Drama as PDP Chieftains Exchange Blows Over Delegates List

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQYLgmvBgxI

The accreditation of delegates at the Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary turned dramatic after some chieftains exchanged blows on Wednesday.

During the accreditation of delegates, there was a heated argument and fisticuff among some of the chieftains over the authentication of certain delegates from some local governments.

Some argued that certain individuals are not supposed to be on the list, implying that their names were smuggled in.

PoliticsI Am No Longer In Partisan Politics - Obasanjo To PDP Leaders by abc115(op): 5:14pm On Jan 22, 2022
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo told leaders of opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday that he won’t return to the party.

Obasanjo, 84, made this known when a PDP delegation led by the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, four former governors, and members of the party’s National Working Committee visited him at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In the team include the PDP Vice-Presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Peter Obi; former Governors, Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Donald Duke (Cross River).

The Deputy National Chairman of PDP (South), Taofeek Arapaja, and other party officials were part of the entourage.

Addressing the PDP delegation, Obasanjo said, “I’m no longer in partisan politics and there is nothing that can bring back. Anybody who wants my advice, I will always be there in the best interest of Nigeria.

“Whatever I do in my own life…because I became president on the platform of PDP, PDP will continue to be part of my life. Since the day I tore my PDP card, that was the day I ceased to be a member of PDP. That day I vowed not to be a member of any political party.

“I will continue to be a statesman.”

Obasanjo told Ayu that he has the problems of PDP and Nigeria on his shoulders, and prayed God to give him the wisdom to carry it.

Responding, Ayu told Obasanjo that “if you leave PDP, the blood of PDP will never leave you.”

He said the party would always require his fatherly advice towards governance in Nigeria.

Obasanjo was first Head of State from 1976 to 1979. After his prison ordeal, Obasanjo was later elected Nigeria’s President from 1999 to 2007 on the platform of the PDP.

He, however, publicly tore his PDP membership card in February 2015 after a feud with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Foreign AffairsMcconnell: Black People Vote At Similar Rates To ‘Americans’ by abc115(op): 1:21pm On Jan 22, 2022
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is drawing criticism for comments he made shortly before the GOP blocked a federal elections bill, when he said that “African American” voters cast ballots at similar rates to “Americans.”

The minority leader made the remark at a news conference in Washington on Wednesday, when he was asked about concerns that people of color have about voting rights.

“The concern is misplaced because if you look at the statistics, African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans,” McConnell said.

The comment implied that Black voters are somehow not American and underscored the concerns of voting rights advocates that Republicans in state legislatures across the country are explicitly seeking to disenfranchise Black voters. The timing was also notable, coming the same day that McConnell engineered a filibuster to block voting legislation that Democrats and civil rights leaders say is vital to protecting democracy.

In follow-up remarks Thursday, McConnell said: “I have consistently pointed to the record-high turnout for all voters in the 2020 election, including African Americans.”

Back home in Kentucky, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Charles Booker tweeted, “Being Black doesn’t make you less of an American, no matter what this craven man thinks.” Booker, who is Black, unsuccessfully ran for McConnell’s seat in 2020 and is challenging GOP Sen. Rand Paul this year.

“Hey @LeaderMcConnell,” tweeted Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, who is Black, “...for your information, I’m also an American!”

McConnell’s supporters called it an unfair attack, saying he simply left out a word and meant to say that Black people vote at similar rates to “all” Americans. Black voters do cast ballots at about the same rate as all voters, falling in between Latinos, who are less likely to go to the polls than African Americans, and whites, who are more likely to go to the polls.

In 2016 and 2020, white voters turned out at higher rates than Black voters, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The census shows that 71% of eligible white voters cast a ballot in 2020, compared with 63% of eligible African Americans. In 2016, 65% of white voters cast a ballot, versus 60% of Black voters.

Scott Jennings, a former adviser to President George W. Bush who has close ties to McConnell, said attacks on the senator’s remarks were “ridiculous.”

