blogging journey is about to kick off but it won’t kick off without a blogging platform. A blogging platform is where you can design your website, publish your post and do whatever you wish on your blog. WordPress is by far the best platform for all bloggers. It is user friendly and offer lots of free tools that can help you build a successful blog.

5. Use a wordpress theme

WordPress offers variety of free and beautiful themes that you can start with. You don’t need to have any prior knowledge of web development. These themes will beautify your blog. To use a theme, install wordpress, go to appearance, then click themes and click add new. Explore the different themes until you find one that suits your style and you can customize your themes as well.

HealthA Sickle Cell Warrior, Dancer And Fitness Expert. (interview) by abayomitheblog(op): 4:52pm On Oct 27, 2019
I am 34, born with sickle cell SC version of the disease. I’m originally from New York City and I’ve been living in the west coast for 11 years and LA for 10 yrs. I danced professionally for over a decade as a background dancer for recording artistes. And then I transitioned into the health and fitness world.
I received my certification from the institute of integrated nutrition as a holistic health coach and I am a NASM (National academy of sports medicine certified personal trainer).

I’ve been doing personal training, health coaching and group fitness for the last eight years and I really made that transition because I wanted to learn about thriving with sickle cell and how to live my daily life while fighting this disease. I became my first client and I’ve learnt a ton along the way and I love sharing my passion for life and for fighting through obstacles with others and helping people alleviate their lives so that they can live their best life.

You are a certified fitness expert, fitness, I mean… Why fitness?

Candyce: So, just elaborating on what I said in my introduction, I became my first client and wanted to learn how I can eat healthy given this disease and travelling the world as a background dancer.

As a background dancer, you are not always eating the best food because you’re hoping on and off planes all the time.

I was eating a lot of fast foods because it was the only thing rightly available so it got to a point where I really wanted to learn how do I best fill my body and really live my best life while fighting this disease.

So I’ve really been on a journey to turn food into medicine and eating to live and I love to move so fitness was like a natural transition from my dance career.

HealthMy Journey So Far With Osteonecrosis (things I Have Learnt) by abayomitheblog(op): 3:14pm On Oct 25, 2019
I started my life like every other person, had plans for the future. I want this, I want to become that.

My journey with osteonecrosis started in 2016, when I began to feel sudden brief but sharp pain in my hip. It was difficult to stand or sit, even bending was painful as hell. I thought it would get better just like other minor sickle cell caused pain that hit me.

Days went, weeks, it was getting worse. Really worse. After weeks of excruciating pain and hospital visits, I was finally diagnosed of avascular necrosis also called osteonecrosis or AVN. That day, I was sad. Like every one when they first get their diagnosis. It was a bad thing, I thought (well, it is).

Few things I've learnt

I learnt to avoid procrastination
No one knows tomorrow, so why waste time with that dream. I had dream of becoming a model and actor. I know I can still be whatever but it would have been much better if I started then. It is way more difficult to start such careers as person living with avascular necrosis

Learn everything about your illness
I learnt that I was supposed to know everything about my illness. The history, the diagnosis, the complications, anything possible.

When you learn about your illness, you stand a greater chance to defeat it because you would work towards avoiding what needs to be avoided and embrace what needs to be.

Stay active
When avascular necrosis is caused by sickle cell, read other causes here. It is mostly caused by inactivity.

I learnt the importance of staying active the hard way but anyways I learnt.

When you engage in physical active and exercises, blood will flow properly and AVN will be prevented.

It only gets better
No matter how long it takes it only gets better.

HealthHow To Use Self Acceptance As A Tool For Healing by abayomitheblog(op): 10:29am On Oct 23, 2019
Self acceptance is the awareness of one's strength and weakness, the realistic appraisal of your talent, capability and weakness. I am a strong believer that self acceptance is the first step towards healing, thriving and living your best life despite your illness. For over fifteen years, I remained in denial. Pushed the truth of my disorder away and that caused me a lot mentally until I began to accept the fact that I live with sickle cell disorder.
Things got better. I started getting curious, to know about sickle cell and how to live and thrive with it.

