Foreign AffairsRe: Your Views On Israel And Palestine by Abeem(m): 6:33am On Jul 16, 2006
TayoD:
mukina2,

Are you asking the Isrealis to vacate that land for the Palestines? Not only is this impossible, it is certainly not justified. From the last I know, Palestinians are a people that became a nation recently after being sent packing from Lebanon. Isreal has been living in that land much longer than that. David was king over Jerusalem and the surrounding lands. Now tell me if the Palestinians can trace their roots that far.
@TayoD
Reading your posting is a stark reminder of how it is possible for a hitherto fertile mind to be corrupted by religious bigotry.  I am surprised that you do not know that the root (or shall I say genesis, to go bibilical) of the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis is land which predates the Moses era.  I can see that you have based your reasonings on the chronology of events in your bible but in this wise, the bible is not sufficient a resource to make an informed and well-balanced argument.  Read the following:

A  The Israelite Kingdom

Hebrew tribes probably immigrated to the area centuries before Moses led his people out of serfdom in Egypt (1270? bc), and Joshua conquered parts of Palestine (1230? bc). The conquerors settled in the hill country, but they were unable to conquer all of Palestine.

The Israelites, a confederation of Hebrew tribes, finally defeated the Canaanites about 1125 bc but found the struggle with the Philistines more difficult. The Philistines had established an independent state on the southern coast of Palestine and controlled a number of towns to the north and east. Superior in military organization and using iron weapons, they severely defeated the Israelites about 1050 bc. The Philistine threat forced the Israelites to unite and establish a monarchy. David, Israel’s great king, finally defeated the Philistines shortly after 1000 bc, and they eventually assimilated with the Canaanites.

The unity of Israel and the feebleness of adjacent empires enabled David to establish a large independent state, with its capital at Jerusalem. Under David’s son and successor, Solomon, Israel enjoyed peace and prosperity, but at his death in 922 bc the kingdom was divided into Israel in the north and Judah in the south. When nearby empires resumed their expansion, the divided Israelites could no longer maintain their independence. Israel fell to Assyria in 722 and 721 bc, and Judah was conquered in 586 bc by Babylonia, which destroyed Jerusalem and exiled most of the Jews living there.

Christianity EtcRe: Pastor Adeboye Says Satan Planned 49 Plane Crashes by Abeem(m): 9:51pm On Jul 15, 2006
If I may ask my Christian brethrens who are defending the pastor, please educate me if it was the disposition of Jesus Christ (a.s) to always give a yearly prediction of future events while he was alive preaching the gospel? Unless they can convince me that the pastor and his ilks got their inspiration from him whom they follow in matter of faith, then what they are doing has no basis in religion. It amounts to attention seeking and pandering to the mundane. It is playing God - who alone has absolute and perfect knowlege of all things, (both seen and unseen, known and unknown).

If only predictors of future events will learn a lesson or two from the mistakes and misfortunes of others (a la Primate Olabayo) and stop arrogating to themselves what is the exclusive preserve of the Almighty God. If, If , and If but will people learn?
Christianity EtcRe: Pastor Adeboye Says Satan Planned 49 Plane Crashes by Abeem(m): 5:31pm On Jul 14, 2006
This thread reminds me of the good old Primate Olabayo of the Church of Yaweh fame.  He was into predictions long before the likes of Pastor Adeboye became reknown in the art.  His predictions were legendary.  He not only prophesised about local events, but also dabble into International events as well, all with pin-point accuracies.
A lot of Nigerians believed in him so much so that NTA Network News usually attends his yearly retreat on Mt. Taborah? in Kwara State of which the anti-climax was the launching of his book of prophesies. I am talking about the good old days before "religious imperialism" (apologies) took the Nigerian ideological landscape by storm.  But he goofed and ever since his credibility has suffered.
During the run down to the 1992 presidential election in the US, he was basking in the glory of another eventful Mt. Taborah retreat and was asked by the NTA Network reporter, Frank Olise,  to predict who will win the elections.  He replied: "President Bush",  but the rest is now history as the then president Bush was soundly defeated by Bill Clinton in the elections.

Christianity EtcThe Qur'an: Its Source Is Divine by Abeem(op): 11:30pm On Jul 09, 2006
“SOURCES” of the QUR’AN

Many people have the mistaken belief by reasons of bias, prejudice or stereotype that the Qur’an was not revealed to the Prophet but was instead plagiarized or communicated to him by some Jinns or Christians. However, as elucidated to in the following passages from the Qur’an, the author of the holy book Himself provided answers to the contrary.