“McConnell was clearly stating that African American voting rates are similar to the entire electorate as a whole, to point out how easy and fair our system of voting is for everyone,” he said.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who is Black, also came to the senator’s defense, saying the “faux outrage” over McConnell’s remarks was “absurd.” Cameron, a Republican, is McConnell’s former legal counsel. Cameron also said that McConnell was “making a point that Black voting rates are similar to the entire electorate as a whole.”

Two Democratic senators joined all 50 Republicans in refusing to change Senate rules to overcome the GOP filibuster on Wednesday. Democrats could not persuade holdout Sens. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia to change Senate procedures on that bill and allow a simple majority to advance it.

Sadiqa Reynolds, president and CEO of the Louisville Urban League in Kentucky, said McConnell’s comments were particularly frustrating to hear after the voting legislation failed in the Senate.

Reynolds, who is Black, said the lack of support for the legislation from McConnell and other lawmakers showed African Americans that they are “still not seen as Americans worthy of having our voice heard at the ballot box.”

“Our patriotism, our citizens status, should never be questioned,” Reynolds said. ”... And we are owed an apology, not just for Freudian slips, but for failures to honor the role that we have played in building this great country.”

PoliticsAlberta Minister Who Attacked Malami Asked To Step Aside Over Traffic Violation by abc115(op): 5:49pm On Jan 18, 2022
Nigerian-born Minister of Justice and Solicitor-General of the Government of Alberta, Canada, Kelechi Madu, has been asked to step aside over traffic-related offences.

The Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, announced this in a series of posts on his verified Twitter account on Tuesday.

According to Kenney, it was important for Madu to step aside pending the outcome of an independent investigation into a March 10, 2021 incident.

Madu, who assumed the role in August 2020, got fined for using his phone while driving in March 2021.

He was accused of calling the province’s police chief after being slammed a $300 fine he received for violating one of Canada’s traffic and safety regulations.

Announcing the decision for Madu to step aside, Kenney wrote, “I have spoken with Minister Madu about the March 10 incident reported in the media today.

“I conveyed to him my profound disappointment in his decision to contact the Edmonton Police Chief after receiving a ticket for a traffic violation.

Minister Madu told me that he did not ask to have the ticket rescinded, nor was it his intention to interfere in the case, and that he promptly paid the ticket.

“I understand that Chief McFee has confirmed that at no time did the Minister seek to have the ticket rescinded.

“Nevertheless, it’s essential the independent administration of justice is maintained.

PoliticsOni, Olusola, Olujimi, Others Reject Outcome Of Ekiti PDP Congress by abc115(op): 12:43pm On Jan 16, 2022
FIVE Peoples Democratic Party aspirants in the 2022 Ekiti State governorship election have rejected Saturday’s ward congress to elect three ad hoc delegates in each of the 177 wards in the state, saying the process was hijacked.

The aggrieved aspirants are a former governor of the state, Chief Segun Oni; a former deputy governor in the state, Prof Kolapo Olusola; Senator Biodun Olujimi; former PDP National Treasurer, Wale Aribisala; and a former Senatorial aspirant; Lateef Ajijola.

They accused the congress committee appointed by the party’s National Working Committee, chaired by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, of not following due process.

According to them, the results of the exercise which ought to hold across the different wards were fabricated and recorded at a hotel in the Fajuyi area of the state.

There was tension at Koltotel hotel located at GRA in Ado Ekiti, where the committee members from Abuja resided as party members besieged the hotel, alleging that the congress was teleguided by a former governor of the state.

There was heavy deployment of policemen, men of the Department of State Services and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in the area to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

Oni, who expressed regrets that the election materials sent to the 177 wards were allegedly hijacked, described the situation as worrisome, saying, “What you have seen today is laughable. This is the standard we still are as a country. It is very unfortunate.

There is nothing we can do other than to complain formally. We have complained to the acting chairman of the ward congress panel. I believe we cannot have a genuine democracy this way. If anybody is a ‘muscle man’, he should apply that to winning people for the party.

“We would believe the party will take a look at what has happened. At least, we all spoke on our honour and if they want us to say more they can contact us. Each of us is a known face to even the people in Abuja. This is very unfortunate, but we hope the party will find a way out of it.”