I had to accept every fact and begin to research on how to become a better person. The first step towards self acceptance is taking time to note your flaws and strength.

Nairaland GeneralAvoid Saying These Words To Someone That Has A Chronic Illness by abayomitheblog(op): 6:35pm On Oct 20, 2019
Let me first give some examples of chronic illness, the likes of cancer, HIV, sickle cell disorder, arthritis, diabetes are some good examples.

Chronic illness is so misunderstood in the society. Many do not understand what it takes to be chronically ill, so they use words that are not only discriminating but also hurt the feelings and might cause harm to the chronically ill mental health.

You might not know the following words hurt but trust me it does hurt and you should stop using them.

1. “Why are you tired?”
Chronic fatigue is a major problem for people like this. They wake up tired even after ten hours sleep, it is their fault, it is deficiency in their body. For some it is anemia.
So don't ask them why they are tired.

2. “But you don’t look sick”
Some might not look sick, it is called invisible illness. And the fact you can’t see it does not mean it does not exist.

3. “Pray about it”
Yes, faith is important and prayer is good but I don’t think medicine and faith mix well.

You can’t just pray chronic pain away.

4. “You are too young to…”
The you are too young phrase is common.

Some say “You are to young to have (insert disease)” or “You are too young to use a walking aid”. People have to understand that age has nothing to do with chronic illness.

5. “Stop using the walking aid, you can do without it”
Whether it is a walking stick or a wheelchair, don't make them feel guilty especially when you see them use it and later see they are not using it.
Not everyone on a wheelchair has lost the use of their lower body and it is not everyone that uses a walking stick must have a bandage.

Health10 Things To Never Say To Someone Living With Chronic Illness by abayomitheblog(op): 9:55pm On Oct 17, 2019
Chronic illness is one that is really misunderstood in the society. Majority do not understand what it takes to be chronically ill and at the same time live in a country like Nigeria.

The discrimination is a daily struggle and sometimes, it can be something someone said or their actions but the truth is it mostly hurt our feelings. I have struggled with hurting words from friends and even family although I usually quickly find an excuse for them. I always feel like they don’t know it hurts. Because I know someone else is facing this same problem from people close to them and I wish to help because many of these people usually mean well for us.

I decided to share things they should stop saying to us.

1. “Why are you tired?” Stop it.

2. “But you don’t look sick” Yeah, you don’t look dumb.

3. “Pray about it”

4. “You are too young to…” Really?

5. “Stop using the walking aid, you can do without it”

HealthMental Health Issues: Social Anxiety And How To Deal With It. by abayomitheblog(op): 12:55pm On Oct 11, 2019
Yesterday was mental health day and I shared my struggle with social anxiety while living with a chronic illness.

I live with a chronic illness called sickle cell disorder and many complications come with having this disorder. It is very common among people living with this sickle cell disorder to be younger or smaller than their peers. In some cases, really skinny.

And in my own case, I grew up as the smallest in my class while secondary school, was bullied (story for another day).

All my life until this point, I have struggled with social anxiety. Many people have seen me as shy or too quiet or gentle when I know that I'm just finding it difficult to interact with people especially when it's a stranger or a strange environment.

In my second year in University when I thought I was getting out of social anxiety, at least I had few friends and talked to them whenever I wanted. Then things became worse when avascular necrosis affected my left hip, people saw me move from walking normal to using a walking stick and limping.
It was tough for me to go out, it was even tough to say a word in public to avoid drawing attention to my 'not straight' posture or to my leg which had no answer to their common question 'what happened to your leg?'

So, it was like my health had drawn people’s attention to my appearance. So, I was forced to become quiet and gentle in the public and social situations.

It was tough for me to talk even when I knew I love talking. Many people saw me as shy and introvert when I know that I am just finding it difficult interact with people in public and social situations.

I have some tips on dealing with social anxiety whether you live any illness or not. Link below