Read on:
“It is those who believe not in the signs of Allah that forge falsehood: it is they who lie” (Q16:105)Everything has a source!
Nothing happens by accident, everything has a cause, even the Qur’an. To some people who believe that the contest for sovereignty is between God and the Devil, the Qur’an must be the handiwork of small Satan - the Jinns. They alleged that the Prophet (PBUH) learnt it from Jinns, but Allah is quick to dismiss this: Certainly, it is not from Jinns:

“…and they say: ‘surely he is possessed (by Jinns)’! But it (the Qur’an) is nothing less than a message to all the worlds.” (Q68:51-52).

They are not easily satisfied, so they expanded the scope of their “source” to include Satan himself. But Allah insists that before reciting the Qur’an, curse Satan:

“When you do read the Qur’an, seek Allah’s protection from Shaytan, the rejected one.” (Q16:98).
Thus one wonders why Satan would want his readers to seek refuge from and curse himself before reading his book. - a most curious way to author a book one would say. You can see it is not from Shaytan.

Well if there are no other supernatural sources to point to, then it must be a man, someone from a different civilization who must come from the Christian or Jewish background! Alas, Allah refutes this claim as well, for He said:

“And we know indeed that they say, it is a man that teaches him. The tongue of him they wickedly point to is notably foreign, while this is Arabic, pure and clear.” (Q16:104).
See also (Q25:4-6):
“Those who deny the Truth say: “This Qur’an is but a forgery which he (Muhammad) has devised and some other people have helped him. Unjust is what they do and falsehood is what they utter! And they say: These are stories of the ancient which he has copied down from what is read to him day and night. Tell them: “This Qur’an is revealed by Him Who knows the secrets of the heavens and earth; surely, He is Ever-Forgiving, Merciful."
Not Jinns! Not Satan! Not Man! Who else? Those who disbelieve and hate Islam will forever continue to forge lies concerning the “sources” of the Qur’an. Allah Who knows the beginning and the end of all things answers all their falsehood. He made the Qur’an the proof and defender of itself. No doubt the Qur’an, that amazing scripture comes from Allah, straight, direct and undiluted!

“O mankind! There has come to you an admonition (the Qur’an) from your Lord and (it is) a healing for the (disease) in your hearts - and for those who believe, Guidance and a Mercy.” (Q10:57).
Culled from Deen Digest July/August 1997.

This is an attempt to educate and inform readers on this seemingly controversial topic. Readers’ reactions are welcome but we should not take this as an opportunity to disparage or ridicule Islam, the Almighty Allah nor the exalted Prophet of Islam (PBOH).

@4get_me
I have made myself clear enough that Islam as a religion do not emphasize or talk about miracles as the Christians are wont to do.  At the risk of repeating myself, I make bold to reiterate that Islam and its adherents believe in the absolute power and dominion of the Almighty Allah (who is God, Olodumare, Olorun, Oluwa, Chineke, Osanobua? or whatever name you call the higher being in your mother tongue). If in His infite mercies and wisdom (which transcends human knowledge and understanding) He decrees something to happen, He only says: "Be, and it will Be."

Thank you for your understanding.
Christianity EtcRe: The Qur'an, So Amazing by Abeem(op): 7:21pm On Jul 04, 2006
Ajia23,
Thank you. I know but the essence of my posting is not to talk about miracles since it is not the preoccupation of Muslims to dwell on that subject-matter. We believe that our Lord, the Almighty Allah has power and dominion over all elements of its creation and He is not incapable of doing anything. Whenever He wills or desires to do anything, He simply says: Be and it will be.

However, I will appreciate if you can forward details about how to get the book you mentioned in your post to me by return.

The Nobel Noble Verse (Culled from Deen Digest, Feb/Mar 1997).

This literature is meant for the reading pleasure of Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Readers reactions are most welcome but our reactions should be limited to seeking clarifications and/or further education and not to disparage Islam.
Please enjoy.  More to follow.