Speaking on the ongoing efforts by the national headquarters of the party to reconcile members in Ekiti PDP, the former governor said, “Before, we were getting it right; we were talking across all divides and we believed we would end up being together. But what happened today has shown that there is a big problem

CrimeNDLEA Questions Obi Cubana Over Alleged Drug Links by abc115(op): 3:05am On Jan 14, 2022
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday grilled socialite, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, for his alleged link to the illegal narcotic business, The PUNCH has learnt.

The PUNCH reports that Iyiegbu, who is the Chairman, Cubana group of companies, was grilled for about five hours at the Abuja headquarters of the NDLEA before he was granted bail and asked to return at a future date.

Impeccable sources told our correspondent that suspicious payments were made into Cubana’s account by three convicted drug dealers from Malaysia, Nigeria and India.

Operatives of the NDLEA and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have now widened the probe into Cubana and his business network based on the premise that he may be involved in the drug business.

“Obi Cubana arrived at the NDLEA office around 9am and responded to questions for some hours before he was granted bail at 2pm. There are suspicions that he may be a drug kingpin. Some convicted drug dealers paid funds into his account.

“We have been able to establish three of such payments. One of the persons that paid money into his account was convicted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; another one that was convicted in New Delhi, India; also paid money into his account while a third person that was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and convicted in 2017, also paid money into Cubana’s account,” said a source.

PoliticsPDP To Rent Out 8 Floors In Abandoned National Secretariat For Revenue by abc115(op): 2:37am On Jan 12, 2022
Cash-strapped PDP to rent out national secretariat for revenue: National chairman

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Iyorchia Ayu, on Tuesday, disclosed that eight floors from the party’s national secretariat in Abuja will be commercialised to generate revenues.

“The idea that I understand is that PDP will occupy three floors, and the rest will be commercialised to generate revenue for the party, ” Mr Ayu told journalists while he led members of PDP National Working Committee on a facility tour of the uncompleted 11 storey building in Abuja.

“The briefing I have is that work has actually got to finishing stages, and most of the critical components were on the ground, they have been moved to another location for safekeeping.

“Therefore, after so many years, we have lost a lot of revenue,” he said, listing components of the building as 11 floors; two underground floors, and nine floors off the ground.

“As a party at Wadata House, we are challenged by lack of adequate office space. So the party will now discuss with all stakeholders of the party and will explore the necessary avenue for completing this edifice,” he said.

Mr Ayu added: “We believe that apart from the critical stakeholders of the party, we will look for other ways including advice from experts to look into commercial considerations.

“It is a building that must be completed, it must never be allowed to remain wasted as it is. So the next way forward is to explore all possible avenues to complete this building.”

The construction of the secretariat was conceived in 2008 by a former National Chairman, Ahmadu Ali to address inadequate office space at the present secretariat, Wadata Plaza, in Wuse Zone 5.

The contract awarded to BNL Construction and Engineering Company was reviewed upward from N11.5 billion to N16 billion.

Though the project was billed for completion in 126 weeks, the company withdrew from the site in 2014 due to the inability of the party to raise money for the work.

Arewa leader in the South , Alhaji Musa Saidu has said northern leaders want the new political alliance between the north and south west that secured victory for President Muhammadu Buhari to continue.

Saidu also said they will like it if President Muhammadu Buhari supports the presidential bid of Chief Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election as a reward for Tinubu’s effort in bringing about the political alliance between the north and South west.

Saidu recalled that the 2015 presidential election marked a watershed in the nation’s political history as it was the first time the north and south west would share a common political vision that brought Buhari as President.

e said after the election,.prominent Arewa leaders gathered in Kaduna where those who spoke said the new political alliance should be sustained for national peace.

” It is the wish of northern elders that the new found political relationship be built on. At a meeting of Arewa leaders some years ago after Buhari’s victory in his first term , speakers advised that the relationship should continue between the north and the South West. “

” Supporting Tinubu is the time to reciprocate his political effort at bringing about this North and South West political alliance that gave victory to President Buhari. “

” It is normal for some to disagree for reasons best known to them but the general view is that the north should sustain the political relationship with the South West .The north are not known to deceive people, betray people. “