The Qur’an (every statement, word and letter of it) is divine.  No Muslim can be a Muslim without that conviction.  Therefore, after reading and grasping its content we always affirm: "The words of Allah are true” (Sadaqa Allahu li azeem).  Even in situations where we do not comprehend the meaning and message of any verse ( due to our limited knowledge of course) we still make that affirmation and even add: “ Allah knows best” (Allahu a’lam) thereby exposing our human weakness and limitations.
That was exactly the attitude of early Muslims to several statements in the Qur’an some of which are validated by scientific research today.  A particular verse in the Qur’an best fits this situation. This verse clearly shows that the author of the Qur’an was not only present at the beginning of the universe and life, but in fact He is the Originator and Creator of them.  He states:
“Do not the Unbelivers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before We clove them asunder?  We made from water every living thing.  Will they not then believe?” (Q21:30)
The early Muslims believed but could not comprehend and prove this statement.  They simply said: “Allah knows best”, but they were spurred to search.  The search accelerated scientific studies.
A couple of decades ago, however, this Quranic verse got a scientific confirmation.  The Big-Bang theory, the universally accepted theory of the origin of the universe, posited that at a point in time (billions/millions years back), all of the heavens, earth and celestial bodies were one piece called “the monoblock”.  This later splintered and has since then continues to expand – with each parted object moving in its own orbit (Q51:47). This scientific discovery (the Big- Bang theory) was made by three men who were given the Nobel Prize award in Physics in 1973.
About two hundred years ago, Dutchman Leewenhoek and others invented the microscope.  Since then it has become more sophisticated.  With its aid, we now know that all living things are made up of minute cells each of which is virtually (over 80%) composed of water.  Indeed, Allah has “made from water every living thing” (Q21:30).
Surprising? No! Only truly amazing is the Qur’an.  Whether or not we understand the verses of the Qur’an, the truth is they originated from a divine source, our Creator.  Muslims will not wait for any scientific validation to affirm their faith and conviction in all the verses of the Qur’an.  Only unbelievers would quibble, hesitate or dismiss them as untruth.
PoliticsRe: Should Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Now Foreign Minister) Resign? by Abeem(m): 1:35am On Jul 03, 2006
Many of the contributors to this thread have forgotten that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the erstwhile foreign affairs Minister, Olu Adeniji are the only two Ministers in the OBJ cabinet that are on a whopping $250,000 and $120,000 annual salaries respectively.  Having already served 3 years as ministers, Mrs Iweala have raked in $750,000 in salaries and with one more year to go, she is sure of netting an additional $250,000 to cap their salaries at $1,000,000.  At the parallel market rate of #140.00 to $1.00, this translates to #105,000,000.00 for 4 years.
My point is with the assurance of getting an additional $250,000.00 or #35,000,000.00, it does not make economic sense for her to reject the redeployment to the foreign affairs ministry.  Besides, she stands to make more money in
terms of estacode allowances as she will more often than not pay visits to Nigerian embassies accross the world.
Having said that, I think the Minister failed to live up to the expectation of Nigerians in terms of integrity and conduct required of her person in her former office.  To say that Nigerians hold her in high esteem is an understatement but from indications that seems to be a misplaced judgement.  I am astonished to learnt that the Minister betrayed the confidence reposed in her by colluding with the president (who has confessed) to withdraw $2.1 billion from the Excess Crude Oil account without approval from the National Assembly as required by the constitution. Regrettably, neither the president nor the former finance minister (now foreign affairs minister) informed the legislators, until one sharp-eyed lawmaker started asking questions.
In the same token there was another reported $2.475 billion withdrawn for a Power Sector Development Scheme from the Consolidated Revenue Fund Account.  The constitution vests the authority for the withdrawal in the National Assembly (NASS) but in these two cases (and maybe numerous others to be uncovered) the President and Mrs Okonjo-Iweala acted without recourse to the NASS.   Hmmm, He who plays the piper dictates the tune.

mrmayor,
Norfolk Island located in the Australian peninsula, is a country whose flag is decked with the green-white-green colours.  With the exception of the tree in the middle, this flag is similar in all respects to the Nigerian flag.  Did I conjure or perform some MS Photo editing on the Nigerian flag? Nope.  I obtained this information from the same source you provided in your reply. For the avoidance of doubt, click on this link: http://www.flags.net/ASTL01.htm#ASTL0109
I know you reside in Europe and you are very much aware that Australia and the surrounding Islands in the peninsula (are) were all British territories or is the Norfolk Island an OIC member nation too?
The truth is that:
toshmann:
we cannot just say that the green colors are for islam. there is no statement from the website that the religion adopted green as a color. even if they did, there is no law that states that only islam should have green as a color. so our green is for agriculture, and our white for peace(do we really have peace in that country? and what of agriculture?) anyway the color aint for religion

BTW there are islamic countires which don't have the green color in their flag.
Please let desist from this culture of misinformation and base our arguments on truth not falsehood and conjecture.
Thank you.

Because of some people's hate for Islam, they will hasten to join the bandwagon in the attack of the religion. If you are not aware, please be informed that the distinguishing symbol of Islam is the moon crescent.  Go and check the flags of Islamic nations and you will notice that they have the crescent on their flags.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Flag: Green, White, Green = Islamic Nation by Abeem(m): 4:24pm On Jun 25, 2006
Not true. The Green - White - Green symbol of the Nigerian flag has nothing to do with religion. It symbolizes Agriculture (Green) and Peace (White). And what if it is a symbol of Islam, what has that got to do with a country adopting the same symbol? You sounded as if the color symbols is the exclusive preserve of one organization and others cannot use it because of its affliation with that organized religion.
Advice This type of reasoning only comes from a diseased and jaundiced mind, not one that is educated. You strike me as someone who just write whatever comes to his mind without cross-checking the facts and accuracy or doing his homework before going to press. And like I have advised you before, always endeavour to spice your write-up with credibility, because that is the only way your readers will take you serious. As a young lad, your mind should be devoted to productive ventures and not acts capable of inciting one set of people against the other.
Observation It would appear your pastime is devoted to fanning the embers of hatred. If it is not speaking ill of one religion, it will be rooting for the break-up of the country. The Green-White-Green flag of the country has been flown since October 1st, 1960, after the Union Jack, the British flag was lowered on the attainment of independence on Oct. 1st, 1960 and I have not heard nor read such insinuation/charges that you have made.

One factor that should not be overlooked is the level of deregulation of the telecommunications industry. Ghana had long deregulated its telecommunications industry before the ongoing attempt by the BPE in Nigeria and that explains why you can call Ghana for less and Naija for more. Another factor that should not be discountenanced is the level of development of that industry. Nigeria telecommunication industry/system is still evolving hence it costs more to place calls to the country.

Drusilla,
Your points are incontrovertible but the fact still remains that banking laws in Nigeria (and I am sure all nations for statistical reporting and other uses) require the banks to report thefts and frauds (Remember, or if you are not aware, that most of our laws derive from or are tailored after those of the developed world especially Britain and US). Now whether they ignore this law completely or they purposely reduce the amount and/or frequency of reporting the pilferage of their boot via the computer is another point which I am not privy to talk about. Besides the online banking system is still evolving in Nigeria, not comparable to the American and the European systems. The European banks and their American counterparts for the public relations reason you identified definitely have the incentives not to report the frauds in full, but I am sure when the thefts are discovered by the external bank examiners, they will be penalized accordingly. Also, they have the resources and they wouldn't mind paying the penalty, because the opportunity cost of acting otherwise can be very disastrous.

June 12, 1993, remains a watershed in the election history of the country. It was the date, Nigerians from all walks of life spoke in unison, albeit with their vote, in electing Alhaji M.K.O. Abiola and Alhaji Babagana Kingibe as president and vice president of the country. This day should have been set aside for remembrance as democracy day and not May 29 as Obasanjo's administration has decreed contrary to the voice of reason of pro-democracy and human rights organizations.
If Nigeria were to be a country that respect its citizens, it would've been possible for the people to force the government to change its stand by declaring June 12 as democracy day instead of May 29. In a civilized country, this is easily achievable by submitting a petition duly signed to the president and he is duty bound to honor it.

PoliticsRe: Only A Military Man Should Be President, Says General by Abeem(m): 6:08pm On Jun 04, 2006
The US has fought so many wars than any other country in modern history and whenever they are fighting wars, its people tend to be united in fighting the common enemy.  Because of this unity that envelopes the country during war time, the commander of the war is usually looked upon as a rallying figure and one that is well loved by the people (This school of thought is subject to debate with the Vietnam and Iraq wars). Because of their war accomplishments, the people see the war commanders as strategists, and tested leaders of men that could be trusted with power and leadership of the country.  At election time, especially during presidential elections, the country is highly polarized and a party that could present a candidate that command the trust and respect of the people usually win elections.  That is why the parties usually shop for war veterans as their arrow head during presidential election year. Examples of former US presidents with experience in battlefront before ascendancy to the presidency - George Washington, Andrew Jackson, William Harrison, Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower etc.
This is not the case with Nigeria.  In the US, the army is subordinate to civil authority. By contrast, the Nigerian Army has ruled for the better part of post-independence Nigeria, sacking the elected respresentative of the people and looting the resources of the nation on an unprecedented scale.  Because of the large-scale looting of resources, the retired army men have a vast amount of money to deploy during elections to swing the result of ballot boxes in their favor. On a well conducted election that is free and fair, nobody will vote the military into office because with the benefit of hindsight, we know the stuff they are made of and what they are capable of doing.
Therefore to say that only a military man should be president is the height of hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty.  It is a fraudulent manipulation and application of history of a well established democracy to deceive the citizens of another country.
Foreign AffairsRe: Where Is Zimbabwe Going Economically? by Abeem(m): 5:00pm On Jun 04, 2006
Afeni:
Seun, Zimbabwe's problem is a lot more complicated than you are making it appear. The white farmers you are talking about didn't really consider themselves Zimbabwean. They felt they were better than the average Zimbabwean and due to the stolen land that they had, they were also a lot richer. So, while it sucks that they lost all their land (The government should only have taken 40 percent or so) these people are far from angels.

Also note that the UK, United States, and many other countries are actively making it difficult for Zimbabwe to sell their products because they want to set an example of them for confiscating land from the white Zimbabweans.

To some how imply that the reason that Zimbabwe's economy tanked is as a direct result of giving the land to the natives is a bit misleading.
The issue of expropriating the white-owned lands was brought up for a constitutional review in February 2000,but was flatly rejected by majority of Zimbabweans.  Shortly afterwards the white lands were forcefully seized by militia men and Mugabe's pre-independence war veterans.  Nobody was left in doubt that this act was carried out with the support and active connivance of the government of Zimbabwe. The government had since come out with its land reform policies under which more than 5000 farms belonging to the white farmers had been siezed in what it says was meant "to correct the the colonial-era of imbalance in land ownership".
The exercise which is still ongoing is meant to appease the supporters of Mugabe.  I recalled in August 2003 that I discussed this issue with my US History professor, himself a Zimbabwean, and he was in support of the action. There was no doubt that the action though politically motivated, was ill-conceived and was meant to galvanize support for an increasingly unpopular government.
A responsive government will have taken time to consider the implication of its actions before rushing to implement it.  By displacing the farmers and distrupting the production of Agricultural products, the entire industry was turned upside down.  By not considering the ramification of its actions and by letting political considerations overshadow the economic well being of the country, Mugabe as the head of the government of Zimbabwe remains accountable.
There is nothing misleading in blaming the land reform policies of the government as the root cause or if you might say, the genesis of the economic problem for the country.  For more information read:

Unless you want to be economical with the truth, you cannot say unequivocally that the present admin is not using the EFCC to pursue vendatta against its enemies. To achieve real progress in the fight for the eradication of corruption, government must give the EFCC true autonomy and let the commission pursue its duties without let or hinderance. Only then can we say the EFCC is living to its billing.

Afeni:
It is heading to complete ruin. Robert Mugabe should step down. Those who are undermining his economy won't stop until the lands of the expelled whites are returned and he is out of power.

With 1000 percent inflation, I am suprised the people are still allowing him to remain in power.
Who is undermining who? Whatever economic ruin that befall this country should be blamed on nobody except Mugabe.  The runaway inflation in Zimbabwe has hit an unprecedented level comparable in recent history to the economic malaise that plaqued Argentina in the late 70's and 80's. The country had just issued a Z$100,000.00 bill which according to analysts on NPR (Radio) in Michigan USA , can only buy one loaf of bread, 4 pieces of egg and a pint of milk.  In comparison Z$ 25,000 was sufficient to buy a house in 1980 when the country became indepedent.
The country is headed for total ruin unless Mugabe steps down and cause a reversal of his unpopular decision to forcefully acquire farmlands from the rich farmers for reallocation to the peasants. The rich farmers were previously the backbone or mainstay of the economy of his country and the sooner this is done the better for the country.  Zimbabawe that used to be a net exporter of foods is now a net importer causing its balance of payment (BOP) to be in deficit because the foreign earnings from the sale of agricultural products had ceased.
